Hi everyone, I am working on someone's 7 year old Western Digital external hard drive. She cannot access her data. The power light turns on and it seems to communicate with the OS enough to update drivers, but cannot access the data as the device doesn't appear under My Computer. Currently testing it with a Vista machine. It seems it only functions with USB 2,0. Initio drivers up to date, but yes, still cannot access data. Any other thoughts? It would be nice to retreive the data if possible. I don't know if there are more thorough means of retrieving the data that I'm not aware. Thanks for any help.

Unsurprisingly, the hacking group behind the release of NSA secrets which led to the WannaCry ransomware attack, Shadow Brokers, now plans to provide zero day exploits as a subscription service. It can be had for $21,000 per month. While ransomware can be lucrative for criminals, WannaCry did not net huge profits for the attackers. It did, however, wreak havoc on unpatched computer systems which were susceptible to a vulnerability in SMBv1, namely Britain's National Health Service. To subscribe to the service, the group is using the cryptocurrency Zcash which claims to be more anonymous than Bitcoin. The group promises to release new Zero Days every month as part of the service. This was bound to happen. Once criminals realize how lucrative these exploits can be, this is the logical next step.

Hello! I just migrated from a Windows 7 PC to a Windows 10 one. The installation went smooth and i have downloaded all available updates and drivers for my hardware. I just noticed that Windows 10 boots slower that Win 7 and on the other hand, shuts down faster. Is this normal? Moreover, i noticed connection lags while playing my usual games (CS:GO, Dota 2, etc.). Is this caused by the OS? How do i fix it? Software Affected: Most games on steam, other standalone online games. Specs: Windows 10 PRO 65-bit AMD A10 7860k Black Edition 4.0 Ghz Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4GB @ 1866mhz Dual-Channel DDR3 Seagate Barracuda 320GB HDD 7200rpm Palit Geforce GTX 1050 StormX 2GB GDDR5 EMAXX FM2+ iCafe Motherboard Seasonic 700w PSU Deepcool Gamma Archer CPU Cooler 3x 120MM LED Case Fans Thanks in advance!

Source: https://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2017/05/eve-online-citizen-science-exoplanets/ A project. started by Dr. Michel Mayor, who discovered the first exoplanet in 1995. It uses 'citizen science' to gather data inside the game Eve Online. Implementing the idea into the game it puts the stat loving Eve community to work benefitting scientific research. Will this really work? This step into exoplanet discovery is actually the second iteration of the project. The first iteration was focused on the human proteome and has seen players classify over 28 million protein cells. How will it work? Players will play mini games that show then the luminosity curves of stars (Light level). Dips in the brightness will be noted that could indicate exoplanet(s) passing in front of them. The data will then be vetted if at least 5 different players report the same thing. Will players get on board? Eve players <3 boring repetitive tasks. The Space Pope is backing it. (He's also a NASA JPL employee). Gearbox is also on board for Borderlands to implement something similar This is such an innovative use of the millions of productive hours that games could generate. There's effectively no difference between fantasy space data and real space data so why not do a bait-and-switch. I really hope this idea takes off, it'd be like a more accessible and fun Folding at Home.

I have a WD My Cloud, attached to my network that I want to use as a plex media server. We only have a 1tb download/upload limit so I don't want to upload 3tb of movies and music to My Cloud and go way over the data plan. Could someone that already owns one of these devices please let me know if uploading/downloading within the same network would up and bandwidth? I tried plugging my hard drive into the My Cloud its self but when I tried to connect to it, it showed up as offline.

Privacy is now a commodity. Congress has just voted to throw American's privacy rights out the windows95 with SJR34, "a resolution that allows Internet Service Providers to collect, and sell your sensitive data without your consent or knowledge". ~ https://www.gofundme.com/BuyCongressData?d=153161068 This effects all of us (whether you are from the US or not), the go fund me above was not started by me, but is the only immediate solution to this problem that we all face. Anyone that is well versed in preventing ISPs from collecting your data, please share your methods here.

Hey all, So, I work for an up and coming internet based studio, and we recently attended an event where we interviewed many key people in the community. Long story short, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally deleted the source video for the interviews and they were not backed up anywhere (a stupid mistake, I know). I used the EaseUS data recovery wizard in an attempt to recover the files and it technically recovered them, but I'm only able to play/use the bad interview takes (go figure ) and the rest are in some kind of corrupted state. I'm using a Windows 10 machine and the files came off of an SSD. Is there any way to go into the code with a text editor and change the directory header or what not?I've exhausted most of my knowledge and am at my wit's end. Any kind of help is appreciated.

