1. Budget - £600 / $775 2. Aim / Upgrade - building a hackintosh to replace my dying imac. The idea is that the system will be better then the current iMac cheapest iMac specs and be upgradable overtime when money allows. I shall be using it for web / email / media streaming and my design work. So photoshop, illustrator etc. Also wanting to get into video editing and 3D modeling / printing. 3. Monitors Plan on running two monitors maybe a 3rd in the future. 4. Peripherals Keyboard.... Possibly Montior - Already got one but would like to the same and need a mounting system for them. Will be using sites such as eBay / amazon / ebuyer.co.uk for my purchasing my parts ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hopefully my build will make sense I've copied and pasted it from a thread on another forum. So I've not built a pc in a long time!! I think it was 15 years ago since my last build! I built myself a pc as I could make it better spec and for half the price of a mac at the time. Then throughout the years I gradually moved to apple, got myself a G4 power book (which is still going strong!) and an iMac. My reason for this build is i need a new mac due to my iMac being on its last legs and apple is now a rip off! Only good thing about them is the OS and I don't have £1000 spare. So I'm building a Hackintosh on a budget that will hopefully cost half the price of the basic spec iMac and be alot better! ------------------------------------------------------------- iMac Spec - www.apple.com/uk 21.5-inch iMac - Item Price: £1,049.00 Hardware; 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz 8GB 1867MHz LPDDR3 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm Intel HD Graphics 6000 Magic Mouse 2 Magic Keyboard (British) & Users Guide (English) Accessory Kit ------ I've been using tonymacx86.com to help with the right configuration of parts to build the hackintosh. My new Hackintosh Spec (Hopefully) Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P Socket LGA1151 HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio Motherboard £112.12 Intel Core i5 6600 3.3GHz Socket 1151 6MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor £214.98 Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti 4GB GDDR5 Dual-link DVI HDMI PCI-E Grpahics Card £118.20 Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 DRAM 2133MHz C13 Memory Kit - Red65.97 Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5inch SSD £88.18 Corsair Carbide 300R Case with Window £72.98 Corsair VS Series 550 Watt VS550 Power Supply £38.49 Edimax Gigabit PCIe Network Card £9.68 LG Super Multi Blue Internal 14x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH14NS40 £58.22 Total: £778.82 ALL PRICES / PARTS SOURCED FROM EBUYER.COM - this is just a guide for now, parts need changing in places - Im wanting to get the build cost under 600 Including 2 monitors. Now the under £600 MIGHT BE A CHALLENGE.... BUT I LOVE A CHALLENGE!! And Im not going to get the parts right on first go

SOURCE Handbrake their official download for mac was infected with malware, verify your checksums. If you've downloaded handbrake between 2 may and 6 may you have a 50% chance of it having a trojan of the OSX.PROTON verity embedded. Updates trough integrated application update scripts are not affected since they don't install if the download doesn't pass the checksum, unless you ran a version from before v0.10.5. file: Handbrake.dmg SHA1: 0935a43ca90c6c419a49e4f8f1d75e68cd70b274 SHA256: 013623e5e50449bbdf6943549d8224a122aa6c42bd3300a1bd2b743b01ae6793 To quickly see if you're infected, check if you have a process called "Activity_agent". According to the handbrake team themselves its 100% indicative of if you're infected or not. What the malware actually tries to do is steal all your passwords, so you will have to change all passwords stored in your OSX keychain, and any other password storage if you want to be thorough. How do you remove this malware? It appears to be pretty easy, see the quote below. They also state that they will rebuild their download server completely from scratch so downloads will be slower and older versions of handbrake won't be available for download. This will cost time so there will be longer than expected downtime because of this, sounds like possibly something nasty is going on there server-side. Personally i think browser should get integrated checksum checkers already, with them being able to provide a url for where to fetch the checksum to the browser manufacturer so they can find it hassle free. Wouldn't make it 100% secure but its better than people not doing it because humans are lazy fucks. TL;DR quote:

I have built my own #hackintosh using Intel NUC NUC5I3RYK with 16 gigs LDDR3 RAM from Intel and Samsung 960 Pro NVME SSD and it works great except for the Wi-Fi lol. But it was something I wanted to tryout. I bought it on Craigslist for just 100 bucks with Liteon SATA SSD and licensed Windows Pro and threw my own Samsung SSD in M.2 NVME slot and now run Mac on that SSD and Windows on Liteon SSD.

