Ok I have gotten the retro pc bug and want to build the king machine for XP, 98SE, and DOS. Phil's computer lab is awesome and LGR this is all their fault From the XP build I have been researching motherboard, graphics cards, and other stats that have drivers and compatibility Mothboard : Asus Rampage IV Extreme Black CPU: Intel I-7 4960x (Yes I know XP max is 2 cores but this is the fast chip for this board) Graphics Cards: Duo 980TIs Storage:4 120GB SSDs in Raid 0 Roughly Ram: HyperX DDR3 2666 32GBs (Yes I know way overkill which is kinda the point) Thoughts? Because of the extra core and ram I was thinking maybe UNRAID and install a 32-bit v and 64-bit for the rare compatibility issues. Any other suggestions on what to do with the extra cores? Don't give me the Windows 7 speech either because I want xp and this will be on its own VLAN no direct internet access and my router is set up to block the subnet access to the WAN. Suggestions for DOS and 98SE welcome also. Maybe a solid P4 build for 98SE or AMD and DOS P-II or III?

Hi! I'm building a retro windows xp pc and I was wondering what cpu between the 2 listed above is better. I'm leaning torwards the pentium as it has stronger single core performance and idk if windows xp era games really uses more than 2 cores but back then i wasnt a hardware enthusiast to know. An am2+ athlon equivallent is good too if you know one.

Hi, I have this program that can make your monitor look like "3d" by tracking your head with the Wii controller and sensor. However, when downloading the program that allows me to do that, it simply doesn't want to start on (windows 10 x64 professional). At first, I had no idea how to get it working, but (i think) I managed to narrow down the issue to the fact that the program targets (.net framework 2.0), while obviously, I have (.net framework 4.7), I tried enabling .net framework 2.0 in control panel, but that didn't work either. I tried windows 8 too, but the problem reoccurs. In the README.txt it says that he used the program on Windows XP sp2 with (.net framework 2). I don't know much about coding but the program runs on C# (also not sure). I would really love to get this program working since I want to use it as my science fair project, I don't have any windows XP devices so I can't really test the program. Here is a link to the Johnny Lee's website(the creator) that has the download link to the Wii head tracking program: http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/ You can see the video on the website on how it works, it's really cool that this program was created almost 10 years ago, I would really love to get it working. Any help would be appreciated. If someone managed to get it working by changing the code, please link a google docs file P.S. Here's a link to the direct download link: http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/WiiDesktopVR_v02.zip P.P.S. If I posted this in the wrong category, please say so.

First of all, I know that Windows XP and 32bit systems in general are obsolete, but I'm trying to add unofficial support for r9 280, 290 and rx 300 series to Windows XP. Asking why I do this is irrelevant, but some of the reasons are: Nostalgia, lots of free time and making people like me who don't have the time to do this happy!... But back to the main question: Is it possible somehow to modify the driver to work with 32bit XP or I need the 64bit version? (I'm trying to avoid the 64bit version because it has some compatibility issues with older games, which would kinda defeat the purpose of this project all togheter)

So I recently discovered about 50 programs/movies/games for Windows XP. Absolutely overjoyed, I fired up compatibility mode, only to find that random bugs a frequent across multiple applications (Saved data being lost, no audio, missing textures, extreme artifacting, and hard crashes, just to name a few). I've decided that I have my heart set on a retro build, and I began looking around. Austin Evans put up a video that was pretty good, but the prices on the parts are a little much, and the hardware seemed overkill (especially the CPU, an 8-core AMD 9590 OC'd to 5 Ghz) Is there a more modest build that I could do? I'm perfectly content with a 32 bit version of the OS and I don't need a ton of storage either. I just want 100% driver support and as few bugs as possible.

Hey everyone, I have another random question. I've been playing around with an older Windows XP machine for older games. I have an Radeon HD 5870 that I want to put in it but the power supply only has one 6-pin connector and the card needs two. There's extra connectors of different sorts ready to use so I was wondering if there are addapters to make one of those work to power the card. The Power Supple is a 460 watt unit so it should have enough juice. Also the case I have didn't have alot of ventilation, only one 90mill fan on the back that wasn't connected yet, is this going to be a problem for gaming and extended use Thanks

I am wanting to dual boot one of my laptops into both windows 10 and XP, I have windows 10 installed on the laptop at the moment and want to add XP, I have resized the disk so I have a 60GB Hard Drive set a side for it now, I am just asking as the last time I tried it with another laptop (which was cheaper and had no valuable info on it) I just assumed it would just be a simple install and it would work but now I can't get into win 10 on it so I am wondering how to install XP onto the laptop without fucking the win 10 install up. Thanks

Hi! I've built a retro gaming pc from loose parts. Is a 120GB HDD enough for XP Home Edition SP3 with all the updates? I'd like to split that hdd in 2: 20gb for the os and 100 for the games. Are 20GB enough for XP SP3 32bit with updates, mozzila, msi afterburner and winamp? And yes I have a windows 10 machine, for new games. Don't say the same old bull.... that XP is dated and I need to upgrade. This is a YOLO pc!

The specs are Gigabyte - GA-Z270M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard 8gb DDR4 240gb 2.5in 850 evo ssd Corsair 450W 80+ Bronze Audigy 2 sound blaster Kabylake I5 740 The Hdd is running widows xp here is the BDOS screen Any help would be appreciated

so, long story short, I moved a Windows XP VM from my old pc to a new one. The VM already had problems but I've established its probably not worth the time and effort of fixing them. My question is if I create a new VM, can I use the same windows disk and key to activate Windows XP with Microsoft either over the internet or via phone. the version is XP Professional if that matters.

