First time poster looking to upgrade his phone.
Mathias Schnell posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
Hey everyone! I had only recently started watching Linus' videos on YouTube and found this community as a result. This is also my very first post/thread on this new account and I'm hoping that it will be a good one! So, here's the deal. I currently own a Motorola DROID 4. I liked it because it's fairly durable and is one of the few smartphones I know of with a physical keyboard. Now it's time for me to get a discounted upgrade through Verizon Wireless and I am completely out of the mobile device loop. This is what I'm looking for most in a phone - Android (latest version possible) - Long battery life - Physical buttons - Durability Things like size, screen specs, storage, the power under the hood, etc, don't matter as much to me. I use my phone for pretty basic stuff like Internet browsing, texting, calls, alarm clock, camera, phone light, etc. I DON'T game on my phone (I have a Nintendo 3DS for that). I'm willing to spend up to $100 for the device (my contract doesn't matter, it's shared with relatives who pay for it). The only devices I really have heard of from the past two years are the Samsung Galaxy S series, Samsung Galaxy Note series, Google Nexus series, and the HTC One. Even then, though, I don't really know much about them, or if Verizon even carries them. Don't be afraid to post long dissertations on the subject, I'm not afraid to read through pages and pages of text and specs to find a good phone. Thanks, everyone!- 13 replies

Hey guys, Verizon/Samsung had me do an update the other week on my S4 (my phone is 2 months old). Not sure if it was firmware or an andriod update. But in any case after the update I started to notice some things: 1 - the wake screen will flicker the brightness/contrast levels of the screen 2 - Certain apps (noticed it in snapchat first) will flicker when animating between screens (swiping left or right) 3 - Swiping through my main screens also causes the screen to flicker (barely noticeable) It seems to only happen during animations. I did a quick google search and some old posts would suggest this is a battery issue from charging with 3rd party chargers. It seems to be wide spread. Any solutions or opinions on what I should do? Posts I've found (but don't necessarily trust): 1 - article 1 2 - year old article 3 - Video of the problem, mine is not that bad though (worried it might get that way) sorry if this is a well known problem with an easy fix and I'm just being ignorant.

Verizon Wireless officially brings their XLTE to dozens of cities across the United States. The enhanced LTE service uses Verizon's AWS spectrum to double the speeds available in some of their devices. It's NOT 5g but a faster 4g. Awesome I say if you have Verizon. Faster speeds the better. Find out which cities here:http://s7.vzw.com/is/content/VerizonWireless/eCatalogs/Verizon-XLTE-markets.pdf Find out which XLTE ready devices here:http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?&&&item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneOverviewByDevice&linkId=109&zipRdr=y Articles: http://www.verizonwireless.com/news/article/2014/05/verizon-wireless-xlte.html http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/17/5726726/verizon-could-be-doubling-bandwidth-in-cities-with-so-called-xlte http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/19/verizon-lights-up-improved-xlte-service-in-44-states/ http://www.wpcentral.com/verizon-flips-switch-700-mhz-enhanced-xlte

Comcast decided to up our monthly internet bill so we made the switch to Verizon for internet only. Are there any recommendations you can give on ways to optimize the network to perform better in general? I know already that the router sucks balls, but that's pretty much it.

When I setup my wireless network on my printer, it goes to a screen saying "Setting up..." and it sits there forever. It has been sitting for 10 minutes as of now, and I need the printer to print some documents. I am using an Actiontec MI424WR v1 for a router.

