  1. Hello everyone, this is my first post and I will try to present my problem as good as I can. My Specs: Intel i7 7700k @4,6/4,8 Ghz // 1,25/1,3V NZXT Kraken X72 Push/Pull 32Gb G.Skill RipJaws V @ 3200Mhz // 1,353V MSI Geforce Gtx 1060 Gaming X 6Gb Asus ROG Strix Z270E Gaming 500Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro 500Gb Samsung 850 Evo 256Gb Samsung 850 Evo 4Tb Seagate Barracuda 650 Watt be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 Creative Soundblaster Z Corsair Crystal 570X Fans: 1x Corsair LL120 @ the back of the case 2x Corsair LL120 @ the top of the case 3x Corsair LL120 @ the front of the case, pushing air into the radiator 3x NZXT Aer P120 behind the radiator, pulling air out of the radiator The air is getting pulled from the front, through the radiator and the top and is getting exhausted out of the back. So my main problem is about thermals and how they interact with my fan speed. I can only run aida64 or prime95 @4,2Ghz all the time without a boost clock if I want the temps to stay lower than 80°C or if I want prime95 to work at all. I wanted to overclock my i7 to at least 4,8Ghz, but I'm getting temps of 100°C max on all cores after running aida64 for a few minutes. I can't even use prime95 because it always gives out that a Fatal Error has occured where a 0,4 was expected, but a 0,5 or someting came out. I just don't understand why. I tried paying around with the CPU voltage settings, but it didn't change anything. After I saw this high temps I decided to reduce the clockspeed to 4,6 Ghz at 1,25 Volts but the temps were still above 90°C max at all cores. A small improvent, but not enough. There's actually a pretty big difference between the temps shown by NZXT CAM and HWMonitor. I use both at the same time and the difference is more than 10°C sometimes. Could it be some sort of sensor problem? Now the strangest thing: It almost doesnt't matter at all at which fan speeds I run my system. When I stress tested my CPU with Aida64 at around 40% fan speed and at 100% fan speed, the results were more or less the same. I also ran a Cinebench R20 Benchmark and got a Singecore score of 489 and a Multicore score of 2419 with about 40% fan speed. But when I ran the same test with 100% fan speed both scores were a little bit worse instead of getting better. I don't get it. EDIT: I tried monitoring everything with AiSuite from Asus as well and the highest recorded cpu temps are about 73°C and there are no big spikes recorded as with HWMonitor or Aida64. Now I´m even more confused because the temperature difference between 2 programms is almost 15-20°C. Which is the real temperature now??? I´m just confused.
  2. I built a Plex server a couple years ago from my old gaming PC's internals (only one x16 slot) and I need to add a second HBA for another 16 drives, but all the MBs I'm finding with 2 x16 slots will only operate in x8/x4 mode when both are populated (each HBA needs 8 lanes). Someone at r/datahoarder did direct me to a workstation board that will work, the Supermicro X11SAT, but it's like $300 minimum on eBay. I was finding plenty of used 7th gen boards for around $50, though like I said none with the x8/x8 support I need, I just need to know which model # to search for. I'm really hoping to just find a gaming MB that will suit my needs since I don't need ECC support anyway (though yes I know I should for my current use case but I'm trying to save money). Actually it can be gaming or workstation, as long as I can find it relatively cheap used or new. Would really appreciate any help.
  3. Hey all, I seem to be out of luck with any attempt with an XMP overclock and I'd like to talk about a solution. The Problem For any attempted XMP overclock, my PC will sustain power (including all lighting, fans (default to full RPM), and the water pump) but it will not POST. It will hang with a black screen. Attempts to reboot warm will give the same result, while cold reboot achieves POST with the option for F1 Setup to BIOS. Please also note: A stable non-XMP CPU overclock past 5.0 GHz can be achieved. Specs Motherboard: Asus Prime Z270-AR CPU: i7-7700K (stock settings for XMP testing, Voltage at AUTO, stock Multiplier) RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4x8GB 3200 MHz Previous XMP Attempts CPU: - I've kept the CPU at stock settings for the XMP profile. RAM (with stock timings ) : - 3200MHz / @3.502 Volts - 3200MHz / @Auto Voltage - 3000MHz / @3.502 Volts - 3000MHz / @Auto Voltage Please let me know what you think! If you have a solution, questions, or suggestions, fire away! I will provide more information upon request (I wasn't sure what else is needed). Thanks as always!
