Adding Good Thermal Compound to Mac Mini
Guest posted a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
So today I decided that I have had enough of my Mac mini's fan ramping up to 4400 and even 5400 RPM over uploading videos, watching 1080p60 on YouTube, playing Porting Kit Windows games, etc. I think MacOS Sierra had something to do with this, but I also suspected decreasing effectiveness on whatever thermal was applied to the CPU and GPU (soldered to the board - so much for even obscure upgradability unless you really know what you're doing). I used my various bits (thanks Linus for your endless iFixit promotions - they helped me!) to get in that tiny case, flipped the board over, took off the heat syncs for the GPU and CPU, took off the old thermal, added MX-4 Arctic thermal (which was non-conductive), put it back together, and now what? Well, we needed a stress test. Not wanting to buy software just for making this post, I decided to go with the free method of asking Terminal to produce a lot of the word "yes" repeating over and over, on all threads. I did that stress test for 5 minutes or so, and interestingly enough, it seems the new compound works — I never got passed 4400RPM, and when the fan got to that level, the CPU actually cooled from 78C to 73C, whereas it normally goes into the 80's when stressed. This is fantastic. I still have to test raw upload, RAM, and PortingKit tests, but I'll keep you posted. Here are some relevant screenshots, linked on my Google Drive: check them out (if you're at all interested). https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwaQzL0vJPfWYnVBajdMQ1UwajQ/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwaQzL0vJPfWaEdjdkR0Qzh3MUE/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwaQzL0vJPfWZ1IwOVFOWk8tMzQ/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwaQzL0vJPfWNnZRaTd2d1VFcjQ/view?usp=sharing I hope this post is relevant. If you want to ask questions about my methodology or want to suggest better or other ways I could stress test, let me know! Unfortunately, I don't have stress test data for the before the new compound, but I can tell you, my CPU thermal throttled to 75% full usage in MONIT. Edit: My Mac Mini Model is the Mac Mini 5,2 (Mid 2011); I added a Mercury 6G 240GB SSD and 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz SODDIM Crucial memory to it. It's GPU, a Radeon 6630M, is soldered to the board. I believe the CPU is a Sandy Bridge Core i5-2520M dual-core hyper-threaded processor. -
Hello ltt users! My 980ti is still having problems with its temperature. On stock settings it runs up to 92 degrees and i belive it isnt even on full load while so. I switched out the thermal compound which actually made it even worse. I have cleaned out all of the dust inside my case and got case fans running at 1000rpm. Can i return the card for being too hot or what are your suggestions / solutions. Im considering reapplying the thermal compound AGAIN. Thanks alot all tips are appreciated!

So im considering to get the 1070 FTW, as it's actually small enough for my case... fits my color theme and good specs. But im a bit concerned about the recent heat problems. If i buy the card now, will the heat problem then be fixed on that card, or are they still working on the problem, so i´ll have to get a thermal pad kit? In case it's fixed, have the temps become more reasonable or should i look for another card?

So I have seen my msi r9 390 getting pretty hot. I know it's supposed to get hot, but I constantly get 90-95C while gaming. It's in the Rosewill SRM-01 case, inside which the gpu fits, but do not get a lot of air flow. I would like to know if it's my gpu's fault and I should rma it or if I should simply change for a mid-tower case. Thank you!

Yo guys just got myself a Ryzen 9 3900x CPU a couple of weeks ago and I've been looking at its temperature these days. I know AMD usually has it's reputation for being really heaty and stuff but I want to be sure. Temps that I've been following: Idle: 50-60°C Ingame (League of Legends): 60-70°C, sometimes over 70°C I'm using the stock AMD CPU cooler that came together with the Ryzen 9 3900x which I recently heard isn't one of the best. Other things I can think of a reason for the heat is maybe changing the thermal paste with a better one. I've been thinking of getting a liquid cooler as I'm using a Mid-Tower NZXT H500i which doesn't have really good airflow. Do you guys think switching to Liquid cooling will be better or should I get a new, better air CPU cooler and maybe add a few fans to the front of the PC case? Will appreciate any ideas/opinions!

