A few of my friends and I are thinking about building a mining rig. Is the market good right now? we would build about a 600-800$ machine. With AMD 6990 or AMD 7990. Any suggestions on hardware and if now is a good time to start this project? Thanks -Nolan

Questions by a member of the forum. "Can you please explain this to me? I can't find out exactly what they are." (In regards to Folding @ Home, Bitcoin mining, etc.) My answer: I have literally no idea what Folding @ Home is beyond "It's a computer set up to do calcuations for the purpose of scientific discovery/understanding." Example: If there's a DNA genome that needs to be sequenced, which would normally take a super computer to do, and the scientists lack the hardware to do it, they can use Folding @ Home groups as if they were one big super computer to sequence the genome for them. That's at least how I understood it, though I could be very wrong about that. YMMV As for Bitcoin mining, I know a bit about that. But it's an essay almost. I'll put it in a spoiler.

I've been mining in pools for a while now, but wanted to learn how to solo mine scrypt coins. I know it has something to do with the wallet, but if anyone could write down the steps, that would be great.

People keep whining about new coins and coins based on memes or silly things. But you obviously don't know what you're talking about because dogecoin has a 60million dollar market cap at the time of this posting. Many people only know about altcoins because of dogecoin. And then consider Auroracoin, who's market cap has increased 10 times in like a week and was "just another coin" as people kept saying. The fact is, people wouldn't be making coins if there wasn't an incentive to do so, which means the demand is increasing. The more coins we have the larger the reach. Soon an entire country will have cryptos (Iceland). Will this sudden injection of coins cause a decrease in the price? Probably. But this will also get more people comfortable with the idea of cryptocurrencies in general which will probably help all other coins including auroracoin in the long run. Altcoins will probably have a hundred billion dollar plus market cap only a few years from now...possibly higher and possibly sooner than that. Getting upset at someone who creates a random coin that you don't care about is even more silly than them creating that coin. If you don't like it DON'T USE IT! Don't trade for it. Simple as that. http://www.grumpycoins.com/ http://auroracoin.org/

So I got an email from Aria PC today, saying they will begin to accept BItcoin from Monday, and Scan Computers UK also have just begun accepting Bitcoin as posted here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/111897-scancouk-now-accepts-bit-coins/. Aria also have begun selling GPU array frames for people to use in mining rigs. Stackable Mining Frames http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Cases/Bitcoin+Frames/BitCoin+Mining+Rig+Frame+?productId=59651 Sources for news. http://www.coindesk.com/leading-uk-computer-retailer-scan-accepts-bitcoin/ http://www.scoop.it/t/coinboard/p/4015530644/2014/02/07/aria-pc-technology-accepting-bitcoin-as-payment-from-monday-aria-pc-technology I'm not sure what to make of this, they might have issues with people mining coins and immediately dumping them into these retailers for more cards, but then people could just exchange the coins for money beforehand.... I don't know what their game is really.

Hi, I have a question: Why should you be able to make money yourself like many people are doing with cryptocurrencies? I started mining litecoin a few days ago and told my dad about it today. He thinks there has to be a catch. He says that there's no way you can just 'mine' money. So, can anyone explain me(and him) why it's possible to make money without a catch? Or is there a catch? Thank you!

Ok, so I am a complete noob at cryptocurrencies and mining. I have read about it in the news and on some forums, and heard about it everywhere. My question - is bitcoin, or any other cryptocurrency. still profitable? And how "safe" it is? I was looking into getting into mining, but I am a student in Europe, so I can't spend too much on it, because my studying leaves me little to no time to get a constant, stable source of income (i.e. job). Is trading bitcoins profitable? I know the questions sound a little stupid, but I am a noob. Could someone maybe recommend me a tutorial or something? Thanks in advance!

The Jamaican Bobsleigh 2-man team qualified for Sochi 2014 yesterday, but they didn't have enough money to go to Russia. The pilot, Winston Watt, launched a donation campaign to allow the team to compete in the Winter Olympics for the first time since 2002, as his personal finances weren't enough to pay for the travel and no money was forthcoming from the Jamaican Olympic Foundation (he had invested over 100,000 pounds in the qualification bid). This caught the attention of Liam Butler, who runs the Dogecoin Foundation and is a big fan of the movie Cool Runnings, which brought the tale of the 1988 qualification of the Jamaican bobsleigh team to the cinemas. Within a few hours of Butler's appeal to some friends, 26 million Dogecoin (approximately 25,000 Dollars) were donated, enough to cause the value of the coin to go up by 50% compared to Bitcoin. Source: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jan/20/jamaican-bobsled-team-raises-dogecoin-winter-olympics?CMP=twt_gu I think that it is fantastic that they managed to inspire such generosity from total strangers, and I'm looking forward to watching the Bobsleighing (the ice tunnel events are the only ones I really care for at the Winter Olympics).

