Budget: Under 5K USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Primarily used for gaming. Baldur's Gate, Hogwarts Legacy, Jedi Survivor. Existing Parts: Samsung Q8FN TV, Onkyo TX-NR545 Receiver, PS4 Controllers, CyberPower PFC Sinewave CP1500PFCRM2U 1000W/1500VA UPS Purchase Plan: January / early February 2024 Resolution / Refresh Rate: 4K 60Hz (would love 4K 120Hz but the limitation is the TV and receiver HDMI 2.0 ports and I won't be replacing these) Parts List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6CY76D I'll be storing the computer in my server closet where I can plug into my UPS with my other networking gear. The plan is to run a Corning Optical Thunderbolt cable to a dock in my living room which will connect to my receiver/TV. I'll connect the PS4 controllers to the computer via a USB bluetooth adapter connected to the dock. Cable Routing: GPU DisplayPort -> Motherboard DisplayPort IN -> Motherboard USB4 port (25m Optical TB3 cable) -> Plugable Docking Station USB4 Port -> Dock HDMI 2.1 Port -> Receiver STB/DVR HDMI Port -> Receiver HDMI Out -> TV I've designed/built 6 computers previously, however this will be my first build where the computer will be located in a separate room from the monitor/TV as well as my first time using a TV as a monitor. Am I missing anything obvious in this build? Any incompatibilities? Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I have a work laptop and my personal laptop. Both are Lenovos and I work with a dual monitor setup, exchanging the thunderbolt cable when I want to use one over the other. I'm wondering if there's a KVM setup that'll work with my existing docking setup (Lenovo), something like two thunderbolt cables going into a KVM then into the dock. Does this exist? Or is there another way of accomplishing this? It'd be nice to toggle between both setups easily. Thanks

Hello! Appreciate any feedback, have a silly question. What would be a good docking station to support my 4k ultra wide screen at 144hz and have multiple usbs inputs for Razer amd laptop? I understand thunderbolt is not an option with the razer and looking online I see many marketed 4k at 60hz. Wondering if there is something out there for me? Thank you!

I'm looking for a docking station/splitter so I can use the peripherals and dual monitors that I purchased for my Desktop pc that I game with, on my Laptop that i use for school work. I need to exclusively use the laptop for school work because there are programs that i have to download from the schools servers. my laptop and my Desktop both have type c input so i was hoping to find something that has 2 DisplayPort inputs and at least 4 type a inputs and audio in/out and can run separate dedicated type c for the desktop and the laptop.

help Dell XPS w/ Dell Docking Station Low Screen Resolution
Qbuchborn posted a topic in Troubleshooting
Hello and Thank you for reading my post. I Have a Dell XPS 15 9570 laptop for work, and 3x screens connected to my Dell Thunderport WD19TBS Docking station. My main screen has excellent resolution its the Samsung 49" curved (5120x1440), however my other 2 screens are 27" 4k monitors and are locked to a max of 1920x1080. I'd like to get those other 2 screens up to their normal resolution of 2560x1440 i think is the normal one. I've updated all my drivers amd chipsets. My main display is connected via D-port, my other 2 are 1x D-port and 1x HDMI. They dock is connected via thunderbolt to my laptop. Any steps on how to go about resolving this would be greatly appreciated, Dell wanted $100 to help me and that felt like a lot.- 3 replies

Hi guys, This is my first time posting here, please bear with me. In summary I'm searching for a docking station for my laptop and which will be connecting it with 2 WQHD monitors, keyboards, mouse, and other stuffs.. My laptop doesn't support thunderbolt 3 but has a mini-display port. After researching a lot on the web myself, I just can't seem to find a good fit for my requirements thus seeking help from the community here. Thanks in advance! My requirements: Monitors should run more than 120Hz refresh rate Doesn't have to charge the laptop more than 4 USB A ports more than 2 display ports, at least 1 HDMI port with ethernet cable port My budget: preferably less than 500SGD, can pay more as long as it works perfectly, seeking for quality product here. My docking station has been disconnecting entirely every 10-15 minutes, sometimes it's 25 minutes before the next disconnect occurs. My two displays go black, my speakers go boom and afterwards I hear a lot of "device connected" sounds, not just two which would be the displays. afterwards, every window that was on one of my monitors is on the display of the laptop. Should I try plugging the docking station into the other Thunderbolt port? It's the same laptop that had the audio issue I posted about a couple days ago