  4. Hey everyone, I cracked open my already de-lidded 7700k to re apply thermal compound since it has been a few years since I originally delidded and I am regretting it. My mistake was using a teeny tiny bit of super glue to adhere the heat spreader back on. When I popped the head spreader off for the second time (just now) i noticed 2 very tiny points of exposed copper ish color on the PCB. I cleaned everything up as best I could, re-applied thermal compound, and prayed for the best. My computer can only function with single channel memory (16gb. 2X 8gb dimms) in slots B1 and B2 of my asus strix z270e motherboard. I'm an idiot and feel so dumb for putting super glue on my cpu to adhere the heat spreader. i should have just let the clamps hold it down. I tested all of my RAM in all slots. All of the dims are healthy, it's only slots A1 and A2 which are not working but i'm only assuming it's due to my CPU that i fucked up. The motherboard should still be healthy. So i need help deciding if i should look on ebay for a used 7700k or just go for a new cpu/motherboard and a 9700k or move to AMD (i'm open to both, and any suggestions). I bought my 7700k a few days before the 8k series came out and was screwed with socket compatibility on LGA 1151. Cost-wise it would make much more sense just to find a used 7700k and stick with my current platform but i'm quite tempted to go for something newer given how much advance there has been lately in the CPU market. Money isn't too much of an issue, I have a bit to spend and could upgrade to a new platform if I wanted. The other solution is simply just to ride out this CPU as long as i can with the missing memory slots running 16gb. i do not want to do this. i hate the idea of having a crippled system. there is also more potential for the CPU to completely fail and i hate the idea of losing any of my data as i have several hundred GB of photos and video on my computer. GPU is and 1080ti and i do quite a bit of gaming and a lot of photo/video editing w/ adobe products. Thank you in advance for any comments and help! I feel so dumb. I'm currently smoking to relax because i'm super upset :'(
  5. Please delete if not allowed. Need help figuring out what my pc is worth. I heard 30-50% of purchase price, but I upgraded over the years and can't remember what I bought each part for. Here's a list of parts. Thanks in advance! CPU: i7 7700k CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i PRO GPU:EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 8GB XC Ultra Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming M5 RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB Storage: WD Blue 1 TB 7200RPM HD / Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD Case: NZXT H440 PS: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold
  6. Hey all! I actually have many questions etc. I am relatively good with computers and have had several builds. I built this system about 4 years ago? Just after the release of the 7700k was released. I've always bought unlocked cpus as after a couple years I tend to oc them as high as possible before throwing the towel in and beginning the new system build. Now unfortunately I think I have a bad chip :( I simply can not get 5ghz and I'm stuck at 4.9ghz @1.375v which I feel is too high for that clock anyway, max load temps are around 65-71*C in prime 95 which is fine (I did delid the cpu). The question I have is there something I am missing? I can provide screen shots etc. Also if I can't get this thing to OC more should I upgrade? I'm currently sitting with 7700k, msi Z270 carbon pro, 32gb gskill ram 3200 ddr4(which I can use for the next build). Corsair h115i v2 and a zotac 1070 amp (I've been wanting to upgrade to the rtx 2080 as there are some super good deals where I live atm, the one store is selling them for less then a rtx 2070 super and from my understanding the rtx 2080 is a better card). Could my cpu be limited by my mobo? Will it bottleneck a 2080. I play games @1440p and I'm not happy with the 1070s performance. Thanks in advance!
  7. Hey guys, so I have a Asus Strix z270F with an i7 7700k , stock clocks. The mobo pushes around 1.33-1.34V into my CPU in high loads, which seems way excessive. I tried changing the core voltage in Bios and it doesn't save when booting to Windows. Tried setting the voltage to static, doesn't do anything either. It seems like any changes I make to the voltages in Bios just don't work. I have the latest Bios version. Am I missing any hidden setting that overrides everything I do?