I gathered some data about myself. The fields with a white back are the ones clearly available already and the fields with an orange back are the ones I derived from the white fields or manually or from other sources. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to see more data about our forum users or ourselves. Especially the posts per day would be something I'd like to see on all users by hovering a mouse above the nickname or something. That'd give a clearer image from their activity. I am thinking of getting an SSD. My current hard drive speeds are brutally slow*. Is it as simple as copying all of my root directory (C:/) to the SSD? If I boot it up will it still load windows after doing this? I was thinking that I might have to create an ISO and load it on like that... Thanks, djtravz *Sidenote: I am pretty sure of this because over time of having my computer it has slowed down in boot speed. 30s - 1min - 5min (current)

Hi all! First time posting the the forum I have to process data in a software package called MassHunter and it can take up to 15 min to process a large data set with the computer that came with the GC/MS (HP Z400 Xeon W3520 Quad Core Processor, 8GB of 1333 MHz ECC RAM, 500 GB SATA HDD) My thought is that more cores, more RAM, and a SSD would decrease the processing time. My proof of concept PC is a HP ML350 G6 server with dual Xeon 5560 2.80GHz, 48GB of 1333 MHz ECC RAM and a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD running windows 7 PRO. The SSD cost more than the whole rest of the server combined but I think it was worth it. With my new server I have decreased the processing time by 50%!!! That is great but I think I can get more out of it. The software uses all 16 threads (8 per CPU) but it is only utilizing 20% +/- 5%, the RAM maxes out at 8GB and the SSD is running at most 20MB/sec. How do I squeeze more out of my "Processing Server"??? Thanks for the help, Jonezy

Hey guys, My mother is getting her Doctorate in Chemistry. And would like a laptop so that she could work while on the move. I was wondering if you would have an idea what specifications would work well for statistical analysis of chemical data and small use of photoshop. My main concern is if there is a need for a graphics card in the build. Any recommendations are welcome Thank you :-)

Source: http://www.pcmag.com/news/349328/web-of-trust-browser-extension-cannot-be-trusted If you have Web of Trust installed in your browser or on your mobile device, it's time to remove it because they have been spying on their 140 million users. If you don't know what Web of Trust is, it's a browser extension and android app which will tell you how safe a website is, based off of community ratings. I used this extension a lot and for me to find this out really did shock me. I've since removed the extension and highly advise others to do so. So, my system seemed to be a little unstable here lately so I checked to see if I needed a BIOS update, which I did. So, I applied the update and it was fine. My tower rebooted, but couldnt load my OS. I went to check the BIOS settings and realized that they had been reset. I put everything back the way it was, and reenabled my RAID config. I reboot the system and still nothing. I checked my volume and it said that it failed. I tried to recreate this volume without deleting data so the system might recognize it, but it wanted me to delete the data. I have some crucial files and my OS on there. I really hope I can get some help on this. Thanks

To preface, I'm just going to say that I get very anxious when it comes to my data storage and I fear losing stuff I've worked hard on when migrating/changing out hardware. I currently have a 120gb SSD and a 1TB HDD. The SSD holds my OS and a few programs, while the HDD holds the majority of the programs/games/media/drivers. Now that I have a new 1TB SSD, I would like to use it to hold the OS and all of my programs/games/etc. and I would like to reserve my HDD for strictly media, documents, and other data not directly involved in using programs and software. I have been told to unplug both of my current storage devices and load the OS on to my new SSD as a clean Windows 10 install, and then later plug back in the older storage devices to reformat the 120gb SSD and to uninstall programs from the HDD and reinstall them onto my 1TB SSD. Is there a more elegant way for me to uninstall/reinstall/migrate my programs and their files without losing them? (I ask this only because I have some large, unfinished Ableton Live and Photoshop files that have their resources/programs split between the HDD and SSD). And/or is there a good way to set up both my SSD and HDD so they stay organized for my purposes? A simple step by step guide would be very helpful, as most of the guides online are for smaller SSD and HDD combos. Thank you very much in advance!
