I have: Late 2009 iMac 10,1 OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz Socket 775 4GB RAM 500GB HDD Obviously I’d max out the memory to 16GB. Thinking about swapping in an SSD for my boot drive. This takes a Socket 775 CPU. The fastest one in that form factor is a Xeon X3380. Does anyone know if I could swap the Xeon CPU into an iMac, or does Apple lock it down, only allowing the CPUs they initially offered? If it is possible would the performance increase be worth it? Would I run into issues with thermals? Is the overall upgrade worth it? This is my old, casual use computer. Browsing the web (lots of tabs open at once), watching videos, etc. I have an M1 Mac Mini for my creative endeavors.

Building a super cheap pc for the heck of it, just got the last part (motherboard) today. The cpu fan speeds up and slows down constantly when turned on, and there's no video signal. Tried reseating ram and different ram. I'm afraid there may be bent cpu socket pins causing this issue, I'll attach a picture. Is it even possible to bend the socket pins back if that's the problem? in a low budget (under £100) used pc, should i go with a core 2 duo at 2.67ghz for £15 or a core 2 quad at 2.66ghz for £25 including the motherboard (£13). the price is a big difference in a build with this low of a budget (10-15%). the core 2 duo would allow for a better gpu, or a non juryrigged cooler, or a better psu (the british used psu market is shit, any £20-£40 new psu reccomendations for old inneficient graphics cards?) Please advise on psu (anywhere but new please), cpu (i have 2 choices) and gpu (used, under £35 from cex, ebay for 1080p low or 720p gaming)

My friend recently put together a budget gaming rug (when I say budget, I mean like Scrapyard Wars budget: $220) so he got a pre-built (Core 2 Duo Q6500, 6 GB DDR2) and paired it with a used HD 7950. The graphics card is more than enough for the games he play (World of Tanks on a 900p monitor) but the CPU introduces some serious bottlenecks, with occasional hangs and stutters in game. I've been suggesting a Mobo, cpu, and RAM upgrade, but he doesn't have the money, and it works 'mostly' fine for him. However someone online suggest he 'unpark' his CPU. Now, I had never heard of this. So I researched it online (I'm not THAT lazy) but information is spotty, and I really have no idea if he is experiencing any performance increase. I think from the information I gathered that it prevents the CPU from 'parking' unused cores in idle, so I think it may just be needlessly consuming more power, but I'm curious if any of you have heard of it? Does it really improve performance? Or is it just a waste of time?

I have an Acer M5711 desktop computer. It currently has an Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 CPU, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and an AMD Radeon HD 6570 graphics card. My mother bought me this PC since 2008 and of 2017 I told her if we can probably upgrade to a newer desktop computer with an Intel core i3 or an i5 CPU but she said "no" since the old reliable is still working perfectly fine. I'm a high school student with no source of income and I was able to save enough cash around $130 from my lunch money to buy a new GPU. I would probably go for the Nvidia GTX 750ti instead of the Nvidia GTX 1050ti because I feel worried that the latest GTX 1050ti won't be compatible with my old 2008 Acer FMCP7AM motherboard (Nvidia Nforce 730i Chipset). So will the Nvidia GTX 750ti be bottlenecked by my Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 CPU? I only intend to play games like CS:GO, TF2, Minecraft, Euro Truck Simulator 2, American Truck Simulator, NFS Most Wanted 2012, NFS Rivals, and NFS World Offline from low to medium settings at 1366x768 resolution with a consistent 60FPS+. So any thoughts, comments and opinions? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Next week I'm picking up this used PC with a core 2 duo, an old graphics card (I will replace with my 560 ti) and 3GB of DDR2 ram. I bought this PC because it comes with a 500W power supply and a decent case but also because of its lga 775 socket. Will the 3gb of drr2 ram effect gaming performance much, even with everything closed? or should I just upgrade my motherboard to a later DDR3 lga 775?

