Running at stock clock speed with my h100i, these are the temps I'm getting. I checked the contact point for the AIO Cooler and the thermal paste is lacking, dried and cracked. I already have new paste on the way. I guess my reason for posting is to ask if a 30 degree difference because of really bad thermal paste is justifiable. I saw lukes take on it, but i think this may be a little more sever and definitely with a little hotter of a CPU than the 6700 he tested wtih.

Hello! I am working on a project for my YouTube channel where I am using 4K video from a Fuji X-T3 camera. I use H264 codec and I am able to have a fairly stable workflow. I was thinking of upgrading my PC to a more modern CPU, and the 9900K comes up as a preferred choice these days. But I am not sure the "upgrade" would be worthed. The current water-cooled 4930K is a 6 core 12 lane cpu and uses quad channel memory, which I have 32 GB's of it. I also use a water-cooled 1080 Ti. The processor overclocks to 4.5 GHz. If I go for the 9900K it will have 8 cores, dual channel memory. But it will also give me nvMe compatibility, optane compatibility, accelerated h265 processing on Premiere etc. Anyone using a 9900k for video editing 4K h265 files? How is that experience? Is is smooth as silk or does scrubbing snags a little (which is what I am currently experiencing with h264, I can't even touch H265 because the processor doesn't have a built-in video co-processor on the dye. I bought this system in 2014 and I am still amazed that it is holding up so well. But those 4k video files are really tough. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey all, I am trying to push my i7 4930k to the max. I think I have gotten it stable at ratio 36 with base clock 125mhz, 1.35v cpu, 1.1v vccsa. (4.5ghz). This board was preoverclocked with an unknown CPU set to; base clock at 125mhz, vccsa at 1.1, ratio 33, cpu voltage offset. That overclock was stable and read accurately by the system, but I want to push this chip farther. I attempted to change the bclk to 100 and the ratio to 45, like a regular overclock, but the cpu just ran at stock speeds when at 100 bclk. When set at 4.5ghz, the bios says it is running at 4.225ghz. When I get into windows, however, everything says different things; NZXT Cam says 4.5ghz, MSI Afterburner says 4.5ghz, Task Manager says 3.57ghz, and Cinebench says 4.25ghz. It is quite strange; I do get a higher cinebench score though from the 4.125ghz the board originally had, but its still confusing. I would like to try to push it to 5ghz if possible, but if not atleast to its limit. Any advice? EDIT: this is all on a Asus Sabertooth x79 board

I used to be the guy who after every new generation of CPU/GPU, I'd upgrade everything, motherboard, GPU, CPU, RAM, etc. Eventually I became an adult (though to be fair, I was an adult back then, but finances became clearer) and I stopped upgrading every year. I decided to be a bit more sensible and began upgrading GPUs every other gen, but felt my CPU/mobo/RAM would suffice for a good 3 to 4 years. Well here we are 4 gens later and I am sitting with a PC with the following specs: i7 4930k 6 core 16GB of 2400MHz G.Skill TRIDENT DDR3 RAM ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition GTX 980 I won't list the rest of the components because the cooling/PSU/HDD/SDD setup are trivial in this. I am considering moving to a: 8700k 6 core 16GB of (insert MHz here) DDR4 RAM (insert board here that will cost me around 100-150ish) GTX 1080 Back when I built my machine in 2014 I had a pair of 780 TI Classified cards (not sure why) but I gave them up for a 980 which has server me well for years. So the question is would you upgrade? Why or why not? Before everyone says "Bruh that CPU won't bottleneck your GPU AT ALL" know that I have been an enthusiast for eons, and have overclocked all hardware I've owned and I'm not a novice at this--so try to be kind and not berate with the Captain Obvious hat. I am merely asking for opinions. All benchmarks I've seen of older CPUs (usually 4 core 2nd gens) usually are lower by a few frames here and there, and even so I don't game/nor plan to game at 4K anytime soon. I know upgrading it to just a 1080 would probably be comparable for the most with an 8700k, but given how old the system is, and given how I can probably make some decent cash by selling most of my components (though i'd still probably lose 200 to 400 depending on how kind buyers are) is it worth it to upgrade or would it be wiser to wait another year and upgrade then? Some things to keep in mind: 1. I am not a pro-gamer, but game many hours per week. Mostly WoW/Overwatch/Heroes/GTA5/other games. 2. I am a sysadmin and run my own homelab, so any heavy workloads I typically offload on my server, this PC is 100% for personal/entertainment use. 3. I am not a content creator/streamer (which is why a 6 core is/was overkill, but I'm a PC guy, I don't have a fancy car, but I like having a fancy machine). 4. I run triple 1080p panels, at 60Hz (feel free to laugh at me). I don't intend to upgrade them anytime soon. What I am MOSTLY looking for is some sound opinions because my system has served me well for almost 4 years now. Should I pull the trigger on upgrading now and build for another great 4 years (except the GPU getting upgraded maybe 2 years after), or wait for next gen GPUs and overhaul the entire thing? Most* feedback is welcomed! *except trolls

