  1. Hello Everyone looking for a suggestion here.I am planning on to assemble a Gamng/esxi machine. CPU: AMD 3900x/3950x MOBO:X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-64GVK GPU: 2070/2080 Super I already have a ssd and hdd from old machine to use. Case:Fractal Design Node 202 Case+750W PSU I want this to be as minimal as it can be in terms of space. Looking for suggestions here or your feedback to how I should proceed. Thanks in advance
  2. Hello, should I buy older whole server with two Intel Xeon E5-2630 v4, 128GB DDR4 RAM or new only CPU, RAM, MB AMD RYZEN 9 3900X with 64 GB DDR4 RAM. PSU and case I already have. Priced roughly the same. It will run vmware ESXi with virtualized minecraft servers, web and DB server, teamspeak server and OMV NAS. Thank you
  3. I'm trying to run OpenWRT on ESXi however I'd like to have all my ethernet ports as LAN/WAN, is there a way so that i can setup the web management so that i can access the management website from any computer connected to openwrt?
  4. Hi Guys, I am trying to move out of ESXi (licensing and support is killing me) and into Proxmox but I dont have another host to install Proxmox and migrate the VMs. I use an IBM x3550 server with a LSI RAID controller for storage. 1) Is there anyway where I can remove ESXi and install Proxmox and connect it to storage? 2) I use Veritas Backup Exec for backups. Can I backup the ESXi VMs and restore onto Proxmox? 3) Can I do a Proxmox VM on ESXi and migrate all the VMs and then dump Proxmox onto the bare metal? Please advise. Best regards, Gdcrocx
  5. Okay this is a weird one. I am reconfiguring my ESXi 6.7.0 Update 2 (Build 13006603) host to run the OS on a small flash drive instead of a SATA hard drive so I can keep it separate from my datastore. All of my VMs are migrated and stored on a new hard drive. I then plug in a 64GB USB 3.0 drive and am able to install ESXi on it. The problem is now that when I reboot the system, ESXi seems to reset to factory settings. All of my settings go away including my VMWare license key, my created users, my VM registrations, and my management network settings. It reverts from Static to DHCP and resets the hostname and DNS configuration. This problem never occurred when ESXi was installed on a SATA drive (which was running 6.7 [not Update 2]) but has consistently reverted all of these settings on reboot since migrating to the flash drive. Anyone else ever experience this? Am I better off using a smaller SATA drive to store ESXi on if it avoids this problem or is this an indication of something else?
  6. Hi all, For my job, I work between both Windows and macOS. For the past few months, I've been using VMWare workstation to run the macOS virtually but it's beginning to struggle. I got my hardware upgraded to help but was remember the LInus video with 2 gamers 1 CPU. I would like to try something like this, but after some research there seems to be certain constraints. Here is my hardware: - HP Z600 Workstation - Dual Xeon Quad Cores - 48GB DDR3 - 2 x Samsung 840 Pro 250GB SSDs - 2 x Seagate 1TB HDDs - NVIDIA Quadro FX580 - AMD FirePro V9500 - PCI network card - 3 x Monitors - 2 sets of keyboards/mice I'd like to be able to have macOS on 1 monitor and Windows on 1 or 2, each with a CPU, 24GB RAM, GPU, keyboard/mouse, SSD, HDD so both systems shouldn't be struggling (in theory). unRAID would be ideal but my work will not pay for this, so are there any other alternatives? Originally I was going to use ESXi but I would need a client and will render the GPUs useless. I'm not familiar with KVM and it's ability to support macOS. If this cannot be done, fair enough I will go back to the way I was doing it before but on the new hardware. Thanks
  7. Hey all, would just like some input regarding using my spare 6700k in a system that's running ESXi with pfsense/freenas and at least a windows and a few linux OS as VMs. I am getting a quad intel gigabit NIC, so ports won't be a problem. Can anyone advise potential problems from having that config? ESXi will be run from a USB drive, with the VMs on an SSD and the NAS storage on 2-4 3.5 HDDs... I will be (hopefully) importing the volumes from my current freenas setup. I will maybe underclock and undervolt the CPU to save some power, but considering this will be potentially taking the place of at least 2 machines, I think it's all good? I will only be using a cryorig c7 as the cooler for now and see how it gets on with noise/performance. This will be a fairly big project for me as I haven't dabled in pfsense before, and I also want to configure it as a VPN server to access the NAS VM from outside the LAN. no time constraints as I already have a NAS + backup NAS and PC etc to use while this is being built and configured. One thing I have consdiered is RAM being too low, will only be using 8GB for now as money is a bit tight right now, big purchases lately. I have considered selling the i7 and buying a g4560, but thought I might be better off keeping the i7 for the 8 threads it has, what do you think?
