Hello all. I have a PC running two separate installs of Windows 10 on two separate SSDs, one for work stuff, the other for gaming. I've been running this setup for almost two years, and the only hardware change was when I upgraded the gaming setup's SSD in October of 2017, both now run on 500GB Samsung 850 EVOs. (I reinstalled Windows 10 Pro on both drives at this time, just to go with fresh installs all around.) Seeing as these were on the same computer, I had used the same product key. This was totally fine until the other day. The gaming install is fine. But the work install now says that Windows 10 isn't activated. When I try to activate it, it says that Windows can't be activated by that product key. The work install is running Windows 10 Pro, Version: 1709, OS Build: 16299.192, if that helps at all. Has Microsoft recently changed something regarding install situations like this? Or do I really need to buy a second Win 10 Pro key, even though they're on the same PC, and are never online at the same time? Your help is greatly appreciated in advance! EDIT: I haven't tied either install to a Microsoft account, as I have zero desire to do so. -------------------- PC Specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K RAM: 32GB DDR4 GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 980 MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 (Rev: 1.0) With latest firmware) Boot SSD: 2x Samsung 500GB SATA (One per Win 10 install) Storage HDD: Western Digital 3TB HDD Case: Corsair 650D OS: Windows 10 Pro

Hi, this is my first time posting in these forums. I play a lot of games ranging from the newest to very old '90s games on PC. I'm sure most of you know that Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 all have poor compatibility with games that run on x32 bit operating systems (not to mention Windows 10's shady compatibility with DirectX9 programs). In order to combat this, I would like to set up a multi boot configuration with Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10 on a SATA III SSD. But there are a few things I'm unsure about, so I'll list my computer's specs and then proceed to point them out. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero IX Z270 LGA1151 CPU: Intel Core I7 7700K Stock clock speeds GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB Overclocked RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz Storage 1: SATA SSD of negotiable capacity (currently own a 128GB, but am going to get a bigger one, perferably 1TB) Storage 2: Seagate Ironwolf 10TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache Optical Drive: Yes Now, the first thing i'm concerned about is attempting to run Windows XP, a x32 bit operating system, with a computer with 16GB of RAM. x32 bit can only support 4GB of RAM, but i don't have a 4GB or less stick, i have two 8GB sticks. Would this stop me in my tracks right there? Or would it work, but only use up to 4GB of ram on 1 stick Is it even compatible with DDR4 RAM or Z270 mobos? Also, is Windows XP and Windows 98 even compatible with being installed on an SSD? (I avoided NVME for compatibility issues with Windows 7, though easily fixable with a patch i heard) Also, i don't know anything really, about Windows 98 and 16bit operating system compatibility or requirements. Also i have no clue if the CPU is too new and incompatible with older operating systems. i know Microsoft blocked Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 in an effort to get more people to "update" to windows 10, but it's easily fixed with an unofficial patch (which i'm currently using) because they should work just fine with Windows 7, but MS got shady. I'd like to throw in Ubuntu if at all possible, as an added bonus. It's not a huge want, but just that. an added bonus. Also, would Windows XP and Windows 98 even support video output through DisplayPort or HDMI? Would I be better off attempting to set up Virtual Machines for XP and 98? If so, or if not, please explain. Thank you for taking the time to check out my conundrum/plan. All input is greatly appreciated!

I'm considering buying the 7577 (256gb ssd +1tb hdd). The 256gb ssd itself isn't probably enough for both windows and Linux. Is it possible to use the hdd to dual boot? A friend of mine had a ROG with a similar drive configuration and his bios didn't allow him to use the hdd to boot. Is Dell's case similar?

Hi. I am new to Ubuntu. I had previous installed Ubuntu and Window together and was using them for a while. Now that I decided to reset my machine and installed Windows 10 successfully. But when I try to install Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS through USB stick, I am getting this ERROR: bert:can't request iomem region with weird graphics issue. Not sure why this is happening. Early when I installed I didn't face this issue. Also, few threads suggested me to disable secure boot in my bios. But I don't have that option in bios window. So that doesn't help. (motherboard detail: ASRock Motherboard ATX DDR3 1066 Intel LGA 2011 EP2C602-4L/D16) Can someone please help me with this problem. Thanks

I have recently installed Windows 10 on a dell laptop. I partitioned the drive and kept my windows 8.1 build. After installation though I cannot seem to figure out how to boot back into windows 8.1. Any ideas?