I screwed up a friends build please help! He bought a computer with a Motherboard, 16GB's of DDR3 RAM (Corsair Vengence I believe), a GTX 950 (which he is going to replace with a GTX 1070) and a Seasonic 750watt power supply for under $200. The motherboard is an LGA115x type and I found a 4930K for $170 and I TOTALLY blanked that the 4930K is I believe FCLGA2011 until after he purchased and he can't cancel. I feel like a TOTAL dick but I saw that 4930K and he's the type of person that knows nothing about PC's and I wanted him to have a PC that was equal to or better than my Ryzen 1600 + GTX 1060 6GB rig so that we could play games together and he would have NO issues now and into the future. Original plan was a 4670K but I saw them going for $130-$160 and the 4930K just seemed like the better deal. Idk why I thought it was LGA115x. I really only have experience with the latest 2011-3 sockets and older stuff like the 2600K. I want to get him a cheap 2011 motherboard that won't require BIOS updates to function out of the box. I would have gone Xeon route but I don't want him to have to buy ECC memory when he has DDR3 already. Even though it is a K chip, he likely won't be overclocking at all to start with and if he does, it will be minimal. He'll be using an air cooler. I figure VRM's don't have to be amazing quality since he won't be overclocking really that much if at all and 2011 boards are probably built solid across the board (no pun intended) for power delivery. I REALLY would appreciate ANY help, I do NOT like screwing over my friends, he is a bit impatient but part of that is my fault so I want to get him a board ASAP as he is coming up to visit with the case (supports full size ATX) and I want to get the 4930K running with his steam library. He is currently a console peasant lol but is really interesting in PC gaming. I am really looking for a proven board that WILL work with the 4930K. Unfortunately, I don't live on the tech coast so I can't just test the CPU in someones board. I was hoping to get a used board for $100-160 and I am willing to ship in $20-30 because he's helped me in the past and he's a Veteran with A LOT going on. tl;dr - I accidently got my friend to purchase a 4930K instead of a 4670K for an LGA115x board because I thought it would work. My buddy is a veteran with a lot going on and I am looking for a decent quality 2011 board that will work out of the box with a 4930K. It is important to me. Any help is appreciated.

I need some advice to know if my PC can run 2 virtual machines for gaming purposes. Basically the same thing Linus built in this video. A few games I want to play simultaneously or make 2 instances of: Resident Evil 7 Monster Hunter World (unreleased) Dark Souls 1/2/3 Assetto Corsa My specs are: Intel 4930K (with a ~5-10% OC potential lol) Gigabyte GA-X79S-UP5-WIFi 24GB DDR3 RAM [512GB SSD + 1TB SSHD] + 2TB NAS GTX 780 Ti Seasonic 650W PSU (individually sleeved !) Custom water cooling Can my CPU manage to handle 2 VM's running A3 games? I'm aware I'll need to get another GPU or two new ones. Also, is there a better way to build what Linus built since the video is 2years old now?

I can't find anything online about this subject. I also understand that this is a mostly Windows site but I thought I might ask since its a hardware thing. Is it possible to put a i7-4930K processor in a Mac Pro late 2013? (Yes I know the trash can.) It has all the same specs (LGA-2011, 40 PCIe lanes, PCIe 3.0, 22nm, TDP 130W, even the same release date) that come with the Mac Pro but is just labeled as an i7. The only topic I saw was with the older Mac Pro towers is that the firmware needs to be updated. If thats the case then where would I find such a thing? I have seen almost every hacintosh builds only use an i7 over xeon's because of the cost. I'm new to the insides of computers so any info will help! I have been watching a lot of Linus' videos on PC's and am trying to understand more of the guts of a computer then the software. Thanks, Matt

Hi, My planned specs are in my signature (I already have some of the parts) I have a 4930k (6 core) and I am wanting to overclock it to about 4.4GHz with a Noctua NH-D15 I also have the windforce 780ti and I was wondering if the Corsair AX760 would be enough to power an additional card, both cards would be overclocked to about 1100Mhz I ran this setup through many online PSU calculators and they are saying that I need a PSU that is over 1000w to run 2 GPU's but I was Wondering if the AX760 would do it (or the AX 860) I don't play many demanding games (CS-GO), I am mainly wanting this build for video editing Thanks, Adobez

So, I am making this build for my self and I cant decide witch cpu to choose... I mean, so many choises. Like 4 cores and 4GHz or 6 cores and 3.5GHz or 6 cores and 3.4GHZ ? Whitch is better for a 4K Build ? I am will be using -----> Dual Gigabyte Windforce GTX 980 I know there is a video on the Youtube Channel that is using the 4930K but then i saw the Ultimate Sub-Zero build and Linus said that the No.1 choise for gamers is the 4790K and then I remembered the 5930K and I thought that it was a preety good choice as well and now i am comfiused ... PLZ HELP ME !!!