I understand that axial fans can keep a card cooler and quieter whilst achieving higher clock speeds, but the axial fans used on cards like strix and windforce cards are massive in terms of width and height, and there are always 2 or 3 instead of just 1 so it isn't really fair. I am wondering why companies don't make a massive thick heatsink graphics card like the ROG Strix 2080 ti and instead of 3 axial fans, put one massive (or 2/3 massive) centrifugal fans on it to offer the advantage that centrifugal fans have of much higher static pressure. The noise of larger fans is generally less because they run at a lower RPM, the heat will be exhausted out the case, it seems like a win-win situation! Is there something I am overlooking? I would love to see a card like the Strix 970 have 2 centrifugal fans on it as it would look pretty awesome and wouldn't cook the insides of many small cases with poor airflow. Is multiple centrifugal fans blowing in the same direction (like push pull) even possible? https://imgur.com/a/58PZ13/ (the example of large axial fans vs a single smaller centrifugal fan) - I am a massive fan of centrifugal fans, and I think they are far better than people think but they are also made too small for these applications in my opinion

So full specs first as is Dark base 700 with one extra fan installed Asus rog strix b450 Ryzen 7 1700 factory wraith spire cooler 16 gb 3200 MHz Patriot rgb 250gb ssd, current os 1 2tb HDD 2 1tb HDD 1 1tb ssd Nvidia gtx 1080 sc I'm adding a couple of m.2 nvme drives and I like the way my rig looks now ie where the GPU is sitting at a lower pcie slot not blocking the view of the holographic strix sticker too much. Now, this is also where my nvme m.2 slot is where I'm thinking I'm going to put my 970 plus nvme drive that will run my os, will it get too warm with the GPU right on top of it??? If not then I don't mind getting rid of 1 HDD in order to install my second 1tb crucial p1 in the other m.2 slot since 2 of my data ports will be disbaled. Or?! Is it acceptable, without throttling, to use a nvme pcie card for both said nvme drives in a pci slot and if so, recommendations please.

Last night Windows pushed through a BIOS update to my ASUS GL703GM. I have checked the ASUS site, and it is a legitimate BIOS version. Today though, after the update, my laptop is idling 10 degrees hotter, and I can now physically feel the heat coming through the top of the laptop when typing. Please help!

Ryzen 5 3600 heating and not boosting
TheNamesLigma posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hi all, thanks for your time, My new ryzen 5 3600, not an x, with a bequiet slim rock (tdp 160), is overheating. It reaches 90 degrees under p95, and every so often, it goes from, 40 idle to 60 in a bout a second for no reason. But when it isnt limited by thermals, like a game or light workload, it doesnt not turbo to the rated 4.2, and max is 3.95 which it never deviates from. on asus x470 prime, latest bios and corsair vengeance rgb pro, bequiet slim rock and corsair 550 watt psu, phanteks p350x with 2 intake, 1 exhuast, and two cpu heatsinc fans. TLDR: r5 3600 overheating, and has unstable idle (peaks from 40-60) Doesnt boost Temps accelerates incredible quickly. Cooler is on tightly. -
I have option of cm ml240l, corsair h80i or thermaltake 3.0 in aio And the only high end option in air cooling is nh d15. But the issue is my case only supports upto 160mm max cpu cooler height. What would be best option for me? The temperatures are pretty high here 38-40+°C in summers so will aio be better or the liquid evaporates sooner? Because mostly I will be using it for gaming 4-5hours a day?

Hi, There's mini build plan going on but couldn't find a good review that explains about this, in depth. Mobo: Asus ROG STRIX B360-I GAMING 8th Gen mini-ITX CPU: i7 8700 (Non K) Cooler: Cryorig H7 Case: Antec DP301M The whole concept of this build is a compact footprint but with good airflow, because this might be used in a non-air-conditioned space from time to time. Also, the case dealer made me an offer, which I can't deny. A good review of this case will be much appreciated.

