I'm an IT student at a trade school (and I am graduating just as the pandemic stabs the economy, FML), and one thing has made me curious ever since we covered motherboard form factors. Specifically, how the form factor that was supposed to replace the venerable ATX family of form factors, BTX, was killed almost as soon as it was released. So I was wondering why that is. I grant you, the extent of my knowledge of the form factor is that the RAM slots were oriented to be parallel with the Expansion slots, and so they wouldn't be in the way of the airflow over the CPU and its cooler. And that's it. As far as I know, there wasn't - or shouldn't - be any other differences between the two standards. So I guess that's my real question: Why hasn't ATX adopted the one major physical difference between the two form factors, especially for the Enthusiast (and perhaps Research) market where cooling is so vital to performance that some are even willing to de-lid their CPUs in order to mod the chip for maximum cooling. ...Is there a place we can make requests for Tech Quickie episodes?

My friend recently gave me his old computer but it is only running a MSI B150M BAZOOKA motherboard and intel core i3 6100 cpu which creates a massive bottleneck in the system. Because of this I want to upgrade to a better CPU. From what I've read online some people say you can use 7th gen intel chips with updated motherboard bios but you can't overclock, I have no interest in overclocking I just want to be sure that I buy the correct CPU. currently I am unsure what is the best CPU for the motherboard. I have been thinking Intel Core i5-6600, or an i7 7700. basically, what is the best cpu I can get that is compatible with my system? system: motherboard: MSI B150M BAZOOKA CPU: intel core i3 6100 Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 1060 3Gb Memory: 8Gb DDR4

Okay so its my first time on this new Pc and I need help optimizing the experience. By that I mean it runs pretty hot at idle and under load it is the stock cooler that came with my 3600x but I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal grease instead of the stock paste. 35 to 45c idles with random cpu utilization spikes and under load 65 to 75c. iv'e heard of under volting and tweaking settings in the bios but Im lost when it comes to amd's layout. I came from an old I7 platform. Also seems the cpu doesnt really ever fully idle or drop to base frequency im not sure if this is normal or not. my 4770k OC would go from 4.4Ghz to even under base frequency at idle sometimes going as low as 3.00GHz. chipset and drivers are up to date! FULL PC SPECS CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600x stock speeds RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO using xmp profile @3600Mhz MOBO: Asus Tuf Gaming X570-PLUS latest bios. GPU: Asus Dual GTX 1060 6GB PSU: Corsair Gaming Series 800W 80+ bronze SSD: Sandisk 256GB SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB HDD: 2 3TB Western Digital NasDrives

Hi so I have done so much research into the best (primarily looking, but also has to be functional obv.) I came across the AsRock B450m Steel Legend, MSI Pro carbon wifi X470, and AsRock Fatal1ty X470, all of which are incredibly attractive and functionally sound boards IMO. The MSI board is the best looking and most functional, but the cheapest I found it was £120, (about $150) whereas the B450m is £81.99 ($100) and the Fatal1ty is about £120 also (but there was one on eBay refurb for for £69 the other day, sooo should have bought it.) Is there any other boards that look really good in your opinion? I know it seems a bit shallow, but looks are this PC's strong point. I don't want any ASUS boards either, because I don't like the somewhat needless lack of useful connectors, e.g. argb. Thanks

x570 What is the best x570 mobo for x3700x ?
Arnab Roy posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
i am bit confused as how to choose the right mobo for my ryzen 3700x i will get the build on december this year. the build i will get cpu= ryzen 7 5700x ram = gskill trident z 3000 mhz (1x8 gig) cl=16 (will get another 8 gigs next Jan) Motherboard =( not decided) gpu=rtx 2070 super trio 8gb from msi psu= (not decided) case= spec 04 from corsair now the thing is i don't plan on overclocking the cpu at all, maybe MAYBE!!!! a liitle light oc but that also later down the road. so if the OC option is available it good but if it dosen't then also i have noproblem, as Ryzen series dosen't oc very much to begin with. A recommendation for a decent mobo around (200-230)usd as prices here tend to be a bit more. And regarding the psu i am thinking of buying a 650 or a 750 watt psu. leaning a bit towards the 650 but i don't know that much about psu. recommendation needed. considered the gigabyte x570 ud but then again maybe i am cheaping out too much on the mobo. so any good recommendation will do.- 1 reply

Are there a list of motherboards that fit into an Acer Aspire 5536-5224?? It's not started up the software 3 times throughout its life. I've decided to just get a new board. Preferably one that supports AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core ZM-88. The whole point is to just keep my ports.