  8. Hi All! I have a question about my PC build, I built this PC around 3 years ago. I am a Computer science student and so do a lot of coding, video editing, 3d modelling as well as gaming. My current build is as follows; Intel i7 7700k Overclocked to 4.6ghz Evo 220 cooler ASUS Z270-A motherboard Crucial ballistix sport ddr4 2400 single ram 16gb stick GTX 1060 Overclocked to max before stability issues Bronze 550W EVGA PSU Now my question is, I am looking to make some kind of upgrade to my PC before I end up completely rebuilding it to try to get as much power from the system as I can before a complete new build is completed. I dont want to sink to much money into this system unless its a part I will use on my new PC I will be building within the next year. What do you recommend I do to this system to increase the speed without spending much? My current opinion would be to upgrade the RAM to 3000mhz and get two 8gb sticks to take advantage of dual channel. I have also considered upgrading the cooler so I can OC my CPU further, or possibly even doing a delid on it to lower temps and get a higher clock speed. My question is, would I be best to increase the speed of the CPU by delidding it or would the performance be minimal with such a slow RAM and only using single channel, do you believe the ram could be bottle necking my CPU? Thanks for your help!
  9. Hi everyone, Alex here. I am wondering why even after 5 years 6700 and 7700 chips on amazon are still ~ 300+$?! For such money you can get a top ryzen cpu.
  10. Hi Everyone! I have an i7 7700K and I plan on just keeping it at stock and not overclocking it. I usually just web browse and paly games, such as BFV and the likes. I currently have an H115i but the pump died (idle temps 50-60 celcius, and gaming pinned at 90) so now I've RMA'ed it and plan on buying a new cooler and considering air coolers. Now I'm wondering which one I should buy, any suggestions as which one is best for my needs? I have a Lian-Li Lancool ii case and a maximus ix mobo thanks in advance!
  11. Hey, i recently started overclocking my system which has an I7 7700K on Asus Maximus VIII Hero. I managed to oc my cpu to 4.8GHz on all cores without additional voltage. How much volts are ok for this CPU and how far should i be able to push it? I cool it with an corsair 115i Platinum RGB Thy for your answers
  12. Hey, I've had an i7 7700k for a while running on an Asus TUF Z270 MK1 and with an NZXT Kraken X62 AIO. With the fans at 80% (corsair LL140's) in a push pull configuration, i reach temps of 70 - 80. They never dip below 70 but never go higher than 78. I'm going to upgrade my chassis to a higher airflow one (probably the 680X Crystal series) but I wanna know if these are safe temps. I understand that this chip is known to get hot but I wanna know if I should dial back my 4.6 on all cores OC back to the stock frequency or if it's safe to keep it like this. Thanks!
  13. I got a 7700k to replace my 6600k and used my old Corsair h100 that's now a few years old. Initially I had issues with my 7700k hitting high 90s under load but now I transported it for the winter break and now it hits 100C at idle. My 6600k would overclock at like 70C. I assume it's my cooler but I don't know if my cooler went bad or I've had a mounting pressure issue the whole time. Does this look like proper mounting pressure? Thanks for the help.
  14. Hello everyone, Lately I've been asking myself a lot of questions related to the performance of my PC in this forum. Cinebench low scores, CrystalDisk low scores, Fake RAMs, etc etc. So, I've decided to use this day to do some benchmarking... On Windows 7. Why? Because I also wanted to know if Windows 7 works well if Kaby Lake and NVME. It does. Test #1: My PC was getting low scores (890, 850) on cinebench, I thought it was due to my low voltages. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1115728-psu-dying No it was not: Test #2: Fake Ram? Checking its stability? https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1102369-did-i-buy-fake-ram-stick/ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1115625-checking-ram-stability/ Results: memtest+ for an entire night, P95 for an entire night as well... Results? Everything is fine. Even if it's fake, it does behave like one. No prints this time. Test #3: My NVMe Drive was getting low scores on CD6. Decided to install windows 7 on my old Sata SSD and test the m2 device when it's not running windows: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1117379-samsung-nvme-500gb-970-evo-plus-benchmarks/ Results: Everything fine for a z270 chipset. Honestly, I don't know why I'm posting this here. I just wanted to share with you guys what happened. If you have any questions please let me know.
