  1. Im new to overclocking and decided after a while to try and overclock my 5960x, I know its an older CPU but im trying to get the most out of it for now. Ive enabled the XMP profile on my G.Skills Ram to push it upto 2800mhz from the stock, this changed the BLCK Frequency to 127.3 and i've set all cores to what I thought was a modest 33, so effectively 4.2ghz according to the BIOS. Occasionally it looks like my 64gb of ram does not pick up and goes down to 48gb for whatever reason, I read somewhere turning up DRAM voltage sometimes helps which is what I did but its a bit flaky (put it up to 1.3v). Ive left everything else at Auto. Ive taken a few screenshots of my BIOS and my computer in windows at idle and just using the CPUID stress test and it seems like the temperatures are very high even at idle, this is with the AIO on Extreme (it cant get any higher/louder than it is). My room tempreture generally sits at around 20 degrees celsius. Sorry for the long winded thread, any help would be appreciated. Thanks! 2. Forgot to add my ideal price will be around $1,500 prefer 1000 dollars or less for the CPU and motherboard total as I will be reason the RAM and storage and my case which is a be quiet pure base 600 in my current PSU is the EVGA 1300 watt 80+ gold ratedthought I had to get for my r925 X2 graphics card back in 2014 LOL because they needed like 30 amp 12 volt rails LOL Considering upgrading my whole entire system from a 5960x with 16 gigs of ddr4 memory rate of speed 2133 megahertz which I can overclock 2400 megahertz and I'll be reusing the storage the nvme drive and the 3x10 terabyte hard drives I would like to keep Intel as my main choice for processor as my hard drive setup is on a raid 5 on an rst controller also next requirement I would need is to make sure it has at least 40 PCI lanes because I have a 16x graphics card that I will reuse for now in a few 1X pci-e cards I don't personally know from knowledge if onboard Wi-Fi and USB 3 count towards PCI Lanes or not but I wouldn't mind buying a cheaper motherboard does not have it but chances are if the system is going to be x299 imma have to buy a mid-range to high and motherboard that's probably going to have it but I would at least like 24 pcie Lanes at the minimum
  3. So, I'm kind of a rookie when it comes to ocing my rig, but it's more of a necessity because my GPU is screwed up, and I need to improve my render time on Blender and other softwares I use. I'm running the cpu at 4.5ghz 1.3v, left the uncore ratio on auto to change it later, didn't notice any instability in Aida64, but when I run any benchmark like cinebench, the results drops awfully bad. At first, on 3.0ghz it gave me 1809 points on cinebench, after OC at 4.5 I got only 800ish points. Can anyone give me a hand on it? my setup i7 5960x Gigabyte GA-X99 gaming g1 16gb ram GTX 660 ti 3gb
  4. Greetings my good friends! I have a question regarding overclocking. I do own an Intel i7 5960X and I am overclocking it. It's running great but I would like to have some advice from OC specialists. I am overclocking my processor at 4.5 GHz with the voltage being automatically regulated. I'm using AIRCOOLING (Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3) The temps are (in Celsius) - Approximately 32 when room is cold, 45 when it's warm 45 when gaming (BF1 Ultra 1080p), 55 when it's warm. 60 rendering (1080p60 FPS from fraps master file to 40 mbits bitrate) - 70 when it's warm Streaming temps are about the same (while playing a game on top of it of course). Here are the details of the processor and temps / core "live": http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2017/01/1483899429-untitled.png Here is my full PC Build: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2017/01/1483899771-2.png OS: Windows 10 Pro - 64 Bits Thank you by advance for your help! Happy new year Chibibowa
  5. Are Ryzen 1800x/1800 worth it over 5960x(box pack/New) and asus rampage 5 extreme combo(used) both for 570$ from a friend who is selling it? I'll be using the PC for gaming, photo/video editing.
