  1. Hey guys, quick question, in my company we use VMWare Horizon Client and awful thinclients to access our Network. However, the performance is appalling as the server is in another continent. All our work is web-based but we need the VMs to access shared drive. Is there a way to access the drive only from an external device, for example mapping the drive to a location on a laptop without having to work in the VM?
  2. I'm totally new to Linux, I've used Windows all my life, but I'm doing another very cool, watercooled build and I wanted to try my hand at it! I'm going for a minimalist install of Arch running i3-gaps and to be able to rice a nice desktop environment and learn some Python scripting. Aside from Raspbian, I've never touched Linux, and the installation process I see is gonna be a hassle, but not until I can actually boot into it! The build won't be finished for a while, so I'm practicing on my laptop. I have VMWare Workstation 14, and I created a virtual machine off of the ISO file: archlinux-2018.05.01-x86_64 Am I using the wrong live image? Is it compatible with VMWare? When I first created it, it asked what OS I was using, and under Linux, there was no option for Arch, so I just put Other. Is that important? When I try to boot, it runs some code, but stops shortly, displaying: Error: "(Whatever)" device did not show up after 30 seconds. Falling back to interactive prompt. sh: can't access tty. If anyone knows what's going on and wants to let me know, I'd really appreciate it! Image is down below...
  3. Hey, I wanted to start as an absolute beginner learning vmware, I have a certification test that requires basic knowledge of vmware as well as personal project I would like to work on that requires a program only available in windows XP, I was wondering if anyone knew any good sites to begin learning on the topic, Thanks for everything!
  4. I'm 99% of the way finished with my "Hackintosh" build but ran into a issue with OS X accepting my 970... despite having the appropriate driver installed. So allow me to walk you through my process and hopefully you guys could point out where I went wrong. 1. Install VMware 2. Download OS X 3. Run and Set-Up OS X 4. Link Darwin ISO 5. Install VMware Tools (reduces lag) 6. Shutdown OS X and reopened VMware 7. Adjusted settings RAM - Gave 32GB of my 64GB CPU - Gave 4 of my 6 cores Storage - Gave 250GB of my 1TB SSD Enabled 3D Acceleration Set Vram to 2GB of my 4GB 970 8. Ran System 9. Downloaded and Installed NVIDIA Drivers for OS X 10.11.4 10. Shutdown the "Mac" and Reset VMware 11. Results 32GB RAM 4 Cores 89GB (NOT 250GB) 128MB Vram (NOT 2GB) My end goal is to install FCPX and Garageband, so... Thoughts?
  5. So I installed VMware on my Windows 10 pc Specs: CPU - 5820k (6 core) GPU - 970 4GB (3.5GB NVIDIA is a munch of liars) Mobo - X99A SSD - 1Tb 850 evo RAM - 64GB I enabled "Acccelerated 3D Graphics" enabled and set Vram to 2GB. When I launch OS X I am still limited to 128MB of Vram. My end goal is to install FCPX and Garageband but am unable to because "Your computer's video card does not meet the minimum system requirements."
  6. Hi, I'm on a tight budget but I need a decent build to run multiple Vm instances 24/7. Currently looking for a used Xeon cpu with at least 16 cores, because I can't afford them at full price. I need two cpus to fit it on my Asus Z10PE-D16 WS motherboard, I can't decide yet whether to take E5-2675 v3(non ES) 16 cores 32 threads or E5-2698 v4 20 cores 40 threads(Es version) , both with similar price . I really want to get E5-2698 v4 but I don't know if it will have issues with my mainboard/bios. Here is my build Asus Z10PE-D16 WS 480 usd Crucial 64GB Kit (16GBx4) DDR4 2133 330 usd Superflower Leadex Platinum 750w 150 usd Samsung 512GB SSD 950 PRO NVME M.2 320 usd Cpu E5-2675 v3(non ES) 16 cores 32 threads *2 or E5-2698 v4 20 cores 40 threads*2 8,00/1,000 usd Crappy case and Vga total 2,800-2,200 usd Is this build good? I'll have around 32-40 cpu cores and 64gb ram for my workstation, is there anything else I should add or remove? Please feel free to recommend. Oh one thing, is this seller on ebay legit? http://www.ebay.com/usr/xtrememicro This guy has like 50k positive feedback, yet I can't google him or find his identity on internet. That looks fishy to me but I still want to buy his cheap Xeon cpu.

