I finally got Debian working (which was a nightmare, btw), but the resolution is stuck at 1024x768 and I can't find a way to change it. My monitor's resolution is 1600x900. Is there a way to do it?

OK so I've been trying to set up a home server the last few days. 2 days ago I got Samba working on Debian 8.6 (finally) and I could access the files from the Windows computers at home and I copied the files from our old hard drives over to the network. Then yesterday I shut the computer down to re do some cabling and stuff and I was working on trying to get it so I could access the home server even when not on the network when I realized it wasn't even visible on my home wifi network anymore. Wat. So following some instructions I completely reinstalled Samba with : sudo apt-get remove --purge samba sudo apt-get install samba and then sudo apt-get remove --purge smbclient libsmbclient sudo apt-get install smbclient libsmbclient (Well without the sudo. I already used su so I was root). And I went into the smbd.conf file and edited it to add all my network shares at the end, and... It worked. It showed up. But then completely randomly it disappeared from the network. So I want to make sure, after reinstalling Samba, is this what you're supposed to do, assuming I have folders /home/user/family, /home/user/user1, and /home/user/user2 that I want to setup and users user1 and user2 and both should be able to access family, only user1 access user1, and only user2 access user2 (also assuming I've already made the folders)? smbpasswd -a user1 (enter password) smbpasswd -a user2 (enter password) chown user1 /home/user/family chown user1 /home/user/user1 chown user2 /home/user/family chown user2 /home/user/user2 cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.bak (just in case) nano /etc/samba/smb.conf Now, I'm not sure on what I'm supposed to do with the smb.conf file. Do I just add in the following to the end? Do I delete everything and redo it? [family] path = /home/user/family valid users = user1, user2 read only = no [user1] path = /home/user/user1 valid users = user1 read only = no [user2] path = /home/user/user2 valid users = user2 read only = no Any help is greatly appreciated

Dear People I need help because when i was restoring my IBM think pad t21, i encountered several problems. For ex, when i installed Debian 10 on my IBM think pad, i need to load tp link drivers for my Tp link adapter(model:TL-WIN725N) plus i need to use sudo command to install gnome. But for some reason, it says "sudo: command not found" Which tells me that sudo is not installed. After analysing, i found that i am trapped in every way ( i can't either connect to the internet to download sudo files nor i could use sudo files to load driver for that usb to wireless adapter). If anyone has long experience in linux and way to find out problem for this situation, any help would be appreciated. Thanks & Regards

A Beginners Guide to Debian CLI Based File Servers
Windows7ge posted a topic in Guides and Tutorials
People are often intimidated by the idea of setting up a server using nothing but a CLI (Command-line Interface) but it's not as difficult as you might think. For the most basic setup there's not very much to it. What I'm going to be using for this example: Debian Linux - Ubuntu Server 19.04 File System - ZFS (software RAID) SAMBA - CIFS/SMB (for Windows clients) SSH/SFTP (for remote clients) Index 1. Preparing the Installer 2. Installing the OS 3. Installing Programs & Drivers 4. Configuring ZFS (zfsutils-linux) 5. Configuring SMB/CIFS (samba) 6. Configuring SSH/SFTP (openssh-server) 7. Conclusion -
Hi LTT forums. I recently bought an nvme m.2 ssd so I could dual boot windows 10 and debian 9 on my alienware 15. I intend to mostly use debian but I still need to keep windows for gaming. While windows is detecting the new drive just fine, the debian installer can't detect the drive and when I try opening a shell and trying 'fdisk -l' it doesn't even detect the disk. To be clear, I want to set up a new debian partition and swap partition on the nvme drive and leave the other two drives that came with my laptop unaltered. Anyone have ideas as to why the debian installer isn't detecting the drive?

On the newly installed PureOS (Debian) I am trying to install the driver for the AMD Ryzen™ 5 2400G with Vega 11 Graphics. I tried to follow the video How to Install AMD GPU Radeon Driver in Debian and tried to follow the commands: lspci -nnk | grep -i -EA3 "3d|display|vga" xrandr sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list (main contrib non-free) sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install firmware-amd-graphics libgl1-mesa-dri after the commands and following the video, I am looking at the lspci command and I get the following output: ~$ lspci -nnk | grep -i -EA3 "3d|display|vga" 0a:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series] [1002:15dd] (rev c6) Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device [1002:15de] as far as I understand, before the line: Kernel modules: amdgpu it should say: Kernel driver in use: amdgpu but I cannot make the kernel use the driver and this line does not show up. Any tips on how to fix this? Thanks! lspci:

I am very stumped regarding why I can configure a hardware raid and not have it show up in my console, and if I try to get it to show up, I f**k it up even worse. I am new to Debian and Linux as a whole. It has been a complete upwards curve for me as far as learning all the commands and downloading millions of packages. My Server is a SuperMicro 5017C-MTF The motherboard is a Super X9SCL-F with a Xeon E3-1220V2 and running with 16GB ram I have used the hardware raid controller that is built into the server, the 4 drives are set up in a raid 5. I'm having problems being able to mount them in Debian. Here is my version information if this is needed Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux 9.9 (stretch) Release: 9.9 Codename: stretch Below is the information I have regarding my hardware controllers and drives $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/Ivy Bridge DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 05) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5) 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev b5) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev a5) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation C202 Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05) 00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation SATA Controller [RAID mode] (rev 05) <----------------I'm not crazy! 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection 03:03.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd. My other question is, my /ect/fstab directory is unconfigured and barren. I must be sounding like an idiot, can anyone explain to me what I need to be doing to make this work?

Hi all! Okay, so I’m in a predicament and I need help. I have a pair of ProLiant DL380’s which host my websites, web and cloud services. My Apache server is the heart of it, enabling all of them, but I’ve recently run into a bit of a problem. I am not skilled with Linux, or software for that matter, and while I can export to FTP, use simple commands and do some command line work, I focus mainly on harware. So, I partnered with someone to write code, deploy virtual hosts, and maintain the apache server. He is already a good friend, so he worked for nothing but the credit for his own site and services at www.csoftware.cf He has unfortunately fallen on hard times over the last month, and eventually became unable to assist with my servers. Unable to find someone else to help me who was willing to do it as a favour, I decided to take matters into my own hands, and learn how to make virtual hosts, and all of the other responsibilities that he had. Big mistake. My first mistake was not backing up the server files before performing a large change. My second mistake was messing with it. Now, I didn’t know about webmin until this happened, and I want to use that when I get this fixed I possible, but I need someone to teach me how to use it. So, I tried adding a virtual host myself, the old fashioned way in the daunting command line, and in the process managed to break the virtual hosts, and cause the server to crash every time I log into it via ssh or SFTP. I have all of my sites in /var/www/html backed up, however I haven’t the knowledge to re-deploy the apache server. This is where I need help. I need someone that knows enough about Linux, Apache, webmin, and web servers to help me get my services back up and running, and to teach me how to deploy and maintain my servers. In return, I will offer a VPS with 2 virtual cores, 2-4GB of RAM (You choose), 50GB RAID 10 HDD storage, and unlimited internet bandwidth (Subjective to my broadband speed of 4mb/s download, 0.4mb/s upload. Yes, it’s awful, but for database storage, ssh into linux, etc, it’s fine.) If you need to know any more details about my problem, then please ask. I’m kinda desperate. My VM for the Apache server is running: Debian 9.7.0 Apache 2.X The server is virtualised with VMWare ESXI, which luckily I know how to use. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am trying to connect from one Debian 9 server to another Debian 9 SMB share (access to which work perfectly from Windows 10 PC), and I get an error: SMB share mount error(95): Operation not supported I tried to mount using: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=2.0 sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=1.0 sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/srv /home/srv2/mnt -o uid=1000,username=uname,password=pass,vers=3.0 Without success. I just installed linux mint debian edition 3 (cindy) on a different partition from my windows installation and I went to the default option of putting the linux bootloader on dev/sda. But windows its not listed when I turn on the pc. If I check my bios on the boot priorities I can see that the linux bootloader is set as the first priority and the windows bootloader is set as secondary, if I change this I can boot into windows. Both operating systems work fine. How can I fix this? how can I make windows appear listed on the boot options of the linux bootloader

Hey! I'm trying to make an interactive bot that talks via Twitter through Node.js V.8.0.0. It's 2019 and I don't think the servers for 16.04. (It was the only download I could find for a strictly 32-bit system (Yes... It's an old server. I don't need a new one I don't think.) Could someone please tell me what the old source list for it? I use Ubuntu 16.04 Server edition, w/o any updates. It doesn't have a graphical interface installed since it's a server, and I don't need any security updates since the server won't hold anything important (This is more of a project than anything.)

Update to question: Hello, In order to replace my existing router, I want to use 4-ports mini PC. I don't use specialized OS like pfsence because I will run some virtual machine on the same hardware. I decided to go with Debian 10 and installed Shorewall to manage network configuration. In order to get network connection and config from ISP optical modem via DHSP, I need to configure VLAN100 on my WAN interface. So far, I added vlan100 interface using ip utility. But i cannot figure out how to configure what via shorewall in order to make things work. If someone know where to find a guide (i did not found) or have an idea to configure vlan100?