Greetings all. (Bits of this could belong in Troubleshooting, too.) For the past year and a half, since I built my most recent system, I ran it using a dual Win 10 boot setup. I have two 500GB SSD drives, one internal, that I use for my work, the other in a SATA 6gbps dock built into my case. (It's sort of a discipline thing, so I'm less tempted to game while doing work. When working, the game drive is disconnected.) The way I did this the first time, was to install Win10 on one SSD as normal, get it up to a baseline setup, then I cloned the drive, and just selected the drive I wanted to use as I booted. This was fine for over a year, but lately, the internal SSD (work one) has been getting lots of drive errors, every time I'd load up the gaming drive, it would complain that the work drive needed to be fixed, and my next boot to the work either wouldn't boot into windows, or would run chkdsk before doing so. Now that work drive won't boot into windows at all. It loads SOMETHING of Win10, as I see those spinning dots, indicating that Windows is loading, it just never moves past that point. Attempting a repair from an install USB does nothing. My first thought was that the SSD may be going bad, but I've run multiple diagnostics in multiple apps, and all say the drive is fine. I can get all my data off of it via the gaming drive (still works just fine!), so I'm ok with having to reinstall Windows, which brings me to my real question. (Though if you do know how I'd be able to reboot the work drive, I'd love to know!) Is there any way to run two Win10 installs on separate drives on the same machine and get them to play nicer with eachother than the way I did it the first time? I realize I had a lot leading up to that question, but I needed to provide some context. Thank you in advance for the help. ----------- PC Specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K RAM: 32GB DDR4 GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 980 MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 (Rev: 1.0) With latest firmware) Boot SSD: 2x Samsung 500GB SATA Storage HDD: Western Digital 3TB HDD Case: Corsair 650D OS: Windows 10 Pro

Basically my goal is to run Windows 10 and be able to dual boot to Mac OS X, preferably id like to be able to install the latest High Sierra but if not its whatever, anything above 10+ i think would suffice! Ive done and tried Mac OS X on VMware and its just so laggy from software to possible hardware updates required on the Mac side of things, i would like to be able to install OS X on my external HDD, to make internal eventually and be able to run it without this lag issue as it takes like 10sec to process any commands like simply loading up an app or program or just the About option. BUILD: CPU - Intel i7-6700k RAM - 32GB of Vengeance® LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 MOBO - MSI 170A GAMING M5 GPU - Asus STRIX AMD R9 380 4GB Storage - Crucial 256GB SSD, Samsung 250GB SSD, WL 3TB HDD, + Toshiba 320GB External HDD (Will Be For Mac OS X, If My System Is Compatible) So, if your able to assist me on setting this up to work properly, or if im even able to if my hardware is compatible id really appreciate any and all support for this. Thanks for your time!

This saturday I formatted my system and reinstalled windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. After installation I was not facing any problem. But this tuesday I installed Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2 x64 on another HDD on my system. I have 2 HDDs one for windows and other for LINUX on the same system. But after a day i noticed that the time of Ubuntu is fine but in Windows it lags behind 6 and half hours from the actual time. As the time in Ubuntu is fine then I think its not the CMOS battery's fault. Please help me fixing this. I have to change it everytime when ever I boot into windows. Hope anyone here can help.

So I have a PC that I built and I have recently moved back in with my parents and took over their office. I was wondering if I could take the hard drive they have in their old PC and run it in my PC without affecting my hard drives, OS, and etc. And if it is possible, would there me an easy way to switch/pick between the two drives without having to go into the BIOS and choose every time I turn it on; they are not super tech savvy so I want to make it easy for them? And am I correct in assuming that I will have to uninstall and re-download drivers that match my build? Also, will doing this have any affect on the speed of my PC (I know it may take longer to boot, but I am more concerned for gaming and everyday operation)? Or should I just leave their PC alone and put it separate from mine?

