We have a institute wide LAN connection, and each of us have got a static IP. Currently I own a TPLink WR740N router, and I am connecting the LAN cable to the wan port of the router and my NAS to the router through its ethernet port via DHCP. Although I can access to the NAS from the router itself, like from all the devices connected to the router, I can not access the device from anywhere in the LAN connection. Need help. PS. Our institute server is connected to the rest of the world through proxy server with firewall, and the administrator has clearly stated me that he will not allow me to access firewall. So, right now my objective is to access NAS from anywhere in the LAN. Someone asked me to bridge, but I did not understood much by googling. Will bridging work? If yes, how to do it? PSS: I am not so good in these terminologies. Mostly learnt from watching LTT videos.

My Equipment: GS724T - Netgear Switch RT-N66U - Asus Router (Open to other options) AC-Pro - Ubiquiti Wireless Access Point Basic Motorola Modem with one port The current state of things has all my devices, including servers, NAS's, PC's, Internet of things, plex, security cameras plus server recording, and chromecast devices on my home network. I've been doing some research, and I want to ensure that my network is secure. I especially want to ensure that my security cameras aren't accessible to the outside world except through the PC/software that I view them from. Each of the cameras have their own individual log in, but I would like to disconnect them from the internet while keeping them networked together for accessibility through the server I use to record/control them. In addition I would like to completely cut off the internet of things devices (Alexa, thermostat, and various other devices) from my network, but allow them to connect to the internet on their own through a router/firewall. I would like all these devices to still be connected to the DHCP. (Cameras aren't necessary for this since they are static, but I would still like the possibility). To do this I have attempted to set up VLAN groups. I used VLAN10 for security and VLAN 20 for IOT (Internet of Things). VLAN 1 remains the default. I didn't go gung ho right away. I wanted to test this solution via a single computer so I can verify that it can't connect to other devices, but also has an internet connection. So I used Port 24 on the Netgear switch to connect a laptop directly (turning off Wifi to ensure a solid test). I've tried all sorts of combinations, but I've been unsuccessful, but I wanted to get some feedback on what I assume is the correct configuration, and then hopefully someone can fill me in on what I'm missing. First, I went to VLAN1(Default), and removed Port 24(Laptop) from that VLAn. From there I "Tagged" Port 14 which has my router/internet connection. I created VLAN 10(Security), and "Tagged" Port 14(Router/internet), and "Untagged" Port 24(laptop). The remainder of the ports are removed. From here I tested the internet connection. I had no connection, and no IP assigned via DHCP. So I fiddled some more. With the same configuration above I went into the "Port PVID Configuration" and under Port 24(Laptop) I changed the "Configured PVID" to "10." I ran the same tests and got the same results. I used the same config and just changed the "Acceptable Frame Types" to "VLAN Only." I got the same results. Essentially, the only way I got a DHCP IP assignment and internet connection is with these settings: On VLAN1(Default) I "untagged or tagged" port 24(Laptop), and all other ports are "untagged." On VLAN10(Security) I "untagged" Port 24(Laptop), and Tagged Port 14(Router/Internet). I changed the Port PVID Configuration back to it's defaults (Port 24(Laptop) "Configured PVID" to "1" and "Accept all Frames"). The problem is: I still have the device on VLAN1(Default) with all my other devices. What I'm assuming is I have an issue either at the Switch level where I'm missing something (I do have a VLAN Routing Tab that I haven't configured), or I'm missing something at the router level(either compatibility, or other issue). I don't know if I came to the wrong place. But every other forum out there just kinda sucks. So right now, I'm running a WISP network with multiple P2P Bridges feeding towers for redundancy. I am using STP on tough switches (going to be switching them to Netonix) for the redundancy portion of this. To reduce overhead, Im thinking about putting my bridged links in router mode, and routing the traffic through, forcing packets to use a link based on the route in the routers, but then that would require me to reroute data if a link went down. Could I use BGP to handle the weight of an IP and where it goes, then if it fails have it pick the other link? Or should I just stick with STP and bridge mode and call it a day? Side note, I would just use Vlans on the tough switches along with cost and priority to achieve less overhead, but Tough switches kind of suck when it comes to CPU and memory. When I tried that, my throughput was cut in 3/4ths ... like 30 Mb on a 100 Mb link.