Hey everyone, my old PC is getting a little rusty and I was looking into doing a massive overhaul, which would be replacing everything except the GPU. So I asked a few friends for help and ended up going with that: https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/fv98jp I was wondering if anything could cause and issue, since PCpartpicker is issuing a warning (which I think should be fine after checking some posts but I'm not sure), PCPP is also mentioning that the cooler could cause an issue, so I don't really know if it's going to be an actual issue or not. In short, things i'm sure about getting are the Ryzen 5 3600 and the G.Skill Aegis 8GBx2 DDR4-3000. I want a motherboard that will allow future upgrades without too many issues, I mostly want to see if there's any issue with the MOBO and CPU/Cooler, so if you think of anything that could improve the build I'll take it, a SSD recommendation would be welcome too. I'd be willing to spend 650-700€ tops (with SSD), so if there's any recommendations, I'll gladly take them. P.S.: I'm in France so prices might differ if you're not using the French location in PCPP. Anyway, thanks in advance!

While pulling out a psu cable, i knocked the usb 3.0 plug out of my mobo and a pin fell off. I'm not using this mobo anymore but I want to either sell it or give it to a friend. Does anyone know an easy way to fix or counteract this like a usb 3.0 pcie thing? I think msi asks a $45 return and replace fee for stuff like this so any thoughts on anything cheaper? Its a MSI z370 gaming m5

Hello expert IT guys I hope you're having a great day. I need help.So. My mobo (really old but was working) suddenly "died". I think it short circuited with something in my case when I tried to remove it (into a new case), and I can't figure out how to revive my mobo. It turns on, fans and everything. My psu looks fine. Then, if I have the CPU installed, it starts overheating and beeps short beeps forever. If there's no cpu, then no beeps. What should I do?It is a gigabyte 970a ds3p rev2

Hello. So, in the end of 2019 i have finish this computer build. X570 Master with a 3950x and Noctuas Air Fans and Cooling. I wonder if some one could give me better advise about how to properly and correctly connect all cpu cooler fans headers. I am doubt about the real difference between System Fan headers and System Fan Pump header. In the motherboard manual they are represent as the same headers. All 4 pin numbers have the same output definitions. OH! i have installed the two temperature sensors and the noise sensor but i still have doubts about were to localized them inside this case Can any one give me a little help here. Above there is 2 pictures. 1º - "El Machina" with the connectors indicator and air system 2º - X570 Aorus Master Layout with red circles were are the fans installed.

Just recently installed some upgrades to my build. The parts are as follow with the new parts being noted in parenthesis: Asus ROG Crosshair VI Hero mobo AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Asus Strix GTX 1080 8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB 2x8GB 3200mhz Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x8gb 3200mhz (NEW PART) Samsung 970 EVO M.2 1TB *main drive*(NEW PART) Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD *secondary storage* Corsair CS650M PSU After everything was installed on the machine I used Samsung's migration tool to transfer all of windows files and personal files to the new m.2 unit. it all worked fine. Booted like a lightning that my jaw hit my desk. I was super excited about it. The next step was to clean the "old" SSD and turn it into a storage drive, so I did as samsung recommended and used their magician tool creating a bootable usb to "safe erase" all the information. The drive was erased and when booted into windows again, the magician tool recognized it but sad there was no drivers installed. Also, windows was not recognizing it as it didnt show on my list of storage devices.... or anywhere else. Device manager showed an unknown device. I went into BIOS and checked if it was being read by the mobo and it was although it wouldn't let me select it as a boot drive (I am assuming because there was nothing in it? I'm not an expert). I thought I left all settings in BIOS the same. I dont remember making any changes to BIOS so I saved and exited and the machine turned off and back on. This time, it took quite a bit to display anything on the screen, then the ROG logo popped up and it was on the screen for at LEAST 20 seconds. The first boot with the m.2 unit literally took less than 8 seconds from the moment I pushed the power button to my Windows lockscreen. I found how to fix the issues with the SSD and was able to set it up after some research and I am now able to use it as a regular storage device blablabla. Thats not the issue, whats driving me crazy is the stupid long boot times and how long the ROG logo stays on the screen after I power on my computer. I have updated the Mobo BIOS since then to the latest release and it changed nothing. All the windows drivers are up to date. Not sure really whats going on. Is it possible something in bios could've been accidentally changed without me realizing and its causing this? I am going to try to post a video or screenshot of my settings to see if anyone can spot something out of the ordinary. Hope to hear something from ya'll smart peeps. THANKS!!!!

