Hi! I've been having an issue for a while now: when I power my PC down, the clock on it stops. Meaning that when I turn it back on, it keeps the time that I turned it off at, instead of showing the current time. It's annoying, because even if I have it set to change automatically, it doesn't and I have to turn the auto setting for the clock off then on again for the right time to appear. I was wondering if any of you knew what was the problem and how to fix it?

I wanna start a small discussion about the right time to but a laptop. I'm looking for a new one soon, and I tend to experience a lot of buyer's remorse. More specifically, I bought a Haswell, DDR3, 970M gaming laptop right when the market was transitioning to DDR4, Skylake, and Pascal. I wanna try to avoid that this time around, and get a really modern system that can last me for several years. So, with Coffee Lake H and Kaby Lake G becoming more mainstream, I'd like y'alls opinions on the "best time" to purchase a new system.

So, I have installed an LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i RAID Controller in a PC for a new build, and am experiencing extremely long boot times. Sometimes up to 15 minutes. I know this has to do with the RAID Card, If I remove it, Instant 3-4 second boot time. The RAID Controller is running 6x 10TB Seagate Barracuda PRO Drives Running in RAID 5. Does anybody know any way of decreasing the boot time, as it's getting really annoying, and I don't think our customer is going to be very happy with it. I have read somewhere about Flashing a non MPT BIOS onto the Card, but not sure if that is an option on this model. TIA

Can someone help me find a way to change my date and time. I went into my system settings to change my new computers date and time zone. When I went to change it, it says that I need to contact my computers administrator. But I am an administrator on this computer. Also, I went into my local security policy and went to see who can change the date and time, and it says Users and Administrators. But I still can't change anything.

Is it possible to set the BIOS date and time by flashing the ROM? As I understand it, flashing the CMOS resets the hardware clock to some specific date and time such as 1.1.1970 or doesn't touch it at all leaving in the time it was at but whichever the case is, it can't set the date and time right. It'd need more than just flashing the ROM. But am I wrong? For context, my employer could have the supplier flash in a custom BIOS for us with our specific settings entered by default. This is a huge deal for us because we're talking of hundreds of machines that we wouldn't have to configure ourselves at all saving a lot of time for hundreds of times over years to come. But one of the things we need is for the hardware clock to be within +/- 5 minutes from UTC. Flashing the BIOS is included in the price of the unit but other setup work isn't so if they need to do extra steps to set the time it'd affect the price leaving us potentially better off just doing it ourselves as a first-boot process. Then again, we'd have to program, test, validate, have approved and implement such a process wasting time once. So if I ask them to set the time to UTC, will I get fired?

I got a QNAP TS-531X a few days ago. It's running 5 x 8 TB Seagate IronWolf in RAID5. While I do actually quite like the system, one thing is really bugging me... It takes about 8 minutes to fully boot up. I know that not running it 24/7 but turning it off and on all the time isn't to good for the HDDs but there's nothing I can do about that atm as I have to keep it in a room with my bed for the time being. Now everytime I have to access some data quickly and it's off I have to wait the 8 minutes until I can access it. Is it something common with QNAP NASes that they take ages to boot up? I actually wanted to build a NAS myself with custom components but wasn't able to find a case that's small enough to fit in my shelf… Is there some case that has about the dimensions of my QNAP NAS (7.28 (H) x 8.29 (W) x 9.27 (D) inch) or if not, do Synology NASes boot faster? Thanks in advance for any answers

Sup guys, I am planning to build my own gaming pc with some media related like OBS, Photshop and Lightroom. I am not familiar with the magic numbers and letters on pc parts so I spend time on researching, what they're for, which is the best, etc. And I came up with this build. Im not an overclocker guy and I just play some not that powerful games like dota2, pubg, cs:go, etc. Im not planning to play some AAA titles games like Gta V, battlefield, tomb raider, etc (remove the gamer in me if you want). I just want to play games at their highest resolution with ease and comfort. And Im trying to budget some parts here so I didnt go for what is the latest. I picked parts that will do the work but still gives a good performance. And I need help if these parts will fit on my chosen case because its a compact thingy so I need to double check those sizes and spacing. Feel free to say or comment anything. I need some opinions here. A bit of an introduction to the case Roughly 2 years ago Danish police charged two men for assisting piracy by sharing information on how to install and operate the torrent-based streaming service Popcorn Time via a dedicated website (which has been offline since 2015). https://www.theverge.com/2015/8/20/9181243/popcorn-time-how-to-sites-arrested https://gizmodo.com/you-can-get-arrested-in-denmark-just-for-spreading-info-1725141324 Today there was a ruling in the case in the municipal court in Odense. The ruling: One of the men behind the website was sentenced to 6 months probation (with 120 hours of community service) and has to pay a fine of 506,003 DKR (about 83,400 USD). - Dorte Køhler Frandsen, state lawyer with the State Prosecutor for Serious Economic and International Crime. (My translation) Simply put, there's now a precedent within the EU that allows for people to get jail sentences for simply sharing information about illegal streaming sites (and possibly other illegal sources of content). Note, this is not actually downloading anything illegal, mearly talking about and demonstrating an illegal service. The fine was given due to the ad revenue it was estimated that the website had brought in. I guess the only major modifier in regards to just sharing information about the illegal pirate services, is that the website also instructed the users on how to avoid getting caught Unfortunalty, I could not find any information as to whether or not this had any impact on the court's decision. Sources (in Danish, unfortunatly) http://anklagemyndigheden.dk/da/forste-gang-i-europa-39-arig-domt-udbrede-ulovlig-filmtjeneste https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/foerste-sag-i-europa-dansk-mand-doemt-spredning-af-ulovlig-filmtjeneste Personal thoughts: While the content of the website was quite clearly against the Danish penal code, I do think this case could set a dangerous precedent. This case might have been pretty clear cut, but I fear that it could become applicable to cases that fall into a legal grey area. What about torrenting programs like qBittorrent or Vuze? Are those illegal pirating services? While torrents can absolutly be used (and are used) for completely legal purposes, there's also a not insignificant amount of illegal traffic going about through torrenting. Does that mean that installing BitTorrent on your friend's PC is illegal? Is Ninite responsible for assisting in piracy? Edit: The intitial arrest was also discussed on the forum here:

I read and hear many times that you should re-apply thermal paste often, every year and ridiculus stuffl ike that. But I agree that after several years it may be necessary. I decided to leave HWMonitor on while playing AC Origins for 45 minutes, at 1440p Ultra settings. I used Artic Silver 5 pee method on end summer 2013. I have now a 4.4GHz overclock at 1.239V manual set in bios. This are the temps. Still pretty decent for gaming, no? I don't remember my original temps, I started with stock, then 4.2Ghz..used adaptive voltage, not I found out that adaptive voltage not only pointlrss but worse then manual.

Hello I think I have an issue with response time on my monitor. There are 3 modes to choose from: standard, faster and fastest. standard = very blurry image fastest = not blurry but there is a weird shadow thing that appears in motion (especially seeable in games) faster = something between these 2 My monitor is Samsung C24F396FH. Anyone had same issue and knows anything about it??

Hello, I have an ASUS Z170-A motherboard, every time I turn my computer on the ASUS logo bios screen takes around 10-15 seconds. If I look inside my case I can see red LEDs turning on and off, there is one for CPU, GPU, RAM and so on. Is there any way to speed this up or to skip this process entirely?

Hello. The PC below is what I will use for gaming and a tiny bit of video editing. I am just wondering if I need any other parts as I don’t have anything already (except from things like headphones etc). I am also wondering if it will run gta v and cod ww2. Thanks!

Hi! First off, by date I mean date and time in an http response. I'm coding a web server in c++ for fun and I'm building a library to help with things I really don't wanna code more than once ever, one of them being the date in a specific format, and others without using ctime directly. I'm almost done, but now I wonder, what the f* is that for? I've gone through chrome back and forward and I haven't been able to find anything about any dates, and I tried using an arbitrary one, nothing happened, ofc I wanna do everything right but I'm actually clueless as off to why one would ever need this as it doesn't seem to get registered anywhere in the client side and any decent server could do it internally. Thank you.

Hi! Here's the code (excuse any errors, copying the code from VM cuz clipboard sharing just won't work ever): #include <iostream> #include <ctime> using namespace std; class TestClass { public: static void htdtp(); }; void TestClass::htdtp(){ time_t now; now = time(0); char* buffer; tm* timeinfo; timeinfo = gmtime(&rawtime); strftime (buffer, 80, "%a, %b %Y %X %Z", timeinfo); cout << buffer; } int main(){ TestClass::htdtp(); } The idea is to return, I've tried doing so and changing stuff around, and this is the point at which I gave up because it just keeps giving me the same error. This prints out "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" and I can't understand why, because when you put the exact same code that's inside htdtp in main and execute it, it works wonders. Why is this happening? Isn't a segmentation fault error supposed to be associated with ilegal memory usage? If everything is declared and uses exclusively inside the function how can that happen? Thank you.

You find someone that comes from the past (around 50 years) what would you show him?

Umm idk how you'd exactly find him or anything, not necessarily a time machine. What would you show him to prove how much technology has advanced? -
Hey guys I'm a first time builder and I'm really excited to do this. I don't personally care about any companies I just want the "most bang for my buck". I would like a nice looking case if possible (it doesn't have to be amazing I just don't want it to look like a cardboard box). 1. Budget & Location 1600$ budget, might go higher but if it's not too much. I'm from Canada and i don't plan on using any of the old parts of my computer since I'm giving it to my little brother. 2. Aim I want to be able to play games such as the new Tom Clancy: The Division, Farcry Primal and other games of the sort. I'm also going to be doing some 3D animation at some point but it's not urgent. 3. Monitors At the moment I only have 1 monitor, but I'm considering a second one. 4. Peripherals I have a keyboard, mouse and monitor. I am going to need an OS. 5. Why are you upgrading? I'm upgrading because the computer I have at the moment doesn't have the performance I'm looking for anymore since it can't run most of the stuff I want it to because of the outdated parts. Thanks for helping me! I greatly appreciate it.