So I got this laptop from a friend. It's an old Acer Aspire 4330. This laptop has... issues, to say the least. Anyways, I've actually had this laptop for about a year and a half. It's been sitting in a drawer doing nothing. Today, I've decided to fix it up, it's a new project laptop. I'm going to see how much I can push this. Anyways, The specs are a single core Celeron 575 @ 2GHz, obviously the fastest CPU ever. 512MB of DDR2 RAM, Intel integrated graphics, 120GB HDD, and Windows Vista Home Basic. Yeah, not sitting pretty at all. And as you can see from the photos, it ain't clean looking at all: Pretty dirty. So here's what I've done so far. I cleaned the laptop: Looks much better now, so then I upgraded the RAM to 2GB. Not a lot of RAM still, but hell of a lot better than 512MB. Anyways, at first I tried to use Windows Vista, and, it wasn't great. It ran okay, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't an amazing experience. Acer even had this cool wallpaper that'd play showing off the Aspire 4330 line, and it lagged on this machine, bad. This is a screensaver made by Acer for this laptop, and it ran like shit. Also, Google Chrome isn't supported on Vista anymore. So I went to Intel ARK. What do you know, the 575 is a 64-bit CPU. So I loaded Windows 10 on here, 64-bit. It.. installed, but it's extremely slow. Obviously the next thing to do would be to run Cinebench. Here's the score from this single core power house. 37. Obviously the best score ever. Anyways, I stripped down the laptop and cleaned out a bunch of dust from inside the fan. This CPU uses Socket P, so theoretically I can upgrade the CPU. I think I'll try that. I'm not getting a CPU over $5 and I'm shooting for a Core 2 Duo, I'll see what happens there. The trackpad is also dead, though, it has to use an external mouse. The F key is also missing, but if you touch the contact, it'll still type, so there's that. Anyways, this is looking to be a fun project. Side note, it took about 25ish minutes to complete the CPU test on Cinebench.

So I'm building a mining rig for basically almost free. I did buy a RX 550 for a really good price at Micro Center when I was in Dallas. Anyways. I got the mining build put together. Anyways, the build: (I didn't bother changing prices) PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel - Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz Dual-Core Processor (Purchased For $0.00) Memory: Crucial - 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR2-800 Memory (Purchased For $5.00) Memory: Crucial - 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR2-800 Memory (Purchased For $5.00) Memory: Crucial - 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR2-800 Memory (Purchased For $5.00) Memory: Crucial - 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR2-800 Memory (Purchased For $5.00) Video Card: PowerColor - Radeon RX 550 2GB Red Dragon Video Card ($78.98 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA - 550W ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $39.99) Other: Intel DG33BU (Purchased) Total: $138.97 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2017-08-24 01:16 EDT-0400 So at first the computer wasn't displaying anything, but fans were spinning. So I tried it with an old HD 6770, booted right up and installed Windows. Tried to put the 550 back in there, same issue. In fact though, with the side panel off, the case fan and the CPU cooler fan spins up, but the 550's fan spins up then stops, spins up and stops. I just want to get this to work and throw it in a corner and forget, letting it mine 24/7 since I don't have to pay for electricity at college. What's going on?

Hello Linus tech tip forum. I was wondering since one of my friends told me to upgrade to a newer architecture for cpus if I should upgrade my i7 3770k to a g4560 since it supports ddr4 ram and also has smaller nanometers. He thinks buying used stuff is bad and newer architectures are a lot better than older ones like mine.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ40-647TU which my father bought back in 2009/2010 which has a T6600 inside(2.2GHz,FSB 800MHz) My question would be is it possible to upgrade to a faster model of the core 2 duo line-up, say for example a t9900 or a core 2 quad? (Please don't say get a new laptop)