I'm new to the exchange of cryptocurrency in Canada and I'm not sure what site I can trust. I have looked at https://www.vaultofsatoshi.com/ but they want to much personal information which I'm not comfortable giving online. I have looked at https://www.cavirtex.com/home and people have said that they take up to 120 days and someone has gotten money stolen from them so I'm not interested. I'n wondering if anyone knows a good Canadian cryptocurrency exchange which can be trusted?

Heya! I figured I'd share some of my mining results from my new 270x with you guys seeing as it's quite a bit faster than what I've been seeing elsewhere (around 450 - 470 ish) and I'm getting 485kh/s My card is the Gigabyte GV-R927XOC-2GD with an ever so slight bump of 1150mhz on the core clock and 1500mhz on the mem clock, a pretty below average overclock to be honest. I guess If I keep buying tickets I'll win eventually I'm running Windows 7 sp1 64bit, and the Catalyst 13.12 whql drivers. Config -w 256 -I 19 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 21568 --shaders 2048 --no-submit-stale --gpu-engine 1150 --gpu-memclock 1500 --lookup-gap 2 Proof Why? I guess the Idea here is to share with you guys, who have the 270x, my config... so If you're a bit short of ideas as to how to improve your hashrate on this card by all means try this! I was getting only getting around 450kh/s stealing configs from the mining hardware comparison thingy. I wish you luck with your future mining endeavors

I read this entire thing through, even though I don't really care about cryptocurrencies. It's an interesting take on the situation though. http://brokenlibrarian.org/bitcoin/

Betacoin??? What is Betacoin??? Well children Betacoin is a very new cryptocurrency that only went live a couple of weeks ago and is now 1TH/s on its main pool at iSpace.co.uk. I don't know how much Betacoin (or BET) is worth at the moment, but it may grow into something big. So start mining NOW as it is really easy. On average it takes a bit over 1 and a half minutes for each block. You can find information on Betacoin here and you can find it's main pool here! So keep MINING!!! Also if you want to send me any BET this is my address: BH9ABR7fzS8BF34rjnewEmfEeBedQ41T3k

Summary According to reports from Iranian media and energy industry officials, cryptocurrency mining has led to electricity shortages in both urban and rural areas. For example Tehran - the capital - has seen daily power cuts over the last two weeks. Insufficient electricity supplies have resulted in the burning of dirty heavy oil products for power, which has caused large amounts of smog across major cities. Bitcoin mining is a big thing in Iran, thanks to tax exemptions and cheap power boosting their profits. However, mining is forbidden by law during times of peak power consumption, with all cryptocurrency miners required to register with the government. This then gives an incentive to not register, so as to not be fined for mining during those times, as well as to use the lower residential electricity price. The spokesman also promised that "illegal cryptocurrency mining centres" would be tracked down and fined for "damage done to the power grid". In fact, over 1600 illegal cryptocurrency mining farms have been shut down in Iran over the last 18 months, which were collectively using over 250MW of electricity. According to estimates by Cambridge university, it is estimated that mining Bitcoin alone is using ~13GW of power worldwide, or ~110TWh per year. This is equivalent to the combined output of thirteen nuclear power stations, or the yearly power consumption of The Netherlands. For comparison: that much electricity could power the UK for 4 and a half months, or the entirety of the US for 10 days. My thoughts As crypto mining gets more and more popular, I can only see this becoming a bigger issue. Bitcoin alone is already using more power than not-insignificant countries, which has significant environmental concerns when people outsource their mining to countries with cheap, dirty electricity. As it says in the article: “massive income is earned by some but people’s share from it is air pollution and power cuts". Imo, issues like this will only accelerate the race to regulate cryptocurrencies. Just not necessarily in the way (or for the reason) that people have traditionally discussed it.