  8. Hello, the LTT community! So I have my server and it was sitting at around 3GB when I did the data transfer, however now my httpd process (apache) will not start and when I logged into VMware I found that all 100GB of storage was used! Is this a hardware (ie: my drives are failing (although if it was this, I would have seen an error from iDRAC), the drives are overlapping data and a reboot can solve it, etc.) or is this software (ie: virus, DDoS, etc.) My host provider kicked me off the network due to strange amounts of usage from my account, so I am wondering how long this has been going on. Please help. I leave for Norway in two days and NEED this server operational. Sincerely, Joseph
  9. Alright all, so I have been thinking about doing this log for an upgrade I am performing at work. Background I am all self taught, only been into IT for about 4 years now, actually started working in the IT world for about 1 year and a half, luckily the company I have been working at for 5 years(started off as a telemarketer) gave me the opportunity to be an IT assistant for sometime, then my boss and only other person in the IT department got a new job and left with onyl 2 days notice. So I dived in head first with a hefty pay raise, man let me tell you about the mess I ran into. The Old Hardware: 5 Windows servers: 2x Dell Poweredge 2950 2x Dell 850 1x Dell xeon tower(not sure of model) 2x Dell Poweredge 2850 All of these windows servers are running Windows Server 2003 r2 . . . . . . . . ummmm WTF . . . . . . EXTREMELY OUTDATED!!!! I do have one server which is set up as a file share that has win 2008 r2(why i have no idea). on to the rest 11 1x Dell PowerEdge 4x Dell SC1425 2x Dell 1950 4 Built PC's not sure of exact specs all have Xeons haha my worst nightmare now.... the network.... This is a F*$&*#$&# MESS . talk about a heart attack. Ok now they got the defibrillator out..... what ever the 2 it ppl that were in the position before me were smoking out of there pipe must have been some crazy shit. following a cable in here is like threading a 20 gauge wire thru a needle. I am constantly afraid i will accidentally unplug something while trying to see where a cable is going. there are cords unplugged not sure why or where they go.... Now reason I have left it like this is because all of the switches must go. They are a HUGE Bottleneck they are all 10/100 switches. yes thats right no gigabit not even server to server communication. RIDICULOUS. Hardware Upgrade Plans What My original plans were to convert all servers into virtual machines on an Esxi Host with a San or NAS attached making managing the machines like a million times easier. I Have never done this before and only experience with virtual machines was using vmware player to test/make specific development computers/also as a work computer on my home pc.So at first I reached out to a few IT companies to maybe assist with the upgrade as hardware matching can be extremely difficult with Esxi hosts, but after getting a few quotes over $150,000 and knowing that the company wouldnt fork over nearly that much money, I decided for myself(great learning experience) and the company that I had to just take care of this. One of the main problems with Outsourcing it was the companies would only use the vary newest models of whatever brand Dell/hp/cisco, one went as far to try and sell me a technology that cisco just released a couple weeks before and then couldnt even get pricing for it. So I went to VMwares compatibility guide and started looking around at some host. I have like the dell machines they are fairly easy to work on , fairly easy to find parts, Looking for something with similiar features that the ESxi host that other companies had recommended, I found a Dell R710 Hex-core with 48 gb of ram installed for $400 thru pcserverparts on ebay, they had a 5 star rating and offer a 30 day guarantee. Next was the Nas I had determined I needed about 8 TB of usable storage, but also needed redundancy, also performance would be nice although not super needed. I opted for RAID 10 in sets of 4x 1 tb drives giving me just under 2Tb(1.8 to be exact) of usable storage. Next was the case On one of linus' video he had a norco 4224 which looked like what i needed and it was fairly priced on newegg but I opted for just the 