  8. Ok so I'll first explain the situation. I just built my first server, I bought a case with 24 bays for drives so I can use it as a media server / file storage etc and also for backups, even for family. Now the big question is, do I use FreeNAS, ESXi or Ubuntu server? I like freenas for the simplicity but dislike for the restrictiveness of the plugins (I know this will be gone with freenas 10 but it's not here yet and I need a solution now) and the reportedly bad reliability of the plugins. I like ESXi for the easy way to spin up some vm's and use freenas under it for the file storage and maybe an Ubuntu server too for the media serving etc.... The problem with ESXi is that I have a 16 core 32 threads system and the free license only lets me use 8 threads per vm, which is sad so not useable IMHO. Then there is Ubuntu Server, the only thing holding me back is the difficulty managing and reporting with zfs via CLI. I haven't tried anything with it so I don't know if it's that hard. I do know basic linux/Unix because I studied IT in college. Can anybody recommend anything? Add some insights maybe? For now I'm leaning towards Ubuntu Server and using zfs and docker to do everything I want.
  9. Hello I was hoping to get some feedback on a couple of points from the community regarding an upcoming build of mine. Specifically in regards to some unclear PSU requirements and RAM mfg's. Hardware (Purchased and Looking at) Currently Purchased Components: Case: Corsair Air 540 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H Drives: 2*2.5, 1*3.5 non SSD drives (Total 3) Monitors: 2*24" Monitors, 1*46" TV/Monitor (Sometimes On) List to Obtain (Looking At): CPU: Intel i7 4770 CPU Cooler: Evo 212 Drives: 1 or 2 * 2.5 SSD, 1*3.5 HDD RAM: 32Gb Dual Channel DDR3 1600 (Mfg?) PSU: Need Help Exp Cards: Second Network Card, Maybe a WiFi Card as well Potential Future Upgrades (In order of likelyhood and implementation): Additional Fans (If Current Case Design and Fans Don't Cool Optimally) Fan Controller 1 High-End Video Card (Way in the future) Sleeved Cables (Premade) LED Lighting Purpose of Build: Ok, I know at first glance some might question the CPU/Mobo combintarion as the CPU is locked and it's an OC board. I purchased this board for it's additional features over the H series and its asthetics. The RAM may be seen as being a bit of overkill, but there is a reason for it. I am building this PC to support a large lab and home production server infrastructure on one machine utilizing VM Workstation with 3 nested ESXi hosts. I will be running a fairly large number of virutal machines on this computer where 25% of the machines will be "always on" home production machines and the remaing 75% will be turned on during lab simulations, tests, or training scenarios where/as required. Hence why I need the 4770 which I need for the quad cores and hyperthreading. When all machines are on I calculate my base RAM requirements for them to be 24Gb without the host operating system. As I will want to maintain a reasonable experience on the PC itself I want the remaining 8Gb for the Windows OS and day to day computing. The 2*24 monitors will be "always connected/on" as my main displays. The 1*46 is meant to be a "NOC Command Center" type display, or to watch movies, training videos etc while I work out in the same room. I may not have it running/connected all the time. My issues for the PSU and RAM begin here. Question 1. In regards to the RAM, does it really matter for this build what RAM MFG I go with are there ones that I should REALLY stay away from? It's never going to be OC'd, it's a mostly lab machine, and for the most part it will only run business applications and server softwares. So aside from financial investment, ultimate reliabilty and feature set isn't a key requirement. I may like to go with something that matches the case/board asthetics (White or Blue) but it's not incredibly important. And I may like to keep the same MFG in the build as much as possible (IE. Corsair) but again not terribly important and was thinking I may be able to reduce costs a little bit here by using cheaper RAM/Mfgs' Question 2. When I reviewed the above requirements on some website PSU calculators with the RAM, CPU, Fans, Exp cards, Drives, Integrated Video above (excluding potenial upgrades). I pulled numbers at around 360-430w as base requirement. Leading me to believe a 600w would be adequate for my needs. My concern is if this shouldn't be higher given my high CPU/RAM load and intention on driving such a large monitor graphically with the onboard video. Should I perhaps AIM for something along the lines of a 750w for buffer. I used to be a big PC/Console gamer so I might want to do this on it in the future, but I have a new baby so the only "quality" time I will get to spend on this PC is for work/study lab purposes. Hence the "Potential Future" upgrades with graphics card being bottom of the list. It may eventually happen, if it does I don't mind buying a bigger PSU if required. Any advice, answers, comments you might have would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post. Regards, Rumblegut