Hi, All! I'm looking to build a new multi-purpose pc and I've having trouble locating the parts that I want to use. The main issue I've run into is finding a Thunderbolt 3 input Motherboard for an AMD build. For my audio recording I do most things D.I. (Direct in) and use a massive amount of plugins. Multiple Guitars, Basses, Keyboard, E-Drums, etc all D.I. into my USB 3 -Interface. The problem being at a certain point there is noticeable Latency which is why I'm opting for a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre Thunderbolt Interface. *I also believe my 4770k is getting a bit old and tired* Currently have a ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 Motherboard picked out and I've settled on a Ryzen 3700x with OLOy WarHawk RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin *Power Supply, SSD, HDD, Gtx 1070 is coming out of my old pc build from 4 years ago.** I'm choosing ITX because I want my PC to be as portable as possible. I do a lot of mobile recording where I need to bring my pc to a Recording Studio, Clients House, etc. (**Also will be switching to only SSDs and/or NVME M.2 SSD's.**) I'm looking for suggestions as I want my new build to look pretty, lol. I've settled on going two routes All RGB or an All White build. I favor the All White build with RGB accents. I'm looking for ITX or Micro-ATX motherboards that are White or at least mostly white in color, Thunderbolt 3 (Possibly Two PCI-E slots for a Thunderbolt 3 add on card) and not absolutely necessary but a NVME M.2. ssd slot would be pretty neat. Make things a bit lighter when carrying around.

Just trying to understand. All the X470/now X570 have the HDMI/DP built in, but you cant use them as the CPU's do not have a GPU onboard. So what is the use for these onboard connections if you cant use them?

So as my question shows, I was wondering If Hard Drives would benefit from PCIE 4.0, since SSDs appearently can benefit from the extra data speed bandwith. [21-12-2019_01_23.]

Hello everyone, Since cristmas is coming around and I'm currently building my amazon wishlist for this year, I was wondering if you guys know some good motherboards / upgrades for my system that work with: Ryzen 7 3700x (probably what i'll buy), Vega 56 (works great so I probably won't upgrade soon), RM750x(Vega needs it), and 2400 Mhz Ram. features like WIFI or RGB aren't important to me. the only real requirements besides Pricepoint and Hardware compatability are that it needs atleast 4 ram banks, decent space for components (so a full sized one basically) and USB 3.0 ports. Nice to have features would probably be a second M.2 slot, 10 Gig Ethernet, a lot of SATA III Ports and maybe support for good overclocking - Prec1sioN.

The PC won't boot and the frequency will go back into 2400mhz after a few restarts. My ram is t.force nighthawk 3000mhz 16gb (2x8) and My bios is updated I'm still new in building pc components. Badly need help. Sorry for my bad english

I am working on a new rig. I am leaning towards integrating two motherboards and everything that goes with them into one case, running off of one power supply. I currently have a fully modular Rosewill Lightning 1300 that I am considering using (yes, I know it is old) to run two systems. I have tracked down a psu splitter that Linus discussed on a LTT episode. I have had a difficult time locating a power supply calculator that can take into account two systems. One of my rigs will be used as a plex media server on 24/7, the other will be my daily driver (school, gaming, etc). I am looking to see if this will work for my needs, or should I go with two PSUs? Here are my specs: system 1 (always on): Asus Crosshair V formula Z AMD fx 9590 CPU Thermaltake water 3.0 ultimate watercooler 4x8 (32) gb ddr3 ram (possibly Sapphire rx 570 GPU) 6-5 7200 RPM HDDs (anywhere from 1 tb to 8 tb) 1-2 2.5" SSD System 2: Asus 570x ROG STRIX motherboard Thermaltake water 3.0 ultimate watercooler 4x16 (64) gb ddr4 Ryzen 7 3800x CPU m.2 SSD 1 3 tb HDD between the two, I expect to have 9 fans (3 per water cooler) and 3 spaced around the case edit: I am using a RTX 2070 TI, this will be used in system two; system two will be purchased within the next 6 months