Well as the title says im new here and dont know where to post this multi cat question, So i will start off by saying that i am looking for an alternative router os that will run on debian alongside my pi-hole setup on the same system. I will be building a small arm based itx based pc with a quad core cpu and 4gb of memory asuming i can get the hardware that is. This is what im going to try getting : https://www.ebay.com/p/116326752 Any ideas on what i should do? Im currently running my pi-hole setup with debian on a socket 775 pc with 4gb of ddr2 and it runs flawlessly. Only reason why i want to do this is because my router keeps messing up with dhcp disabled and finding myself having to reset it at times. Also i wanted a much more power effecient setup incase of power cuts also having a dual wifi setup along with lan support via internal and exturnal nicks coupled with a HP procurve switch just sounds fesable.

I had Windows 10 running on a Ryzen 5 1500X, perfectly fine and stable. I decided I wanted to install and use some flavor of Linux instead, for better compatibility with my other *nix machines. First, I installed Ubuntu 18.10, but found that the system would completely lock up and freeze every 15 minutes or so. I figured it might be something weird with the install, so I reinstalled. Same thing happened, and so I decided to try Debian 10 Stretch to see if it would be more stable. It is, but it still locks up every once in a while and I can't find anything that seems to fit, so I was hoping someone here could help. If you need any more info, please let me know. Thanks so much!

I have BCM43228 wifi card . i cheked these forums https://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=b43 , http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/en/users/Drivers/b43/#CA-cd292c2ceee979f3b581266868c524a1b2c2cb87_2 and found out my card support monitor mode the first one does't list my card cause if i run ski@lnx:~$ lspci -vnn | grep 14e4 05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4359] adn the site did't listed 4359 but the second one did so i tried to enable monitore mode by root@lnx:/home/skril# ifconfig wlan0 down root@lnx:/home/skril# iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor root@lnx:/home/skril# ifconfig wlan0 up and it worked so i did the "injection test" in https://www.aircrack-ng.org/~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~/doku.php?id=injection_test and it gives me this output root@lnx:/home/ski# aireplay-ng -9 wlan0 ioctl(SIOCSIWMODE) failed: Device or resource busy 01:28:12 Trying broadcast probe requests... 01:28:12 Injection is working! 01:28:14 Found 2 APs 01:28:14 Trying directed probe requests... 01:28:14 28:16:7F:14:62:48 - channel: 1 - 'salsa' 01:28:15 Ping (min/avg/max): 3.593ms/26.249ms/33.023ms Power: -67.93 01:28:15 30/30: 100% 01:28:15 06:18:41:58:B7:8A - channel: 1 - 'mac' 01:28:16 Ping (min/avg/max): 7.332ms/21.906ms/54.839ms Power: -79.68 01:28:16 28/30: 93% but if i use airmon-ng start wlan0 command or any other tools to turn-on monitor mode my wifi goes out and switches to wired connection root@lnx:/home/skril# airmon-ng start wlan0 Found 2 processes that could cause trouble. Kill them using 'airmon-ng check kill' before putting the card in monitor mode, they will interfere by changing channels and sometimes putting the interface back in managed mode PID Name 625 NetworkManager 722 wpa_supplicant PHY Interface Driver Chipset phy0 wlan0 b43 Broadcom on bcma bus, information limited (mac80211 monitor mode vif enabled for [phy0]wlan0 on [phy0]wlan0mon) (mac80211 station mode vif disabled for [phy0]wlan0) root@lnx:/home/skril# airmon-ng start wlan0 Found 2 processes that could cause trouble. Kill them using 'airmon-ng check kill' before putting the card in monitor mode, they will interfere by changing channels and sometimes putting the interface back in managed mode PID Name 625 NetworkManager 722 wpa_supplicant Requested device "wlan0" does not exist. Run /usr/sbin/airmon-ng without any arguments to see available interfaces as you can see if i ran the command again it just says wlan0 does not exist . beacuse of this i can't use any other tools like airgeddon, etc even if i turn-on monitor mode using the first method it just resets when i open airgeddon and wifi goes out the moment i start airgeddon

Wow it feels weird to be asking for help on here... Usually it's the other way around. so, here's what's going on: installed debian 9.4 on my soon-to-be home server relevant components here are the Asus Maximumus VIII Impact motherboard, and the Qualcomm atheros QCA6174 controller. System works fine, except that I cannot use wifi. the controller IS detected, and has A driver loaded in the OS, but the driver doesn't seem to be correct, as it won't show if you want to list network devices (i.e. ip link show) below is the output of some pertinent commands ( i have ssh access right now, at work) any ideas? thanks if you got any