Hey guys so I recently installed RX 570 8GB Armor Fan OC edition and when I play any game the temp keeps @ 80-82 degrees. I am using 19.4.3 drivers version. Should I reapply thermal paste or change my fan settings or change power limit? The consumption goes up to 130-146W... Or is it normal for this GPU? Please help me. My previous GPU was at 58-62 degrees at max. (it was low profile card tho')

So i i bought new ram which was Crucial Ballistix Sport LT White DDR4 2666MHz 2x8GB. I already had Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 2666MHz. As stupid i am i didn't remove my old ram and just put the two new ram in and tried starting the PC. It didn't boot up and it gave me a flashing red light at the MEMOK button on my asus motherboard z170-a. After that i tried removing the old ram and just have the Ballistix in the pc. it gave me the same error. So i tried just putting in the old Corsair and it did boot up but when it was booting up the red light was on the MEMOK button and then switched to another location and then to another before going away. (the two other red lights was over and under the GPU on the motherboard.) Now after being frustrated i tried removing the old ram and putting in the Ballistix. it gave me the Red light at the MEMOK button again so i tried pressing the button and it boots me up to BIOS. I tried messing with the ram settings in the BIOS but nothing seemed to work after i restarted the PC. Then suddenly after restarting the PC multiple times it randomly booted up. It gave the 3 flashing lights like before in the boot up process but i was able to get into the PC. Now the problem is that mostly my GPU gets overheated to about 75 degrees of playing not so heavily reliant graphics games. The GPU reached almost 100 degrees celsius when i played Star Wars Battlefront 2. The motherboard and the CPU also gets very hot aswell but mostly its the GPU that goes very hot. I think my motherboard might be broken or something. I've checked the fans to see if they work and they are normal. No clue what to do now. Did putting in both the old ram and new ram ruin the motherboard? they have the same MHz

I bought an xfx rx480 RS 4gb some days ago now, and its working perfectly fine on all gamse, but one. Dauntlesss. Whenever i play Dauntless the gpu temps goes up to an average 80-90c. Now i think that shouldnt happen. Ive tuned the fans and all but the temperature seems to stay at 80-90. the only time it goes below 80 is on the loading screens. I think it may be because dauntless is in beta and they havent optimized the game yet, so therefor its running a bit hot. Is there anyway to fix this or just to wait on some optimization update for dauntless? EDIT: on all the other games the gpu temps never goes above 70-75c. An average temp around 50-65c.

I'm wondering if two cpus made by the same company around the same time with the same or a very similar clock speed and the same number is cores would have different TDPs if one had hyperthreading and the other didn't. Anyone know this?

Hi everyone, i have problem with my laptop GP 63 Leopard 8RF, i7-8750h. First thing first i repasted my Laptop Thermals Paste ''Grizzly Kryonaut'' because the temps were already scary, so i managed to drop a little bit, my CPU is undervolted as well -160mV that helped a bit in idle its 35-45. But when playing this game.... this game in specific (''Star Citizen'') its like doing a Deep CPU stress test with prime 95 (No Joke) the temps get to 94C (no undervolt 98 and throttle gets on) only on CPU (GPU is at 80C), playing other games like Metro Exodus it gets around 85C on CPU (I don't know if its acceptable for a laptop) since a had custom loop PC before... so i came here to ask you guys... you probably know better then me about laptop temps. What are the temps acceptable for a laptop CPU is constant 87C fine in and extremely heavy game? Btw Bios is all up to date etc.

Hello! SO yesterday I clean out my pc with compressed air after a few years of dust build up. I tried to take off the front panel of my gpu but that did not work so i put all the screws back in but 2 that i could not get back in. Those screws only held the plastic frame to 1 half of the gpu that is it. When i went back to turn my pc on whenever i tried to watch a twitch stream my graphics card would hit 95c instantly and the fans would get really loud. The issue is the back plate of the graphics card is not hot AT ALL. I'm very confused because this started happening AFTER i cleaned it out with compressed air. Can anyone help me please?? Graphics card: r9 390 strix i can post my other pc specs if I need to.

