So me and some friends have been discussing technology recycling, computer repair shops, and accessibility in our area. needless to say we are frankly disgusted. In the area " 200+ miles in any direction " technology recycling is exclusively for profit, even entities that claim to be non-profit and accept volunteer help, operate exclusively to salvage precious metals, scrap or sell at outrageous prices for outdated equipment. We want to change that. Our main discussion has been the free geek model or at least the spirit of it. Taking in donations from the private sector, government entities, and so on. Sorting, recycling, disposing, repair, training and our main focus. Giving access to students and families free technology that would have otherwise been torn to pieces for a spec of gold.... So. We are we asking A little guidance. What should our best route to accomplish this or process to get started. We would like to hear from some experienced individuals that are already doing similar activities. This may sound alittle cocky. But I'd love to shut these other places down from taking and accepting perfectly good items and turning them into grounded up bits of metal and plastic Hopefully I'm posting this in the correct area.. ?

My new computer has been having some issues. Specs CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5 GHz 8-Core Processor GPU: Gigabyte GAMING OC Rev 2.0 GeForce RTX 3060 12GB 12 GB Video Card MotherBoard: MSI PRO B650-P WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard Ram: G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart 700 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply I've had this issue where when I turn on my computer the screen stays black and then I have to turn it off and then on and usually that gets it open. once the screen turns on this screen shows up with a bunch of text and at the bottom of it, it says device not found. then it shows my motherboard brand where I can go to bios and then I'm in. I have no idea how to fix this and want it to stop. NewProblem 2. My Computer monitors have been randomly going black and all of my hardware turns off, so my mic, keyboard mouse, and headphones but my computer stays on. I've noticed that an orange and red light turns on on my motherboard and the way I've fixed this issue is just by turning it off and on again and problem 1 still occurs. This just started today and I don't know what triggers it, but it has happened 3 times now and after the first time my computer had only been back on for about an hour and then the 2nd time was only 30 minutes. 3rd Problem. Whenever I try to download AMD Adrenaline I get two conflicting errors. the first error tells me that my graphics driver is not compatible with Adrenaline and it gives me a link to a compatibility software driver checker. When I download and run it, it tells me that my drivers are actually compatible and the problem persists

Not really sure where to post this, but I'm trying to get into computer repair (central Florida area). I'm just not really sure where to start, I've been looking into certifications and some form of schooling but I don't really want to go for a full degree. if anyone is in that industry and can give me some ideas that would be very helpful.

Hi everyone, Do you recommend Wix website builder for a small business? I started my own computer repair business and am attracted to Wix's ease of use and "free" price tag. I was very happy with what it created for me with it's automated "artificial intelligence." It's my understanding that you have to pay to remove ads and that it can be slow. However, I am only targeting my county and don't expect heavy traffic. I want a blog, social media links, About me, Contact info, and probably won't being doing e-commerce, at least not at this time. Of course will be doing SEO. What are your thoughts? Is "free" too good to be true?

My friend and I are working on starting a computer Building/Repairing business. Building because that is what we mainly want to do, and repairing because from our research, you basically need to do repairs to have any chance at success. Anyway, we have a very, very low budget at least for now which makes getting ourselves out there a bit difficult. Craigslist, offerup, and a few other similar sites wont let our ads stay up, which is fair, because that is technically against their rules, just a bit frustrating, because for the brief time that craigslist was allowing it, it was helping us quite a bit. We have business cards, because, well it's cheap, and useful. Other than that our budget will be $0 for a while until we can be a bit more confident, and well also, we may or may not be 15 so money is limited. For now we just want to get enough work to keep some momentum with this as a bit of a side thing, but in the future would like to pursue the idea of getting into some retail space and going for gold. For now though, is there any specific place to go or thing to do for little to no money that can help us get our name out there? Also what kinds of ads are and are not worth it? I've heard that a lot of ads marketed for small businesses are complete wastes of money. To be completely honest I don't know if I am posting this in the right place, if not could you point me in the right direction? I have already posed in several small business and entrepreneurship subreddits, and I didn't get a whole lot of traction from what I learned there, but I was thinking there may be somebody here who has started a business like this in the past? Anyways, thank you even just for reading this, whether you know any good advice or not, I still appreciate the time that you took to read this, and if you can help me, that would be great!