  15. So i've had my corsair carbide 200r but I plan on getting a new cpu cooler for my 7700k (and eventually upgrade the cpu to something else later this year). Would I have any problems fitting any of the water coolers in here and are any especially bad? I currently have a 212 evo but my cpu usually gets to hot for some games like AC Odessey or ghost recon breakpoint. Especially when streaming Full computer specs should be in signature or you can ask me and i'll update it.
  16. I recently got my hand on some second hand hardware. As you have probably read from the title already, I am experiencing some strange behavior... Specs are as follows: Intel Core i7 7700K Asus Strix Z270H Gaming/K1 1151 Asus ROG Strix 1070 Ti Samsung 850 EVO 500GB Seagate Barracuda 1TB Corsair TX650W Cryorig H5 Ultimate CPU cooler Corsair Vengeance ddr4 2x8gb 2666MHz All of the components are used. I first built the computer on top of a cardboard box to troubleshoot. Standard procedure. I was having trouble reaching BIOS but this was quickly resolved by simply reseating the ram. After this I was able to go into the UEFI and validate that all of the connected hardware was recognized. Cool. I then tried to install Windows but the installation process was continuously interrupted resulting in a corrupt install each time. This was when I first raised an eyebrow. In order to further troubleshoot I connected another SSD which had Windows previously installed. I load into Windows and I blue screen almost immediately. I tried rebooting a few times but would always crash either before loading in or shortly thereafter. Needless to say I tried resetting BIOS multiple times in order to resolve this, making sure the settings stuck. It would not work. I cleared CMOS, updated BIOS to the latest version, swapped both RAM and power supply. Nothing helped. I then tried tweaking some settings manually: I underclocked the processor to 3 GHz (all core) and set the voltage to a fixed 1.2V. This worked. It didn't crash in Windows and it managed to pass stress tests such as Aida64. After this I raised the clocks to 4.2 GHz keeping the voltage the same. This also worked. I then increased the clocks to around 4.7 GHz, still using 1.2V, and that also worked - much to my surprise. After pushing my "luck" for a while I eventually reached something unstable which resulted in a BSOD. "No big deal" I thought, but lowering the clocks back to 4.5 GHz (stable just a few minutes ago) resulted in constant blue screens again. WHAT? ? I started over with an underclock -> "stock-clock" -> overclock (@ 1.2V) which brought me back to where I were. Although the behavior was weird, I decided to build the computer properly into a case ( Corsair Carbide SPEC-DELTA). Around this time I also decided to delid my 7700K in order to exclude temperature as a variable and I also installed Windows on the 850 EVO mentioned above to avoid potential driver clashes. I tuned a few more settings manually in BIOS such as Cache frequency (among others) in hope of making things more stable - and for a while - it really was stable. I even managed to hit 5 GHz (!) at a reasonable voltage: ~1.3V. I had some seemingly random crashes throughout which made me dial it back down to 4.7 GHz 1.2V and I found that to be stable for almost 5 days. I was really happy (although confused) and I used the machine daily for both games and web browsing. **Keep in mind that throughout this entire troubleshoot I had been trying to use stock settings and it NEVER worked** Unfortunately it started crashing again... And now I can't reach 4.7 GHz anymore. I can't even reach 4.2 GHz. Stock settings or "optimized defaults" still also don't work. The only thing working at this moment is a substantial (handicapping) underclock such as 3 GHz. **Has anyone ever experienced something similar??? I don't have another compatible motherboard or CPU to properly troubleshoot further. You guys are my only hope! Any input is appreciated!