  6. Everyone, this thread was created for anyone concerned about potential bottlenecks between components. Post any processor, ram, motherboard, video card combo and let's discuss optimal, NOT compatible! For instance, I don't care what motherboards my processor, ram, gpu is compatible with if the full potential of these components are not available through this motherboard. Why drop serious coin on one component if this component is fractionalized or bottlenecked by another component. The inspiration for this thread is inspired by the below...which i still don't have good any motherboard choices. Any other bottleneck concerns are welcome in this thread. Original question: best motherboard for 5930k? I was looking at pulling the trigger on MSI x99 sli Krait board. to match up with i7 5930k processor. Now this got me thinking that I don't want to create a bottleneck. Just because a board is compatible doesn't mean it's optimal...correct? I don't need a lot of extras I just want to maximize the 5930k processor and also want to be compatible if i decide to upgrade to 5960x later...but i'm on a budget now. Are there any more affordable boards that won't create the bottleneck your referring to above and are still excellent boards?. Thanks!!!!!
  7. I found a problem with EVGA 980ti Classified's ! It seems they do not support x16/x16 PCI-E bandwidth on the EVGA X-99 Classified motherboard even though the board is suppose to support x16/x16. This is a problem with both the 5930K and the 5960X which both have 40 PCI-E lanes. I have not been able to test it on any other motherboards. Below is my original post on the EVGA forums and here is a link to the thread http://forums.evga.com/980ti-Classified-2way-SLi-PCIE-lane-issues-X99-Classified-MB-NO-x16x16-m2399449.aspx I am hoping somebody here can help figure this out or that the Linus Media Group could talk about this in a video or on the Wan Show. System info : EVGA X99 Classified E-ATX motherboard Intel 5930k custom water loop 16gb G. Skill 2666 DDR4 RAM EVGA SuperNova P2 1000w power supply 2x EVGA 980ti Classified I installed 2x EVGA 980ti Classified GPU's a few weeks ago. They are installed in slots 1 and 4 EVGA's product manual says these are the proper slots for 2way SLI on this board and they should be x16/x16 with the 40 PCI-E lanes from the 5930K. I have the extra 6 pin power plugged into the motherboard for the PCI-E slots. For some reason slot 1 is reading 3.0 x16 but slot 4 is reading 3.0 x8. Why is slot 4 x8 and not x16 like it is suppose to be?? Is it that the GPU just can't use the bandwidth ? I tried pushing the cards with Heaven benchmark, 3d Mark, Furmark and it stayed at x8. I have tried disabling the other PCI-E slots. I have both the m.2 slots disabled. I have no other hardware in any other PCI-E slots. I also noticed that in the Nvidia LED configurator that the card in slot 4 is reconized as card 1. I am not sure if thats normal or just a bug in the software. When I had my 780ti's in they always read x16 on both slots. I just can't wrap my head around this. I know there is no real performance gains from x8 to x16, but I bought the 5930k specifically because it had 40 PCI-E lanes. I would like to be able to use the lanes and hardware as stated in the product specifications. If anyone else can confirm this with a similar set up please do so. Any help or input would be appreciated!!! I can post any pictures or info needed.
  8. As we all know, most games don't run well on multicore CPUs, because they are optimized for Y2K hardware (wtf?) Could you be as kind as to post some games that are known to be well optimized for multicore CPUs like 5960x and so on? I'd love to try them.
  9. A friend of mine bought a new beast rig today to replace his old one. He got a 5960X with Gigabyte X99 Gaming 5 Mobo, 4x4GB DDR4 RAM from Crucial, Corsair RM 1000W PSU, and a Cooler Master Eisberg 240L CPU Cooler AiO. It took him around a day to get it done in his good old CM HAF X (942) and he finally got to start it. But it didn't start. The motherboard light up and starts to produce short beeps indefinetly. A quick Google search showed that this means "Power Failure". The first thing that came to my mind is that he might have connected the modular cables of the PSU the wrong way. So he tried with his old non-modular PSU where it is pretty much impossible to mismatch the connectors, but the board still wouldn't boot. He is going to return it for repairs tomorrow. Until then thou, do you guys have any suggestions? I don't have much experience with GB mobos. I have used Asus my whole life and no plans to change - never had problems with Asus mobos. I don't have a picture of the build. Sorry
  10. I have enormous respect to Linus and his group of wonderful tech and video editors I need some help configuring my new pc to overclock... I don't know where to starttt, I have seen videos on the net but non of them really explains...multiplier and such My rig is Rampage V Extreme i7 5960x G.Skill 8x8gb, 2800mhz Asus titan X Zalman 1000HP PSU I will be buying Corsair H110i soon for optimal cooling on cpu I would love you guys to help me understand how to overclock it to 4000+... help?? thanks!
