  1. Hi, I'm building a new computer, and I'm deciding on the GPU to get. I have to choose between the R9 280(X) or the GTX 770. I know the 770 is better, but there's a catch. I was told my existing monitor, the Dell E176FPc, has a maximum frame rate of 60 FPS. It only accepts VGA-in, so I have to buy a GPU with a DVI-I out to use a DVI to VGA adapter, that's why I cannot get the R9 290. So, I have to choose between getting the GTX 770 and reusing my monitor which can potentially ''bottleneck'' the GPU or the 280(X) along with a new monitor. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  2. Is this a bad temp for a r9 280. Also everything seems to be running fine and yet i dont think i am getting the fps numbers that i should be. Also i just opened firestrike and right when i did both my monitors came up saying that i had no connection and so i had to restart my pc.
  3. Hey guys, I just got a Sapphire R9 280 Dual-X OC and I'm looking for some mild overclocking advise as there isn't a lot specific for this card on the web (it's all about the 280X, the glory hog). I'm just using the overdrive utility and I have it at 1Ghz core with 10% power limit. Temps don't go past the 67-68 Celsius mark. How much further do you guys think I can safely push it?
  4. First off I'd like to say hi as this is my first post on the forum (Other than a few contest entries in the past(. I've been a LTT view for a few months now and have lurked around the forum for a while but never really got involved so here's my first crack at it. Reasoning for build I'm coming off a a cheap HP laptop that runs an AMD CPU that ran at more that 95 degrees before I tried ripping the motherboard out to try an clean the heat sink out. Location Location Location I live in Canada and have both an NCIX and Canada Computers in my area so, I would prefer to buy local to save on shipping, but wouldn't mind too much about buying online from trusted sites like Tiger Direct, Newegg, or Amazon Budget I want to aim for under $800 but will cap out at $900, so I will need some help trying to reduce costs of what I had in mind. Peripherals and Monitors Yes, I`m including the monitor in the budget- more on the monitor later I don`t need an OS I I already have Windows 7 and will be reusing an the SSD in my laptop In terms of a keyboard, I will include in the budget but...I have a cheap wireless Logitech key board but have been on the market for a mechanical one and have been eyeing the Logitech g710+ so any opinions on it would be nice , The main reason I `m interested in it is because of the dedicated media keys, volume scroll wheel, white back light, G/ Macros keys and the Cherry MX Browns that have the tactile bump but are still reasonably quiet compares to the Blues. Uses I know the system I want to build is a bit overkill for the usual internet browsing,YouTube videos and games I play (Minecraft and Fifa cause that's all my current PC can handle) but I wan to get into more FPS games and content creating like video editing and music production. I also know that I pretty late in the mining game but I also want to take a crack at Litecoin mining to off set the costs of this build. So here's what I have come up with so far from my limited knowledge of YouTube videos PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/mRTQcf Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/mRTQcf/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($159.99 @ NCIX) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($31.98 @ Newegg Canada) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Canada Computers) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($88.79 @ DirectCanada) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $0.00) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($54.99 @ Canada Computers) Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 3GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($229.99 @ NCIX) Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ NCIX) Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($62.12 @ Amazon Canada) Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($16.79 @ DirectCanada) Monitor: AOC i2367Fh 60Hz 23.0" Monitor ($139.99 @ NCIX) Total: $914.62 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-08-03 08:52 EDT-0400 * Dsclaimer- most of the parts I picked out are currently on sale so the prices will be higher in a week from this post but I do plan on buying parts ASAP and start building within the next two weeks/ when I get all my parts Explanation CPU- Since I'll be trying to video edit on Adobe and play more CPU then GOU intensive games like Minecraft, I figured I should go the more but weaker cores route of AMD with the 8-core FX8320. However, to reduce the price, I may gothe 6-core fx 6300 route. And unless someone can convince me to drop an extra $100 on my CPU to get the i5 4690/ 4690k, I'll probabbly stick to AMD and away from Intel. CPU Cooler- Since I may OC in the future and knowing the AMD CPUs run hot, I figured I would go with affordabble and popular Cooler Master 212 Evo MOBO- This is probbably what I need the most help with as I know close to nothing about which MOBO to choose... I basically relied on PCpartPicker to find a realtively cheap board that is comparable with the FX 8320 which I believe has a AM3+ socket. And from reading this sub forum, I think I want to also stay away from the cheaper ASRock boards too. So the only really request from the MOBO I have is compatibility with my CPU and case and I guess decent on board sound and USB 3.0 4 Ram slots so that I can