  17. Hi Guys, I really appreciate this community and would be grateful for all your help. My Gigabyte Aorus GA-z270x Gaming K7 motherboard just died on me while tinkering with OC with Intel overclock utility ? on i7-7700k. It basically goes into boot-loop after BIOS initialization. I am able to get into bios and re-flashed a bunch of times. last code on LED is A2 which means "Detect and install all currently connected IDE devices"(as per http://forum.gigabyte.us/post/1867/thread ) I am in a bit of a predicament as: - Should I spend on shipping for RMA the board? - I live in Toronto, Canada and sending the board to Gigabyte California costs about $50 (yes we have to pay for one way shipping and customs etc. even with warranty) Also I will have downtime of about a month in the whole process. which makes me wonder about the next option - Should I buy another board and spend money there? - please suggest some boards, as I am unable to find stuff below $200-$300 which makes me think about the next point? - Should I look towards new Ryzen series and buy CPU+MoBo? - would I be able to get some money for my i7-7700k on ebay or Kijiji? I manly use the computer for Lightroom CC, Photoshop, Premiere Pro. and very light gaming just to relax CS: GO and DOTA 2. Also, the other parts of my current build that I plan to keep using are: - NZXT - Kraken X52 Liquid CPU Cooler - (G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory) X 2 = 32GB - Samsung - 960 Pro 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive - EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB FTW3 ELITE GAMING WHITE Video Card - Corsair - Crystal 570X ATX Mid Tower Case - Corsair - 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply Please help!!! Cheers! -tech__geek
  18. Today I switched my CPU from a 6600K to a 7700K on a Asus Z170 Pro G MB. On my 6600K I had an overclock to 4.4.ghz done by AI Suite. Now that I installed my 7700K the option to overclock disappeared from AI Suite, so I uninstalled AI Suite (from registery too, using a guide) but the clocks are still at 4.4ghz. I tried overclocking from the bios (like I should) but AI Suite seems to still override it even though its completely deleted. No matter what I do it still stays at 4.4ghz. Reformatting is my last solution. Any idea what should I do?
  19. Hello. I recently got a new PC, bought an i7-7700k and a Asus Maximus IX Formula second hand, got some cheap RAM from the local store and reused my old PSU (Corsair RM750 750 watts) and SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 250Gb). I also moved my Asus ROG Strix 1080 from my old rigg to my new one... Right of the bat i noticed that something was wrong though, as i got a lot (A LOT) of micro stutter all the time. Playing a Youtube video is unbearable as it laggs super much and everything just becomes a blur and the whole computer locks up on and off (It got even worse when i installed the programs provided with the motherboard, apparently something with the IOMap64.sys files screwed the computer up completely as it ALLWAYS caused a BSOD upon boot & logg on. I got rid of the BSOD problem by deleting all those files). So i thought "Well there is a chance i damaged the GPU when i handled it", so i swapped it out for my old AMD XFX R7800 Series card. What happened? Everything works fine. So then i swapped in the 1080 in to my old rigg. And guess what? Everything works fine on that machine. No problems, no crashes, no hick ups, no nothing goes wrong. The only negative thing is that the GPU gets bottlenecked HARD by the CPU. So there shouldn't be a problem with the Maximus IX Formula, since it handles the AMD card great, right? And there shouldn't be a problem on the GPU side as the 1080 works fine in the old rigg, right? What's the problem then? I've tried everything. I've reseated the GPU, I've cleared the CMOS, I've done a reset on the BIOS settings, reinstalled Windows multiple times, I've jump started another PSU to use that as a GPU-only power source to eliminate a bad PSU issue, I've uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers... The only time the computer works (no laggs, no micro stutter or anything) is when i run it in Safe Mode. So is there a chance there is something software related causing the problems? PLEASE help me figure this out, i just burnt a lot of money (a lot by my standards) on a new computer and i can't even use it. Does anyone have experience with a problem like this? 20. Hi everyone, I have been running a unraid setup on my old computer, mostly as a media server but also to host minecraft. While it runs generally well, the hardware sometimes chokes with big movie files and cannot be upgraded more (Q8200+4gb RAM.) I am thinking about installing unraid on my gaming setup and use a VM for my day-today Win10 use. I am not sure though if my setup is powerful enough to split between unraid and the VM. I'd want to still have everything running smoothly when gaming and see an improvement with Plex streaming. I am mostly worried about my amount of RAM and my number of cores once split. Please let me know what you think, here is my current setup: Asrock Z270 Pro4 7700K not OC'ed yet 16GB ram (2x8gb) 1060 6gb If this is possible I will probably setup the old pc to run pfsense. Thanks for your input!
