My computer started having this issue where when I opened certain intensive games, I would get visual glitches and coil whining. Now, depending on the game only one happens, or the other or both. Also, the coil whining goes through my headphones. At least, I think it is coil whining. Its basically a screeching sound that keeps going until after a few seconds it'll mute all audio, showing back up a few seconds later. If I mute the applications audio it still screeches, sometimes it'll blast my audio so loud that its deafening. The audio also makes noises outside of games, like when I'm watching Netflix or YouTube, it'll do an occasionally popcorn crunch sound. I've tried a DDU, fresh install of drivers, reseating the GPU and that's all. I'd like to mention that I use HDMI audio and graphics. I also have a Bluetooth USB that I use to connect my wireless headphones, where I hear the "coil whining" from. Honestly, I would just like some pointers to which part I should replace. From the research I've done online, it seems like a replacement is in order. I just don't know whether or not this is a graphics card issue, a PSU or motherboard. If anybody knows how I could deduce the issue I would be willing to try, but really I just want to replace parts and be done with it.

PSU: Corsair rm650x (2018) GPU Old : GTX 1060 Mini ITX OC 3G GPU New: Fighter AMD Radeon™ RX 6600 8GB GDDR6 Case: Fractal Pop Air TLDR: New 132W GPU go bzzzzz desperate to get one that doesn't bzzzzz since old 1060 3gb 120W doesn't bzzzzz I've been trying to upgrade my PC into a silent one for a while now, I didn't get rid of my HDD yet but Im almost there. In order to get to get the pc to be as silent as possible I got a fractal design pop Air because I've read that even thought Air cases leak more noise outside, there's not going to be noise in the first place if you can run the fans on the PC at slower speeds while still getting good temps. Recently I got a RX 6600 PowerColor Fighter since it's got a TDP of 132w which is only slightly higher than my previous GPU, a GTX 1060 Mini ITX OC 3G with a TDP of 120w. One of the reasons that pushed me to do it (aside from the price and that 8GB of VRAM are better than 3) is that I read that GPU coil whine is very common (even on high end cards) so I thought that a low TDP card would have lower chances to whine, specially considering that the 1060 is dead silent an runs cool unless pushed to its limit, in which case the temps are still really good and it's also relatively quiet even inside the pop air case (and it doesn't whine either). I've also read that single fan GPUs are the noisiest and hottest out here, and since my 1060 is silent while being a single fan GPU, I thought the 6600 could only be better due to it having two fans and only a slightly higher TDP. Well... The card whines when being pushed to the limit, but at least not in the form of a high pitch but rather a constant buzzing that I assume is generated by the electricity circulating through the GPU or something, it somehow remembers me of a fountain. It is still very noticeable tho because I have sensitive hearing, it's specially noticeable at night. I know it's due to it's usage because as soon as I alt f4 of the demanding game the noise stops instantly so it's not a fan or hardrive (I also tested this with the HDDs disconnected). I placed my ear around the case with the side panel open and I'm pretty sure the wining comes form the GPU itself, not the PSU. I tried undervolting the card through the AMD drivers but the noise persists (I can't go any lower than 1090 mV or games crash). The only way for the card not to whine is to not use it at 100%, which is the whole point, I mean, I paid for the whole GPU I'm going to use the whole GPU, the headache that comes with it is not on the spec sheet tho. Another problem this card has is the zero RPM, the card goes from dead silent to moving the fans at 1300 RPM, turns out that's the minimum speed that can be adjusted in the fan curve, which is 35%. So I downloaded MorePowerTool to try to make it run slower and now the card can run to a minimum of 600-800 RPM which is really good, or would be if it wasn't because then the fans make some high pitched squeaky noise. I think it's due to the bearings because I tried gently stopping the fans with my fingers and as soon as the fan stops the noise is gone. Letting them spin again makes the noise reappear. I don't know if this noise means the fans are bad or if it's just the bearings being cheap, but I haven't heard it from any other fan inside a pc. I can hear them from my desk at night (the pc itself is at floor level elevated with a wood platform). Also, I don't know if it makes any difference but the 1060 uses 6 psu cable pins while the 6600 uses 8. My question is: If a single fan GPU from 2016 can be quiet and coil free, why are modern GPUs full of coil whine? Isn't there any model that just doesn't whine? At this rate I feel like Im going to end up returning half of the world's GPU stock to get a decent one. Can't some organization create coil whine certification standards or something? Maybe I should forget about getting an air mesh case... AND WHY WON'T ANY REVIEWERS WARN ABOUT THIS? :'/ Lots of people say this is normal that it's just physics or something. That's a really bad argument. Components catching fire is just physics too but engineers are capable to build components that don't catch fire. So why won't they build components that don't whine? I can only assume that's because doing so would make them more expensive, and since most people not only swallow up coil whine but also tell others to put up with it without considering their hearing might work differently... they don't bother. Please correct me if Im wrong.

