I've been trying out the trial versions of Avira and Avast antivirus and I cannot get my head around which one I should get. I've been reading reviews that say that currently these two are the top antivirus'. What do you think? Which one has the least impact in performance while being good in protection especially when gaming?

I have been in possession of my current laptop, an Apple 2011 MacBook Pro 15.3", since I was 12 years old (I am now ~16). At my current age, I am well aware of the threats that exist online and, therefore, internet safety procedures are commonplace; however, when I first acquired this laptop, the same could not be said. As a 12 year old with a nearly insatiable obsession over Minecraft, I would often stray onto less reputable sites looking for mods & what not, and often I would subsequently fall for now stupidly obvious phishing scams like those "YOU ARE THE 999,999th VISITOR" pop-ups & misleading "download" buttons in ads. After nearly 4 years, I should probably not be worrying about viruses so much, considering the computer brand I use is somewhat rare in areas that authors of viruses actually intend to infect (the business world), that most of the viruses I was exposed to during that period, if any, would not still work on newer versions of OS X, and that I do not plan on making purchases with a debit or credit card on this computer. With those three complications out of the way, the only problem I still see is that, as of last year, I have an established email account, one used to sign up for classes & for managing business inquiries. As I am sure one can understand, I would rather not find that my choice college somehow received an assortment of porn links in an email with my name on it. Therefore, due to my past and the significance of this email address, the prospect of having an extra layer of security over my computer comes across as a decent idea. I do not plan on inheriting my father's remarkable paranoia, but instead downloading something as simple as AVG antivirus for Mac. Pondering this proposition triggers two questions: - #1: if (most) of my dangerous browsing days are behind me, is there still reason enough to justify installing such an application on my computer? - #2: if the previous answer is yes, would AVG be the ideal choice, or are there better options? Hey guys, since my Norton antivirus subscription just expired, I looked for other antivirus programmes, as I heard, that Norton has some severe malware detection problems. Therefore I decided to switch my "security provider", and KasperskyLabs and Bitdefender were the first ones, that came into my mind. As I can't decide which one to take, I decided to ask you guys for a solution. Thank you very much in advance!

I have been using avast for the longest time, but lately its been blocking a malware and it only shows up on avst. I have tried other programs, and they don't detect it. I am assuming I should move on to a different antivirus ( Have malware bites, didnt help for this), so which one would you all recommend?

Hello, Earlier today, I installed Avast Free Antivirus. I accepted the promote for the "Premium Membership" Trial. After updating the antivirus definitions, I was asked to reboot the system. After rebooting, the computer is stuck in a blue screen with spinning dots. Any recommendations? Thanks. That came out of nowhere but Avast apparently has the money to buy AVG and will pay $1.3 billion for it. There is no statement on how it will affect AVG or Avast users. There is no statement on what the plan is going forward except that the combined user numbers will provide more threat data and that they will provide better support for businesses. I'm looking for a free antivirus software. Which is the best one for a cheap/slow computer? Should I use it along with MalwareBytes? Thanks, I'd appreciate the help.

So a bit ago my dad suggested I install AVG antivirus on my PC. I took his advice and installed it. Shortly after my PC began freezing after a short time of booting. It could last from five minutes to two hours without freezing. Judging by the fact that the freezes started right after I installed AVG, I decided to uninstall it. There wasn't any difference made. My PC has froze in the past, but it was never this bad.

Simple question, which do you prefer and why?

So awhile back a friend of mine had her dad buy her a PC and it's a pretty beast machine (except for the GPU), so I after my recommendation, she downloaded steam and I bought her a few games. So her dad goes to install McAfee antivirus on her computer and it has steam show up as a virus. He removed steam and refuses to let her re-download it. I came to the conclusion that it was one of those viruses that make other programs look like viruses and despite her telling her that he is still convinced. Do you guys think there is any information my friend could present to somehow change his opinion and a source for it?

Okay so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on any good free software for speeding up pc performance, any anti malware/virus, cleaning out junk, software updating, Driver updating,or over all maintenance. Currently I use Malwarebytes, Advances System Care by IOBit, and Drive Booster by IOBIt - All up to date and all free versions. It works well for me and my PC is always snappy, but im wanting to try something new because my way isnt always the absolute best and I havnt tried anything new in 3 years.

Which is a better FREE AntiVirus Avira or Avast? (I have Win.10)

Hello everyone, for years I've been using AVG (free edition) myself, but also installing it on pc's I manage for relatives. It's been very good to me without to many problems. Lately (for like a year now) there has been a LOT of pop-ups. It's not only annoying, but it's been causing me problems in the sense that those relatives don't seem to get that they are ads and click them, install trials, then those run out, start bugging them for renewals, so I need to uninstall&reinstall... You get the jist of it. So TLDR; suggest me antivirus, free, no annoying popups. And yes, I know using common sense and windows defender is fine, but you know how it goes with non-techie relatives... I usually install malwarebytes as well for scans once in a while. Thanks, Stef

Hello everyone, I have been primarily a Linux and Mac user for good part of the last 5 years, until I recently decided to build a respectable Windows machine. Now that I am turning my main computing station to a Windows environment, I must ask: how is the situation with malwares and viruses in general on Windows? Assuming I will not be downloading pirate games, movies or anything "suspect", how safe am I using only Windows Defender and Windows Firewall? Also, what would be the best antivirus software nowadays, in your opinion? Detection ratio, regular updates and low system overhead are my main concerns... Cheers,

I have been using Malware Bytes and Windows Defender together. However, I heard Windows Defender sucks, so I want to get a new anti-virus program. But want some suggestions. So please feel free to suggest your favorite combonations, and you can help me out and others who might see this.

So my mom is finally not going to buy Norton antivirus again after years and years of using it, but we don't know what to get now since we've only used Norton. Anyone know of anything good?

So while I know Windows Defender isn't the best functioning antivirus program available, I'm a big fan of the 'common senseTM' antivirus that hasn't yet let me down, and it's faaaar more lightweight than free alternatives (I'm traumatised after using the old clunky Avast for years on an XP desktop with less RAM than a modern toaster). Problem: The problem began on one of my desktops, and the next day effected my laptop as well (both running Windows 10 Pro with all but one update installed). Windows 10 had a popup saying 'Antivirus etc is turned off', so when I open Windows Defender and click 'Start Now', about 1 min later it throws an error 'The service couldn't be started 0x800705b4'. When I try to manually start the Defender service in services.msc, it immediately throws an error 'The Windows Defender Service started and then stopped...etc'. In my Windows Updates, there is an update that consistently fails (KB2267602 Defender Definitions) while other updates install just fine, this might just be because the Defender service isn't running? The problem is exactly the same on the two different computers. Things I've tried: Since viruses tend to go after your antivirus first, I decided to install other antivirus to check if there was anything malicious causing this. Both Malwarebytes and Comodo detected nothing untoward on both machines. I tried running an 'sfc/scannow' and 'Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth', SFC found errors but was unable to fix them (even in safe mode), DISM ran but there was an error with that too (can't remember what it was but can find out again if you'd like to know). Convinced a Windows update broke it, I spent a lot of time deleting update folders and wiping update histories etc. After reinstalling updates and getting everything back as it was, still the only update that didn't install was KB2267602 (it's not installed already by the by). I'm kind of out of ideas other than a full Windows reinstallation (which would be inconvenient as I usually only access the desktop remotely) or *shudder* using some other free antivirus. Any tips in the right direction would be much appreciated

I have a free subscription of 6 months to Bit Defender Internet security 2016 and was wondering if Bit Defender Internet security 2016 has any bugs or issues as it's new? Thanks for any help