Hi Guys, I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to figure things out, reading, checking, testing and tbh I've had enough. I am unable to find a single Thunderbolt 3/4 docking station (that does not cost 1000 USD) which would give me: PD 65W, Ethernet, 2x USB (can even be 2.0) and DP with 4k/60Hz support, that "just works". Everything either does not have PD, only supports 4k 30Hz max, doesn't have USB, or if it has all those things, it will have huge known connection/reconnection issues, flickering screens or some other problems. Do you guys know of a good docking station (I have TB4 with 11th gen Intel Asus Zenbook 14) that would "just work"? I would be very greatful for any suggestions, as I'm already pulling my hair out here. I never imagined that now with TB it would be harder to get something working, than it was during the old Dell docking station times. Cheers

Hi Guys, I recently purchased a Dell Docking Station WD19TB and it turns out it has it's service-tag sticker removed. I know that you can extract the service-tag through software, but I can't get the necessary prerequisite to install. Details on how to extract the service-tag: Tip: How to get a docking station serial number using PowerShell : Dell (reddit.com) Do you guys know of any way to overcome this issue? All I get is an error saying "This is not a dell machine" we can't install the package. Or maybe you know of a different way to get the service-tag? Thanks in advance Cheers

Hey everyone, So my gf and I are nearing the end of our Tiny House on Wheels build and as we get closer I am starting to realize that my PC is probably going to take up too much space. Basic Specs are: Thermaltake core p3 ryzen 5800x rtx 3090 FE 32 GB ddr4 850w PSU my setup in general, however, will not be much of an issue. What I'm really worried about is space UNDER my desk. I have a 3 monitor setup which might seem like overkill but I do a lot of work from home and could not function efficiently without all 3. To accommodate this, we built our stairs in such a way that my desk will be built into the wall underneath the top step which is more like a landing. which is great for space ON the desk but underneath is a wheel well that has been framed in so I would much rather go with a laptop that I can just dock. So my question is what would be a reasonable price I could get for my current system? Would it make more sense to just sell the individual parts? and with that money what would be the best Intel based gaming capable laptop/dock combination to replace this and still support my monitor setup. Thanks

Hello everyone! I‘ve minified my PC and as part of that I threw out my last mechanical harddrive. I intended to access it via my USB 3.0 disk station as I do with other HDDs from time to time. I needed some files from it and plugged it in, Windows USB sound comes but no drive shows up. Okay not the first time this happens, checked Disk Management but nope, no drive and no partitions. Popped it in my case again and connected it with SATA, reboot and it shows up just as expected. Got my files but now I‘m sitting here trying to figure out what’s going on. HDD is a WD Blue 2TB WD20EZRZ OS: Windows 10 Pro 19041, Parted Magic 2021_02_28 USB Station: Fantec USB 3.0 Station (It's powered externally) Internal SATA: works USB Station (Windows): not showing up USB Station (Parted Magic): not showing up Tried a different HDD in the disk station: drive shows up in Linux & Windows USB Station on a different machine: not showing up Has anyone ever had a similar problem or could someone give me a clue? Hello all, So I'm working on my home office and looking at doing some upgrades to a KVM setup with 4-port. Currently I'm running a TESmart 4-port KVM with DP1.2 on a LG 38WN95C-W ultrawide monitor rated at 3840x1600 @ 144Hz. I have four systems connected: 1)Desktop running RX6800XT, 2)Desktop running GTX 1080, 3) Dell Precision laptop through a Kensington SD5600T Thunderbolt Dock, 4) Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet on a Surface Dock 1. In the current configuration, I can run full screen on all four systems perfectly fine as long as I force the monitor into DP1.2 mode which I don't mind too much since the KVM is only 1.2 compatible. My question is if I switch to a new KVM with DP 1.4 and quality cables, am I going to run into any problems with either my Kensington or Microsoft docks? ConnectPro seems to think there will be reliability issues with both docks on their DP 1.4 KVMs. To be clear, I'm not worried about pushing high refresh rates on either of those two systems as they are more for office productivity work rather than gaming. Does anyone have experience with these docks and a DP 1.4 KVM? Thanks, Marc