I am wondering if i could upgrade the SSD in my late 13, 13" MB pro, i know it uses a m.2 SSD, but will it support an NVMe (and the speed that comes with it) or will it just run normal ssd speeds, like the one im using right now? If this is the case, what SSD's will the macbook support?

Hi everyone. I have here an older macbook pro 13 inch. I can not access the normal operating system because something has been corrupted. Is there a way to create bootable OSX installation media without having access to a functioning Mac? I should also mention it is too old to install MacOS Sierra on it. I have looked tirelessly and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys. I am planning on building a hackintosh for video editing&VFX and photo editing(no 3d). I don't care too much for gaming... I want the hackintosh for FCPX and also adobe premiere pro and after effects. FCPX should be my main one but I will spend a lot of time in Premiere as well I think if it turns out to be more reliable than it was before... Can someone help me put together a good part list? That would be really great. Also, it would be great if someone could tell me about the process of hackintoshing. Like whether I should use clover/multibeast.ect, cause im really confused. My budget is around 600USD. Max 650USD. I heard that for final cut pro, AMD GPUs would be better, and for premiere, Nvidia would be better because of CUDA. If I go with and Nvidia card, does anyone know how to tweak the card/tweak FCPX to use CUDA better for better performance? Thanks!

Hi everybody. I am in desperate need of help as I am selling my 2012 Macbook Pro. I had already wiped the hdd and had prepared an install dvd with os x lion (being imo the least intensive and still modern looking osx variant). I tested the dvd by booting the mac to it once and saw it worked perfectly. After wiping the HDD however, the mac will no longer boot to the dvd. It shows the apple logo and the spinning grey ball. It will stay like this forever until i force it to shut down. I don't understand why it does this. The Hitachi drive in the mac has 1 large empty partition with the mac os extended (journaled) format. I can't install Lion from the web as i have had to delete the email linked to the itunes account on which I purchased the os. Really a bummer. I have tried doing the same with the dmg file on a guid partitioned usb to get the same result again. Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, I'm really lost with the whole ProRes on windows thing. I know I won't get native encoding on apps such as Media Encoder or DaVinci Resolve so I'm working on finding workarounds. Some people suggested me that I should install OSX on a separate SSD in my PC so I can use the same machine to Export my projects in ProRes (Not that I personally want to... But the client... Well the old story...) MY QUESTION IS: Will I able to install OSX on my system? I've been researching this and I'm having a hard time making sure. Some people say there is no driver support for the new pascal architecture and others say it should work just fine. Can anybody help me out? MB: Asus X99 A-II x2 Crucial 1TB SSD CPU: Intel i7 5820K GPU: ASUS Strix GTX 1070 (Pascal) RAM: 32GB DDR4 Memory And a good PSU. What OS should I install? Is there another good option to get ProRes encoding on windows? I Know about Cinec and Plin, but if I have to manually convert already exported files I will use my old MacBook... All input will be appreciated! Merci!

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro i5 for school and want to improve its speed. I've already spent alot to buy it and dont want to invest another $60 on an ssd. I have a 320gb laptop hdd and want to Raid 0 the drives to increase performance. The original drive is 500 gb, is it possible to make a 320gb volume on the 500gb hdd so that it can be compatible for Raid? if not, is it possible to make a volume on the inner most part of the drive to increase speed?

Now that my PC can basically do all the things I want it to, I want to try out Apple's Operating system. I really like the idea of a powerful desktop for gaming and a very sleek, minimalist, and "walled garden" experience for writing and business applications. To that end, I've found a 15" Macbook Pro i5 for $300. I believe it has a dual core 520 that boosts to 3.1, 8gb ddr3, and 500 hdd. Honestly, the only thing I want to replace is the HDD and maybe battery and I think this device will be able to navigate the OS very smoothly. Since I've heard many people say that newer Macbook Pros are just thinner, slightly more powerful, do you think I made a wise choice?