Is there anyway to run Windows 8 applications, like new Chrome and League of Legends, on a computer with Windows XP? I'm wondering for a prank to do on a friend.

I'm building a Windows XP gaming rig to run a few older games that don't want to run on Windows 10. I have an old HD 4350 that I keep around for diagnostic purposes and when I install it in this computer everything seems to work fine. But of course I would much rather use my old GTX 480 in this build. It displays the BIOS and the Windows load screen but as soon as windows boots I get black. This wasn't the case the first few times I booted the computer while I was diagnosing other issues. It only started after maybe the third boot. I haven't even had the chance to install the driver to see if that would fix it. I tried installing the 480 driver with the HD4350 installed but it wouldn't let me and I tried installing the 480 in a different slot but the board wants it in the top slot for solo cards before it will boot. Edit: I've also tried booting with just one RAM stick installed. No change. I see the Windows loading screen and then it goes black. Specs: CPU: Intel q6700 MoBo: XFX nForce 780i RAM: 4GB (Though it only shows 2.75GB for some reason) PSU: Antec VP550F (550 Watt)

Been trying to restore this computer to set up with some old games. It's nothing special but should be enough to play GTA 2 and a few others... that is, if it would work. I've gotten past dozens of problems both hardware and software. Just so you're up to speed these are the highlights. -Two dead RAM slots leaving only one and a 128MB RAM maximum -Originally installed Win2k SP4. -All games had wild graphical glitches. -Tried to install graphics driver but the only one I could find was for Win XP. Installed it anyway. -The computer blue screened on boot up. -Installed win XP SP3. -Installed the graphics driver apparently successfully. -Can't install any games due to an Error message I've never encountered before. When I put a disc in the drive I get the error message "Only part of the ReadProcessMemory or ReadProcessMemory request was completed." I haven't been able to find much about this error. Does it have something to do with RAM? could all three slots be bad? I don't think that's the case because I didn't have this problem when it was running Win2k. I did swap to a difrent HDD when I installed Win XP. could that have something to do with it? Any Ideas? Specs: -Intel Pentium II 348MHz -128MB RAM -80GB Western Digital WD800 (easily 15 years old) -On-board graphics -Original proprietary 130 Watt power supply As a side note it's set up as a media PC with a DVD drive and what I assume is a 5.1 surround sound card. The sound card is in a PCI slot and has a strange ribbon cable about 3/4th the width of a Floppy Drive cable running from it to the motherboard. It's an interesting little machine and it would be nice to get it working.

Hi, this is my first time posting in these forums. I play a lot of games ranging from the newest to very old '90s games on PC. I'm sure most of you know that Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 all have poor compatibility with games that run on x32 bit operating systems (not to mention Windows 10's shady compatibility with DirectX9 programs). In order to combat this, I would like to set up a multi boot configuration with Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10 on a SATA III SSD. But there are a few things I'm unsure about, so I'll list my computer's specs and then proceed to point them out. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero IX Z270 LGA1151 CPU: Intel Core I7 7700K Stock clock speeds GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB Overclocked RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz Storage 1: SATA SSD of negotiable capacity (currently own a 128GB, but am going to get a bigger one, perferably 1TB) Storage 2: Seagate Ironwolf 10TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache Optical Drive: Yes Now, the first thing i'm concerned about is attempting to run Windows XP, a x32 bit operating system, with a computer with 16GB of RAM. x32 bit can only support 4GB of RAM, but i don't have a 4GB or less stick, i have two 8GB sticks. Would this stop me in my tracks right there? Or would it work, but only use up to 4GB of ram on 1 stick Is it even compatible with DDR4 RAM or Z270 mobos? Also, is Windows XP and Windows 98 even compatible with being installed on an SSD? (I avoided NVME for compatibility issues with Windows 7, though easily fixable with a patch i heard) Also, i don't know anything really, about Windows 98 and 16bit operating system compatibility or requirements. Also i have no clue if the CPU is too new and incompatible with older operating systems. i know Microsoft blocked Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 in an effort to get more people to "update" to windows 10, but it's easily fixed with an unofficial patch (which i'm currently using) because they should work just fine with Windows 7, but MS got shady. I'd like to throw in Ubuntu if at all possible, as an added bonus. It's not a huge want, but just that. an added bonus. Also, would Windows XP and Windows 98 even support video output through DisplayPort or HDMI? Would I be better off attempting to set up Virtual Machines for XP and 98? If so, or if not, please explain. Thank you for taking the time to check out my conundrum/plan. All input is greatly appreciated!

I found an old Compaq Evo N1000c in my garage from when my dad was a teacher like 20 years ago. I charged it and powered it on and it still works. The only issue is it's locked by his School District. I would like to get it running for fun, but I'd like to spend as little money as possible. Any ideas on how I could format Windows XP without a password and create a new install? I have the product key for Windows XP on the laptop, or I could find a free copy online. I'm thinking if I buy a floppy disk, I could put it in, maybe use the bios to boot from it and boom, reinstall windows? If not that, maybe open up the laptop and replace the old hard drive. I'd still need a floppy with Windows XP on it though. Thx. Just for fun P.S. I don't know if this is the right forum to make this topic under. but it seemed relevant.

Now you can be ugly on the inside & on the outside. recently I have found that I need to get my hands on a copy of XP for compatibility reasons but I am yet to find a reputable source. I have come across a website named Nite Software but this appears to be fake. Any opinions? If possible I would like to avoid buying an OEM copy. Where should I get a copy for a reasonable price?