Hey everyone, so I’ve upgraded to an asus strix 3080 OC from a gtx 1080 strix OC and I’m unfortunately experiencing micro stuttering, not to mention the frigin thing has coil whine… but that’s the least of my problems. The micro stuttering isn’t incredibly bad, i wouldn’t say it makes a game unplayable, but it makes you so annoyed that you just wanna punch something. My system can definitely handle the power which is why this makes no sense, and it doesn’t micro stutter on every game which is super strange. My system has an I9 10900k @3.7ghz, 32gb of Corsair ram @3600mhz (I have xmp1 on), 850W Corsair power supply, ASUS ROG STRIX Z490-E GAMING motherboard, 1TB western digital ssd, and of course the rtx 3080 OC. I’m just so puzzled bc I had no issues with my 1080, and when you pay for an EXPENSIVE gpu aka the 3080, you expect it to be a no bs smooth experience in the games you play. It does it on red dead redemption 2 (story mode), gta5 (story mode and online), a new BR called super people, Outer Worlds, and Jedi fallen order. I’ve tried so many things, and yes I’ve uninstalled the drivers with DDU and used the custom installation method to have a clean instal with the nvida drivers. I’ve done other things as well like mess with the prefer max power in the nvida 3D settings, which honestly made some games crash after a while of playing. At this point I’m thinking it’s just a faulty card, maybe something is wrong with the memory in the gpu, or maybe I just have to much RGB lmfao. I should probably add that I use msi after burner to monitor everything. The frame time, frame rate, temps, gpu/cpu usage… all looks fine other than the damn frametime and micro stutters. Although I have noticed in some instances where when I do get a micro stutter or stutter in general, the gpu usage spikes down and the cpu usage spikes up for a split second, which in some cases when that happens the cpu usage will actually be higher than the gpu, then goes back to normal which is so weird!! Non of it makes sense to me and I’m just so mad, the FPS in my games are incredible but this micro stutter bs is getting to me! I’m about to send it for repair through asus or ask for a replacement but it’s just so strange that maybe it’s something stupid and not gpu related at all. My monitor is a 1920x1080p 1ms 144hz asus monitor, which this one is prob 5 or 4 years old now and it doesn’t have gsync or adaptive sync… could that be an issue??? I would really appreciate some help or advice if possible, sorry for the long thread but I wanted to get everything out there.

Hey everyone, I want to get the new RTX 4070 SUPER. I watched some videos on yt and looked on google in general but I cant find any article about coil whine. Thats probably because it just got launched. So does anyone know if this card has issues with coil whine or how likely it is that this card has coil whine. P. S. Please dont write that all GPUs have coil whine. I just want to know if the card produces much noise.