  11. A lot of member here ask about why their cpu is not able to OC llke the others and we mostly say it's silicon lottery. The folks over at Tom's Hardware has manage to get their hands on five Core i7 5960X to see how high each one is able to OC, as well as got to chat with Intel's Paul Zagacki, principal engineer with the company’s client computing group. On what their team went through in bringing higher stable overclocks in Devil Canyon. Check it out. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-retail-intel-core-i7-5960x-cpu,4237.html
  12. Hi. 13. I recently bought Intel 5960x Processor and Asus x99E-WS motherboard which can support upto 128gb ram but intel website says that the processor can only support upto 64gb ram. I am really confused here can anyone please explain?
  14. So I just finished all the cable management in my system which is the final step in the competion of my rig. Only there is one cable that is not plugged in and that is the g 1/4" temperature plug. It is a two pin connector that is attached to the reservoir, I just have no idea where to plug it in the motherboard. I am using the X99 Deluxe motherboard from Asus and I don't have any idea where to plug it in. I have looked in the manuel but no luck. Does anybody know where to plug in the temp sensor into this motherboard??
  15. Hello, i've just ordered the i7 5960x, and i wanted to know if it's okay to run it with 750w Cooler Master GX 80Plus Bronze PSU also i'm running gtx 970 strix with no sli configurations. just the GPU itself with 3Drives 1 SSD and 2 HDD's also i wanted to know if the Cooler Master Seidon 240m is enough to cool this beast
  16. Hey guys, so I'm currently planning a build for video editing and gaming. After about a month or so of research and looking around, I've decided to this build, my only questions are about the power supply and cooling - is there enough watts? Is the cooling going to keep the components at normal temperatures while on load (70-85 degrees celsius). I'm also debating between two cases. Here's the components list: Asus X99 Deluxe Intel Core i7 5960x G.SKILL Ripjaws4 DDR4 4x 8GB 2666MHz CL15 Black NZXT H440 Black & Blue OR Fractal Design R5 Titanium with Window Corsair Hydro Series H110 OR H100i Corsair SP120 Twin Pack ( x 2 ) Corsair 1200W Professional Platinum Samsung 850 Pro 1TB WD Black 2TB ( x2) Asus Geforce GTX Titan X 12GB ( x2 SLI) Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit ------------------------------------ I'm decided on the graphics card, processor, memory, ssd, storage, sofware, but I'm not sure about the fans, cooling and PSU. It would be very nice if somebody could help me out with the PSU and cooling.