First time on the forum with a rather basic question: In the atteched picture (https://imgur.com/a/MrIgTPu) you can see how I imagine this setup. It´s fine if only one of the monitors is able to output at 144Hz. Can somebody give me a tip on where to find something like that? Thanks in advance! https://imgur.com/a/MrIgTPu Edit: added imgur link for picture

Hi, i'm on the surch for a decent docking station. But i have no idea how they perform or what Brand is good (or bad). Can you give me any advise? The features it must have: PD (min 60W), DP, 2x USB-A, (would be nice to have more) SD-Card Reader. (<100€) I saw there are some docking staions to insert a SSD, so it can also be used as an storage device. Is that an good idea? (if so: would be nice to have) I'd love to hear your opinon. My idea is having my keyboard and mouse connected to the docking station, so my desktop and laptop can use them when I turn either one of them on. I bought a Dell WD19 recently but just can't figure how it can work. I am assuming: Of course, the keyboard and mouse connects to the dock, then the dock USB-C goes to the laptop so it can charge the laptop and use everything like normally, but now the question is, what connects between the dock and the PC? How do I make it work? I don't really need to have both of them on the same time, I just have a gaming PC and I only want to use it for games when I turn it on, most of my work like web surfing, chilling etc would be done on the laptop. My motherboard on the PC is ROG Strix X570-I Gaming if that helps to give me advise.

I will preface this. I was unsure if this should go in peripherals or laptops. Hey, so I have come to the sad conclusion that I may need to get rid of my tower at home as I don't really use it as much since my laptop is much more convenient. I will include a parts list later on in post. I am teetering on selling my build and just running my laptop as my gaming station and my work machine. I have been looking online and can't seem to find a clear answer about a good docking station that runs on usb 3.2 gen 2 type c with power passthrough. What wattage is required to work? On top of that I would like to have at a minimum my dual monitor setup. I also would like to continue utilizing my VR headset and my keyboard/ mouse, etc. Is there a good resolution for this to just utilize my laptop to power a full workstation through one docking station? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Hi everyone, I have a Dell Latitude 7400 and I am using with a Dell P2418d monitor and having multiple cables connected to the laptop stated to annoy me so I've decided to buy a docking station for them. I've been searching for some nice docking stations and I found the Dell WD15 and the Dell TB16. These two seem to be great but I wonder if they will work fine with both my monitor and laptop. Altough, I've checked Dell's website to see if these docks support Win11 and I found out they don't so this got me curious if I buy one of them, will they work fine under Win11. So I would like to ask you if could these docks work fine with my devices and under WIn11?