Hi, so I've upgraded my whole build except my GPU which is a 5-year-old 1070 ti. My old PSU was a terrible one in terms of the PSU tier list which is a 520 Watts Seasonic M12II EVO 80+ Bronze (Tier E), although I never had any problems with it. I have upgraded to a 650 Watts Seasonic Focus GX 80+ Gold which is Tier A and a very high quality PSU. My problem is my GPU suddenly had coil whine while it is under load/gaming which is weird since it did not have coil whine on my last build or even if it did, it is not noticeable. The past PCIe cable I've used on my old one is just a normal one-to-one 8-pin PCIe cable. While the new one that came with my new PSU is 1 8-pin to a 2x 8-pin. I have searched the internet that using a direct 8-pin to 8-pin can remove/lessen the coil whine compared to a PCIe cable with a splitter due to power delivery on the power rail or some stuff. I am also planning to upgrade to an RTX 4070 which also uses just 1 8pin so I'm just curious if using a direct 1 to 1 cable is better than the one I have. I'm not knowledgeable on these things so I would like some insights. Thanks! Attached is my current PCIe cable for reference

My MSI A750GL (which is tier A speculative) have some noise when the PSU is plugged into the wall, regardless of whether or not the PSU switch is on or off. This noise is constant, and last forever as far as I can tell. It does not disappear after awhile. It only disappears when the psu is completely disconnected from the power. Once it’s plugged in again, the noise resume, regardless of the status of the pc/psu. The PSU seems to be working fine, with the static noise mentioned. The replacement unit still has the same issue. Does anyone else have this issue too? If anyone is interested in the noise: https://streamable.com/gf6an1

In the immediate vicinity of the cpu, I'm getting an electric sounding crackling noise. From afar, there's a high pitched whining noise. Neither noise is loud but the frequency of the tone is very annoying. In order to reduce the variables, I've replaced the AIO cooler with a passive cooler (Noctua NH-P1); removed the GPU, and set all of the case fans to 0 RPM. The 2 storage devices are NVME M.2 SSDs. Additionally, I'm not hearing any sound coming from the power supply. With my CPU at 65W TDP (via bios) and without a GPU, there is so little power needed that the Corsair RM1000x's fan isn't even running. Since I've taken all moving parts out of the equation, at this point, the only culprit I can think of is the motherboard. Any thoughts? Thanks! I built a new pc about two weeks ago and my PSU (corsair rm850e) when not under load has some crazy coil whine. It all goes away when I play something demanding. I had problems with this PSU before (last time I had to RMA it bc it had a ripped pin on the 24 pin motherboard connector (the 16th one)), so I want to not only RMA it, but to buy another PSU. Can you recommend me something good for about 200 $/€?

Hi guys. Recently I’ve built a pc with this configuration: Asus Prime b450-plus AMD Ryzen 5 3400g G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB 3200MHz ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB Cooler Master Masterwatt 750W Semi-Gold For a few days, I’ve been working on CPU and iGPU overclocking and pushed the gpu to 1700MHz and saw some weird green rectangles in games and very high temps. So I decided to buy a better cooler. I bought Deepcool gammaxx gt. I installed it and disabled cpu core performance in BIOS to reduce cpu core voltage. Since then, I’ve been hearing a coil whine in graphics demanding things like games and web scrolling using my Vega 11 integrated gpu which is measured 45 decibel at it’s peak and it’s coming from Heatsink’s base (CPU HS). I tried enabling core performance boost and it didn’t help. I also tried changing iGPU frequency and it didn’t help either. Since I have my pc next to my bed and I leave my pc rendering at nights, acoustics matter a lot to me and I’m thinking of changing the noisy part. My question is: 1. Can an integrated graphics cause coil whine? 2. Since it’s not coming from VRM or SoC voltage controllers, can it still come from beneath the cpu and socket and be a MOBO issue? 3. Can it be caused by the MOBO being bent because of the weight of my new cooler which is a lot heavier than the stock one? 4. Finally, which part do I have to change?