Bell, Rogers and Telus are getting together to keep Verizon out of Canada. Is this good or bad? Read more in this article by The Verge. http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/28/4563600/three-largest-canadian-carriers-lobby-to-keep-verizon-out

So, my family has Verizon as an ISP/Cable provider here in New York. We got them in 2008, and the WiFi speeds were okay. 20 down, 5 up. We got the service upgraded after my WiFi became considerably slower. Now we have 50/25. But, we noticed no increase in speed. My dad calls them and asks why it hasn't become faster, and they assure him it's because we have a lot of devices on the network. The router we use is an ActionTec MI424WR, the basic Verizon router. I told my dad to ask them if it was the router, since it was only 802.11 b/g. Clearly, an 802.11N router is going to take advantage of the quicker speeds. Now, theoretically, 802.11g has the capability of reaching up to 50Mbps. Although, something (not sure what, if a pro wants to chime in) limits it, possibly the ISP beefing up security measures. It slows that to about 15-25Mbps. My grandmother gave me her old router, a cheap Belkin 802.11N router, after her ISP came to install their router. I, out of curiosity, wanted to see if I could connect it to the Verizon router and get faster speeds. The result: Original speeds w/o N router: 18-20Mbps down, 20-22Mbps up With the new router: 40-52Mbps down, 27-30Mbps up The lesson? Make sure you have a new router, and don't buy it from your ISP.

So, my grandmother gave me her old router after her ISP gave her a new one. It's not a bad router, a Belkin F9K1002v3. I have a long ethernet cable and I wanted to know if I could connect the router to my ActionTec Verizon router to get the connection to different areas? The Verizon is only Wireless G, while the Belkin is Wireless N. I cannot replace the Verizon router, as my set top boxes rely on the connection from it to access live TV.

is anyone running Cyanogenmod 11 on their Note 3 Verizon? I have seen that they do have some nightlys available but I was wondering if anyone has used them yet to see just how stable they are. As much as I would love to have the snapshot m8 version for note 3 lte, Verizon sucks and I cant use that version. Just asking for some opinions before I do this and it end up being shit. Thanks!

So I'm trying to change my router to the TP Link C7 but I can't connect to the router settings (you know when you type 192.161.1.1 into the address bar) According to the user manual I just go to tplinklogin.net. I am currently still connected to the verizon router. This worked when I first tried it but not anymore. Sloutions?

I am traveling to Germany for six months and I am looking for a phone that will work with a GSM sim card in Europe and will work on Verizon when I get back. I was looking into the Nexus 5, but I do not think that it will work even though it has CDMA. What about the HTC One or the Galaxy S4 will either of these work? Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks. Or is my best bet to not worry about it and sell whatever phone I get when I come back? -James

So I use an iPhone 5 and a Note II on a daily basis, and love them both, but haven't really given Windows Phone a good try yet. I was looking into buying the Lumia Icon from Verizon, My contract is up in September. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/device/smartphone/nokia-lumia-icon I'm perfectly willing to wait till then to buy the phone on contract for $199, but I saw the Verizon Edge option and started thinking about it, If its the same or cheaper to use Edge instead of buying on a contract renewal, I'd rather do that, that way I'm not locked into a contract. "By participating in Edge, customers on data plans of up to 8 gigabytes get $10 a month off," and on top of that I believe it is now 24 months instead of 20 before you get an upgrade on your phone. (Starting from contracts signed sometime last year I believe) Price of phone off contract - $549.99 Edge Price $22.91 -$10 = $12.91 (The -$10 is for the discount listed under the Edge option, I have a 4GB plan) $12.91 x 24 = $309.84 2 Year Contract Price $199.99 Did I miss something or is it actually more expensive to buy the phone using the Edge plan?

So this video is a leak of a Nokia Lumia 929 "hands on" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Q2aNw-C74 So here are the supposed specs 5 inch 1080p display 20 megapixel 'PureView' camera aluminium body? So it also has the new "three column" W8 phone standard, and it's supposedly excusive to verizon? This is pretty much the love child between the Nokia Lumia 928 and the 1520 Link to an article on The Verge http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/27/5033684/nokia-lumia-929-verizon-specifications-video-leak Sick of the Nokia news yet? I'm not.