  10. I have a server that is not doing much but I want to keep going, it has a software RAID(1) using mdadm that I would ideally like to keep in tack and pass through ESXi to the Ubuntu vm. So currently it is just a physical machine with no VM's on it, I want to clone it then install ESXi and put the image onto the ESXi host. I can't seem to find a good way to do it without losing my RAID. Suggestions or should I just move the data off onto a different location then install everything fresh and reset it all up?
  11. I am building a machine for my home CCNA lab, but I also play Eve Online and would like to have my home lab and gaming rig in the same box. I would like to find a decent processor which would support the necessary features required by KVM, the hypervisor I plan on installing, so that I can have multiple instances of OSes and routers running through GNS3. But, I need that processor to be fast enough to run Eve Online on top of a virtualized OS like Windows or Ubuntu. I will not be studying and gaming at the same time, so I don't need more than two operating systems running while gaming. I WILL want multiple running while I am studying. Luckily, Eve Online doesnt have very serious hardware requirements, compared to other modern games, so I don't need anything CRAZY, but they do recommend and Intel i7 series or better (Or AMD/whatever equivalent, I dont do ). I've found lots of articles and videos explaining how to build a decent virtualization lab, but those kinds of machines are optimized for running the types of services you put on a server - DHCP, FTP, VPN, etc. So, lots of cores, very slow clock speed. Am I looking for a motherboard that will support KVM and dual CPUs? One with many, slow cores and one with two really fast cores? And if so, what CPUs would you recommend? If not, what AM I looking for?
  12. Hello, my name is Blake. I am currently trying to transfer VMs from XenServer to ESXi and I am having no luck. I have the vhd's converted over to vmdks. But when I try to import them into the VM on ESXi it just instantly boots to PXE and won't go pass there. Everywhere I have looked tells me to do the steps I am doing..but I am having zero luck. Anyone know what could be causing the issue?
  13. Hey, I've been working on a server project, and i've successfully installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop and the internet works but when i installed ESXi 6.0 the lights on the ports (on the mobo and on the router) are on but the internet doesn't work? (the IPMI feature of the motherboard does work) Specs: CPU: Dual Xeon E5620 4C/8T 2.4 Ghz RAM: 6x8GB DDR3 ECC Mobo: Tyan S7012 what can i do?
  14. I recently purchased this: Dell PowerEdge R510 II 2x 2.66GHz 6-Core X5650 32GB RAM H700 512MB 2x 750w ps 8x 3.5” hot swap bays 2x internal 2.5” bays 8x 2TB 3.5” drives Will probably get 2x SSD for internal OS RAID 1 I am going to use this for a home lab ESXi server with VM’s for file sharing, Plex, Windows Server functions and anything else I can think of. However, I also want to virtualize a physical (or two) Windows desktop and move it to this server. This desktop then has to be able to be accessed like a normal physical desktop for those less technically inclined. Also, I will be doing something similar to what Linus did with his home rig as this desktop has to be accessed from wherever I wish on the network. The reason for this is to save power, take advantage of the RAID array for data integrity and have one less machine for me to maintain. I will handle all network bandwidth requirements but my main concern is software and what other physical hardware I’ll need to pull this off. Doesn’t have to be free but I want something reliable and fairly cost effective (was thinking $100-250 extra expense). My questions are thus: I will be using ESXi for the home lab server stuff so can I install unRAID (or similar) within this and have it work with a graphics card (something basic and cheap as I don’t need much for this desktop)? Or do I need to install unRAID (or similar) as the main OS and then put my desktop and ESXi into this? Or would ESXi do all that I want natively? I’ve heard (and know) you can do something hardware assigning to ESXi VM’s but not sure if to the extent of what was done in 2 Gamers 1 CPU. Willing to try a bunch of stuff if people have suggestions (and post results back) but not sure if what I want is even possible currently.
