Hi. We might buy my Dad a laptop if we can afford it. - He specifically wants 4k video editing. - I'm not sure if he'll use special effects. - He's an artist (painting, photography, poetry, video). -Videos and photos are from his camera. - afaik, he'll use it at home, maybe in the backyard, maybe at my brother's house. - Bringing it to my aunt's house in Mexico for vacation is a possibility. No idea if he'll do this tho. - I think he uses Adobe premiere elements 10 but maybe only because it came with his old laptop Budget: $1000 Cad. Maybe $1500 Cad? ($742 to $1,113 usd) Canada. So: - is an rtx 3050 (laptop version) good enough? Or would that be disappointing to edit 4k with? - what about a gtx 1650? Lol - minimum VRAM? - does it matter whether the GPU is AMD or Nvidia? - is an SSD fine to start with? - he has a 3TB usb 3 external drive (HDD I think). Is that good for storage? - is super fast nvme drive important? (might upgrade to that later) - Does nvme speed / pcie bandwidth thingy matter? - is anything 12th or 13th gen Intel CPU good enough? 11th gen? Which AMD CPUs are good enough? Keep in mind this is for a laptop. - for a very budget situation, is 8GB regular ram enough to start with? 16GB? Again, budget is only $1k - $1.5k Canadian. - how important is ram speed? - also is Apple good for the price? I think my dad's used to Windows tho. Let me know. Thanks.

Budget (including currency): 1500 Euro Country: North Macedonia Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Premiere Pro ( heavy video effects, 4K and 8K video ), After Effects, FPS Gaming Other details Currently I have: Intel I7-5930K Asus Strix x99 Gaming x2 - 8GB Kingston Hyperx Fury x2 - 8GB Kingston Hyperx Predator Asus Strix GTX 1060 6gb MasterLiquid Pro 280 ( Dont remember the exact model, on mine only the block is different ) Cooler Master V750 - 80 PLUS Gold Power Supply --------------------------- So I would like to upgrade the CPU and Motherboard on my 5 year old PC and I cant decide what to get... I was thinking of AMD 5930x or AMD 5900x, for the motherboard I like the ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F Gaming The other option I was thinking is to wait for the new AMD5 boards and Zen4 CPU to come out ( hopefully next year ) and buy them, so I can have even better parts and the option to upgrade just the CPU after 4-5 years. Or maybe I should get Intel CPU since the integrated GPU helps the playback and render on Premiere Pro. ( Noticed that on my MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF ). The GPU is okay for now, my main goal is to have a better PC for Video Editing.

Hello everyone, thank you for your time. I am helping my cousin transition from his iMac to the PC family. He goes to school for film, and takes pride in what he shoots, but also what he can do in post. In his words, he plans to not only edit his 4k videos, but also begin "doing more CGI-based work.. so more work with Blender or Cinema 4D". Budget: USD $2500 , but he is willing to go a little extra for a necessary reason. *US availability Expected programs: Adobe Premiere, Blender, and Cinema 4D Here is the part list I have currently made for him: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Pgc3LP Please let me know what parts are more optimal, etc. I think he wants to get the most out of his budget. Do you recommend he wait and hope he happens to get a rtx 3080? I don't think it's necessary, but I also am not familiar with this kind of workload. Thank you ! EDIT: He does, unfortunately, need wifi. Not for uploading, but for other things.

I've come into a role recently that has me editing a local film. Family has decided to buy me a computer as a gift for the job. The film group began shooting in 4K, but changed to 1080p halfway through, so I need a computer than can edit 4K footage. I would also like to do serious gaming on it. I'd also like to be VR ready. I've asked what my budget on this system is, claiming a 4K editing build may run over $1500 USD and they said "Just find out what would be perfect for you and we'll see what we can do." I've presented them with the following build and they gave me the go ahead to buy it. I wanted to keep it at a good value, but I need it to have no problem doing anything. Choosing parts seems the most daunting thing I've ever done. I've learned that a 4k video editing build needs a great processor and a healthy amount of RAM so I went big on those.. My biggest fear is buying all these parts and having some small mistake or oversight ruin everything. I also worry about having a build that's not perfectly optimized, having certain parts more powerful and other parts bottle-necking the performance. I already have a copy of Win7 that I've activated on maybe 3 computers so far with no problem. Should I go for Win10 or just continue with my Win7? If you have any suggestions, advice, anything will help. Thank you so much.

Hey guys, Been a fan of LTT over the years and finally became a forum member! Over the years I have been becoming more fond of the idea of a tiny pc that can play the latest and greatest in terms of video games as well as being a capable media production rig. Recently, I have been doing more media production work with Adobe Premiere Pro with 4k Video Editing, working with 4k video files from a Sony a6500 and Sony a7sII, and was wondering if it is possible to fit a rig inside a sff case like an a4-sfx, s4 mini, or something along the lines like that? I live in a pretty small apartment, and downsizing my rig, even more, would be ideal, especially since with my line of work I move from apartment to apartment kinda frequently. Right now, I have been rocking a Mini-ITX build with the components below: Build Yes, I know the GPU is lacking majorly in my build, I am hoping to upgrade that next starting early 2020. Anyways, I know some compromises will need to be, especially on the hard drive front. I was thinking of putting the two 3.5 drives into a drive enclosure and connecting that via USB-C to the rear motherboard port; one 3.5 hdd is used to store games, the other is to archive footage. With my current build, would it be possible to fit this into a sff case? I am open to any ideas or suggestions. Thanks!