Dear hivemind, I need your help in planning my next build. I am not actually looking for parts or such but more conceptual advice on how to set up my work-/gaming space. Tell me if there is a different space for such a thing. I am currently working with a gaming laptop (with Thunderbolt dock) and I am very unhappy with the performance the laptop has and constant overheating problems. So I want to switch back to using a Desktop (for Gaming) and Laptop (for work, uni, travel). But I want to be able to use both devices with my peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse etc) at the same desk. So I have a few ideas on how to fascilitate this and concerns with them. I was hoping that someone has been in a similar situation and can lend some advice. First idea: Thunderbolt 4 dock for all So both devices would share the same TB4 dock and I would just plug the dock into either the laptop or the desktop (possibly through extesion cable) Pros easy to use, simple to implement Cons Motherboards with TB4 are like twice as expensive (something like the ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WIFI at 600€ for AM5, for AM4 it would be 450€) TB4 extensions cards are not much cheaper and appearently the drivers can be quite shitty I have heard that TB on Mainboards isn't often that great and using a dock isn't as smooth as with laptops (can someone confirm or deny that? Second idea: Monitors directly connected to PC and dock Similar to the first idea, but I connect the monitors to the dock and the desktop, so the PC would not need to use the dock to display on the monitors Question Can I still use a TB4 dock if the mainboard doesn't have TB? Will it just not connect or is it just a worse perfomance? Are there any good USB4 (not TB4) docks? When searching I could only find TB docks. Pros Dektop doesn't need the use the dock for the monitors, good if the TB on mainboards isn't really that great Cons Still needs TB4 on the mainboard? Third idea: Desktop somewhere else A different idea I had was to just have the Desktop somethere else and stream games over SteamLink or something like that to my laptop Questions How stable/viable are such game straming things? Are there game stream programs for any game, as I understood SteamLink only works with Steam games? Pros Don't have to worry about dock and TB4 for the Desktop Cons Streaming my games might be unstable and will increase input lag Can you tell me if you have any experience in such a setup, what you went for, how you handled it? Any other ideas on how to set up my space are welcome. Budget (including currency): 2000 - 2500€ Country: Austria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Laptop for Programming/Working/University, PC for Gaming (more CPU heavy games like EU4, MSFS, DCS and some (graphics heavy) VR gaming) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

in the market for a gaming laptop and looking for some suggestions This is what i'm thinking for specs: - I7 - 9th gen - 16GB of RAM (although something that comes with a 1 x 8GB ram stick (DDR4 2666) would work as i have a spare to use) - HDD/SSD drive size not critical as i have a 512Gb one to slide in if needed - ideally supports an M.2 NVME drive even if it does not come with one - Graphics RTX 2060 for some longevity Although i'm looking for a laptop its most likely never going to be used as such it will just be more or less a desktop i can easily switch out accessories on. I work from home and during the day I need to have my work laptop connected to my monitors etc. but after i'm done work i'd like to switch to my personal laptop. although i'm using a USB-C docking station i have the option to switch to a thunderbolt dock if needed (work laptop support thunderbolt). I also have a sit/stand desk which makes a desktop difficult to manage even if i came up with a different solution to switch between both devices (switching inputs on the monitors etc.) I've sort of had my eye on a Lenovo Y540 which I've seen in the $1400-$1500 CAD range on the odd sale, but as it does not have thunderbolt i'm not sure I will get the graphics working via the USB-C docking station and i need to look at a thunderbolt model laptop. My monitors only support 1080p so i think the USB-C dock will work. Lastly i'm looking for some recommendation of online stops to keep an eye on for sales etc. I'm checking RFD hoping they catch most other sales but you never know.

I recently received a Dell WD19TB docking station. When I plugged it in to my Dell G7 17 7790 I got a BIOS warning that I was plugging in a power supply to a port that doesn't support charging. I click continue to bypass this and it boots just fine. I installed all the updated drivers and software that were suggested and even updated the firmware. (Note: it told me it couldn't update the firmware of my docking station but it did anyway). The docking station seems to work fine with the power adapter to it plugged in. If I unplug the power adapter the docking station stops working. I don't see any way to disable the power delivery either in BIOS or the software and drivers provided. However, I did find out that this particular docking station provides 130w of power through it's power delivery. This is not enough to charge my laptop as it requires 180w of power. I'm running it with both the laptop's power adapter plugged in and the docking station's power adapter plugged in. So far, so good. I'm not sure if I'm damaging anything over time or not. However, my feeling is that if I were going to 'fry' something it would've happened the moment I plugged it in and turned it on. Is this not true? Am I slowly damaging my laptop and not knowing it?