So new unit and I'm still within the return window. To try reduce the coil whine, I did a 7 hour looping benchmark in Dirt Rally everyday for the past week and a half which some says settles the coil whine. The noise has slightly improved, but nothing to say that it worked, maybe its psuedo, but idk. I have till October 28th btw if this is something I can continue to carry on to see/hear if the noise further reduces. I'm aware of undervolting, but I like to keep it at stock settings, and for the FPS limit, I had to turn it down all the way to 60FPS to notice an actual improvement after trying 144/120/100, but going from 170FPS to 60FPS on a 240Hz monitor is no bueno. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I can definitely say this is thankfully just a case in high FPS gaming because I tried every other GPU use case from rendering/viewport stuff in Blender, using Stable Diffusion/Photoshop and the likes with no coil whine. As such since I game with headphones on anyways, should I brush this off or get a replacement GPU if this is an unlikely case, or even more try another dual fan RTX 4070 that's more likely to not have coil whine?

So i got into overclocking like 2 months ago, and i tweaked my GPU and tested very long till it was stable on +200 core & +1000 mem. Today i wanted to do Tomb Raider benchmark, and all of a sudden the GPU started whining... At first i thought it was a case fan but its definetly the GPU. I set everything back to default, ran a AIDA64 GPU stress test, and the whining was not there anymore, or not audible atleast. When i loaded into tomb raider tho it started whining again, same for RE4. So its only when ingame for some reason, and not when doing a stress test. How is this possible? Did i damage my card?

Hi guys, I just did my first build and I had terrible coil whine. It was hard to pinpoint so I ended up changing the GPU. After changing the coil whine was still there. It got better but this is probably because the gpu is less power hungry. I then ended up switching PSUs and still the coil whine is there. I feel like I´m at a dead end. I suppose that then the coil whine must come somewhere from the motherboard, but I would rather avoid changing this as well. Is there anything you guys think I could do? Thanks for the advice in advance

I've had my new PC for about 3-4 weeks in total now, but occasionally I've heard some sort of strange sounds from it. The first time was when I was playing The Witcher 3 and it sounded like a fan was making the noise, and I stopped one of the front fans and it seemed to seize. But it came back a few days ago and sounds something like this: Weird case fan sound 1.m4a Weird case fan sound 2.m4a It goes away on it's own after a while though. I'm using a Fractal Design North case with the stock Aspect 140mm fans, and they seem to always sound like this but at a lower volume(audible when I put my ear next to them): Regular case fan sound.m4a I don't have any other North case or Aspect 140mm's to reference, so I'm not sure if this is normal? The second one I noticed was from the GPU(MSI Suprim X 4080) when I was in the menu for Hitman 3, I opened up the side panel and it sounded like this(the mic is under the GPU fans at the start and end): Coil whine open panel.m4a It disappears as soon as I load a level or quit the game. I guess that's coil whine? Never heard it before irl though. And it sounds like this when I'm in Witcher 3(recorded from the GPU I/O panel): Buzzing from back of PC.m4a But this one seems to go away when the fans stop, but it's still a weird buzzing sound that doesn't sound like the coil whine in Hitman 3?