upgrade to 16gb of Ram later RAM- I'll basically buy the cheapest 2x 4gb set of 1600 mhz ram as dual channel is faster than a single stick of 8gb ram, unless I can find a really good deal as they do seem a bit cheaper. However I would like to know which brand of RAM I should trust should I find a deal, I think Kingston's HyperX fury or older blu lines, G skill's Ripjaw, and Adata's XPG seem legit, Corsair's Vengence is usually more expensive. But how are crucial's ballistic because I see Austin Evens use it a lot in his build guides, and Mushkin? SSD- I'll be reusing the Samasung SSD I used to upgrade my laptop a few years a ago and chucking the stock one back in, but I will the SDD and OS loaded on it work if I just plug and play into my new system? Will the my new MOBO need to set up some sort of new settings from its BIOS? HDD- I needed at least 1TB of storge so I figured that the cheaper Seagate Baracuda is a better option that the WD blue or Black that costs more GPU- The fun part!- There are a few r9 280s on sale for only 20-30 bucks more than an r9 270x so I went for the beefer 3gb of vram 280s. However I'm crossed up between Gigabyte's Windforce card and Sapphire's Dual X Card as they are on sale for the same price. I think out of the two brands most people Sapphire but although Gigabyte's Windfoce I beieve is louder, comes with frees games (the AMD never settle Gold bundle). So which card? Case- Unless there are better options, I think I stay with an ATX case. The only main requirement is that the case can't exceed 17 inches in height as anything tall won't fit under my old school PC desk that has a special spot for the PC tower. I figure'd that Corsair's more open design will be easier for a first timer like me to build in, and I like the simplistic look, so I went for th 200r (and it's pretty cheap for a Corsair case) PSU- PC Part Picker rated my system for drawing 439W so I figured a 500W supply would be enough. My question is other than better cable management, does a modular supply deliver better efficiency since there are less or no loose and unwired cables in the case? I think this is one of places I can probably save a bit if I go for a non modular supply like EVGA one on sale at NCIX ODD- I'm just old school and could use a disk drive Monitor- The one I chose is what I could find to be the cheapest 1080p IPS display with at least 1 HDMI port for a future PS4 I might hook up to, and it "frameless", but is AOC a trusted brand? If not can you guys recommend another 1080p IPS monitor with at least 1 HDMI port? Thanks in advance for reading this wall of text and for time and help

    R9 280

    look what i found http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2405/radeon-r9-280.html
  6. I am on a pretty tight budget and I would like to, in the near future (most likely after Ryzen+) upgrade my PC, I'm already keeping an eye out for a used R9 280, the Asus Strix OC, however I was wondering if a CX650 would be a good enough power supply to run this card, because it fits right in my budget and can't really go for a TX. Regardless, I would also like to know what alternatives to the CX/TX from other brands I have (for about the same quality).
  7. So I'm planning on upgrading almost my entire PC. I live in Stockholm, Sweden, so prices are often much higher than, for example, in the US. The parts I'm planning on upgrading are mobo, cpu, ram and ssd. I don't often play very demanding games, but I would like to have something that can handle AAA-games on lower settings maybe. But the main reason I'm upgrading us that my harddrive is very slow, old and full, my motherboard only supports DDR2 memory, which I only have 4GB of, and my computer is feeling overall slow, both in games (I belive it's the ram) and normal use. My old PC: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz Sapphire r9 280 dual-x 3GB GDDR5 Old harddrive (don't care to look up the name) 2*2GB DDR2 1066 MHz ram Asus P5Q Rev. 1.03g Cooler Master Real Power M520 520w Antec nine hundred My planned PC: AMD FX-6300 @ 3.5 GHz Intel 535 Series 240GB SSD 2 * HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1866 MHz ram Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P I'm keeping the GPU, PSU and case. According to partpicker these should be compatible, only that the MOBO seem to need a BIOS update to work with any am3+ CPU. Since I have some pretty nice deals, the whole upgrade would cost about 335 usd, 293 euro. I don't have a real budget, but I'm not going to spend much more than this upgrade would cost. I'm wondering if any these parts have been known to be bad, if the parts work nicely together and if there is something I should change. This is my first time posting, so I don't now if I should create a new thread, but I also wonder if there's any way to upgrade my windows 8 to 10 while still swaping the motherboard and storage like I'm planning to do. Thanks in advance!

    r9 280 at 2560 x 1080

Hello can the r9 280 ( https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/R9280DC2T3GD5/ ) handle gaming at 2560 x 1080? How is the fps number? thank you
  9. Hi. I searched google but didn't find anything. Are there any custom drivers for r9 280/290/380/390 to work with windows xp 32bit? Don't waste time and energy to tell me wtf are you doing with windows xp in 2017 and the awnser is retro gaming. It is possible to make gtx 970-TitanXM working with xp by just adding their name in the driver's notepad. Is it possible to do the same thingwith amd gpus as well? Keep in mind that r9 270x works with xp so it is possible.