20-bay version Norco-RPC-4220 At this point I was unsure what OS for the NAS i wanted to use, unfortunately vmware Vsan software would not have worked because that uses the drives in the Esxi host as a san, I wante a seperate unit. FreeNas , i was just unsure about using it in a enterprise enviroment, although like I said demand on the drives is fairly small. I looked at buying a isx systems machine with TrueNAS , basically a enterprise version of Freenas+support, but I wanted to make this machine and support..pshhhh i got this. also there was Open-e's DSS v.7, I tested this out withand it seemed vary similiar to freenas but was super basic. I opted for FreeNAS, had some experience I knew it could do everything I needed, and even more than I needed. so this is the hardware for the NAS http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cQqLvK here is the PSU - Newegg HBA (LSI) card - Newegg and some Sff-8087 cables Once I actually got all these pieces Im going to start a new post with the building, will be up shortly
  10. I'm doing a course based on IT Networking and need to compare and contrast the most popular and relevant VM software. I only know about/have experience with VMware and VirtualBox, and was wondering if anyone experienced in this area could chime in and offer some insight. What is the best software other than these two offerings? Where can I find the hardware/software requirements listings for these programs and what are the pros and cons? Thanks in advance for any help guys. (:
  11. Hello friends! I am trying to use VMWare Player 12.1. I have been using it to create an instance of Linux Mint in my Windows 10 environment that I can dedicate a mouse, keyboard and monitor to for my fiance to use as a personal computer. It worked great for some weeks. We had to move this week, and we are staying at my family's place for a bit. The VMWare software no longer works, I tried troubleshooting like no one's business. Restart, process ending, etc. I finally uninstalled it with the hopes that a reinstall would work. It doesn't. The installer starts, and then just sits there without doing anything. It allocates some RAM to the process, and then nothing happens after that. I've let it sit for 20+ minutes and it just doesn't install. The only thing that's changed on my computer is the network I'm connected to. If you guys have any ideas, let me know. Specs: Win 10 64-bit, AMD FX-4300, GTX 750 Ti, Lepa 500W, Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P Motherboard, 8GB 1866MHz DDR3.
  12. are there any downsides to running any of the selfhosted cloud apps (owncloud, pydio, seafile etc) in a virtual machine, with the data being stored in a virtual hard drive file, as opposed to directly on the physical drive?
  13. I have setup a VM for Windows 10 and the resolution is crap (1600x1200) I try to change it inside of te Windows 10 VM but there is not my default screen resolution (1366x768) I try o change it but it skips right past that resolution.
  14. So I'm going to setup a Vmware system using Windows 8.1 to run key logging, I.P. address tracking, hiding my I.P. address (making my VM's I.P. address hidden), driving notepad commands via .batch files, and for fucking with people. Need some help setting this up. Thanks.
  15. Has anybody tried migrating their .vhdx file from a physical drive of a machine to a virtual machine .vmdk in vmware? Trying to bring my Win7 environment to a virtual environment on my desktop in vmware. I converted the .vhdx file to vmware's .vmdk format using STARWIND V2V converter but it somehow made 2 .vmdk files, 1 was 1kb and the other was the actual size of the disk which is around 160 gigs. It was suppose to be easy by just swapping .vmdk files in the VM folder but ran into some issues. Any input would help.
  16. I have a server that is not doing much but I want to keep going, it has a software RAID(1) using mdadm that I would ideally like to keep in tack and pass through ESXi to the Ubuntu vm. So currently it is just a physical machine with no VM's on it, I want to clone it then install ESXi and put the image onto the ESXi host. I can't seem to find a good way to do it without losing my RAID. Suggestions or should I just move the data off onto a different location then install everything fresh and reset it all up?