Hi everyone, just looking for a little help. Haven’t bought a new laptop in over 8 and I’m looking for something in the 1000-1300$ price range. I plan on using it for writing and photo editing looking for the most bang for my buck. My Biggest concern is a color accurate screen, it doesn’t have to be the best screen out there just something that is reasonable. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

I hope this is the right place to post this. I am honestly looking for the cheapest computer I can that is capable of editing 4k dji drone videos a couple times a year and handle simple tasks like excel. The reason I want to go to cheap is because I really dont need to use a computer very often other than for those 2 things and occasional internets browse. If you guys have any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I just dont want to make a mistake buying a computer that I think is capable of editing 4k and find out it only can view it. Thank you in advance. Also you will not hurt my feelings if 500-1000 isnt in the ball park.

Hey everyone! I am a freelance videographer and am in need of a serious PC upgrade. I built my current machine back in 2013 and it hasn't received too much of an upgrade since. I can edit 1080p footage just fine but 4K is basically out of the picture. I can't even scrub though a single file in Premiere Pro without it lagging and skipping frames. I'd love some help putting together the best editing focused rig possible. Here's what I'm looking for: OS - Windows 10 CPU - Probably AMD (just whatever is going to give me the best performance) RAM - 32GB minimum GPU - I own a GTX 1060 but I assume I'll need something better Boot Drive - NVME Case - NZXT H500 - 2 USB-C 10Gbps ports if possible - WiFi and Bluetooth if possible (not a necessity) - Fast file transfers and fast Premiere Pro timeline performance are the two biggest goals for this PC. I'm constantly moving large amounts of footage between hard drives and on/off my NAS so I need those fast transfers. And obviously I spend most of my time editing so I need Premiere to handle 4K workflows like a champ. I would love to build something for around $1,000 but I also want this to rig to last me awhile and be good at it's job so I'm okay going higher if needed. Budget (including currency): Under $2,000 Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Editing 1080p and 4K footage primarily in the Adobe Suite. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I plan to use the NZXT H500 case

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing alright and would be kind enough to help me, this is my first post on this forum. I was inspired by this http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/74336-november-9th-ultimate-video-editing-pc-buyers-guide-where-to-buy/ post to make my own video editing workstation. I primarily intend to use After effects, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for my editing needs. I mainly use Canon 5D Mark2 and sometimes Canon 1DC for 4k footage. I am planning to buy these parts for my PC with keeping in Linus's recommended video editing work station in mind and using it as a guideline. You can view my custom pc here; http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3cfKK (Just in-case the link expires, here's the complete list) CPU: Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S 55.0 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: Asus X79 DELUXE ATX LGA2011 Motherboard Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory Storage: Intel 530 Series 240GB 2.5" Solid State Disk Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card Case: Silverstone TJ04B-EW ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair CSM 450W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply Optical Drive: Pioneer BDR-2208 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) Monitor: Asus PA279Q 27.0" Monitor Keyboard: Logitech K800 Wireless Slim Keyboard I have checked all the parts and they appear to be compatible, however if you think they are incompatible or may not work to their fullest, kindly let me know, I would be most grateful. Ok here are my questions regarding this custom workstation. 1- Whether this PC would be suitable for editing/color grading 4k raw footage. 2- Hence the board I have chosen is a 3 way SLI board, if I decide to put in another graphic card in future, which one should I use, keeping in view that it should be under 400$ 3- Whether my current memory and VGA card is enough to edit 4k raw footage. 4- Whether my motherboard is too expensive enough for my needs and whether another slightly cheaper Asus model would do well with these specifications. ( I also like P9X79 LE https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79_LE/ it seems compatible with my processor but I am not sure if I go with it, will it have an effect on the overall performance of the system . I don't know you tell me?) 5- I know some parts are missing e.g. Fans and heatsinks, kindly recommend how many and which brand I should use for fans, my total voltage for all these parts is coming upto 398W. My main aim is to make a good video editing work station, with keeping in view that it should be less than 3000$ and should provide optimum performance for at least 3-4 years for the aforementioned software and camera gear, in future I intend to upgrade it with memory, storage and VGA as my needs demand. I also cant afford Quadro and other high end graphic cards recommended for video editing workstations at the moment, hence the GeForce 660. Also there will be very little or no use of 3d applications like 3d studio max etc my main work will deal with 2k and 4k footage. I understand that I am not a pro and I have very basic knowledge when it comes to computer hardware, so please forgive if I have missed anything while assembling this virtual machine I will really appreciate any input/recommendation and will be grateful for any help regarding this matter(hopefully from the Admin as well). Thank you. Regards, ALI.