Hi everyone! I'm new to using NASes for storing all of my stuff, and I'm wondering if what I have is good enough to fit my needs, or if you have any other suggestions. Here's what I currently have: Dell Precision T3500, 2.67GHz Intel Xeon W3520, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD (currently lacking an OS) NetApp DS4243 Storage Array w/ two IOM3 SAS Controllers (currently empty) PCIe LSI Logic 9201-16e SAS Controller (for Precision) I am planning on filling up my DS4243 with SATA 3TB WD Reds and have them in a ZFS-formatted RAID6 array. The DS4243 will be attached to the Dell Precision using an SFF-8088 cable. I'd also like to have this NAS be an at-home server (not broadcasted out online for people outside my network to connect to) that I can connect (via Ethernet) to my Mac. Everything connecting to this server will be a Mac. Thus, I'd like to use AFP to connect to it. I'm not sure what OS I should use with it, though. I was thinking on using Ubuntu Server, but I've heard good things about FreeNAS and unRaid too. So, now for the questions. What OS would you suggest I use? Can I add drives as needed by simply popping in a new HDD into the storage array without needing to reinitialize? Is my current setup good enough for my needs? For me, capacity > speed. This will just be for file storage. Thanks for your input.

So i currently have a macbook pro as my daily and it has been for the past 5 years (not to mention the fact that before that I had been all apple for a really long time). And my goal is to run an OSX (el captain or sierra) VM on my new alienware 13 that I have coming in. The trick here is that I would like to find a way to take my current OSX with all of my apps and files and transfer it over to a virtual machine (willing to run any free or reasonably priced virtualization software such as virtualbox, vmware, hyper-v, etc...) I have read people trying to do this with time machine and then restoring from time machine which doesnt exactly seem to work all the time. Of course apple makes this really easy when you buy a macbook they have a tool to transfer everything over wifi to the new computer but that doesn't seem to work either. Any help would be awesome.

Hello there, So I am currently about to start restoring a mid 2009 A1181 MacBook from faulty and want to know how I can install Mac OS on it. It does not have an HDD so I decided to buy an SSD for it but I can't figure out how to run Mac OS on it without previously having a version of it already on the MacBook. I have not received the MacBook yet so I cannot test anything butttttt... Is someone able to tell me how to Install a fresh copy of Mac OS on it? - I have a Mac Mini if I need to use a restore drive in order to get the Macbook working (if need be) Thanks.

Hi there fellow comrades, so here is the problem. I have 500GB SSD in my Mac and I decided to divide it in half so that I can use windows on the other half. Long story short I got a new windows laptop and don't need windows on my Mac anymore. I managed to delete bootcamp but I have no idea how to merge it back, on windows its so much easier By the way I'm running OSX HIGH SIERRA BETA Please help.

Hi everyone, I am here looking for some advice on choosing a file system for my external drive. Let me explain my situation abbot first. My main computer is a MacBook Pro with an 1TB internal SSD. I've been storing my 500GB library on my internal SSD and I'm using Dropbox to backup my music library. Recently I decided to move my music library alongside with a lot of other stuff to an external drive and use CrashPlan to backup that external drive, and the first problem I encountered was the choice of the file system. Here's my understanding of my choices: HFS+: At first I thought HFS+ had to be super reliable being the default file system on Mac, but I've since read articles about HFS+ bit rot and it not being a good file system in general. Basically the more research I do on HFS+, the worse it seems. ExFAT: Again, this looked like a good choice at first, but I then read horror stories about files corrupting regularly on exFAT and how unreliable it is for hard drives since it's optimized for flash storage. So has anyone had good luck with exFAT? Is it really that unreliable? FAT32: I originally passed on it simply because of how old it is, and I thought newer stuff had to be better. But maybe it's not actually a bad choice? NTFS: From the research I did, NTFS seems like a very reliable tried-and-true file system, and I'm actually already paying for Tuxera NTFS. But he fact that NTFS is not being natively supported on Mac still bothers me a little. Am I worrying too much? So yeah, I think I'm kind of stuck. To me it looks like there is no good choice. Can anyone please give me some suggestions? Thanks!