  18. I am currently running mac 10.13 on VMware workstation 14 pro. the system works decently well, however, iMessage continues to be a problem and I am unable to log in to iMessage. Additionally, the laptop I am running it on has a GTX 1050 with 2 GB of VRAM, I am also unable to take advantage of this in the guest operating system. I have followed the instructions located here (https://github.com/toshmatik/VMWare-iMessage/blob/master/instructions.md). however, i get an authentication error when I try to log in. the attached photo is of the authentication error, and below is a coppy of my .vmx file. .encoding = "windows-1252" config.version = "8" virtualHW.version = "14" pciBridge0.present = "TRUE" pciBridge4.present = "TRUE" pciBridge4.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge4.functions = "8" pciBridge5.present = "TRUE" pciBridge5.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge5.functions = "8" pciBridge6.present = "TRUE" pciBridge6.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge6.functions = "8" pciBridge7.present = "TRUE" pciBridge7.virtualDev = "pcieRootPort" pciBridge7.functions = "8" vmci0.present = "TRUE" smc.present = "TRUE" hpet0.present = "TRUE" ich7m.present = "TRUE" usb.vbluetooth.startConnected = "TRUE" firmware = "efi" displayName = "macOS 10.13" guestOS = "darwin17-64" nvram = "macOS 10.13.nvram" virtualHW.productCompatibility = "hosted" gui.exitOnCLIHLT = "TRUE" powerType.powerOff = "soft" powerType.powerOn = "soft" powerType.suspend = "soft" powerType.reset = "soft" tools.syncTime = "FALSE" sound.autoDetect = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "hdaudio" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.present = "TRUE" numvcpus = "8" memsize = "8192" sata0.present = "TRUE" sata0:0.fileName = "D:\Andrew\VM\macOS High Sierra Final by Techsviewer\macOS High Sierra Final by Techsviewer.vmdk" usb.present = "TRUE" ehci.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci.present = "TRUE" ethernet0.connectionType = "nat" ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000e" ethernet0.present = "TRUE" extendedConfigFile = "macOS 10.13.vmxf" numa.autosize.cookie = "80001" numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode = "8" uuid.bios = "56 4d 1f 79 c0 b2 61 9f-c6 f3 6e 63 cf 2d f6 1f" uuid.location = "56 4d 1f 79 c0 b2 61 9f-c6 f3 6e 63 cf 2d f6 1f" migrate.hostlog = ".\macOS 10.13-b9a97085.hlog" sata0:0.redo = "" pciBridge0.pciSlotNumber = "17" pciBridge4.pciSlotNumber = "21" pciBridge5.pciSlotNumber = "22" pciBridge6.pciSlotNumber = "23" pciBridge7.pciSlotNumber = "24" usb.pciSlotNumber = "32" ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "160" sound.pciSlotNumber = "33" ehci.pciSlotNumber = "34" usb_xhci.pciSlotNumber = "192" vmci0.pciSlotNumber = "35" sata0.pciSlotNumber = "36" vmci0.id = "-819071457" monitor.phys_bits_used = "43" vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "134217728" vmotion.checkpointSVGAPrimarySize = "134217728" cleanShutdown = "FALSE" softPowerOff = "FALSE" sata0:0.present = "TRUE" smc.version = "0" gui.lastPoweredViewMode = "fullscreen" usb_xhci:6.speed = "2" usb_xhci:6.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci:6.deviceType = "hub" usb_xhci:6.port = "6" usb_xhci:6.parent = "-1" usb_xhci:7.speed = "4" usb_xhci:7.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci:7.deviceType = "hub" usb_xhci:7.port = "7" usb_xhci:7.parent = "-1" toolsInstallManager.updateCounter = "69" usb_xhci.autoConnect.device0 = "path:1/0/0/11 autoclean:1" sata0:2.autoDetect = "TRUE" sata0:2.deviceType = "cdrom-raw" sata0:2.fileName = "auto detect" sata0:2.present = "TRUE" sata0:2.connectionStatus = "4" sata0:2.startConnected = "FALSE" usb_xhci:4.speed = "2" usb_xhci:4.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci:4.deviceType = "hub" usb_xhci:4.port = "4" usb_xhci:4.parent = "-1" usb_xhci:5.speed = "4" usb_xhci:5.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci:5.deviceType = "hub" usb_xhci:5.port = "5" usb_xhci:5.parent = "-1" usb_xhci.autoConnect.device1 = "path:1/0/0/7 autoclean:1" gui.viewModeAtPowerOn = "fullscreen" floppy0.startConnected = "FALSE" floppy0.autodetect = "TRUE" cpuid.coresPerSocket = "8" mks.keyboardFilter = "allow" workingDir = "." mks.enable3d = "TRUE" svga.graphicsMemoryKB = "2097152" vvtd.enable = "TRUE" vhv.enable = "TRUE" usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE" floppy0.present = "FALSE" board-id = "Mac-F60DEB81FF30ACF6" hw.model.reflectHost = "FALSE" hw.model = "MacPro6,1" serialNumber.reflectHost = "FALSE" serialNumber = "F5KRP12GF9VM" smbios.reflectHost = "FALSE" board-id.reflectHost = "FALSE" ethernet0.addressType = "static" ethernet0.Address = "8:66:98:1:e8:7d" ethernet0.checkMACAddress = "false" efi.nvram.var.ROM.reflectHost = "FALSE" efi.nvram.var.MLB.reflectHost = "FALSE" efi.nvram.var.ROM = "2273E631D741" efi.nvram.var.MLB = "F5K618306QXDM678C" usb_xhci:8.present = "TRUE" usb_xhci:8.deviceType = "hid" usb_xhci:8.port = "0" usb_xhci:8.parent = "4"