(If you're wondering, Mir was a space station operated by the Soviet Union and later Russia from 1986 to 2001. I named it that since my desktops are named after American ships (Apollo being my main rig) and my laptop is named Sputnik since it's made of mostly aluminium.) So for a long time I have been interested in small but powerful laptops to replace my Alienware M11xR3. While I absolutely love that machine, it's getting old and the cooling system is totally shot as well as battery replacements. $300 to drop into that machine isn't exactly a smart decision for me. After some research I stumbled across the Elitebook 2570p. It's a 12.5" laptop with a socketed CPU (and support for 4c/8t quad core chips), dual HDD/SSD and RAID support, no WiFi whitelist and a 4G card port. But the big feature for me was the support for external graphics cards over the ExpressCard bus. It seems like a very cool thing to just go to my dad's place, drop the PC down into the HP dock and then plug in a GPU and start playing games. It's similar to the Blade Stealth + Core, except that this ENTIRE BUILD (Core costs an eye watering $700 here!) costs less than the Core alone. I picked up a base model 2570p off a local large computer refurbisher at auction for $240AUD. It came with a Core i5 2C/4T CPU at 2.8Ghz, 4GBs of RAM, and a 500GB HDD. I quickly swapped out the 500GB HDD with a new one I had lying around, and took the 8GB DIMM I had in the Alienware out and swapped the old 2GB back into there. I also ripped out the DVD drive - it was just extra weight that I didn't really freakin need. This thing is pretty snappy in daily tasks - the screen isn't amazing, and it gets a little too warm for my tastes, but it runs perfectly well. The company I bought it from had cleaned out the machine top to bottom, but that isn't hard as you'll see in a minute. HP offers a 120pg book on how to dismantle and reassemble this thing. Here's some views of the inside and bottom: Now onto the interesting part: the external GPU dock, which is nicknamed 'Mir'. The Elitebook natively supports up to Nvidia Kepler GPUs, or AMD and later Nvidia cards by using a memory override. This didn't matter to me, as I had a 770 sitting in my main system ready to be upgraded. It also supports hot-plugging the GPU and using the internal display for gaming with the GPU via Optimus. I ordered a GDC Beast v8 Expresscard to PCI-E 16x converter for just $50 off eBay, and it arrived at my door around a month after. It included a small plastic box with a couple ports and a PCI-E 16x slot on top, a data connection to ExpressCard cable, and a 20+4pin connector to their proprietary standard cable. Pretty freakin' cool. I then went on a search for a good cheap PSU. Efficiency didn't matter shit, as long as it was from a name brand and has 6+8pin connectors, I'd take it. I found a local place that tears down computers, and I got a cheap Cooler Master 500W PSU with 2x6pin, one through dual molex conns for $25 (before it ran a 2600k and a 570 afaik), and then ordered a 2x molex to PCI-E 8pin for $7 delivered. (For the PSU Nazi Squad, it doesn't really matter since it isn't even hitting 300W load out of 500W if I used a 770) Disaster strikes, and I'm fairly sure my 770 is stone-dead. I couldn't get it to boot, but I didn't try reseating it, instead just ripping it out of my system and dropping in my new 1070. My local PC shop didn't have a system to test it in, and I was again on the look for a new Kepler GPU. And this is where this story ends for now. To-do: - Get the special case that GDC offers for the Beast. It's not a priority, but if it's cheap I'm totally in. - Get a new Kepler GPU. Maybe 760, 780, or 780Ti. I'm gaming at 900p here, so it doesn't really matter that much. - Get a 3rd Gen i7-quad to go into the laptop. This will bring me up to desktop i5-tier performance. - Make mods to the cooling system. Make this thing not run so hot and heck, maybe even make it last longer on battery. - Get an SSD. This thing badly needs one. - Get the plastics kit from HP to get a space saver for the ODD bay. I don't need it, it's 2017 for fuck's sake. - Test everything. If you read to here, you're awesome . This is just a little side project of mine that I wanted to share with all of you here.