Ok, let's try this again To mods: THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT HACKINTOSH HELP Looking for some drive mirroring software to move from a 128GB SSD to a 500GB SSD. I'm currently running a hackintosh, so obviously i can run windows software too, however THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR HELP ABOUT THAT. The problem i have, it none of the drive mirroring software i have tried can mirror HFS drives properly (HFS=Mac's file system), does anyone have any suggestions for a drive mirroring software that will mirror all 3 partitions correctly (EFI (Fat 32), Recovery (HFS) & Main SSD Partition (HFS) ) via a bootable CD, so i can restore it to a newly installed drive again via a bootable CD. There used to be a nice free one that i can't remember the name of and can't seem to find anymore! Ideal requirements would be: Free Fastish Ideally block by block copy Bootable CD (this one is a must) If mods still think this is about hackintosh help, it's not - think of it this way. i need a drive cloning boot cd for mac, as none of the windows ones mirror HFS properly. (also moved to better section this time) Thanks!

After running this macbook on powerchord only because of an broken battery i finaly decided to buy a new battery but now when it arrived it doesn't work correctly. The battery simply refuses to charge and says "Replace now, Not charging 8%". Things i've tried: SMC Reset PRAM Reset Booting into Linux Mint and it said "Charging - Fully charged 8%" (It wasn't charging) Unplugging AC while OS was on and it just simply died with no difference next boot. Macbok pro 2011 (I think) Battery: battery A1322 (I know it's compatible) (Same as the original broken one)

This thread is about why you love Apple's OSX. Why do you love it? Do you prefer it over Windows? What do you dislike? Do you find yourself all alone in an ocean of Windows or Linux, or do you find yourself with the majority of illuminated apple logos? Where could they improve? What could they bring back? What was your first Apple computer, where did you get it, how much did you buy it for, and what was it like when you first started it up? No we are not Apple fanatics, we are not silver metal casing and white illuminating logo lovers, we just prefer things a little.... well you will find out what the last word will be. My first apple product that I got was an old iMac. I don't remember the specs or year but it had the clear plastic all over it. I remember powering it on... wow. Plus it was free (it might have been stolen.... but who knows). The previous owner did not wipe the hdd. So a quick call to apple and $20 later I had some software on the way. I tell ya that was a awesome feeling. Installing the software and seeing all the animation was intoxicating. Windows could learn a thing or two from Apple. I hated to see it go, but $75 bucks wasn't too bad. My first purchased Apple computer was a 2012 Macbook Air 11 inch. I love this thing. I got for $400 from a classmate on the second semester of college. The feeling of powering it on and playing with updated software... ohhhh gives me a hard on. I love it because it is simple (took a little getting use to but with some homework I wasn't doing too bad). The OS doesn't take much resources like windows does. It is clean looking and I like that. Would I replace my Windows pc... nope. I love my Win. 7 pc. I will never let it go unless it's reached it's end like Win XP has. Software running of XP is impossible. I find myself to be in a mix of both windows and mac. I never see linux out in college. I don't have any hates just a few dislikes like how you have to go around your elbow to get to your thumb for certain tasks or finding things, or getting to a certain file or program or moving something. The command button is not placed in a good spot. Please share your experience.

OSX has a nice feature called content cache. Read about it here In houses with low bandwidth it is very helpful. One of the biggest problems it solves is the nightly backup. This is a common problem that when an apple user plugs in their phone to go to sleep, it saturates the upload line, killing the internet for the rest of the house. With content caching on, the backup actually goes through the cache server so it is possible to, through QoS or similar, limit the upload of the server itself. Thus if you have 3 apple devices trying to backup simultaneously, they'll all share the same server QoS bandwidth limit. So my issue: Apple specifically blocks Content Cache from running on a VM (They say it and I definitely confirmed it). I'd love to just spin up a stripped down OSX VM that'll take care of the content cache instead of having to run a dedicated Apple computer. Thanks for the read.