I am going to build my own Xbox system with all of the 3 OS installed, and I am going to combine Windows 10, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016, and Xbox OS. I am using my desktop and running both Windows 10 and the hard drive with the 3 OS. My build has a Intel core i7-7700K, Two Nvidia Geforce Gtx 1060 that are not in SLI, Two 1TB SSHD, and I have unraid plugged in. Is it possible for me to have both systems boot up, and the three OS work together?

I got a Raspberry Pi and wanted to use it by plugging in my external hard drives into it and excessing those drives through my network through the Raspberry Pi. I know it'll be slow, but I would just use it to transfer pictures basically. The problem I have is that I want to have a dual boot os where I can either boot the NAS os or the default Rasbian os. I bought a NOOBS sd card with the Raspberry Pi and wanted to know how to add a NAS os to NOOBS. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I looked around the forum for a solution but I think my problem is somewhat unique, if this has been solved please point me to it. This is how my storage is set up: I'm running a dual boot system with 2 Windows installed, Disk 0 is almost full and it's split into 3 partitions where Windows is installed in (C:), Steam and Origin are installed in (G:) and I have steam libraries in (G:), (X:) and recently (T:) and some Origin games installed in (X:) and I also have applications installed all over the place. The other Windows is installed in Disk 2 (W:). What I would like to do is to move the Windows installed in (C:) to a new SSD without losing dual boot and without messing with my Steam/Origin/applications I have installed. So the question is what is the best way to achieve this objective? Thanks in advance! P.S. Both Windows are Windows 7

Scenario. I have a Kaby Lake XPS 13 that is dual booted with both Windows 10 home and Linux Mint. Partition Setup. There are three main partitions (plus the boot-loader and what not) on the 256gb nvme drive: For Linux formatted as Mac NTFS For Windows formatted as NTFS For shared documents formatted FAT32 At My Disposal. I have a generic 1tb external hdd that is not in use. The Question. What would be the most elegant way to backup my machine? Ideally in case of failure, I should just be able to clone the partitions back over and be up and running again. Also if I could keep multiple backups (maybe one weekly and one monthly) just in case, that would nice since the hdd is significantly bigger than the nvme drive anyways. Thanks in advance

Since VM seems to be inappropriate for even low-demanding gaming I want to have Windows XP installed along Windows 8.1 64-bit to be able to play TOCA Race Driver 2 one of my first and favorite games I ever played. I am new to the subject and have concerns over mainboard-operating system compability. Are the mainboards out there that support both XP BIOS and 8.1 UEFI?

Hi. My Windows 8.1 has been doing this for a good while but I ignored it given the fact that I rarely use it but I guess it's about time to fix it. Every time I boot into Windows it reboots instantly (no login, no nothing) and upon rebooting it boots normally. Every time. I'm running a Dual Boot between OSX El Capitan and Windows 8.1 using Clover, so basically the computer boots into the selection screen, I pick Windows 8.1, it reboots back to the selection screen, I pick Windows again and it boots fine. OSX works fine, everything works, and so did Windows in the first few months but then this started happening and I got 0 clue why. It also went into test mode but with a quick google search I found a fix for that. They're probably related issues so I thought I mentioned that. If anyone's got any clue on what's going on I'd appreciate some help. My rig is as follows: Intel Core i5 4690k Gigabyte z97x Gaming 3 Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming 16gb DDR3 ram (Kingston Fury something) A metric shit ton of peripherals: 250gb SSD from crucial (split into two partitions for each OS) 2x 1Tb HDD from seagate (one in NTFS and on in exFAT) I cant remember if the PSU is an XFX 550W or 650W All the cooling came with the case (NZXT Noctis 450, 2 intakes on the front, 1 out in the back, 1 out in the top)

I have an old Sony VPCEH25EN laptop currently on dual boot Linux and Windows. My laptop came with Windows 7 Home Basic. It included a Quick Web Access button and a Linux based OS only for browsing the Internet. It went away when I installed Windows 10. The button still responds but reports me that it's missing a software. Now my question is can I assign a normal Windows boot when clicking the power button and a Linux boot whenever I press the WEB button?

