Yes, thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3, as in using the accessories normally compatible with a MacBook ( pro ) 2017, with a mac-mini. I'm aware of the speed limit and everything but I was wondering because all the vids and articles are on about tb2 peripherals being used on a tb3 device, not the other way around. I'm curious how this would work considering the differences between the two of them.

Hello everyone, I plan to buy a MacBook (please don’t judge the brand, I just prefer macOS for everything except gaming) and I am therefore looking for a USB-c Dongle/hub. I want at least one type A port, as well as one HDMI port. Ethernet and USB-c Pass through are a plus, but not needed. My problem is that I am not able to find a dongle that supports 4K (or even 1440p) they all support max 30Hz, or 1080@60. Is it a limitation of USB 3.1 gen 1? or just cheap brands? And I know the thunderbolt 3 docks supports everything I want and more, but they all cost about 300€ and/or require external power

Hi, This might sound strange and it might not be a viable build but I am wanting to build a small form quad core PC that can connect to my Asus ROG station 2 via thunderbolt 3. The reason being is that currently I have an Asus Transformer Pro 3 and connect it to the Station 2 eGPU when I want to game. It works well but...the dual core CPU is a limiting factor and I am wanting to play Star Citizen when it comes out. I can play most games very well but worried that games like Star Citizen are really going to need a quad core to run properly. So I don't want to waste the Station 2 eGPU enclosure and also it is a great docking station and allows for easy upgrade of the GPU. However I can only find the http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming-ITXac/index.us.asp Fatality Asrock mini-ITX motherboard that seems to support Thunderbolt 3. The first question is would this motherboard recognise the eGPU device and would it actually work? Second question is could I add in the Asus https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboard-Accessory/ThunderboltEX-3/ ThunderboltEX-3 PCIe card to any normal mini-ITX Asus motherboard and would that connect and work with the Station 2 eGPU? Or should I just forget the Station 2 and fit the GPU onto the motherboard and have a normal build and well the Station 2? I think the answer to the second question is the most important as if anyone has connected a eGPU to a normal motherboard via the ThunderboltEX card then that would be the answer I think.

Hi everyone, loving the ASUS Zenbook 3 for almost 7 months now, and I've come back from usb-c dongle hell with one quesion: Is there any good usb c or thunderbolt 3 hub that drives two external monitors AND has passthrough charging? Or is there any usb c/thunderbolt 3 hub that offers a true daisy-chainable usb c port instead of just power passthrough? The closest I have found so far are:Arc Hub by Bourgedesign (kind of unproven brand, not sure if ships yet costs upwards of 100$) has HDMI & mDP which can supposedly be used simultaneouslyPlugable's thunderbolt3 dock as well as owc are professional grade, 300$+ solutions which are overkill for my needs, and do not have simple video outputs, so they would require other adapters to use their usb c ports.Plugable's triple display docking station is a strong contender, and I might end up buying this one, but it costs at least 200$ in my area, does not make full use of thunderbolt 3 capabilities, and I dont need 3 external monitors. plus it does not charge over usb c so it is a step backwards in terms of charging cables.Any insights on this?

I’m curious if I could use any computer (assuming that it’s motherboard has a thunderbolt 3 port) to act as an eGPU for my MacBook Pro? In case the answer is no, what would be the limit?

Hi! It´s been confirmed by dell that the Thunderbolt 3 port is the same as in the old model and won´t support speeds up to 40gbps because they still only use 2 PCIe lanes instead of 4. The XPS 13 2-1 will however have full thunderbolt speed. I´ve been waiting a long time for the new dell XPS 15. I thought that I finally would get a portable professional laptop with good battery life and the power to play games without looking like a toy, and the option to use a eGPU later on when the 1050 wouldn´t be enough. Do anyone recommend any other laptop that is similar but with full Thunderbolt 3 speeds?

I have a couple of usb3.0 connections on the front of my case and want to use one of them for thunderbolt 3 coz I need the transfer speeds for transferring video. I am going to buy an Asus x99-a ii next week. Now the nomenclature on the mobo says it has thunderbolt 3, but it looks like it uses a pcie card to obtain it. In otherwords it is not natively on the mobo. Is there a mobo that supports thunderbolt 3? Can I use one of my USB3.0 connections on the front of my case?