Just for context I normally don't get heated and very little have I had to do what I did to this guy, he gave me no choice and I tried everything to help him out. Had a guy come into the shop I work at because his "Enthusiast" grade PC couldn't hold a steady FPS and was crashing pretty frequently, also coming at me with the "My computer has so much less fps than this guys does on youtube, with the EXACT SAME PARTS!" So I check it in and start going to work running diagnostics.... not a bad system 2700x, GTX 2080ti, Nice X470 Motherboard, Samsung nvme drives, the whole nine yards, cable management is not the best but it's the guys first build. Notice only one stick of ram, not even a heat spreader on it just a green DDR2 looking stick of ram, pull it out, start inspecting. Smells crispy, no name brand anywhere, only a single sticker and in the most shotty looking print job it said... DDR4 4GB 1600mhz. So I grab a 2x16GB kit of Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 3200mhz off the shelf and slap those puppies in, the whole computer was RGB except for the Ram so it was a pretty addition as well as functional. Turn computer on no longer crashing, FPS is solid. Butter smooth. Call this guy up ask him my usual spiel. "Hey where did you get that ram module from?" customer, "Just on Ebay, didn't think it was a problem just made sure it was DDR4 and at least 4GB." Tell the guy the ram is garbage and 4GB 1600mhz is way to low for a 2700x build, he says no it's not it's fine with what I have and if it's bad it has a lifetime warranty with Samsung, I try not to laugh and tell the guy he got screwed, he says fine, what will it take to fix it? Feel bad for this guy so I tell him the retail price for the ram I replaced it with, not even going to charge for my time or anything I even cable managed the system for him just to be nice. Guy says that's way to expensive I only paid $15 for that ram and you want to charge me $250 for what you have? What a rip, you're trying to screw me! Tell him I'm not I did 4 hours labor on it, cable managed it for him and am not charging him for any of that because I felt bad and wanted to help him out and get it going so he's happy. He says whatever, what a load of horse shit go to hell! I tell him fine sir you wanna be that way your bill is now the $250 for the ram plus $340 for services and time spent, not usually that high but I've logged about 4 hours on this system already and am really sick of this guys attitude. He says F off I'm not paying that I can't even afford the $250 for just the ram.... all my money went into the computer when I built it... really man why even bring it in somewhere that's going to charge you for fixing it?? Tell him ok we can hold onto it until you can pay us then you can have it back. Guy says no effing way I'm calling the cops, I just laugh and say go ahead you signed a check in waiver when you brought it in that gives us the right to hold the computer until we are paid for services and if you if refuse to make the payment after 30 days we can sell said item to make up for goods or services not payed for. He says I'm suing yadda... yadda... yadda, he cries, begs and finally says I'll be there Friday after I get paid. Needless to say he never came in, computer was here for 41 days, I left several very persistent messages about one a week, finally gave up and sold the system. Made a pretty decent profit because I only had the ram into it so I believe it was about $2600 in profit. I sold it for $2850 and it's been a month or two since then and I haven't heard a thing from him. Several morals to the story but the main one is don't be a dickwad to the guy fixing your $2900 system, and then refuse to pay him. Some say I try to hard, but some say it's just enough.

Hello! We are developing a game with a cool idea! We want to create the first computer repair simulator. We would love to have some feedback or some ideas or both! The game is in a really early stage and we have so many ideas but we are not sure what the people would like to see from such a game. We also hope that i can be used as a learning tool. Somewhere around September to November we will release a playable scenario for testing . Why don't you check it out here : http://computer-repair-simulator.com/

Hello, I am 17 and very interested in starting my own In-home computer repair service. I really enjoy working with and building computers, but so far I've only really put this to use by build a few PCs and help my mom with tech issues. Linus mentioned on the WAN show that fixing people's PCs would make a decent amount of money. This is a job I would actually enjoy, and is very convenient because I have some health issues that make it tough to get jobs other places. My question is, how do I get certified/trained enough so that I am able to do this. I understand the components of the computer and would be able to get new ones at the best price I could find. I love working with people, and have learned how to put up with people not completely understanding how to use the computer. I love linux, and even though I'm not an expert, I could help people install it onto their old computers (if of course, I knew that it would 100% work for them). I also use Windows a great deal and can install drivers and programs, and reset their password. I can reformat or completely wipe a hard drive, and reinstall an OS for someone. I also think I could do a good job with promotion of my business, since I am decent with photoshop. That said, I do have things I don't know. I have had absolutely zero experience with Macs. How badly will this effect my business, and is it worth it investing the 1000$ or so to get one and learn how to fix? I theoretically could clean out a virus using bootable disk, but how could I get experience actually doing this? What other windows problems do I need to learn how to deal with? Do I need certification or insurance? Anything else I need to know? The good thing is that my parents are willing to help me to take any classes / cerification I need. Also, if I did absolutely need a Mac in order to be competive, I could probably split one with my brother who really wants one to help him with music production. I would love any advice, tips, feedback, or experiance on these or any other topics. Thank you for any help! Have a fine day!

I have just recently started doing odd-jobs and stuff for people on my list of services I put Computer repair. I have heard mixed things about how much to charge for computer repair, I saw that some people charge $30 plus parts for Hard Drive replacement plus parts and like $95 for motherboard replacement plus parts. The computer repair services I was thinking of offering would be mainly hardware replacements, upgrades, virus removal and software issues. Any ideas on how much to charge?

I'm thinking of applying for a job a computer repair shop down the road from me. I've never been there before, since my dad and I have always done our own repairs (he majored in Comp Sci and works IT). I was wondering if I really have a chance at getting employed there. First, and most importantly, 16 on January 4th, and I have never had a job before. I think I have the knowledge to work there, but I'd like a second opinion. What should I make sure I know going into it? What kind of questions might they ask? Should I have some kind of resume, and what should I put on it?

I am planning on starting a business with a good friend of mine @Paralectic. The reason for this is that we get asked to either build or fix computers from time to time, so we thought "Why not make money while doing so?" What we want to do is: - Delete all the bloatware and useless tool bars they have installed. - Make back-ups and install newer versions of Windows. - Give advice on how to keeping their computer fast and clean. - Installing the necessary programs to do the above. - Buy and build PC's for our customers. (Suggested by @kameshss) Our strategy: - Make a Facebook page, website, business cards and maybe local advertising to get known. - Try our service with friends first to see if they like it and get advice on how to make it more pleasant for the customers. - Go to the actual homes of the people that are having problems. - Give free stuff to loyal costumers (Suggested by @0r10n) (We live in The Netherlands). We do not have a name for the company yet, we are open to suggestions (Our names are Mike & Dave). Any kind of advice is very much appreciated.