I have a Mac Mini 2011 Server that is Dual booted to Windows via EFI and using a few bootcamp drivers. I have recently Increased the amount of Vram to my graphics card {Intel HD 3000} by changing the ".kext" files from 512 MB to 2048 MB. http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-to-increase-vram-for-hd3000-graphics.1766384/ I was wondering if this would be carried over to the Windows OS side? The reason I ask this is becuase I have done it in the past and figured it would carrie over. Due to OSX Sierra resting the change I had made previously {in Mavericks} and resting in back to 512 MB. But what shocked me is when I checked my dedcated Memory on Windows and it only read 32 MB.

Hey guys, I've been looking everywhere for solution, this is actually for my friend's computer, not mine. My current machine: 1. "Nettop" from 2009: running xubuntu 16.04, atom 330, 2GB DDR2, 500GB HDD. 2. Acer E5-574G: dual boot xubuntu 16.04 and win10, 6200u, 12GB ram, 240GB SSD. 1st one is of course not using an uefi bios, so install is really simple, just install and good to go 2nd one is using uefi, but still not hard at all, just put grubx64.efi as trusted in uefi menu **Actual question start here:** My friend's laptop (Acer Z1402-31ZJ)- i3-5005U,4GB RAM,1TB HDD After installing Ubuntu 16.04, it boot directly to windows 10. I know that's normal, so I tell him to add grubx64.efi as trusted. But this is the laptop eufi menu. I have no clue. Seriously. Thanks for the help in advance. Pictures are attached below. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B064pHHFjm71enJhMXZWWkI4UDQ

So this is something I've been racking my brain with for a while now and with my increased usage for the LTT forums because you guys seem to be at least HALF competent I think I'm going to ask it here. I made a mistake involving my duel boot in which I set things up so that my HDD has the windows startup file (forget what the name of it is as I haven't seen it in a while and I can't find it by looking it up now for some reason) and my SSD has the actual OS. Kinda sucks as I never actually ended up using a second OS. This problem came from the installation process of windows 7. Essentially I would like to move the windows startup file to my SSD in a location where it will be detected. Thank you for your help.

Ok so, some of you may know that I made the change to Linux Lite 3.0 because I kinda messed up in Windows as the copy to SSD didn't work at all. So, recently my friends have been complaining that I cannot be seen in Skype (because Skype for Linux is terrible and the online beta does not support video chat yet...) so they wan't me to get windows. I don't want to spend money on Windows particularly when I can use Linux for free and still talk to them in Skype but they just can't see me. That is the only problem they have. So, I have come to the conclusion that PERSONALLY Linux is the superior over the two but I am still going to buy Win10 just for them and because I can't play my favourite game Fallout 4 anymore. Will Windows 10 recognise that it was installed on my PC previously and then activate the product key or will I have to buy the product key again? Second, I still wanna use Linux Lite 3.0 so can I still dual boot but do this from starting with Linux? Thanks, Brennan Price.

Hello all. I built myself a new PC earlier this year (with a bit of help from this forum!). But lately, I've been having issues with my multiboot Windows 10 Pro setup. My PC's case has a sata dock, and I've installed Windows 10 Pro on both my internal SSD, and on another SSD I occasionally dock into my case when I need to boot into a different environment. For the longest time, when I wanted to boot into the external SSD, I'd just select the drive in my boot menu, and that drive's version of Windows would boot right up! Which is exactly what I was hoping for. The problems didn't start until after I installed the 1607 anniversary update on both drives. Now, if I boot into the external SSD, a new windows menu comes up that allows me to select a windows OS to start (also allows me to set defaults and such). Problem is, it's inconsistent. Sometimes, when I select an OS, it'll load it right up. Other times, it'll reboot, I have to select the desired boot drive AGAIN, and it loads up the proper OS without showing the menu. If I don't select the external, it'll boot into the internal drive automatically. I'd LIKE to get it back to where I just had to select the desired boot drive and have that OS load up. But I'd settle for simply not having my machine reboot when the OS has been selected in the Windows menu. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks for reading! Hi there. I am bulding a modest gaming pc that should work also as my personal machine. Meaning I am planning on dual boot (windows for games and adobe; debian for the rest). Thing is, I am trying to decide over a mobo (nowadays Asus H110M-M.2 is on the top) but I am concerned about the BIOS coming with UEFI. Anyone know if it can be changed to legacy? Is there a f--g secure boot? I am aksing this because in the past I encountered problems between Linux and UEFI, and I wanna be sure it won't be the case with the new mobo. thanks.