  10. Hello, A few days back my computer screen started glitching out. Not every single one of the monitors does what the video shows below. Only 2 of the 3 displays do this. The display on the left is connected to the graphics card with a displayport to vga adapter with the displayport going into the back of the card, the middle monitor is connected to the graphics card over a dvi to HDMI cable, with the HDMI going into the back of the card, and the one on the right is connected to the graphics card with a vga to DVI adapter with the DVI end plugged in the graphics card. R9 280 vs rx 470

Hello, is it worth upgrading from asus r9 280 to Sapphire Nitro+ Rx 470? links to gpu: https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/R9280DC2T3GD5/specifications/ http://sapphirenitro.sapphiretech.com/en/470-4.html#specifications
  12. Ok so i played all day long and everything was going fine until my screen starting getting blue stripes with some red letter in it ( a letter that i had never seen before) then there came green stripes, well i coulden't really play anymore so i decided to go to bed. When i woke up the day after I tried starting my computer and the same thing happend until i while later when the screen just went black and i coulden't start. Is this because of overheating or something else? And if it is overheating then is there any way i can recover the card or should i just buy a new one?
  13. So i'm not sure if it happens often but the best thing happened to me this week. In the beginning of this month I was having problems with my GPU, an R9 280, and I brushed it aside until it died like two days after. That wasn't good. So I called MSI TWICE, and after being with them for almost three hours in total, I did the RMA process. (I'll talk about their customer support some other post) Well I did the RMA and waited for their emails like standard procedure and then when I got back from school I got an email from them and I felt blessed. I read the email and it said they couldn't find my model to replace so they wanted to know if I could do a swap. I saw what they wanted swap and I was happy and excited. I couldn't believe that they wanted to swap my 280 with a R9 390. I answered yes and they sent it to me. I got the GPU on Tuesday and everything seems great. I love it! Thank our lord and savior GabeN, but in all seriousness I think I got lucky. Well that's it I just wanted to talk about it and brag a little because I found it weird and I never heard from anyone else who has done pc gaming that this has happened to them before. Thanks for reading!
  14. Hey guys, So today I figured out that my Sapphire Radeon R9 280, which is a PCIe 3.0 graphics card, is stuck on PCIe 2.0 16x. I discovered this in the menu of the AMD Crimson software. So I went into the Gigabyte DualUEFI BIOS and I went into the GFX Configuration in the Peripherals section of the BIOS. Does this mean anything? Am I supposed to have another option selected here? After I looked here, I went to the Miscellaneous section of the M.I.T. menu and found this: There was no Gen3 option available? Does anybody know how to fix this?
  15. So after about 3 weeks of waiting for GPU to be delivered to me, after my Gigabyte windforce HD 7950 died, I got a R9 280 as my "replacement". It is an Asus direct CU II version, now I have only one question. As the GPU seems to be brand new, the box hasn't been opened, I was wondering if I should sell it. I could get quite large amount off a GTX 970 if I did that. About 250€ is the lowest price for a new 280 from what I have seen. Would it make sense to sell the replacement now, or should I just wait until this one also dies, then buy something? I know that is the most reasonable choice, I just want to know if being unreasonable is any good in controlled amounts.
  16. Both the 7870 and 7950 are HIS's brand with one fan...so might not be that quiet, and might run hot....but their prices are too low! There is no beating the 7870 Ghz edition in its price range! If you opt for the larger $129 7950, you might want to consider a gtx 670....but good luck finding a new one ;p
  17. Hello, I am looking into building a new system, and was wondering whether the extra performance was worth the extra cost of getting an R9 290 over an R9 280. Getting the 280 would let me put my build under $1000, and save me over 100 USD. Any input is appreciated.
  18. Hey guys, I'm planning this build soon, and I'm also planning on overclocking the CPU and maybe the GPU. I'm concerned about whether the PSU will have enough power to manage the overclocked build. I originally had a 500W PSU and was told to upgrade to 600W. I was then told to upgrade to a 650W. I don't know what to believe any more. What do you guys think? I'm planning on overclocking the CPU as much as my cooler will allow, and I may overclock the GPU aswell if the stock temps are low enough. Do I have enough power? 19. I've Looked all over the internet and I have not been able to find an answer. Is there a Water block that will work on a Gigabyte windforce r9 280 (non x)? (doesn't have to be full coverage or anything like that) (i'm not talking about the all in one coolers either) Some people say a 7950 water block will work but i'm not sure because gigabyte uses custom PCBs
  20. Hello everyone. So I recently got the Sapphire Radeon R9 280 and am waiting to get a few cables I need for it. In the mean time I thought I'd ask the question if my setup will be enough for Star Citizen My build: AMD A-10 6800k @ 4.1GHz Non-OC'd Sapphire Radeon R9 280 OC Edition - No additional overclocking Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-D3H 1x120mm front fan + 1x80mm exhaust fan Comment below what you think I can get out of Star Citizen in graphics settings and resolution. Thanks!
