I am dual booting Windowsa and Ubuntu and I want to completely wipe and reset Windows. The D: partition is a common partition to Windows and Ubuntu. Which partititions should I remove? Does Ubuntu also depend on the EFI partition? Will the recovery partition be recreated when I reinstall windows? How do I maintain BitLocker on the C: partition?

Hello everyone! I'm planning to build a new PC for myself next week with the following parts: Which Windows should I go for? I'd use the PC mainly for gaming and video editing. If you've got some advice for me on what could be changed/improved I would really appreciate the feedback! The GPU will be replaced sometime in the near future probably with an 7900 GRE, I'm just using it for now since it was in my old system. Every answer will be much appreciated!

I'm building a new Gaming PC and i need an Operating System for it. I can get a Windows 11 Education code for €12,50. What are the differences between Windows 11 and Windows 11 Education. Does it have the same features? Is it good for a Gaming PC? Can I install it the same as the normal Windows (Windows 11 Home/Pro)?

Am I the only one who did not know about this? So to start with, window 11 have a direct ISO download on their website. But for windows 10, you need to download the creation media tool. Unfortunately, mine was always stuck at 0% progress. So I contacted microsoft tech support to get a direct link for the ISO, since I couldn't remember or if it's already gone. So here's the resolution. Originally, here's what the link would greet you. What you need to do is to press CTRL+Shift+I or look for Developers tool in the settings. Next is to click refresh a few times. After that this is what would appear. With this we can directly download a clean ISO and use rufus to create a bootable.

Sorry for the simplified English. ... Thank you for the best time in the 90s. Thanks for your gaming experience. Now it is time to say: You are the worst OS. I hope you will lose as many audiences as possible. Windows is now the worst OS, not by user experience, performance, or anything software-related. There is something called ideology in modern computer-related software. You can have open-source projects and closed and controlled systems like macOS. And there are windows. The Windows ideology is the worst of all. Let me explain. First. As far as you might know, Intel CPUs and others have backdors; intel ME, for example. Windows itself is a giant back gate. This is not a problem at all; there is nothing to hide, nothing to worry about. Yes, but this is the root of modern Windows ideology. Second, Windows does not belong to you. It will never help you get the job done. Microfoft sees you as a data and data slave. Google has done this with people for years and years—secretly listening to you, collecting data, etc. This is why Windows is literally free. You can pirate (list of illegal pirating methods)... Microsoft does not care; they just gain data profits, as Google does. Yes, knowing this allows you to live peacefully, which isn't a big deal. You are not archlinux paranoid. Thrid. Upcoming subscription model. Yes, it is rumor. But you can see it is a test on the audience. All methods have already been tested in the "365" subscription model. Fourth: data and AI manipulation. This is the upcoming future. Integration and AI assist in making your life simpler. Sorry, no, this has become a more dystopian theme than you can imagine. It is not just letting Ai read letters and find some. It is a way to offer you something that you do not want. Fifth. Microsoft is a legit theft. I won't go into detail about. Thin Ice theme. Stole Minecraft from millon kids; what is the actual F. Microsoft? For me, I'm going to sell my PC. And will be happy with Apple (acceptable kind of evil).

My Windows Experience Index has dropped in the desktop graphic department, drivers are updated from nividia but all I can think of is my gpu is failing and its only 2 years old, it used to score 9.0 but now it is 8.9. Anyone know what has happened? update I have just ran it and now it is back at 9. Anyone with similar problems should update the drivers and retry.

These updates just won't finish, keeps getting error or stuck. Sometimes when i shut down or restart, it shows "Getting Windows Ready" then it'll be stuck there so I have to shut down my pc. Anything I can do?

I have a computer with Windows installed Some days ago, Windows stopped with a BSOD ( 0x0000007A ). I don't know the reason because I haven't added any new device or so for a long time, but this is not the most important now ... The important thing is that when I restart the computer, now it doesn't found Windows and after some seconds shows something like: "Reboot and select proper boot device" So, I restarted the computer again and press F12 showing these entries ( both were created by Windows installer when I first installed Windows ): 1) Windows Boot Manager ( PO: WDCxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxx ) 2) PO: WDCxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxx If I manually select 1), Windows starts correctly The problem is that I must do that every time I restart the computer So, looks like something got misconfigured at boot level Any solution to fix this boot problem? Thanks

On windows 11 your notifications get grouped and you have to click "expand" to see them all. Is there a way to make it so they never group and you can see them all listed separately right away?