Just recently I've upgraded to 8.2, and I can't use GPU in renders, although I've used a (cuda.bat) file hack supplied by (Studio1Productions.com). Which edits the supported GPU list for premiere pro, So I can use it. Yet when I render I don't notice any activity on my GPU. What do you suggest I do ? YES I do have it set to CUDA render in Project Settings after I did the "hack" and rebooted to make sure everything was set...

Just got the ASUS x79 while it's performing phenomenally, I don't really understand it... I tried a bunch of low/medium OC's, all crashed while running prime 95. I set everything back the way it was to start fresh, ran a test for fun and it seems the motherboard is automatically overclocking the 4930k to 4.4 Ghz and 1.37v. I knew the MB auto OC'ed but ive seen screen shots, youtube vids, online instructions and i'm pretty much following what everyone has said/done to a T. I may just leave it at is because 4.4 Ghz, 1.37v and not breaking 65* celsius after testing is pretty good.... Just seems if this is what is auto OC'ed to I could do so much more. Full system specs below... Windows 8.1 PRO 64 bit ASUS x79 Deluxe Intel 4930k Ivy Bridge-E (6 Core) Corsair H100i CPU Cooler Corsair 4 x 8gb 1866 Mhz 1.5v NVIDIA GTX 780 (SLI) NVIDIA GTX 780 (SLI) Samsung 840 Pro SSD 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256 GB 2TB HDD Corsair HX100i PSU

I've been able to keep a stable 4.7 Ghz OC on my 4930k since I've had it. I've been trying to push it to 4.8 but it keeps failing on load tests (prime95 blend). What is everyone running their 4930k's at?

Heyo! I have beenworking on my dream machine for mainly video editing, rendering and light gaming. Lot of multi tasking also. Oh, and by the way. Its a Hackintosh. HACKINTOSH FTW One quick note, I am on my iPad, so please excuse any typos. Here is the PC-Partpicker file: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qNPWyc Now, before you start critizing me about stuff, let me explain. 16 GB of ram is plently for the level of work I will be doing The 970 is perfect. Thanks to a quick replier who helped me with this. Cheers! The second 120GB SSD is just a scratch disk which I will use to hold current video projects so its super fast in FCPX and other programs. Also I will put the low capacity games there like Minecraft and steam games, just so they are fast to boot. The crucial SSD is for boot of course, and it doesnt get the best speed but it has great reliability. Of course, I have an extra set of old HDD's which i will use as a full system backup. The boot SSD and 3 TB ssd will be combined into a fusion drive using this article's method: http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html The case has a nice design and will cool the ram, gpu and HDD's as the CPU is cooled using a water cooled Nepton series cpu cooler. Case fans. My idea is that the front fan (for the HDD's) and the Dual 120mm rad will be pulling air into the case, and the back fan will pull air out. Is this sufficient? This is the best system i could think of in this case, as that would will all the slots for fans. Phew Now, the motherboard is gigabyte, because they are famous for easy hackintoshing. The PSU should be sufficient for now, so dont go crazy about only 750watts. So any input would be amazingly helpful. This is my first build, even though i have torn down many computers and put the back together, and replaced hard drives and cpus. This should be a breeze. Thanks!! Sorry about the random pic of linus, as it wouldnt let me send this without an attachment.

The ultimate question, and I kinda need an ultimate answer. I've spent the best part of 3 hours making my head hurt over if the i7 4930k is the CPU for me. I'll be doing some heavy video editing, some visual effects (AE) - mainly rendering, working with 4K video also. ...but I'll also be gaming, they say you don't need a great CPU for gaming at all, but if I got one with more cores and a slower clock speed for editing, would this make gaming less.. awesome? My budget is $3500... but this includes over $1000 dollars already spent on case, motherboard, monitor and keyboard. Oh, and I ordered the CPU cooler today. For the first month or so I'll be running one graphics card, then I'll probably add another in SLI. Technically I could get a better CPU now, which is less upgradable and wait a another month for the extra GPU... and I'll probably have to cut down on RAM or something for now, I don't know... But the POINT is, if I go ahead and spend $1000 on a CPU, am I getting a good bang for buck, there are so many options with Intel, I don't even know where to start, SO... recommendations? Here's the build on PcPartPicker: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/MLqnXL Thanks for your time guys!