  21. Introduction: I got this card back in September 2014 as a replacement for my R9 280 dual x OC from sapphire (i got that for 200 EURO and three free games, so I actually payed around 150EURO). At that time, I was building a budget pc, I got an i5 2500k and a Z68 board for 170 euro and the R9 280 was the card with the best price/performance ratio in the market (it was around 20 EURO cheaper than a gtx 760 in my area, but it was and still is faster). Ou, well I should say, that I did not pay more than 560 EURO for my pc. Specs: Process technology: 28nm Core clock: 950MHz, Boost clock: 1072MHz Memory Clock: 5000MHz Memory Size: 3072MB Memory Type: GDDR5 Power requirement: 6-pin + 8-pin. I/O: DVI-I, 2x Mini display port, HDMI. Dual BIOS Switch. Photos: The card looks pretty big, bud I didn´t have any problems fitting it into my very (very) small case. It uses a reference PCB (yeah, it is black, not blue!!! But i don´t really care about the PCB color) so no fancy VRM and PCB design. Test rig: CPU: intel core i5 2500K oc @ 4,2GHz. CPU COOLER: cooler master TX3 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA Z68MA D2H-B3 RAM: 2X Kingston 1333MHz 4GB. HDD: western digital caviar blue 1tb 7200rpm PSU: seasonic 600W 80% Bronze Benchmarks. Just a reminder, I have used different clock speed to simulate the reference hd 7950, the reference r9 280. my factory overclocked version and a high overclock (it is not my highest overclock, but it is a good achievable overclock for most people). Unigine Valley (ultra preset, 4x AA) Score. FPS. Tomb Raider (ULTRA + tressfx 1 FXAA): Hitman Absolution (ULTRA + SSAA): Metro Last Light (ULTRA + SSAA): Assassin's creed Unity (ultra preset, high shadows + FXAA): The Witcher 3 (Mostly ULTRA, no Hairworks, Water, shadows and foliage at high, those are the settings, I've used to play the game for more than 147 hours) Cooling: The temperatures never exceed 75° (mostly 72) and the fan never went above 65%. I must say, in comparisson to my previous dual x cooler, the windforce one is not as effective, but it's not as loud. Conclusion: In my opinion, the R9 280 is still a very potent GPU with nice performance, but if i had to buy a new card, I would go with a R9 380 with 4GB of VRAM and overclock it to somewhere around 1100MHz. At that speed, you should get around 15% more performance, at a much lover power consumption. You might have seen, that I used a special overclock for the Unigine valley benchmark (1150 core and 6000 VRAM) and we observed a increase in performance, I would like to go deeper on this topic, because, there had been rumors, that the GCN 1.0 amd 1.1 are very bandwidth dependant (this problem has been solved by the GCN 1.2 and it's data compresion).
  22. I am looking at buying a new GPU to replace my 2 GTS 450s. I am interested in the R9 280. Newegg has a deal on the XFX R9 280 for $150. Should I grab one of these or wait for the R9 380? In this article (http://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-300-series-pricing-confirmed-aggressive/) it says that the R9 380 4GB will be $235. In the future I plan to buy a 4K monitor. Should I wait? Thanks!
  23. hy guys just wonering if i whould be better of buying an r9 290x or buying 2 r9 280s and using them in sli as the price diffrence is only around £25 to £ 40 i am looking to run game like skyrim and fallout in eyefinity whith one 1080p monitor and 2 720p monitors or if you think there is a better option for around £250 i know this is a low bugget but i am plaing to buy used thanks for any help
  24. Hey I was wondering about my new build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Private_Ceg/saved/s3bypg and im thinking about getting an r9 280 or the gtx 960 when it comes out and im wondering how future proof it will be? I will be using it for gaming and only in 1080p for now (at least 3 years).
  25. So I'm pairing a r9 280 with the 4440 and I'm going to be using a 900p monitor and I know it will run some games 60fps 1080p will I be able to max out pretty much anything at 60fps 900p with the r9 280? EDIT:also what will the price tag for the 380x be? north of $200?