Hello all, I am in need of a computer quick I have been using a horrible laptop to do a lot of rendering (in which a 4 minute little gaming video took me 4 hours to render) and gaming where the screen was littered with red lines when I played games such as Rocket League and A Story About my Uncle. I have made other threads on this, but other people would hop on and argue, so lets get right into this! 1. Budget & Location My budget is around the $800-$900 and quite possibly low $1000 but would love to stay out of it, and my currency is $USD 2. Aim The aim of this build is editing videos and somewhat light gaming, I love to play smaller games like Cs Go but I would still love to get smooth playable fps on games like fallout 4. As well as possibly streaming. 3. Monitors I will most likely be using one of my tv's that connect through hdmi, or a low end monitor I find around the house 4. Peripherals I will be needing an OS preferably Windows 10, and also a wireless network adapter because I am not in a position to go wired atm. 5. Why are you upgrading? I am upgrading because my laptop is just not cutting it anymore and I believe it is long over due an upgrade 6. Things to note First off I know it going wireless is bad for streaming... no need to remind me xD. Also, please leave notes with your pc part picker list that explains why you choosed the parts and why they would work well with the build! Thanks!

Around 8-10 months ago I built my very first PC. It was basic and due to some issues I never got to finish it. I have now finished school and have saved up around £1000 for my long awaited upgrade. I have noted the couple of things that I did wrong and are going to correct them in this upgrade. The aim of my PC eventually is for it to be as silent as possible. This is one of the main reasons for the large upgrade. I am undecided on what fans i will install into the case but was thinking maybe Silent Wings. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Current PC and what I am upgrading: CPU: Intel I7 4790K Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Ram: Kingston HyperX fury Red 1x8GB HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Blue Case: Zalman Z9 Plus >>> Upgrade: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX GPU: None >>> Upgrade: MSI Geforce GTX 1080 Gaming X/Z (Probably the Z, Will also be doing SLI in future reason why 750W PSU) PSU: EVGA SuperNova Nex 750W >>> Upgrade: Corsair RM750X Fans: None >>> Upgrade: Not sure, Silent Wings? Accessories: None >>> Upgrade: Hue+ Lighting So what do you guys think of my upgrade? Am I making a good choice? Should I change anything? Do you have any suggestions on what fans I should install? Thanks for any help it is truly appreciated!

Hey! It's me again OK, I have example.txt How the hell can I know, when the file was created using c++ (in windows only)?? >_< I'm not really skilled in programming yet... Everything I found was too difficult for me... If there is no simple way, can someone just provide me piece of code which will show file creation year? ^^"""" It would be PERFECT to have, for example, int a with value 2014 (year). help T_______T

So I am going to be upgrading my whole set up and have planned the majority of it already. The last bit I need to do is get a new desk to fit in with everything. The new desk will need to fit 3x27" Asus PG279Q. They will be on a triple monitor stand to make it look a little neater. (Not sure what stand yet been looking at Ergotech Triple Desk Stand). I was looking at the Ikea Linnmon desk but I have 2 issues with it. 1. It needed 1 leg in the centre of the desk reducing room under the desk. 2. It is known to 'sag' when using monitor stands. I will attach a small Diagram of my room and where the desk will be going. The left top corner is where the desk will be going, from the door to the top wall I have about 200-210cm clearance. then from the left wall to the bed there is about 150-160cm clearance. I would like to have a set of drawers next to the bed and a set of drawers next to the door (Either end of the desk). The 3 monitors will go on the left wall on the straight part of the desk. The Colour needs to be black to fit in with my black and red Setup. What Desk would you recommend for this setup? The only reason I have not made a secure choice on the Linnmon is because I am not sure if it will be strong enough and I don't really want a leg in the middle of the centre

Hello! It's been a couple of years since I kept proper up to date with all the technology advancements in the PC universe. I've been looking to upgrade my GPU for a little while now, and will do to a 1080 or 1070. But ever since one of my MOSFETs on my motherboard decided to melt, killing off my good old Z77 ASUS V GENE and 3570K, I have been looking at some new stuff to buy. With innovation moving so slowly the last few years outside GPU technology, when do you guys reckon things will pick up again? and when do you think new technology will "force" a upgrade? As I said I'm not extremely up to date, so is there anything on the horizon that could bring an actual incentive for people on Sandy or Ivy Bridge to upgrade? DDR4 for example does not bring any impressive performance gains for a generational shift, nor does Skylake. I'm guessing there is no need for a PCIe 4.0 standard as of yet. However how long do you guys think it will take before PCIe 4.0 or a new SATA standard would be 'needed' or implemented? Or another form of technology that would be a proper selling point for new hardware? I am contemplating at the moment to wait a little while for Intel (or AMD for that matter) to release a new CPU generation and with that new motherboards following, it is my guess however that I might as well just buy current Skylake hardware as there is such little innovation. Thoughts?

How much battery life are you all getting with your phones, in terms of screen-on time? With my BLU VIVO XL I can get between 5 and 6 hours usually, though I could likely get between 6 and 7 if I was really conservative.
