Hi! Thanks to anyone who helps. Also, please let me know if I should post this somewhere else - I didn't know whether to put this under motherboards or software. So, recently, I bought a mini-pcie to pcie x16 mining riser so I could use a GPU I had as an external GPU for my laptop (Lenovo Ideapad p500) (also, I know I shouldn't really use a mining riser for this purpose, but I'm on a tight budget). So, I take out the wifi card, hook up my riser, graphics card, and psu how its supposed to be. When I turn it on - nothing. The fans are running on both the GPU and the PSU, but, when I go into device manager, it doesn't even pop up anywhere. I try the riser in another older laptop I have, and it works. So, I try to install the GPU driver, I try making sure the plug is secure, I try uninstalling the old graphics driver, I even put in the old wifi card (which it recognizes) and... nothing. After some research, I learn my laptop is whitelisted, and will not recognize any other device besides the original wifi card. I read that the solution is to deactivate the LAN card under advanced settings in the BIOS, but I don't have advanced settings, so I just go under configuration, disable Wireless LAN, and it still doesn't work. At this point, I don't know what to do. I eventually find a video (below) on modding the BIOS. The modding requires me to use intel ME Tools V8 r3 (which I think should work, as my Intel Management Engine is v8). However, when I load it up in the first set of instructions (in cmd), it says, "Error 104: The 2 SPI flash devices do not have compatible command sets." I'm stumped (It might be that I copied over windows from another PC onto this PC - I did reset windows though, and it installed all the necessary drivers). Can anyone help as to how to disable whitelist on this PC? (PS - I cannot back up my BIOS with the software in the video, as almost every major antivirus sees the backup software as a virus. Also, I can't go into safe mode, as it gives me a BSOD).

Since last year I've been running a framework laptop with a 2080 ti in a razer core X egpu, it's been fiddly with its fair share of issues in the past, but I had gotten it to what I thought was functional until I moved last week. Since then I have not gotten it stable and over 90% of the time it will crash within a minute or two of starting up, but rather than a full crash both monitors will go black except for the taskbar and it will be unresponsive yet I will still be able to move my cursor around, requiring a restart. When it does this both fans on the card ramp to 100% speed and the led logo goes dark. Intuition tells me this means there's a display issue, but I can't figure out anything that's changed after the move. I've checked all the connections, reseated the card multiple times, downloaded latest drivers for both laptop and card, and tried a different port on the laptop, nothing seems to fix the issue. I need help! The only possible lead I've got at the moment is that when I've been able to put load on the card, memory temperatures stay pegged at 109C which seems hot, but I don't know how to bring those down, and asking if it's a problem has received mixed answers.

I've been searching the internet for quite a while, and I haven't found much info on whether a thunderbolt expansion card, like the Gigabyte GC-Titan Ridge can act as a downstream device, and convert TB data into PCIE. I drew a quick diagram in paint. Is this in theory possible with standard cards? I've seen specialized cards that do specifically that, but they do not list any of the ICs used for the controllers, so I can't cross-check if the brand-name cards support being used externally. Can a thunderbolt PCIE card act as a downstream device, and send PCIE data to the connected device?

What do you think of using domething like this with an external thunderbolt nvme ssd adapter to run an cheap low powered graphics card? Ive got an old desktop or two that i can steal a powersuply from As far as im aware id just be able to blug these two adapters together and then id be good to go as there any reason this wouldent work for a low powered card (I understand that I am limited to only 4 PCIe lanes) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003057641163.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.2c244530Ryo0iB&algo_pvid=93914a4a-c683-4b1b-8c4a-824f74b481b1&algo_exp_id=93914a4a-c683-4b1b-8c4a-824f74b481b1-2&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000023648940134"}&pdp_pi=-1%3B9.59%3B-1%3B-1%40salePrice%3BAUD%3Bsearch-mainSearch https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000975933842.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.1e3a759337libA&algo_pvid=54a86eaa-459a-4cc3-9cda-36e59e196f0d&algo_exp_id=54a86eaa-459a-4cc3-9cda-36e59e196f0d-0&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000027491986252"}&pdp_pi=-1%3B96.68%3B-1%3B-1%40salePrice%3BAUD%3Bsearch-mainSearch

Hello guys, I recently acquired a used Dell 5480 with an i7 7820HQ (UMA) 32GB 2400Mhz RAM I've been researching and this model does not have Thunderbolt 3, despite of type-c port, and locked settings on bios So my question is, can I use maybe a m.2 eGPU? anyone i've read trying egpu's on this model were using TB3 (which comes only on H series cpu + Nvidia dedicated, and mine is the integrated hd 630) I have 1 free slot pci-e for nvme ssd (smaller ones, the other one is beign used for a 1tb samsung 980 pro (not running gen4 but got a good deal for it) and I can still use wifi I have a monitor I can use, so instead of building a new desktop from scratch, maybe I can survive for a little time using a eGPU