Apparently someone on Reddit has managed to get the Razer core working on MacOS Sierra using a utility which "patches a kext in Sierra to enable TB3 devices" - solving Linus' complaint from WAN show (Dec 16th). Has anyone else tried this? (link:

So Linus, as always went and made bold statements that are quite frankly inaccurate in the latest WAN Show My questions and comments on this to Linus 1) How do you think the all in one MBP dock (with HDMI, 2x USBs, SD Card, ethernet) would work on USB 3.1 when the two USB 3.0 ports would saturate the connection? Apple shows how you can dock MBP to a barebones desktop with a single cable (which I believe is the future) and that's only possible with TB3, not USB 2) Did you forget the fact that you can daisy chain thunderbolt and can potentially connect 4x6 devices to it? The MBP even being capable of that many expansions is incredible and far lot more than what anyone would ever need 3) Linus, you yourself use Thunderbolt 2.0 to connect to a dock in your home. Would that have been possible with a long USB connection? 4) You invested in 10Gb/s network for transferring files around the office. Isn't it better to have 40 Gb/s in the future? With Thunderbolt 3, its also possible to work off an external storage, instead of transferring it @LinusTech @nicklmg

I really want to go small form factor (mini ITX or Intel Skull Canyon) but also have to have firewire to connect to a Saffire pro 40 and can't use a PCIe slot as I need a graphics card. Is it a bad idea to connect a firewire to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and then connect that to a thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter then to the motherboard/NUC? Unless there's a thunderbolt 3 to firewire adapter out there I haven't found yet.... Any thoughts appreciated.

Does anyone know of a ThunderBolt 3 keystone jack that will still allow me to get the speeds of TB3 and not limit me to USB C? I have checked Amazon and CableMatters' website, but couldn't find anything.

Hi there, I am surprised not to find anything on this forum, but I might be doing bad research, or due to the ever changing usb-c protocol. Anyways, my issue. is, I have a friend that wants to build out a 6 monitor set-up being pushed by a macbook pro 2017. Be warned I'm not apple savvy like I am on windows or even Linux, but that is a personal issue. XD I understand you can connect a display over thunderbolt or usb-c (Whatever you want to call it), and you can do the same over a usb-c hub, but my questionis how many displays will be supported over one hub. I am no content creator but my description of things sometimes suck so I made a bad drawing for you too. Hope you can answer my question Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond.

So I'm on the hunt for a new monitor that checks a few boxes: 100Hz+ Ultra-wide or just 27"+ Has Thunderbolt 3 power delivery (85w+, Macbook Pro user looking to simplify my setup) KVM VESA I'm currently looking at Samsung's CJ791 as it checks most of these, but I really don't know if there's a better option and it's really hard to find somewhere to compare monitors that isn't PCPartPicker, so if any of you guys know better options, price doesn't really matter (as long it's under $1200 range) as I'm willing to wait for prices to come down on Black Friday/Cyber Monday/any other sale.

I'm in need of thunderbolt 3 for a audio interface but also wish to use my computer for gaming and streaming. For some reason websites never update their product compatibility lists. So is there anyone that would know what boards are compatible with thunderbolt 3 cards on AM4 boards? I'm currently looking at the B450 AORUS Pro due to a current offer. And the Gigabyte Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 Pcie (either 1.0 or 2.0). But is there a current list anywhere or does anyone know if the newer AM4 boards support it. it simply means for me, for power for less money. Can anyone help?

Hi everyone Last month i tried to find the best gaming laptop for college work and gaming for around $1700(Rs120,000) and i failed to get one. I had to sacrifice something like portability for performance or sacrifice performance for portability. So finally i decided to buy a $1000(Rs70,000) Laptop with thunderbolt 3 and spend extra $700(Rs49000) for an external gpu enclosure and a GPU. I'm not gonna buy a GPU enclosure and slap a cheap GPU on it and call it a day. I'm going to buy a RTX 2070 or RTX 2060 and a GPU enclosure and connect with my laptop. I need a Laptop with best Keyboard and trackpad for college work and after i return home, i connect it and play some games on it. I need a laptop which can handle the horsepower of RTX 2070. So please help me. Thank you. Edit:I'm planning to buy Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2070 or RTX 2060 Gaming Box and use it as my eGPU