  17. Hello Linustechtips community, I've been running this system for a while now and so far so good. But being naked, it does catch dust. So far, i've been using the compressed air cans to blow them away but i'm looking for a more permanent solution. I'm posting here to garner comments on how i should go about it, and at the same time to thank SPOTSWOOD for building this custom workbench. So far the only idea i have is to make a cube of acrylic but i'm a little concerned about the air flow when it's place. Once i run out of space i'll be installing another 14 HDDs to fill up all the empty bays and that will in turn bring vibration and heat. Plus the flat surface at the top will be a nesting ground for dust. What do you guys think? Comments and critics are welcome! More images here. 18. Seeing that Intel 5960x supports DDR4 .... is there ,or will be any MB that will support DDR3 RAM? So far i'm only seeing DDR4.... Or do i seriously need to upgrade to DDR4... because i already have 32GB DDR3 RAM and i don't want to just throw away that. Thanks
  19. Hi Everyone! I just wanted to share my "Arctic Panther" build here on the LTT forums, I have some more work still to do but I posted the hardline tube bending video last night. 20. Well Hello everyone, I would like to ask you guys first of all your opinion of my system, than would you recommend overclocking (if yes than how much and either or both CPU and GPU) ??? System info: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/4RR4qk
  21. First post, but you gotta start somewhere. Hoping you can help me with two specific issues. Overclocking failed No keyboard detected Back in January 2015 I purchased the following rig: CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X Extreme Unlocked, S 2011-3, Haswell-E, 8 Core, 3.0GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo, 40PCI-E Lane, 20MB Cache, Retail (Link) GPU: 2 x 4GB EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0, 7010MHz GDDR5, GPU 1266MHz, Boost 1367MHz, 2048 Cores, 3x DP, 1x DVI-I, 1x HDMI (Link) RAM: 64GB (8x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black PC4-19200 (2400), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 14-16-16-31, XMP 2.0, 1.2V (Link) Storage: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO Basic SSD SATA III 6Gb/s 7mm Slim 3-core MEX Controller Read 540MB/s Write 520MB/s 512MB 97K IOPS (Link) 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 3 6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Cache 8ms OEM NCQ (Link) Case: Silverstone SST-FT01S USB 3.0, Silver Fortress Tower ATX Mid Case w/o PSU (Link) Motherboard: OEM X99-A ASUS (Link) Monitor: 27" Asus PG278Q ROG Swift G-Sync 144Hz Gaming Monitor WHQD DisplayPort 2560x1440 350cd/m2 80M:1 1ms 2xUSB 3.0 Ports (Link) PSU: Only RM750W Modular Gold Silent PSU (Link) Cooling: Entry level water cooling block for CPU Apologies if some of the links aren't working now. They are 18 months old. The purchase was from a reputable company in the UK (which is where I'm based), who also did the build for me. In hindsight I wish I'd built it myself. This was a very high-end rig due to the requirements for high-end gaming but mainly the mathematical computational modelling work I do (neural networks, etc.). As far as I could manage this was a balanced machine that provided the best of both worlds. The provider did all the initial overclocking (non-GPU), including RAM. However, on first boot the machine went into overclocking failed and long story short I eventually turned all overclocking off. I later understood that with this particular Asus X99-A motherboard, overclocking the RAM with all slots occupied doesn't work very well. Despite this, I still struggle with two issues. Firstly, although the post is reasonably long probably due to the graphics cards and RAM, 1 in 4 times my post takes best part of a minute and eventually comes back with 'no keyboard detected'. Other times, I get 'overclocking failed' despite no overclocking. I have updated the bios to the latest version. I am keen to provide more information if necessary but curious to learn if anyone else has experienced related issues with this mobo and/or CPU set-up? Has anyone else maxed out the 8 RAM slots? I am keen to re-overclock this machine but I can barely get it 100% stable on factory settings. *Edit* I have tried the keyboard in different USB 2.0 and different 3.0 ports. No change. Overclocking failed issues are intermittent and around 25% of the time. Thanks for any help in advance.
  22. I have a 5820k six core Haswell-E CPU that I want to push to the limits while allowing it to be stable enough to be practical in everyday use and gaming. I use an ASRock X99 Professional Gaming i7 motherboard, which I consider to be a pretty good mid tier board for overclocking. As of now, I am running a somewhat unorthodox overclock setting where I use per core as opposed to all core overclocking with adaptive voltage as opposed to override voltage with L1 LLC at 1.42v core, 1.3v cache, and 2.15v input. I have it set up so that only one active core can go up to 4.7 GHz while 5 active cores can go up to 4.6 GHz and 6 active cores to 4.5 GHz, as I discovered that pushing all cores to its limits is somewhat impractical for the use case I have. System agent offset is also around +0.3, any lower and some of my RAM will disappear from my system. My CPU is currently being cooled by a 360mm all in one and the fans are set to max out at 80C, which is actually a fail safe that ASRock put in my particular board that can be adjusted but not disabled, so overheating is not really a concern. However, I still don’t want to go ham on the voltages and potentially fry my CPU just from turning it on, so what is a borderline suicide overclock voltage that you would recommend before it is considered kissing my silicon goodbye? I definitely don’t want to go above 1.45v on core or 2.2v on input unless I know it is safe. At 3.5 GHz cache, what is a reasonable voltage to run it at? I think 1.3v is a tad overkill and I can potentially make more headroom by turning cache voltage down. It was what ASRock set it to in its overclock presets. >inb4 people say 1.35v is max safe voltage also I am increasing voltage as opposed to lowering clock speeds because I’m too stubborn to settle for less speed. my system spat out a clock watchdog timeout when I played rainbow six siege so maybe I should lower clocks... afaik when you get whea uncorrectable error is when you have too low voltages for a particular clock speed, but I only got that once, before I bumped up voltages. is this a lost cause? also mods, where do I post for overclocking tips?