Getting NVENC or similar on thunderbolt, without a whole GPU
RedyAu posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Hi! This may be a stupid question, but I hope you can point me in the right direction. I have a ThinkPad T15 laptop with a 10th gen i7 in it. It's great, compact, fast, I love it. It has no discrete graphics, however. I've been thinking of buying a thunderbolt EGPU case, and some low-power (for example GTX 1650) GPU, but I was shocked to find out, how much EGPU cases cost. More than a GPU, even in today's world! I really only need NVENC, or some other hardvare accelerated video encode/decode and processing power. I'm not planning on gaming (and certainly not AAA recent titles), but occasionally I need to edit video, or make a livestream of an event. This CPU alone can't handle that, as OBS uses 30-40% just for encode/decode. Does a device like this exist? Or can you recommend some extremely simple EGPU case/cable/anything, that doesn't cost a furtune? -
Hi there, I live in Australia and I’m wanting to make a new study set up. my old set up was a 10600k and 3060ti but I’m looking to get a new laptop for work/study. now that the 40 series GPUs are out I’ve got my eyes on the new 4080. I'm finding Trouble looking for a laptop with really good battery life and a powerful “future proof” Cpu with thunderbolt eGPU support. idk if I’ve been looking in the wrong places but it would be ideal to have a laptop with a well cooled new generation i7 that wouldn’t bottle neck a 4080. I don’t game while I’m not home so having a dedicated gpu doesn’t really have a use case for me at all. My preferred specs would be 32gb ram, and 500gb ssd as I have found an external storage solution for games. I mostly play Call of duty, beamng drive and forza for reference. my monitor is the gigabyte aorus FO48U.

Budget (including currency): $2500 CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Lots of Chrome tabs, 4k video editing, 3D modelling and rendering, gaming of all genres Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): What I currently have: Ultrawide monitor, Razer Core X, RX 5700, Mouse and Keyboard Current Laptop: i7-1065G7 (with iGPU), 12GB RAM, 500gb nvme SSD + 1TB HDD I am currently in the process of creating a PC setup for my Engineering Program. I currently use a laptop connected to a budget LG IPS Ultrawide. The issue with my laptop is that the CPU is weak for anything other than web browsing, has very slow graphics and it has no thunderbolt EGPU support. Battery life is also important as my current laptop only lasts for 4 hours while web browsing with all settings set to battery saving. I aim to have a laptop that can last all day without needing a charge. I am currently debating between an upgrade to high performance, portable laptop such as the Dell XPS 15 (https://deals.dell.com/en-ca/productdetail/fr5c) to combine with the RX 5700 EGPU or to build a desktop system and purchase a separate portable laptop. Both seem to cost about $2000-2500 in total. The desktop would be an i7 13th gen, 32gb with my current RX 5700 ($1000) in addition to an LG gram or similar for $1000-1500 CAD. As for a laptop, I am looking for 32gb RAM, 13-15 inch size, a powerful yet efficient CPU, thunderbolt EGPU support and all day battery life. Here is the list of pros and cons I have made so far for the 2 options: Single laptop Pros: One system with all the files and programs More powerful system on the go Cons: Less powerful when stationary compared to desktop Not easily serviceable or upgradeable Desktop + portable laptop Pros: Faster stationary performance Desktop can easily be serviced or upgraded Cons: Files and applications are not shared Performance is slower on the go I was also considering purchasing a high end portable laptop, however my concern is that notebook CPUs will not be able to keep up with the RX 5700 and potentially higher end GPUs that I will upgrade to in the future.