  15. So I'm trying to get a DHCP and DNS server running within vSphere. Problem is there was a MikroTik device handing out DHCP and DNS before. I turned off those services on the MikroTik, spun up the VM but it can't even consistently ping the MikroTik. I'm at a loss and don't know what it is. I have a feeling it has to be with the config in vSphere. HELP
  16. Hey guys, I've been beating my head in for 2 days over this and I cannot get it to work. I'm fairly experienced with vmware and networking. However this has me stumped. I've followed every tutorial and tips and tricks and nothing has worked. Currently I have the WAN coming in on em0 and LAN on em1. Pictures below -->

  18. Ok, so here is the setup. I recently came into a server that I have setup in my home just for messing around with. Its a HP Proliant ML350 Gen 8 with Dual Intel® Xeon® E5-2620s, 96g of RAM and 2 TB of SAS storage. It is running ESXi 6.5. My home has gigabit internet (1gbs up and 1gbs down) What would you guys do with a server like that in your home? I am very curious what would people would do with hardware like this. I am currently running a windows 2016 server VM that runs PLEX / deluge and sonar and acts as a network storage for all other PCs in the home. I also have a Ubuntu server vm that runs a webserver and MySQL server. I have an OSX VM that I use just to run OSX software I play with every now and then. I also have an older GTX 760 and GT1030 kicking around I can install in the server for PCI-E passthrough if someone can think of anything to do with those.
  19. Hello All! I'm currently building a Home Virtualization Server to run a Ubuntu Web Server VM, and Video Surveillance VM. My specs are listed below. While doing some research I came across this video and a lightbulb turned on. You see I have a MacBook and no PC, So if I could pop a GPU in this guy for games and rendering in After Effects I would be so happy! I have heard mixed reviews on ESXi GPU compatibility. Is it feasible to passthrough a AMD RX480 to a Windows 10 VM with minimal performance loss. If not could anyone recommend a card. I don't plan to use a dedicated monitor as this guy will be in a server closet. My plan is to use Steam in home streaming. I know this is a unique config but I figured that I have a ton of compute power sitting idle, why not use it? And yes I know I will lose performance by virtualizing this and using steam in-home streaming, but I am willing to live with up to a 20% performance loss if it means I don't have to build a dedicated PC. Yes I know vSphere is Windows only, I use VirtualBox on my Mac. Is this a option or should I stick with something like Un-RAID. I would prefer to use ESXi as I am somewhat experienced with it. I look forward to what the community has to say! VIDEO. 8 (or is it 10?) 20. Good Afternoon LTT, I'm currently looking at building an ESXI host with a vmware hypervisor for a home fileserver / some testing VM's. I don't need a hugely powerful machine as this will be purely for playing around with so i'm thinking minimum 16 GB RAM & 8 or more threads with 500GB of storage . I need to somehow keep the power consumption low which is very difficult with server hardware which is making me consider standard desktop components, the device will be kept in my bedroom so a 1U rack server might wear thin quickly. I have looked at just buying old server hardware from ebay e.g: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-T3600-Precision-Workstation-Octa-Core-E5-2660-Ram-16GB-HDD-1TB-NVS300-W10-/263091299204?hash=item3d4176a384:g:T8AAAOSweIlZanJy Would you recommend going for used hardware or working on a fresh build myself (looked at using a RYZEN 5 just for the fun but I know this would be a waste.) Cheers in advance!
