The area I have to put it in is ~51 inches long, and 17 1/2 inches tall, and 11 inches deep ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). My GPU is a GTX 970 STRIX (2DVI, 1 Displayport, 1 HDMI (taken by tv). I run LinuxMint17.2r Check it: So my needs are as follows: - Fast (under 6ms response) - EZ on the eyes (I'm a programmer on a TN and have eye problems, what can I say?) - High Refresh Rate - A little better than 1080p, pls? - Good-ish color I was thinking of a curved monitor (like dem LGs), but I've been impressed by some samsungs lately. I'd like to make good use of the space I have. My monitor has a bigger bezel than an apple product right now, so it's not gonna line up. Of course I need it to be as Linux Friendly as it gets. This is pretty easy, but stuff like GSync is hard to get working on Linux, and unless you think Nvidia will start giving a shit people use Linux -- hahaha nvm. I have the XB240H, and though it did help me in the windows gaming days of yor (last year), it's been more of a hassle than a commodity. Color is yuck, it is nothing close to easy on the eyes! and its glossy AF. Freesync Monitors are fine for me, because either nvidia will catch on to the freesync thing (hahaha prolly not), or AMD will step up their Linux driver game to sell and make big bux (more likely than nvidia doing something not-proprietary). Anyways, love this forum (that includes you, Greg.) thanks for the help. Have any questions? JUST ASK ALREADY!! BUDGET: UNDER 1000 USD

Hi! I need help to know what does my build need for developing applications like 2D games and utility apps. My main questions are: Will Android Studio/Unity benefit from more cores? Like a AMD FM 8350 or just go with a intel core i5-4460. Will I need a lot of RAM for Android Studio/Unity? Is 8 GB enough RAM? Any help with knowing which hardware I need for what. I would like to do with help. Thank you! also any recommended build or components will help. Have a great day!

Google has posted their own guide to becoming a successful Software Engineer. The guide is a suggested path for University students to develop their skills but personally I don't see why someone younger couldn't do it if they have the dedication to accomplish the goal. Anyway, they do note that you should be aware of the following before/when using the guide: I think its great that Google has done this so people know what the industry wants. Though, of course, a lot of other companies want other things from you so just because Google suggests C++, Java or Python as an object oriented programming language to study, doesn't mean all companies use these. (Just a small tip, but hey those three are very big so what do I know ) THE GUIDE HERE: https://www.google.com/about/careers/students/guide-to-technical-development.html NOTE: I just noticed that some links lead to sites like Udacity which needs a subscription to use it. (Though, Udacity, I believe offers a free version of their service but without help from coaches and you do not receive certificates that you've completed things etc. But they do offer a 14 day free trial on the full version.) Just thought I'd point it out. Though, you can still use the guide from Google and the links that needs payment, find something else with the same content. Or pay if you really want that content of course!

Hey, I am new to the forum and I am seeking some advice. I currently am running an Intel Core i5 4690k in my computer. I am looking for an upgrade and I am a bit stuck at choosing a CPU. I will be primarily using the machine to do programming and running vms and then just doing every day task, e.g Browsing the internet and doing emails. Thanks if anyone can help!

I've decided to upgrade to X99 with a 5820k but I'am not sure on which mobo/RAM to get. I would preferable like to get a motherboard and ram for about $800 CAD and I need at least 32GB's of RAM. I am flexible on price but I would still like to keep it on the cheaper end. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Canada BTW.

Have been watching and undertaking online Java tutorials through various sites, yet still feel like I've only scuffed off the shell of a broader topic. Does anyone have any recommendations for good up to date books/eBooks based around the language? Thanks in advanced!

Hey so I'm looking for a very portable laptop for programming in college. Maximum budget is around €1000 (~$1150). I'd like it to be light and thin so it's easy to carry around. I would also like to do some casual gaming and I also make games in Unity so graphics would be great. Anyway thing is I pretty much exclusively used desktop PCs until now so I'm way behind on laptop's technology these days . What would be your recommendations?

So i have always used my school computer for coding, but now they want it back.. so i need to get a laptop myself my budget is $800 - $1000. Any suggestions?

So we're asked to do a reporting on AI Programming Languages and I'm having a hard time since most of the well-known probabilistic or statistical languages languages for AI has been taken already by other groups. I'm thinking on using Scala just for this matter and I can't seem to answer the guideline questions for the reporting: Discuss the relation of this language to AI Applications. Sample program that will prove that the language is for Artificial Intelligence(e.g. pattern matching, natural language processing, reasoning, etc.) I've been googling everywhere about the applications and I've only found a few but not helpful in my case. Scala seems to be just the same as the other high-level languages. I'm fluent with C++ and Python and I can somewhat do AI with it but the length of code is intimidating and it's not meant for AI which is what I also see for Scala. Still confused why some sites recommend Scala for AI. Can someone enlighten me on Scala for AI Applications? or can you suggest other AI Languages aside from these picked languages by other groups? (sorted alphabetically for convenience) AIML Curry Clean Escher Haskell LISP Emacs Mercury Miranda Prolog Python Rebol Racket Scheme SISAL Xlisp I don't have much knowledge on this field since I'm so focused at studying security, computer networks and EH stuffs. I've made some bots using Python but not as smart as what our professor want our "AI" program to be. Right now, I just need a language that is easy or at least fast to learn and Scala seems to get my attention because of some site feedbacks but I still can't find answers for the guideline questions if I use Scala. Enlighten me AI senpais.