Budget (including currency): 2000eur Country: Lithuania Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly for programming, though my target is to play Apex Legends on maxed out graphics without any lag Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): My primary laptop setup: Dell 9520 XPS CPU: I7-12700H GPU: nVidia RTX3050ti mobile RAM: DDR5 32GB Display: 3.5K 3456 x 2160, 60Hz, OLED, 400 nit Accesories: Monitors: 2x Dell U2518D Keyboard: Microsoft Surface Keyboard Mouse: Logitech G903 Dock: Dell WD19TB - Because it provides USB with 130w power delivery eGPU Case: Razer Core X ( haven't really used it, but bought it really cheap ) My NAS setup: My NAS Setup My problems: I want to be able to play Apex at max settings Afraid that purchasing nVidia 3070ti or nVidia 4070ti would make my CPU bottleneck Uncertain how these graphics would perform undex Thunderbol3 connection which to my knowledge uses only 3 PCIE lanes I could build a desktop, but I want to have to have multiple desktops in my home I could build gaming rig out of my Unraid build but HDD sound is quite annoying while working Also I should mentions that I'm planning upgrade my monitors to 3x Dell U2723QE or should I get 2 of them and a gaming monitor? I want to do a wall mount build for my monitors, so same design and colors would really help the cause. Sorry for rambling so much, but basically what would you do if you were me? Buy nVidia 3070ti or nVidia 4070ti place it in Razer Core X and game with the laptop? <- This would be preferred but not sure about compatibility Buy nVidia 4070ti upgrade PSU on Unraid build and make it a gaming rig? Could I have long cable from other room so that I wouldn't have to hear HDD noise? Build a desktop completely for gaming? I play games maybe 2 times a week at most. Some other option I don't see ? I will attach pictures of my build, don't mind the cable management as this is not a final version.

Hi there! I've been interested in machine learning for quite some time now, and have finally decided that I wanted to upgrade my hardware to include a GPU with more VRAM, as the models that I work with are usually quite large. For reference, I still want to continue using my framework 12th generation (i7-1260P, 32GB RAM) laptop, which is why U need to use an eGPU solution. Do you think that the P40/P100 are feasible cards for my requirements or should I use another card with less VRAM. My budget is around 500€ max. (For just the card). Thank you in advance.

Thanks for coming in! I'm now a proud owner of Razer Core X Chroma which I am going to use with Dell XPS 9560 for some gaming. I'm planning on purchasing RTX 2070 Super because it looks really nice in perfomance per buck ratio. Also I prefer quiet cards. I have already done some research and here are models I like: ASUS ROG GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER STRIX GAMING OC - I've already had ok experience with asus and cooling looks great MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING X TRIO - reddit says it's one of the quietest cards and cooling looks great too EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC HYBRID Gaming - the reason why I came here. Watercooling is always the best in noize and temps. But I have zero experience with EVGA and hybrid gpus and a little bit nervous about it. It has a limited discount offer so I need to make decision quickly. It will definitely fit inside case, that I have checked. GPUs pricings are nearly the same. Please help me chose one of those or recommend another model.

Hi guys, I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience with eGPUs. I'm thinking of buying one for my Thinkpad since i moved it's the only pc i have at the moment. I think the CPU will be able to keep up with a good high end GPU so i've been looking at the 1080 gaming box from gigabyte. Does anyone have experience with this or a similar product/situation? Any info and help is appreciated.

Hi everyone, I've a Dell XPS 15 9570 with i7-8750h and 16gb of ram (I'm not sure if this matters). I'm planning to buy an eGPU solely for gaming. I've done sone researches and I'm pretty sure about going for the Razer Core X but I'm open to advices on this one too. Anyway, the main question of this post is: what GPU is recommended to pair with my laptop? I was initially thinking of a GTX 1080 or a RTX 2070, but I'm afraid my laptop would bottleneck it and it would be a waste of money. I'm basically looking for the best quality/price ratio where i can get the most out of the GPU. Thanks!

So I wanted to get for a family member of a mine a eGPU such as the Razer Core X. I have a GTX 1060 3gb laying around that I don't need anymore, and prefer to give it to him. Problem is he owns a Lenovo Z50-75, boasting a powerful quad core AMD APU (Lol). Is it possible to like get a adapter of some sort that wouldn't necessarily affect speed? Such as a 2x usb to a 1x Thunderbolt 3. If that sounds confusing, I mean an adapter that uses 2 USB Type A ports, and somehow splits the data (More or less equal) to the thunderbolt 3 connection? Will there be any problems at all? Idk, I don't feel like it would be necessary to buy a whole laptop with better specs, neither a laptop that has thunderbolt 3. Thank you for reading this! p.s are there any alternatives for this too? That I can somehow improve PC performance for him? Specifically GPU wise?

hi, with PCIe 5 on the way, AMD getting thunderbolt 3(maybe new iteration), the speed of the x4 lanes should quadruple from PCIe 3 x4. Is there a chance it becomes worth going eGpu? I imagine not in a near futur since laptops don't implement desktop technology as fast. They say PCIe 4 and 5 does nothing for gamers but for laptop would it not unlock more power for mobility?