(I have posted this on Reddit's TechSupport sub, but I thought here could be a good place too! So this is basically just copypasted from there lmao. Also sorry for phatt text) My audio setup right now consists of:- PC (Voicemeeter) --> Aorus X570 Elite (built-in soundchip, rear line out) --> 3.5mm-to-RCA --> Yamaha R-N602 --> Bookshelf speakers/headphones -- also MSI RTX 2070Super, fwiw Now, it's harder to notice when listening through speakers, but when plugging headphones into the reciever and listening to the PC's output, there is an audible whine. What I eventually noticed, is that whenever something happens on the PC screen, whenever content being displayed changes - I scroll a window, I move the cursor, I hover over a link and the displayed pixels change - there is a buzzing sound on top of the whine. This extra interference only happens whenever something happens on screen. Which leads me to believe they are linked.I have heard that sometimes, motherboard soundchips can get intereference from the video card ? Which in this case would make sense as the interference is worse when things are happening on-screen, i.e, the graphics card. So, on the rear of the Yamaha receiver, there are the RCA inputs. I have a turntable plugged into the PHONO, and my PC's 3.5mm to RCA plugged into Line 1 (I mentioned this because the sound is also audible when switching to the Phono output on the reciever, almost like all the RCA ports are linked. Other types of output are not affected). So I am wondering, what can I do about this? I am using an external receiver, so it seems like the problem is occuring before the sound is even leaving my PC. So this issue would also carry over into other DACs and Amps right? How do I prevent it? EDIT IN RESPONSE TO A COMMENT:- I've done a little more looking round, and I seem to have found a thing called 'coil whine'? Which seems to be the term for the interference from the electronic components, especially between the GPU + motherboard. Most sources say the big annoying thing about coil whine is that it's audible THROUGH the PC case from the components. I don't notice that as much due to ambient sounds etc. So it seems like this coil whine is 'leaking' into the audio signal ? Another thing with coil whine was, people said it is noticible at high FPS. My monitor is 165Hz. So I did a little test, and I dropped the refresh rate to 60Hz, and I noticed that the whine I was hearing changed. It was still there, but almost like its frequency changed. I could almost hear dicrete buzzes, where once the refresh rate was raised to 165 again, these discrete 'buzzes' merged into one sound, due to the increasing frequency(?). If that makes sense? So just another pointer that this looks like what I am dealing with. I dug out and plugged in this little USB PnP sound device. I thought this would be a step in the right direction, since the output is being moved away from the noisy components, but the whine was still audible when connecting my 3.5mm-to-RCA into the USB device, and the RCA end into Line 1 of my reciever. I tried both front and rear USB ports, with the whine in all of them. I'm just thinking of options, and which ones would work. I don't know the quality of that USB sound dongle lol, so perhaps a ~new cheapo USB sound card --> reciever~ would be okay? Or those ferrite cable clips? (I do actually have an interface for my XLR microphone! But I only ever use the microphone for things like Discord calls etc, rather than recording so I never actually get to hear if any whine is present in that lol (however never had any complaints), and I have noticed that my mic interface's USB cable has one of those built in, perhaps controlling the whine of my mic input..?) I was thinking of getting a decent desktop USB DAC, but I don't want to spend on one of those if this whine will just carry on over into that too..!!

I recently got a new motherboard, the Gigabyte Z790 UD AC, and I am hearing a fairly annoying amount of coil whine. It goes in and out making it worse than just a constant noise. I was hoping the Acoustic Noise Mitigation setting in my bios could help but there are 2 slew rate settings and I want to know what they do before I enable anything. They both go from 2x-16x. If anyone can inform me that would be great.

Upgraded to a MSI 3080 yesterday, the three fan version. After playing for a little while I noticed under load a very noticeable coil whine... like louder than a bee in your ear. I thought it was a cable contacting a fan because I had to run new cables etc but no none are making contact with the fans. I can manually adjust the fan speed of the GPU in MSI afterburner... Under <90% RPM its fine... As soon as it goes above that I get the coil whine start at around 92% and gets worse as it gets closer to max. Has anyone had this kind of issue? Is it a problem and does it subside on its own?

Hi there. Here's the situation: from the past few weeks a hissing sound is coming from my PC. I opened my pc and tried to figure out the source but I can't find it. It makes when something is loading. Like when I open the chrome, file explorer, during the game loading screen. Suppose I open the chrome and open youtube. The sound will come during the site loading. As soon as I'm in the site it stops. Then sometimes in between it happens again. I cannot figure out the reason for this. I removed my Hard drive and just turn on my PC with only SSD which has OS installed but it was still coming so I don't think my hard drive is making it. I stopped all fans and checked but still it was coming. So I don't think any of the fans are the cause either. Please suggest what to do. Here's my system: Ryzen 3 3100 MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX Corsair CX 550W GTX 750 TI Thanks.