Hello people! First topic here so taking all kinds of suggestions So, a month ago I bought Aorus gaming box 2070. The laptop I'm using it with is Asus ux550ve(i7 7700HQ, 1050Ti, 8GB DDR4, 512 M2, FHD 60Hrz) through either of the two tunderbolt 3 ports(believe they are 4x lanes each). And there is something that I can't figure so was hoping some of you can make some sense out of it all: the games I've tried are not many but the results vary BIG. So Rise of the Tomb Raider runs around 70FPS on ultra in FHD, FIFA and HoMM 7 run perfect but they are realtively light. The main problem is Assassins creed! I had Origins and on all Ultra it was running great(60-70FPS) but Odyssey is a total failure on this setup. I've tried playing with the settings but no matter what I do I stay in 20-30FPS range. And it drives me crazy! I understand there will be bottle neck because of the TB3 but is it possible to have such a difference from two consecutive titles of the same game?!? There is plenty of memory on the GPU but can the CPU be the problem in this case? I have a 1080p projector where while connected to the gaming box directly the results gain ~10% in FPS but that's it. Haven't tried on 4K yet but I'm frankly scared because of what I see on FHD. Any ideas why is this occurring? ? Cheers!

Hey guys, I need your help with deciding my upgrade path. Im on Z170-K and 6600k right now. So CPU wise for now a 3600 wld be sufficient. 3700x could come in handy as Im making music. 1. Would you... - A: Buy Ryzen 5 3600 and see how my workloads develop. [209€] If I need more multicore performance, I can still upgrade to that and if I do itll be 4000 series, which will probably have other improvements as well, maybe even another bump in single core performance. So I'd not only jump another tier, but also generation. - B: Buy Ryzen 7 3700x, enjoy slight edge in gaming and be prepared for any realistic future music making and gaming demands. [350€] Id mostly not consider Ryzen 4000 anymore in this case, unless its gonna be vastly better energy, overclocking or SC performance wise. What if ryzen 4000 gets a "likeable" bump in single core performance though - that'd come in handy for gaming as well as making music, since DAWs profit from that? I'd mostly miss out on the latter, as I wont jump from hexa 3000 to octa 4000 but from octa core to octa core in this scenario. There will probably be less possible justification for doing the latter. I think 3900x is definitely overkill for now. Id only buy it if I really know I do need its computing power. 2. Would you... - A: Buy B450 and ditch many features apart from PCIe 4.0 [100€] - B: Buy X570 Taichi by ASrock [320€] with the possibility of TB3 (essential for music production if I upgrade devices!!!), guaranteed 4000 series support and probably easier taming of a 12core or 16core tier should I need that, BT5.0 (which I'd actually use), Wifi 6, M.2 Cooling already there, better IO, better build quality, the better Intel Lan, flashback button and other quality of life features, the possibility of PCIe 4.0. I know your probably asking yourself: why the Taichi mate? Well, its actually the build quality, intel lan, bluetooth and TB3 that I'm after. Therefor, I dont even consider like a 190€ X570 Prime or sth like that. As I'd mostly effectively pay 90ish € for PCIe 4.0 only, which out of all these upsides (apart from better VRMs than B450) is the least attractive one to me. As far as I've seen, the Taichi is the cheapest one with TB3 support out there. Prices: 1.A + 2.A = ~309€ gets me a CPU upgrade but a MB downgrade feature and quality wise (realtek instead of intel lan etc) and the board probably wont be able to handle 12 and 16 core 4000 series, if it handles 4000 series at all. Also, if I ever need TB3 or PCIe 4.0 I need to upgrade. If I need bluetooth or wifi, Ill have to look at an ugly dongle all the time, but I could live with that. 1.B + 2.A = ~ 450€ gets me the same Motherboard downsides, but an amazing CPU. I probably wont consider 4000 series then anymore, and if I dont up my music making and game developers dont start favoring octa over hexa core, Ill have overspent cpu wise. (150 bucks) 1.A + 2.B = 529€ gets me a decent CPU upgrade and a MB with all the features I could ever think of needing + just better feel, quality and stuff like bluetooth and wifi 6 without going through any hassle. Its fan is higher quality than a low end X570 board. Should I need more computing power, 4000 series will more likely be compatible than with B450 - especially the higher tier 12 and 16 core models. Should I not end up needing more computing power, but just TB3 then I dont need to do anything but buy a TB3 card. And all the while I can enjoy BT, Intel Lan, better look and quality, better IO, possibility of using PCIe 4.0 etc. 1.B + 2.B = 670€ another whopping 140 bucks more than 3600 and X570. Quite expensive already to the point where im not sure if getting a 3900x and B450 wouldve been the better option (529+100€ = 629!!!!, gets me a 12 core instead of a hexa core) what do you guys think? I have some sort of blockade, I dont know which combination to get anymore. I really appreciaty any help haha Greetings, Chris #spoiledLifeProblems