Since I've updated my S9 to android 9 and Samsung One UI, I've experienced that my phone feels hot all the time. I live in Sweden where it is quite cold, so it not from the climate. I have also noticed that the battery drains faster than before. Is there a fix for this?

So here's my story I've gone to tom's hardware and no luck so this is my last option before taking it somewhere. I need all the last help I can get. recently my GPU has been overheating. I don't know why. I have chnaged thermal paste out and thermal pads to vram and whatnot to the inside of the card. None of my layouts reagarding air flow has changed and my fans are spotless. They work perfectly fine and rotate without a problem. Things start to go badly when I load certain games for instance Escape From Tarkov, Kingdom Come: deliverance, or even ARK. My idle temps are 29-35 C. However when I load previous games i ran on 50-70C they are jumping to close to 100C in a spand of 5-7 seconds. I've set fan curves and they almost prove ineffective. I don't know what could be wrong I've updated my bios, drivers and firmware. I've restored any Nvidia settings I've ever tinkered with. I have also gotten multiple programs to monitor these temps and they all read the same. My card never used to do this and randomly started crashing my PC about a week and a half ago. It doesn't jump temps all low stress games like Minecraft, Besieged, etc. I've run out of ideas and hope somebody can help me with this. A pic of my GPU settings in afterburner is the picture posted as well as a link to my pc itself below. Thank you in advance for reading this! https://www.bestbuy.com/site/reviews/asus-rog-g20cb-desktop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-1tb-hard-drive-black-red/5614801?page=2

So i have an Acer Predator Helios PH317-52-71WQ and my cpu while gaming is around 80/95 degrees celsius. I know that max working temperature is 100 degrees celsius. I worry that my laptop will die in a year or two. So i want to know which temps are safe, and what can i do to lower that temperatures ? Tnx

So my cpu and cooler (h100i v2) are probably around 1-2 years old. I am rendering a edited video (with techsmith camtasia)... open task manager and see that its on full load. so i open corsair link and 2 of the 4 cores are at 100 C the other 2 are at ~32 C, Im wondering if my cooler needs to be replaced or there is a simple solution or do i need a new rig? specs: CPU: i7 7700k MoBo: MSI Z170A-pro ram: 32gb corsair vengance 3000mhz cooler: h100i v2--- using corsair high performance SP fans PSU: Rm650x GPU: GTX 1060 3gb

My motherboard is reading at over 100 degrees as soon as i boot his new build, but i can touch the motherboard anywhere i please and its NOT hot to the touch, are bot programs getting bad data from the same spot? All the components for this build were bought used. Not sure if it's worth mentioning but when I put it all together and booted the fist time the PSU was switched to 230 instead of 115 and the computer shut itself off after I plugged in a USB wifi stick, windows said it was surge protection, so i flipped the switch back to 115 and it hasn't shut down on i's own since

Hello, I recently decided to buy a gaming laptop as I couldn't really justify spending enough cash in computers to have a laptop and a proper PC separately. I ended up buying an Asus ROG GL553VD, apparently a "budget" laptop, and while I'm happy with it so far I have two questions about it. The first question is about temperatures. What are the normal operating temperatures for a gaming laptop of this kind? Playing TES Skyrim at 1080p max I've found the CPU to normally heat up at 75 or even 80°c in some parts of the map, despite it being a relatively old game. The same happens with CS:GO with the frame limiter at 120fps, despite CS:GO also being relatively old. Are these temperatures normal for a gaming laptop? They seemed a bit too high to me. Would it be wise to limit the framerate to 60 to have lower temperatures? I'd like this computer to last me as long as it can. As for the second question, what are the dangers of updating the BIOS? Will this mess with my warranty? I've seen there's a new 3.0.8 bios available for the GL553VD, the one I have has 3.0.6. Would it even be worth the risk upgrading it? I have a version with a i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050 and 12gb of ram, no ssd, only a 1tb HGST hdd. I was unable to find this exact configuration on any online review, so it might be a regional version only sold in south america. Thanks for your help beforehand.