I am interested in tinkering with Game Design. I have an idea that I want to put into game form but I do not know much about programming. So, I am looking for a simple engine that will look good graphic wise and has flexibility to make a polished working game. My question is, what Engine should I try and start my game on? I am looking for the simplest and most features included engine. Thanks!

Me and a few of my friends have been making game for the *Redacted* Software design competition and this year we were supposed to make a tetris-esqe game. The game is made in C# and the deadish XNA framework, we didn't used Monogame for the comp. as it's still buggy and we didn't want to lose points for something outside of our control. Everything in the game programming wise, including StarByte, sounds, and sprites were all made by us. At this point we've pretty much finished it up with only a few UI, HUD, and sound improvements (Also rebindable keys still need to be enabled... Almost forgot). So I was wondering if some of you want to try it out and help point out any bugs here and there, since we've gone blind to a lot of it after playing so much. EDIT: Looks like it doesn't run on the preview of Windows 10 so be for warned, also the game will only work on Windows machines currently until we port over to MonoGame, after we should gain Linux & Mac support, sorry for any incovience as this is still under active development. Here are a few screenshots: Main Menu Tutorial Level Level 3 There is a basic custom level system in the game that requires you to make a simple .dat file, so if you'd like you can make your own levels and even share them with us in the thread! Hello, I am in the process of choosing my GCSE option, which for anyone out of the UK, is basically where you choose normally four subjects to look take into futher details (and you end up dropping most others) I will include a list of IT / Technical based options from which I can choose from and which I am thinking about doing. Options from which I can choose from which are electronic based: Computer Science ICT Engineering Product Design They are the one which are generally computer based. I was thinking about choosing the following subjects on top of Math and English Computer Science Business Studies (GCSE) History or Geography Triple Science ( Biology, Physics and Chemistry ) It may be worth noting that I am in the top class for Maths and the second to top class for Science if that makes any difference... Thanks in advance, ~ Harry

Hello, I am trying to find a book that can teach me the basics of Python and then move onto teaching me more advanced things. I know that there are many YouTube videos out there ( which I will be watching ) but I like the idea of having a book that I can quickly refer to. I love the HTML and CSS book by Jon Duckett/ Thanks in advance, ~ Harry EDIT - I am currently learning Python 2.7.2

Hello guys, I'm looking for a cheap laptop i'm going to use for work as a web developer, the programs i will be running all the time are: -Ubuntu 14.x -PhpStorm 8 (a code editor, pretty heavy) -A small virtual machine running homestead (a linux distribution for developement) -A web browser I saw 2 laptops from Acer which have the following specs: One: -Celeron N2830 -4 GB RAM -500gb 5400rpm Hitachi Hard disk -15" screen -HD resolution -275€ price Two: -I3 4030U -4 GB RAM -500gb 5400rpm Hitachi Hard disk -15" screen -HD resolution -390€ price So the main difference is basically the CPU and the price, i'm not sure if the Celeron can run PHPStorm, has anyone ever tried it and can confirm it works? My brother has a CPU similar to the Celeron and PHPStorm was really laggy on his PC, but he has windows and just 2GB ram, so that may be the cause. Also i've already got a 120GB SSD laying around that i'll use instead of the 5400rpm HDD If anyone has other suggestions, possibly under 400€ feel free to tell me! I'm from Italy so prices are higher than normal for many things. Thanks!

Howdy y'all, I'm a 22 year old sysadmin trying to get into programming. On a day-to-day basis I have to automate tasks through a script editor that is integrated to our RMM software. I'm not sure what the language is (probably an overlay of Ruby) but I understand the core premise of scripting languages at least - for my needs, it's all sequential and relies on nested if statements. So for example, I start a script like this: Here's a very basic example of a type of script that I make: If: 'C:\Program\File1' exists Then: 1. Download Zip1.zip 2. Download Unzip.exe 3. Unzip.exe Zip1.zip 4. Run File2.msi /q 5. Gpupdate.exe /force Else: 1. Download File1 2. Download Zip1.zip 3. Download Unzip.exe 4. Unzip.exe Zip1.zip 5. Run File2.msi /q 6. Gpupdate.exe /force My question is this: how do you get into actual programming? I'm interested in learning how to program to better understand why what I do on a command line makes sense. Long-term goals would be learning SQL due to necessary administration of SQL applications - but other than that I can't figure out which language to try to learn/how to learn it/why learn that language over any other. I've logged 2 hours on CodeAcademy with Python (chose that since it's the code behind Dropbox, and it seemed cool) but I was unable to see the bigger picture - I can't see where my code transforms from line of commands to an actual executable. What would you guys recommend? Thanks for reading, and any input would be appreciated!