Hello. I'm preparing to buy a new occasional gaming laptop and I'm looking forward to buying a new desktop screen to connect it to either with GSync or Freesync but I was wondering: As far as I know these technologies can be used through a mini display port but could they be used through thunderbolt 3 or a normal HDMI 2.0 too in case the laptop I'm buying isn't provided with miniDP? Does any Nvidia laptop GPU offer GSync once connected to an external GSync enabled monitor? I still haven't decided what to buy, but it will be in the range of an all-rounder with a GTX 1650 or 1660ti. Thanks.

My Dad got his current PC for CorelDraw in 2011 and it's high time for an upgrade because it still runs AMD processors from that time frame and I don't need to say why that's a bad idea. I want to get him a laptop with thunderbolt 3 so he can move between home and work and just plug into a hub and go exactly like what Linus did with his cleanest gaming setup a few months back (sans gaming). What's a good option and do I need a GPU for Corel? I know nothing about Corel so any help is appreciated.

Hello, I own a Zephyrus M GM501 model and i wanted to post my findings as i had a bit of trouble finding a straight answer to the question "Can i hook up an external g-sync monitor 144hz to this laptop" and the answer is YES. To any other looking to satisfy this answer i hope they see this post. To be more specific i have used the thunderbolt 3 port with a usb type-c to display port cable to connect the Dell S2419HGF 24" (Freesync 144hz 1080p) to Nvidia Gtx 1060 and it works, tb3 is cabable of 144hz at 1080p and g-sync works with freesync on this panel, some tweaking with colors and we are good to go. Hope this helps someone Sharing is caring..

Hey guys, any of you using X570 boards from ASrock? Id be interested in your thoughts about general quality, the fan quality and noise, as well as the BIOS functionality. Specifically Im thinking about getting either - Phantom Gaming 4 (170€) - Taichi (320€) dont need PCIe 4.0, I'd choose em for their Thunderbolt 3 header, in case I get better Audio Production gear some time later. Also they all seem to have LAN "by Intel" - to be very unspecific here. People call the latter alot better than Realtek alternatives. B450 Tomahawk is a bummer, since apparently two of the four Sata ports dont work, if you actively use the NVME M.2 slot any good alternatives? Id get a 3600 or 3700x Greetings, chris

Hello, I want to buy a ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING-ITX/TB3 Mini ITX Thunderbolt 3 AMD Motherboard. I read that the Thunderbolt 3 can connect up to 2 4k 60hz monitors at the same time. My questions are: 1. Can I just connect a thunderbolt 3 cable to this motherboard that splits into both monitors? 2. What if the monitor does not have an usb c port, will I need to connect it to a display port adapter? 3. Can I connect 2 Asus ROG SWIFT PG279QZ 27.0" 2560x1440 165 Hz Monitor at the same time? If there are any links to tutorials I would appreciate it also. Thanks in advance. -Ub the accountant that is trying to learn about computers to build one.

I'm looking for a Thunderbolt 3 graphics card enclosure for a new laptop that I will buy at the end of this month. I was wondering what compatibillity was like and what I should look out for when buying one. Are there certain ones that I should avoid? Maybe someone has a recommendation for one. I obviously want to spend as little as possible, without sacrificing too much quality. The GPU I'd like to use is a GTX 1080 with a single 8-pin power connector.

So I have an MSI nvidia GTX 1660. SO i plan on using that for an egpu with a laptop. SO I have $1100 to spend on a laptop.I don't want a heavy laptop. I want 1080p or above, intel core i7 8565u and thunderbolt 3 so I can use a gpu with it. I don't mind if it has no dgpu but if I know one with a dgpu please tell me.