Hi, first timer here. Avid tech nerd but stumbled across a confusing problem that ticked me off twice too many last few days. My girlfriend recieved an HP Elite X2 1012 G1 from work recently and I've set up a desk station to dock it into with a BenQ BL3200PT, an ethernet cable to our LAN and some basic peripherals. Since the Elite X2 has a grand total of TWO (I kid you not, two) USB ports, one Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C and one type A 3.0, that poses a problem. So I dongled up and to probably nobodys surprise the power passthrough from the laptops AC adapter through the dongle (Satechi Type-C Slim Multipower Adapter 4K) didn't work. The dongle worked passivly but without power and no way to charge the laptop in dock it's useless, so that was returned instantly. The Elite X2 claimed not enough power was delivered through the charge port and refused, so I figured I'd over shoot instead and get a USB-C station with a separate AC adapter delivering a higher wattage than required by the computer, which has an AC adapter of 60w. I got an Asus one promising to deliver up to 90w via USB-C, plugged it in and got nothing. The Elite X2 refuses to draw power at all, but the dongle itself while disconnected from AC works same way the previous one did. Now to the actual question - HP are savage enough to charge some 200+ dollars for their own Thunderbolt docking station specificly made for the Elite X2 1012 and none of us feel like shelling out that amount unless there's no other option, and paranoid tinfoil hat me is starting to realise this is probably a purposly made limitation to push their own solution. What I'm wondering though is, provided I find a USB-C dongle with equal power delivery, would the laptops charge port still refuse it because of some driver BS or is the passthrough in the dongles nothing that goes through any chip set that can ID and "block" functionality of the unit if the HP gods decide against it? Does passthrough power on USB-C dongles usually muck around this much, and has to be matched exactly with the AC adapter the target computer came with? I've used overpowered and underpowered chargers with my old Asus Zenbook and that worked fine, minus the underpowered one where drainage at high load was higher than charge input so it lost battery while plugged in. But it still "worked" the way the charger was intended, just at a lower effect. This isn't the case with the HP Elite X2. So yeah, wall of info. Please help us not pay HP 200 bucks. Also I will accept ghetto solutions, and if anything has to be sacrificed it's the ethernet port because our WiFi is decent and her area of use doesn't require insane network/internet speeds. So for example USB 3.0 type A-dongle with HDMI capabilities over 2560x1440@60Hz would be an option. Especially if theres a combination one with a USB-port aswell. /M

Hey everyone, so I've bought a used Thinkpad X1 (non-carbon) laptop from 2011 for my dad. I've noticed it has a connector at the bottom that looks like a docking station thing, but I can't find one online. Any idea which might work? Also, I can't configure the fingerprint reader, it just leads to a dead URL. Running Windows 7. Any idea how to fix it? Lastly, the 3G module doesn't seem to work/be detected, though it's physically there and easily accesible. Any tips? Thanks in advance, John

The problem is that I have only one desk, one 60 hz full hd monitor (hdmi), one mouse and one keyboard. I also have one set of stereo speaker on my desk and one headset for my gaming sessions. Now the optimal set up would be where I can switch between all 3 devices when ever I choose. They dont have to work simultaniously but i dont want any input lags or performance issues. I have read a bit about KVM sitches but it seems that this might not be the right solution as I just dont know how to connect my laptop or my dex station to it. I thought about using a 3 port HDMI switch but than i would need to replug my ethernet, mouse and keyboard everytime. So you see, i am lost .... any idea would be greatly apreciated. Thank you very much in advance ! Kind regards from Hamburg !