egpu What cable do I need to get EXP GDC Beast working?
Kenonline12 posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Recently I have purchased an EXP GDC beast 8 mpcie version along with a GTX 1060,550w PSU,molex to 8 pin cable to upgrade my HP elitebook 840 g2 soon the shipment arrives and in my excitement that I can finally play games at playable graphic setting and decent framerate I hurriedly screw my laptop open and to my horror, what awaits me in the wlan slot that I thought was supposedly a mini pcie wifi card was something else all along and the mini pcie is too large to for in the slot I took out the WiFi card and identified it to be a https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/84177/intel-dual-band-wireless-n-7265.html and its form factor turns out to be M.2 2230, M.2 1216 So do I have to order an NGFF cable to replace the mpcie one I have right now? Will an NGFF cable fit in the M.2 2230, M.2 1216 slot? and will the NGFF cable works with the mpcie version exp GDC beast? I have invested so much into this endeavor any help will be greatly appreciated -
Hey guys, I know there are a lot of posts about eGPU on laptops, so, sorry if this has already been asked So as a project I want to build mhy Asus N76VB into something else. Now I have seen Linus his vid’s about the “beast” where the EGPU kind of works. So i started to look around for some alternatives and I came across this at AliExpress: http://s.aliexpress.com/qQRbeUZj It is significantly cheaper, so can anyone tell me if this is a good alternative? Best regards, Dick

Hi, I'm building an eGPU using a RAZER Core V2 board bought from AliExpress. I hope someone can identify a connector on it for me? It is the connector which runs from the main board to the LED board. 10 pins in 1 row, and I guess it would be a ribbon cable connecting them. Photos attached. The reason for this is that a magnetic case switch controls the power on of the Core. This switch seems to be on the LED board. People have bypassed this by putting a magnet on the switch. Instead of buying the LED board, I wanted to find the 5Vsb signal from the LED board connecting cable and run it to ground (through a resistor) to power the mainboard on. The pins are too small to work with however. I want therefore to buy the correct (ribbon?) connector and then work with those cables. Can anyone advise what the 1x10pin connector type is?

I've had an Aorus 1080 gaming box for the past year, and originally had a lot of trouble setting it up, but after installing the thunderbolt software and controller it was more or less working. However, many times it just would not connect to my computer and many times it was just unreliable. Now, it just straight up does not connect, and has not for the past 4 days. I have it connected to a Dell XPS 13 9370 with PCIe 4x and an i7 processor. What I first tried is updating all the drivers, but it says they are all up to date. I don't know what this means, but it says "15d2" for the version. When I go into device manager, the thunderbolt controller gives me the error code 10, saying that the drivers are not updated, but when I go to update, it says it is fully updated. When I plug the thunderbolt cable into my computer it starts charging. I also know that my computer detects a thunderbolt dock is there, but from there it doesn't know what to do. Can anyone help me with this? I am feeling incredibly frustrated searching Dell's support page. Thanks!

I'm planning so slowly get away from gaming notebooks and desktop PC, but I just spend a bunch on a gaming notebook from 2016 last year. It 1070 is fine for what I do, but the CPU is in comparison really bad, it spikes to 50% in idle and is normally on around 30% idle. So for my new PC I'm planning to start with the core components and then gradually upgrade. That means: Mother board, AMD Ryzen 3rd gen, Power supply, 16 GB Ram from Notebook with adapters, storage, including windows from my old laptop and now to my Question: Would it be possible, to use my Notebook as an external GPU until I will go and get a real one?

Hi, I have a 2019 donglebook pro 13 inch and would like and external gpu to go with it. I have a very low budget (under 100)and already have a spare gpu. I'm not sure if this will work at all, but could I plug in the latest version of the exp gdc dock to an nvme to tb3 adapter and run it like that. Many thanks Alistair

So I was watching the JayzTwoCents video on the new ROG eGPU enclosure and also watched his second video where he attempts to get better performance and I got to wondering. Does the cable length of the thunderbolt cable make a difference? Im not talking about the quality of the data that goes through. I don't think that it degrades any. The bigger thing was getting data to and from the enclosure faster. By going from a 3 ft. cable to a 1 ft cable reducing significantly the amount of possible instructions pulsing through the cable at any second while also reducing the total travel time (which is small granted). Or at least I think it does. I did some flimsy math based on the speed of light vs. the possibly amount of cycles of cpu data that could be sent based on a quad core processor. Basically at the speed of light and rounding down to 3ghz you could have about 30 cycles worth of data in the cable at any given time per core at 3 feet. This number is down to 10 per core at a 1 ft cable. My Google Fu has failed to produce any search results for such things and figured I would ask here to see if anyone might have encountered this.

Hello, My laptop's MXM GPU dies recently, I found some solutions on the internet to plug an eGPU to a laptop using the Express Card slot and an adapter, but I was wondering if I couldn't use my laptop's MXM 3.b port to plug-in the GPU or do I need an adapter as well ? It's an Alienware M17X R4 of 2012 (AMD 7970m version) Thanks !