  23. Hey everyone! A short while ago, I posted here for feedback on the machine I was putting together, and I ended up putting together the unit, with the following: Thermaltake Core X9 Black E-ATX Stackable Tt LCS Certified Cube Chassis CA-1D8-00F1WN-00 ASRock X99 Extreme11 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard 2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 06G-P4-4998-KR 6GB CLASSIFIED 1 x Intel Core i7-5960X Haswell-E 8-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W 1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q-64GVK 1 x Antec HCP Platinum HCP-1000 1000W ATX12V V2.32 / EPS12V V2.92 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified ... 2 x SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V5P512BW 1 x Noctua NF-A15 PWM 140mm Premium Quiet Quality Fan with Round Frame, AAO Technology 1 x Noctua NH-D15S 140mm SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 PWM Fans So while I am overjoyed to begin to tinker, I do have a few issues. Of course. Hehe. For starters, to be clear, I intend on overclocking; but no overclocking at all has been done yet, everything is stock from the vendor. Ah.. And, I haven't setup RAID for the m.2 drives yet.. So.. with that: Things were going great, well.. never. We started off with some ddr4 compat issues, but a quick trip to a local computer store resolved that; moving on, once I got the bios updated, I was able to pretty quickly get around to getting up and operational, then begin stability testing / benchmarking with furmark, aida64 and the cpubenchmark benchmark tool. My machine performed at 5600~ for the score at stock, without raid on the drives ultra m.2 drives. I had a few weird crashes once I got the machine up in SLI.. Three or so, during a furmark, and aida64 test (separately). During each crash I was monitoring the temperatures for CPU, MOBO, GPUs, and the cpu/mobo stayed super cool, at around ~40ish, the GPU's never went above 75ish on furmark, or above 65 on AIDA64. On each crash, I rebooted the machine, and ASROCKs Dr Debug popped up with b4 issue (which isn't a code in my book, but on x77 boards, it pertained to legacy rom or pcie or something?), I rebooted once more (in all instances of this), and got a 94 code. This is for a PCIE card. Darn. So I am in the middle of trying to debug this as we speak, and here's what i've tried so far: When taking the second video card out, it doesn't seem to have any issues at all, it is a bit laggy during the test (like intermittent frame skips), enough to use a different PC while it's stability testing right now, but.. I don't know if that is normal. Nevertheless, at the very least it isn't crashing. I also tried the reverse (with the other gfx card), in a lesser capacity, and it didn't crash either. (I was hoping to discover this card crashing, so I could atleast RMA, and get it going.) In addition to the above, I ran the AIDA64 test with everything but the GPUs selected, and it ran great. No issues, I was able to watch youtube videos, no frame stuttering, etc. I'm still digging around, but if you guys have any thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate feedback! edit: phrasing, edit2: attached a few screencaptures of stability testing with a single gfx card a,.. I'm not sure what would help, so I grabbed everything from the aida64 stability test. please let me know if I can provide more details/better information. This test was with everything selected (minus hdd) for ~25 minutes, I'll get gfx card b and memtest posted shortly.
  24. I've overclocked my 5960X to 4.6GHz on all 8 cores with HPT on, but my problem is that I've overclocked in the Bios and every settings in the bios are saved, but when I entered Windows, it's actually not overclocked, I can't explain that, every settings in the Bios are set to the overclock settings. I've tried increasing the coere voltage and even the PSU, but no hope. Problem is that every single time it's on stock CPU clock and ram frequency is also at stock