So I'm in the process of upgrading my pc, or am going to be, once the next generation of hardware comes out. I currently have a i7 4770k, 16gb RAM, and 2x GTX 770. My original plan was to upgrade and build a server as I upgrade. Coffee-Lake was originally thought to be releasing at the end of summer, and I was going to then use my 4770k and RAM/Motherboard (maybe 770 once I upgrade to Volta, and MAYBE upgrade to 10gb network) to build a server. Unfortunately, it is now beginning to look like Coffee-Lake won't release until Q1 2018. I definitely want to build a server this summer, and I have a list of things I want it to run/do. Most importantly, I want it to be a NAS, run Plex, CouchPotato, OpenVPN, and text me when an item from ebay is in stock (this I only need once). There will most likely only be one person streaming from Plex, and would AT MOST ever be two. I do have an old HP Inspiron 530 with a core 2 duo that isn't currently doing anything. It was very basically upgraded (4gb RAM, better PSU, GTS 450), but I know I would still be using handicapped hardware (SATA 2, I could at least throw a cheap gb NIC in). My question is this: I want to build a server this summer for basic functionality, and to learn the ropes of more advanced Linux. Plus, I know it would be easier the second time around if I already built a similar one this summer. Would the HP be able to handle the workload, even if it runs a bit slower than ideal? Just as a temporary basis until Intel Coffee-Lake releases? Side note question: Would there be any benefit of putting a 770 in this sort of server, or should I stick in an old GTS 450 or a low profile Radeon 7450?

Hi. Before you say it, I'm using usb 2... So I am installing freenas. Then I got this. Every time i try to install i get error 19 and a mountroot thing. Grrrr. Just upgraded the mobo and cpu to an hp Compaq socket 775 motherboard and an E6320 core 2 duo because of weird pcie errors... And because of the limitations of a sempron 3400+... tried reformatting. Is 2gb of ddr2 going to cut it? Or is that my problem. I have a stick of 1gb I can put in... I need help.... I don't know anything about freenas.... except for the fact it is a pain. I also am using freenas 9.3 James

Hi everyone! I'm trying to do a project for school, specifically trying to make the smallest PC I can using a spare Core 2 Duo I had laying around. Does anyone know of some extremely small mobo's that I won't have to pay a pretty penny for? Thanks in advance.

My old Lenovo desktop PC, which intrigued me now, which I found out is an Ideapad K200, needs to be upgraded to make it survive another 10 years. It's built on an LGA 775 socket (which is the main reason I'm asking questions here), with an Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 CPU @ 2.2 GHz, 2GB DDR2 RAM, Nvidia Geforce 210. I have attached a CPU-Z datasheet which tells its specifications in detail. I have NEVER ever built a PC till now. So, there's no experience. But I do know that upgrading to an SSD will bump my performance. There are some basic questions that I need to ask. My PC tells me that it's a 32-bit PC but checking on Intel's website it tells me it has a 64-bit instruction set. So what is it? Can I possibly upgrade to a more powerful chip on the same mobo? Is there any available-in-market, top-notch processor (like a Xeon) that I can install? (My own research narrowed down the options though). I can't find what's compatible with my motherboard. Can I install more RAM (or Possibly DDR3) if I upgrade to a 64-bit processor? Power supply needed for the upgrade. OR You want to tell me that I should scrap the system and build a new one. In that case, it will be a budget build. $200-$250 budget. A nice mobo-CPU-cooler-PowerSupply combination suggestion will be needed. Thank you for your time! USER-PC.txt

So I inherited an old hp prebuilt from my grandfather after he passed and it's just sitting around collecting dust because it's still running XP. I wanna put it to use as a garage pc that I can browse the web and maybe stream music while I work on my car. Problem is it's running what I'm assuming is an Allendale core 2 duo, because it's a dual core running at 2.4ghz and the time frame fits the bill, and I've only got 2gb of ram. So what I'm looking for is something light weight that's gonna actually run slightly quicker than the speed of paint drying without sinking any money into what is essentially e waste.

Hey Guys, Hope everyone is doing fine. I have a computer with gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 lga 775 motherboard with Core 2 duo E6700 with intel stock cooler, which works fine 3 gb ram, but as the cpu is not greatly suitable for everyday tasks i decided to upgrade my CPU to Core 2 quad 9400 i checked motherboard compatibility it is compatible, but when i swapped the CPU the pc started running, all fans running however the screen on monitor is stuck at motherboard post screen, my keyboard and mouse are not working, cannot boot into BIOS i initially thought the issue must be with the ram but they seems to work fine with my old cpu. Did i buy a faulty CPU?? i bought it online with no return policy. I am literally stuck with this situation any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks and regards,