So this has been occurring for a few days by now, and it would happen on/off for about 20 minutes interval. The noise is consistent and doesn't pitch up/down corresponding to what's on display which is something I've read in regards to coil whine from the GPU. So which part is it then? Got a video here with the noise, for comparison I've put it to sleep mode and back on. Specs: AMD Ryzen 7 1800x (3.6GHz) MSI B350 PC Mate Cooler Master Hyper 212 Led Turbo Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 32GB DDR4 (2x16GB) 3200MHz XFX RX 480 8GB Black Edition 500GB - Western Digital WDC WDS500G2B0B-00YS70 (M.2 SSD) 120GB - KingDian S280 (SSD) 2TB - Seagate ST2000DM001-1ER164 (7200RPM HDD) 1TB - Western Digital WDC WD10EZRX-00A8LB0 (7200RPM HDD) 500GB - TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050 (5400RPM HDD) 1TB - WD_BLACK SN750 Corsair 850W TX850M (Old yellow sticker version) NZXT H440 Overall most parts were bought when released such as the RX 480, B350 Mobo from 2016, the TX850M was used so I don't know how old it exactly is, but for the most part a 4-5 year old PC with the only changes being storage. This high pitched noise never occurred before so I'm guessing its just the capacitors wearing out by age. 1311410114_HighPitchNoiseinPC.mp4

Hey All, I am having same problem with a number of GPUs in my PC, below my specification: Windows 10 (64 bit) Motherboard bios F14 (newest) Ryzen 5600X Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite 1.0 16 GB Viper Steel 3733 CL17 PSU 600 W Bronze SilentiumPC Vero M2 (local brand in Poland but good quality) 2 NVME SSD 2TB PNY CS3040 and 1TB Kingston A2000 GPUs I have tried: 3 versions of 6600XT (Gigabyte, Powercolor, XFX) 3060 from Asus, Powercolor 6700XT Always newest drivers PC is running great without any problems but the noise is just unbearable. Difficult to register with my phone but if you listen on 100% volume you will definitely hear this. Under full load there is a strange buzzing noise coming from the gpu area. After trying 5 different GPUs I am pretty sure the issue is not on this side. I used to have RX 570 4GB on this setup and it was silent. Of course it had coil whine but only above 300 frames and on stock voltage. My display is a 75hz so limitng FPS and undervolting allowed me to make it completely silent even under full load. I tried the same with new cards but it didn't work. I tried another PSU this time 550W Gold (with 6600XT so enough power) same problem. PSU was tested by me and later by PC service and it is running great (all voltages idle/load are correct) They even tested it with 1080Ti and supposedly there was no noise. It seems strange that older GPUs would work fine. I limited all cards to PCIe 3.0 - didn't work. Disconnected 4.0 SSD - didn't work. Replaced Motherboard battery - didn't work. I am thinking Motherboard VRM or something like that. When in idle there is a similar noise near the cpu but much less intensive. You need to listen carefully. When CPU is under some strees this one disappears. Regarding the video from 0:06 to 1:00 I am running Unigine Heaven 4.0. You will notice the change of noise after 1:00. Then in the benchmark there are credits and for 4 seconds fps goes very high and you can hear classic coil whine. That I could accept but this buzzing noise is killing me I would really appreciate your help and ideas Thank you

Merry Christmas to all, I recently bought an XPG CORE REACTOR 650W and I noticed something yesterday and that is that when the pc is idle, it starts making electrical noises barely audible only if you place your ear a few centimeters away from the grill.i have already tested with cpu and gpu stress test simultaneously and no sound is produced, even when i am just surfing i can't hear anything. i found this video and the sound is very similar and just as arithmic (only in my case i think it is a little less noisy). I need to know if it is something normal or if it can be dangerous. VID-20210101-WA0000.mp4.12d531738967822c1bde5baf1e69d5df.mp4