  21. Im looking to upgrade my CPU from my current 4690k to something a bit more powerful and i wanted some input. I'll be playing and streaming games like BF1, overwatch, and probably do some light editing for youtube. I'm not sure whether to go with the Z170 chipset and a 6700k, or the x99 chipset and a 6800k, or wait for kaby lake processors in 2017. Thanks for any support on this.
  22. PC Specs: CPU: i7-7700k GPU: GTX 1070 ROG Strix MOBO: GA-Z270X-Gaming 7 MEM: G.Skill TridentZ 16GB DDR4-3200 STORAGE: 2TB, 7200rpm and 256GB M.2 COOLING: Corsair H115i PSU: Corsair 860W 80+ Platinum Note: None of the parts has ever been overclocked. PCPartPicker --> https://pcpartpicker.com/user/AdlerAdemov/saved/sNpLkL Long story short --> It worked like charm in the past few months (and even yesterday night) but when I woke up this morning and turned on the system, it IMMEDIATELY went on full blast. Instantly. All the fans (except the ones on the GPU) were spinning at their highest speed (I have never set the GPU, CPU or any of the fans to work on some "pro" or "performance" mode. I've always used the 'normal' setting). And for everybody's surprise - this happened even before the Windows boot! Meaning that its not some mining bot or something like that. Its pure hardware. When I've build the PC last summer, I've noticed some odd behavior of the CPU speed and load in the Task Manager, compared to the ones in the Corsair LINK. But lets cut the crap and let me show you what's going on. This is the what the Task Manager on my Dell Inspiron 5721 shows: The load is at 6% and it uses 0.93GHz of the total 2.4GHz base speed. Nothing strange, right? and now... That's the Task Manager of my PC: Its 1% load on 4.49GHz speed at base 4.20GHz. Is this normal? But wait, there's more... This is the Corsair LINK software The TaskManager says 5% load on 4,20GHz from maximum 4,20GHz, and then... on the Corsair LINK software, all 4 cores are at ~100°C with 22% load and obviously that's the reason why the fans are spinning so fast, trying to cool down the system. Two questions: 1. What's causing the 100% CPU load even before booting Windows? 2. Why the TaskManager shows 4,49GHz out of 4,20GHz max? (Not a single app launched, even background(startup) apps were turned off) Note_1: I have never overclocked any of the parts I have. Note_2: When I've build my system, I used the stock thermal paste applied on the H115i. Although I think I know what most people are going to say (to change the thermal paste), please, please, please consider this: Literally yesterday was working like a charm at 30-40 [°C]. Anykind of help, judge, critic, jpkes or even compliments will be well appreciated. Thanks!

  24. Alright so I bet this question has been asked a million times but for gaming, music production, streaming, and when recording games is it better to use a 8700k or a 7700k? Im supposed to build a pc when black Friday starts as the sales will help me a lot.(budget 2000) Also I need this question answered as I've seen yes and no from a whole bunch of forums BUT Can you use a 8700k on a z270 board with all the features it would have as if you used a z370 motherboard or do you need a z370 board to use a 8700k?
  25. Hi all, Firstly, I am in the UK and am working with £GBP. My PC: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/XG4hVY I was just wondering if there is anything that sticks out to anyone that might need to be upgraded or that should be changed? I like to play a variety of different games such as PUBG, Destiny 2, COD: WW2, GTA V, CMS2018 etc. I am currently being able to play these games in 1080p quite well however my GPU always gets quite hot, however im reluctant to upgrade to a better GPU as the prices are so high at the moment due to Cryptocurrency. Any help would be hugely appriciated.