  19. Hello lovely Linus Tech Tips Community! So, all this time I was running Mac Sierra on VMWare on my old Intel i7 5820k, and it worked smoothly. Now that I upgraded my Desktop to an AMD 16 Core Threadripper, VMWare is giving me a hard time. In other words, I can't get Mac to run anymore on VMWare. Other Forums suggested that it may be the AMD architecture. To be precise, as I boot up the OS on VMWare, it gets to the White Apple logo with black background, but no matter how long I wait, the graph (horizontal line that fills up to the right) that normally loads never shows up, and nothing ever happens. Anybody have success running Mac Sierra on an AMD Threadripper system? Thanks in advance
  20. Hi guys. Im searching on components for a programming rig, my job is .Net programming and I'm currently learning Java for Android programming. 21. Hey, I've been working on a server project, and i've successfully installed ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop and the internet works but when i installed ESXi 6.0 the lights on the ports (on the mobo and on the router) are on but the internet doesn't work? (the IPMI feature of the motherboard does work) Specs: CPU: Dual Xeon E5620 4C/8T 2.4 Ghz RAM: 6x8GB DDR3 ECC Mobo: Tyan S7012 what can i do?
  22. Hello everyone, I have another dilemma here. I currently run VMWare's ESXI (free) on my server. At one point, I was thinking of buying it, because I'll be adding an additional CPU to the second socket. Right now, it is just the one CPU and 32GB Memory. But, I want to expand and add more raw power. Anywho, the following is the issue: Cost. It would cost me over $2000 to buy VMWare and another $3000 per year for the required/mandatory support license. That is insane. The server is the central hub for my small business (IT Company). It harbors our website on redundant VMs, monitoring tools, patch management, VPN, and support desk. Not a lot. We use Google Apps for our e-mail and no hardware heavy apps like SQL. I don't see the cost effectiveness of VMWare to us. I don't mind paying for a solution, but the cost of VMWare outweighs the benefits, since we don't use 90% of the features. What I'm looking for in terms of a system is the following features: - Support for Windows OS up to Server 2016 - Support for Linux (mainly Ubuntu Server) - Support for up to 64GB memory - Support for over 8TB of disk space storage (I do like the feature for VMWare's storage pools) - Preferably a web-based remote management feature (not required, but I don't much fancy VMWare's vSphere, it is too clunky and slow) I've looked into unRAID, but not a fan of it.
  23. Looking for a storage solution that would fit our needs as a primary backup target using Veeam. We'd like to have around 40tb usable on the appliance to fit all of our backup needs. We'd probably use the dedupe and compression methods on the Veeam side for any space savings. We're currently looking at the Netapp E series box and received a quote of $15k Canadian for 40tb. Is there anything cheaper out there that would suite our needs? Nothing fancy, just need to dump our nightly veeam backups, restore once in awhile, and that's pretty much it. Thanks
  24. Hello fellow geeks, I'm planning to build my own unRAID NAS, but running VMWare in my homelab already got me thinking. "What if the NAS also runs VMWare?" So that set off a whole string of ideas of which my last one has such a thin line between genius and stupid I just have to do it. The idea: Get an SSD and a bunch of large harddrives. Don't get a RAID controller Install VMWare on the SSD Install unRAID in a VM (on the SSD) Attach the harddrives to the unRAID VM (direct mapping, not an image) Create a RAID volume in unRAID like normal and enable CIFS, NFS, etc. shares. Attach the unRAID volume to VMWare via NFS so I can run more VMs with plenty of disk space. Optional bonus stupid idea: create a Windows VM and attach an iSCSI volume to it so I can use native Windows credentials for shares. And presto, a NAS and VMWare box all in one.
  25. i have an established connection for vmware, its foreign ip address is [::1]:8307. what does this mean?