So I found this modem router combo on Amazon. If I hook this up to a unmanaged switch will it be able to do all the routing and up address assigning? Also could it handle HD video and games? This is just until I get the UBNT router bought and installed in the rack.

Hello, I have kind of a problem with my whole network setup.. I still live at my parents home and since our internet around here is so slow, I can't play on my PC when someone is streaming a video or some sort of heavy internet usage is going on in the house.. My solution for this problem was to order a second internet line to my house which now works and can be used.. So I have 2 Network cards in my computer and have it connected to both networks.. Now what I want to know is, how can I tell my computer to use one connection for everything in the internet and one connection to acces our NAS and the printer and so on but not the internet, so I don't block the internet for my family... Another idea would be to only tell specific applications to use the second internet and everything else goes through the "old" internet of the whole house.. Hey guys! I have this problem and an idea on how to fix it. Yet, being a PC user, I don't quite understand how I can tackle the problem on Android. Basically I have 150 MB of data monthly +500 more, but the problem is that those 500 can only be used in Opera Mini (which I hate) and I use max 50 of them. Basically I pay for something that I don't use. My question to the android gurus here is how do I rout all the traffic through opera mini so that I can use those 500 megs however I want?

I'm a bit in over my head with networking issues at the moment. Device 1: raspberry pi running transmission-daemon and openVPN client connecting to PIA servers. Local IP - 192.168.1.134 Device 2: pfSense box running an openVPN server. VPN traffic binds to 192.168.69.* Device 3: external device, successfully connected to device 2's openVPN server with a local IP of 192.168.69.6 The transmission service running on device 1 has a web GUI accessible at port 9091. The issue is that any device (connected virtually to my local network or not) that is NOT on the 192.168.1.* segment is able to ping device 1, but not access the web GUI on port 9091. I've narrowed things down, and it seems to be solely an issue with what device 1 treats as "local" traffic that doesn't need to be routed through the VPN. I've tried to use this in my openvpn config file, but things still don't work: route add 192.168.69.0 mask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.134" My complete openvpn config file at the moment: client dev tun proto udp remote us-east.privateinternetaccess.com 1194 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca ca.crt tls-client remote-cert-tls server auth-user-pass login.conf comp-lzo verb 1 reneg-sec 0 crl-verify crl.pem auth-nocache I've also verified that device 3, when connected to the openVPN server of device 2, is able to connect to device 1's web GUI with no problem but only when I disable device 1's VPN client to PIA. Therefore, something about the VPN configuration on device 1 is denying traffic from anything that doesn't share a LAN segment with device 1 (on 191.168.1.*). Any ideas I could try?

Hey people, So I'm trying to find the best software for a home network firewall etc. Current contenders: Pfsense Sophos UTM Sophos XG OPENSense ClearOS I cant seem to find any documentation which says which one is the best, I like the features of Pfsense but it just seems like the web ui is from the 90's and I dont like supporting OPENSense since they blatantly ripped of pfsense and called it their own. I've recently been researching on a way to prevent potential security threats from entering my home network (such as viruses hanging out in my routers firmware), and found that many home network routers are not made with very secure firmware. I'm looking to buy a new router, and would like to get a router that is very secure, but also doesn't cost much more than $200 (preferably cheaper). Are there ANY home network routers that have at least decent security, that will keep my devices relatively safe, or should I go for a business router? Also just a side note, I don't need a router with a tremendous amount of range, my house is fairly small, if you have any recommendations please let me know! Thanks!

Hello everyone I have a question, but prior to it you should all get some input data. Currently my internet connection is via USB modem with SIM card in it (that is 3G network with 20GB limit per month). Only one PC is accessing internet, so it's fine, or at least it used to be - I'm getting a smartphone, and I want wi-fi all around the house. Before you ask: No, there's no option I can get regular, wired internet connection to my house. There just isn't. I was thinking, that i could plug my existing setup to some wireless router via RJ-45, enable 802.11 n, and route all wireless traffic back to main PC, to USB modem. Will this work? Could I make it cleaner? I mean there are some routers that work with 3G networks, right? Could I just get the damn SIM into router, so it can access the interwebz directly from there? That way wi-fi would work all the time, not only when Main PC is on. Also, if router has a USB port, could i plug my modem in there? Or my external HDD and make something like NAS? I'm asking, because I don't have a router yet, and I want some of my questions answered before I spend any money. Every suggestion is welcome. Thanks in advance.