Extremetech ran a story a month ago stating that the huge microsever deal AMD struck with Verizon was actually a win for Intel, here's a direct quote from the story. “The vast majority of the CPUs (more than three quarters) AMD is using for this implementation with Verizon are Intel Xeon E3s using the SeaMicro fabric they acquired. So in essence AMD is now becoming a microserver OEM for Intel and is still largely selling Intel parts in microservers for their customers,” ExtremeTech’s Sebastian Anthony reported. Andrew Feldmen, the founder of SeaMicro and now head of microservers at AMD had this to say about it. “ExtremeTech is wrong. I didn’t speak to ExtremeTech. They didn’t ask me,” According to Mr. Feldman all of the Intel based microservers were actually ordered and paid for before AMD acquired SeaMicro and before the Verizon deal was announced. All current & future orders are exclusively Opteron powered. “After the acquisition, and once we built an Opteron-based system, all forward-going orders have been on Opterons,” As far as the Verizon deal is concerned, Intel simply could not meet the requirements set forth by Verizon, Feldman clarified. “They didn’t have a part that met the requirement, is the truth,” he said. “The requirement was 64 gigabytes of DRAM on a single socket part and Intel didn’t have a part. We had a part.” Source

Hey guys. So i was just watching a random youtube video when i noticed the video buffering about 20 seconds in on 360p quaility on youtube. I went on speedtest.net to check my speed to see if something was wrong but i got my regular result of about 60 down and around 30 up. My isp is Verizon fios and i live on the east coast. I went on my phone and brought up the same vid and the throttling happened again. I used my LTE data on my phone (from AT&T) and it worked perfectly. I usually have no issues watching 720p video from youtube but sometimes this does happen. Is verizon throttling my youtube bandwidth? or am i missing something? if there is any solution you can think of it will be appreciated. Here is a speedtest i did at the time of the vid buffering:

So Verizon is at it again i guess. I don't live in the US, but it looks like the big, mean ISP's aren't the only ones to blame here. I don't quite understand the graph completely, but it looks like Netlfix is using congested lines on purpose. Here's the article http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/10/5888239/verizon-netflix-congestion What do you think? Grts Pieter

source It no longer surprises me that Verizon continues to treat customers poorly. If i didnt know better, I would think they are trying to beat EA's reputation. I personally wont be affected by this, but the policy change may affect as many as 22% of customers according to the article. It just shows you how out of control these major companies are becoming. They promise one thing, unlimited data in this example, and once they have your money they completely reneg on the deal and instead give you an inferior product. By all definitions its a bait-and-switch and yet they almost never get in trouble for it.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/mobile/verizon-jumps-the-border-offers-700-million-for-wind-mobile/ I found this article on Hardware Canucks and it seems like this isn't getting enough attention. From my understanding, this is just an announcement of a bid to enter the Canadian mobile market, but this could be huge for Canadian mobile customers. I live in the USA and have been with Verizon for a few years now. Their service has been pretty mediocre at best but considering the landscape of the US mobile phone market, they're not as bad as some other providers and they do at least have EXCELLENT coverage here in the states - I've NEVER had a call dropped for any reason at any time. One other thing that I think will be a big deal for Canadians is how competitive and aggressive Verizon is in the market. They might not be the cheapest but they fight tooth and nail to add to their customer base, and given what I've heard from my friends in Canada, some real competition could mean drastic changes in the near future. So what do y'all think? Will this be a good move for Verizon and/or Canadian customers? How will this change the spectrum of wireless providers in Canada, if at all? And for the Canadian forum members, especially Linus and Slick, does this make you hopeful that other providers will change their strategies or do you just simply want to jump ship to Verizon from your current provider when the time comes? Salutations, tk421

Summary The telecommunications service, Verizon is giving customers stuck on 3G networks, free 4G flip phones. The 3 phones Verizon will be giving are the Orbic Journey V at $99, TCL Flip Pro, and Nokia 2720 V Flip, both at $79. Quotes My thoughts I like this. People need to get off of 3G since one, it's slower compared to LTE and a snail compared to 5G. And two, it's already about 20 years old and needs to be phased out. Yeah, these are SUPER basic phones, (actually they have 2 star ratings on Verizon's website lol) but they have LTE now! Sources the verge