  21. So, I'm currently parting out a ~$3,000 Server/NAS for my home. I'm going to run ESXi on it, as I will be setting up a Windows sandbox, a VPN server, as well as the NAS. PCPP: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Karokiyu/saved/dBJ6hM I've decided to go with a Xeon E5-2630 V3. It's 8 cores, which I think is enough. I may want to go with a 10 or 12 core CPU. Not sure yet. For storage, I'm going with 8x 4TB WD Red drives. I will buy 9, so I have a spare lying around, incase of a failure. The 8 drives will be in raid 6. Now, I just need to decide what kind of RAID card to use. I'm for sure using a RAID 6, and definately want to use a SAS connection. So, I will want a dual port SAS raid card That i can plug all 8 of the drives into. However, this card needs to be compatable with windows server 2012, and maybe 2016. This is my first server I've built from scratch, so please tell me things I should change, if any. Thanks!
  22. The server would be used for VMware ESXi for hosting my media streaming/file server, VPN server and PF sense. Maybe some other things later. What would you buy? Where I live it's impossible to find reasonably priced hardware, is any of this even worth thinking about?: Dell Poweredge R620 , Intel Xeon E-26XX v2 – 1 year old Dell R 710 Dual Xeon P095G XEON X5670 (2.93GHZ) - 3 years old Dell PowerEdge 310 - 3 years old HP ProLiant DL380 G6 E5540 HP HP ProLiant DL380 G7 SFF -DL380 G7 Thanks
  23. Hey Everyone! One thing that I have been learning a lot about lately is virtualization. It is a great way to try new things and be able to refresh operating systems with basically a couple clicks of your mouse. At home, I have built a virtualization server where I have created a lab environment in which I am able to learn operating systems, applications, etc.. This is definitely a cool thing and would like to know more about what the linustech community use for their virtual environments. How is your home virtualization lab setup? And what kinds of VM's do you have running? Also, what kind of hypervisor do you run? (Hyper-V, ESXI, XenServer) Look forward on hearing your setups everyone! Thanks
  24. I'm just getting into the whole virtualization scene but am hoping to get rid of a couple physical server installs at work and also set up something similar to the Gaming NAS that linus demonstrated for Unraid. The two goals are very different in what they have. An enterprise grade server vs a homebuilt gaming machine. My question is, I see a lot of different virtual controllers which I'm gathering are referred to as hypervisors or whatever their counter parts in other companies are called. My questions are; Do Vmware or any of the other similar ones to that feature a RAID system similar to Unraid's or would that be done on a RAID controller like our Perc H710 in the server? Also what would Unraid's formation be considered as since it has designated parity drives instead of all the drives sharing parity data? I still have yet to start this project and intend to dig around in each of them but was hoping to get some questions out of the way. Thanks in advance!
  25. Hi everyone. For a really long time, I have been thinking of building a lab at home for learning and gaining some hands on experience. To be better at my day job, I need to gain experience with Red Hat System Administration, Networking, VMWare ESXI, Mongodb, Sybase, LDAP, Oracle SGD, Tomcat, NAS and many other things. We are a very small team and take care of the whole infrastructure. I also want to study for the below certifications which will help me with my day job and future. (RHCE, RHCSA, CEH, CISSP, CISM). I don't have much knowledge about Networking. I want to setup routers, firewall, pfsense and make a setup with DMZ and stuff to learn about security. A year ago, I got a job at a finance corporation as Tech Support Engineer where I don't have any access to anything. I cannot learn or experiment anything at work. I am now put into a Cloudera Apache Hadoop Project. I need to build clusters with at least 8 to 10 machines. (1 Management node, 2 Master nodes, 6 to 7 Worker nodes - All these nodes which will be VMs require at least 16 to 18 GM RAM) I am going to to have to build a server to install Cloudera's Apache Hadoop Distribution and do a lot of experimenting at home. So, I will be needing a server with a lot of RAM so that I can spin up a lot of VMs and allocate a good chunk of RAM to each VM. I need a setup to learn about things used at work and also learn about things I am interested in. I didn't want to waste time researching on a motherboard and CPU that will support ESXI. So, I looked at the below server and bid $680 on it. Someone just outbid me. I live in a very small apartment and don't want to get rack servers which are going to be very loud. But if there are no other options I will have to get a rack server. I am willing to spend up to $2000 to $3000 because this will help me with doing well at my day job and also get some certifications. I also thought about buying the below ESXI supported motherboard and CPU to build a home server. I see that the below motherboards are supported.