hey guys, im new to this forum, but i have been watching linus tech tips and ncix for a while now. i am currently building a workstation/gaming pc and i really need some advice on the components i need to put in it. my overall budget is $1600 and i need at least a 6core cpu to help me render faster with vray for sketchup since vray for sketchup uses cpu for rendering. heres my initial build: cpu: intel® Core™ i7-4930K Processor mobo: GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA 2011 HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL 1TB GREEN SSD: KINGSTON HYPER-X 3K 120GB VC: R9-270X 4G GDDR5 256BIT DUAL-X & OC / R9-270X 2G TOXIC EDITION BY SAPPHIRE case: STORM SCOUT II BLACK or CORSAIR GRAPHITE 600T white cooling: CORSAIR HYDRO SERIES H100I PSU: Corsair 750w modular psu i already have ram modules. but i plan on getting those wonderful corsair dominators in the future. my main concern is whether i should go for an r9-270x or a more expensive nvidia gtx760, since i will be using google sketchup software and i am not sure whether amd or nvidia is the best road to go. also if you guys could recomment a cheaper psu prefferably modular and also a cheaper cpu cooler, since i wont be doing any extreme overclocks(this will be my first overclock, im afraid to push it very far, probably wont even oc it yet). your comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanks and god bless:) ps: in the future i plan on getting a second graphics card and maybe another hard drive

Hi, I'm running a 4930K with a P9X79 motherboard with 2 sticks of Kingstons Hyper X Beast 1866MHz dimms, but the dimms are only running at half their default speed eventhough I've set the XMP profile to the one that has the default timings and frequency. That would be 10-11-10-N2 for timings at 1.5V and 1866MHz for the frequency. I'm also running the CPU at 4,6GHz and am not sure whether the CPUs overclock is affecting the ram.

HEY ALL! first time here on linus tech tips forum ran into a dilemma Building a new rig after the razer blade failed on me anyways heres my problem.... Originally i was planning on getting a 4930k and rampage 4 black, but after doing a little more research, i found out that haswell-e is coming really really soon, but not soon enough for me since i need a computer badly. it will also cost me a lot of money buying these 2 components and resell them after the x99 + haswell-e comes out, which i will most likely upgrade to, if the performance boost is siginificant. so i thought to myself that i might as well buy a 4770k and a z87 mobo and upgrade to the new haswell refresh, UNTILL intel decided that z87 will not support haswell refresh or any future cpus Because of the fact that i need a computer as soon as possible, i am going to be down a few hundred either way. i have given myself 2 choices 1) 4930k if the haswell-e performance is not significant 2) 4770k and sell it when x99 chipset comes out. i dont want anything below 4770k because my rig is going to be relaly sexy, and i dont want any last-gen products.. Brainstorm time! thanks guys!

Hello all! I'm upgrading my computer, and have a budget of $1000 for the CPU/motherboard. My use case would be Gaming, programming, and video editing in the near future. The specs that matter, and are carrying over are: 2 EVGA 780 Classifieds 850W Thermaltake PSU The entire build will be watercooled. I was thinking about a 4930k for the CPU, is it worth it? If so, what motherboard? If not, what's better? Thanks all for suggestions!

Hi guys. Im planning to build a professional video editing build. My work deals with HD video editing using Adobe premiere pro, After effects, Speed grade, Pinnacle studio, Photoshop cs6. And strictly no Games. Please help me in building a nice rig that can work without upgrades for next 2 years atleast. Sorted out 4930k & 4770k processors, but lots of confusion regarding socket 2011 motherboards ( saw so many negative reviews with problems ). My budget will be max $2500.

Hello everyone... i was recently asked about an adecuate config for a server... i'm not sure what components would the best... the server is gonna be used for recording a few surveillance cameras 24/7... idk what's better for that purpose if a 4930k or a Xeon or Dual Xeons... also one of the requirements is for the motherboard to have RAID 5 support for up to 6 HDDs... apparently a dedicated RAID card isn't an option for them... any suggestions would be highly appreciated!!

I want to upgrade my pc soon but i dont know what I should choose What I want to do with this pc is gaming, streaming, video editing, overclocking and server hosting (arma 2/3, minecraft / tekkit, starmade) on it. what I am thinking to get : system 1 : intel 4770K asus R.O.G maximus VI extreme and a duel channel 16gb ram kit. system 2 : intel 4930K asus rampage Iv extreme and a quad channel 16gb ram kit. why i choose for the asus boards is beacuse i am going for a colour theme of red, black and dark grey.

I can go as high as the 4930K but i'm just wondering if it's worth my money, cause if not then i'd rather get the 4770K, or the 4790K if it comes out soon (which i doubt)…..i'll be using my pc for architectural rendering and modelling, and of course gaming!

Hello guys. i just bought my 4930k and an asus x79 sabertooth motherboard. Ive watched some reviews and they say ill have ti flash my bios in order for the i7 4930k to work. How do i do this?