This thread isn't about WHY you would run pi-hole on Windows, there are plenty of reasons why and why not, this is a guide for those that want to have pi-hole running on their Windows PC for one reason or another. We will be installing pi-hole on Windows, using Docker and WSL. Requirements ; Windows 10/11 WSL Docker Static IP on your local network for the PC you're installing this on A router or DHCP server where you can modify the default DNS IP on your network (but that can be done manually if needed). ---------------------------------------------------- 1. Activating Linux subsystems ; click the start menu and search for "turn win" to get the "features" control panel application ; In the Windows features, scroll down to "Windows Subsystems for Linux" and activate it (restart required). Once restarted, you'll need to install the WSL 2 kernel from the link below ; https://aka.ms/wsl2kernel Download and run the wsl_update_x64.msi (no need to restart) ---------------------------------------------------- 2. installing Docker; With Docker, as requirement, you'll also need to enable virtualization in your BIOS ! Refer to your MB manual to make sure it's activated. Docker installer ; https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/ Leave the options WSL 2 by default ; Once installed, you'll ne to restart again If you have a warning message about WSL 2 or about virtualization, it means you haven't one of the previous steps including activating virtualization in your BIOS, take the time to review everyting. ---------------------------------------------------- 3. installing Pi-hole Now that Docker is installed, you can install pi-hole by opening a command prompt and typing the following command ; docker pull pihole/pihole Once done, you should get the following ; Don't click RUN right away, we need to configure your pi-hole first. Open a command prompt, modify the following command and run it ; docker run -d --name pihole -e ServerIP=*.*.*.* -e WEBPASSWORD=password -e TZ=America/Montreal -e DNS1=127.17.0.1 -e DNS2=8.8.8.8 -e DNS3=1.1.1.1 -p 80:80 -p 53:53/tcp -p 53:53/udp -p 443:443 --restart=unless-stopped pihole/pihole:latest ServerIP needs to be the IP of the computer you're running Docker on, and as I mentioned earlier, it needs to be a static IP, meaning you'll have to get your router to reserve a specific IP for that PC. There are many ways to do that and many types of router, so if you're not sure, typing in Google you router model + reserve IP should give you instructions on how to accomplish that. WEBPASSWORD is the admin password you want to have on your p-ihole TZ is the timezone, the time zone formats are available here ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tz_database_time_zones DNS1 is your pi-hole localhost IP, then DNS2 and 3 are alternate DNS, I have put Cloudflare and Google DNS but you can put any other public DNS, or you can put your ISP DNS. You can also use your pi-hole as a DHCP server, if that's the case, you'll need to modify the above command to include that, so here's the github for Docker pi-hole ; https://github.com/pi-hole/docker-pi-hole ---------------------------------------------------- 4. setting your pi-hole Now your pi-hole should be running, and going to the URL 127.0.0.1/admin (or from another PC you can type you PC's IP instead of 127.0.0.1) sould bring you to your pi-hole webpage ; You can click Login on the left, and from there modify the settings if needed, if you want to set up your pi-hole as a DHCP server, this is where you can do the setup. ---------------------------------------------------- 5. Fix your router DNS You last step is to go to your router settings and change the DNS, of if you're using your pi-hole as a DHCP server, change the DNS to your pi-hole static IP address, and don't forget to add a secondary DNS (like Cloudflare, Google, or OpenDNS), this in case your pi-hole has a problem, this will make sure your internet doesn't drop if something happens to your pi-hole or the PC it's running on.

Budget (including currency): ~$500 USD Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, DOOM Eternal, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, etc. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I already have a decent gaming PC, built out of an old Dell Optiplex 5040 (with a free Windows License, wow). However, some components are too old and unsupported by Windows 11. When running the installation assistant or PC Health Check, It tells me: 1: Too Old CPU (Intel Core i7-6700, Windows 11 calls for 10th Gen minimum) 2: Mobo doesn't support TPM 2.0 (currently only supports 1.2) I already have: A Fine enough GPU (Radeon RX 570 OC) Storage for my stuff (500G SSD + 500G HDD + 1TB HDD) A crap ton of Peripherals (Keyboard, Mouse, Mic, Headphones, wired controller, External HDD Bay) and a Monitor (An old Dell monitor from 2011). 16GB DDR3 RAM (although we are most definitely replacing that.) What I'm mainly looking for: 10th Gen Intel i7 or newer or Ryzen 5 or 7 of similar power to i7 (preferably Intel so I don't have to reinstall Windows.) 16GB RAM (whither it be DDR4 or 5 depends on the motherboard) A Micro ATX (MATX) Motherboard with a lot of USB connections. (My current mobo has 6 on the back, all of which I use. I can't use the front 4 because they're blocked by the case, and Dell never put any front panel USB headers on the motherboard...) (probably optional) A Better Power Supply (Currently I have a Corsair CX430 (see now somewhat outdated pictures) and it's been fine, but some newer chips require more power.)

I have turned off real-time protections and all other toggles in the Windows security app. Still, this popup comes when trying to run a setup program flagged by Windows as a virus. Is there a way to further override this behavior?

Can I upgrade my Windows 8.1 OS (Single Language Edition) license to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 license? Recently I uncovered a 2013 Toshiba Satellite S50 A with a GeForce 710M and a Intel i5 4th Gen with 1TB HDD. I want to do a clean installation of Windows 10 or Windows 11 on it. Can I avail a Windows 10 or Windows 11 License from the current Windows 8.1 License? I will be doing my best to remove bloatware from the laptop.

I was wondering if anyone knew if you really want a Trackpad on a windows Machine and you already enjoy the Magic Trackpad, is that a good option? Does it work as well or close to how you would expect it to work on mac? Thank you!

Looking for a bit of advice. I just did a clean install of windows as I've been having weird issues for a while. Whenever I'm in the desktop, maybe opening an application or always when I'm in the settings and I go to System then Power, my pc lags a bit and sometimes freezes for a second or two. I have a 7800X3D so I dont think I should be having issues like this. I also have the latest bios and chipset drivers. This has been happening for months now and I've just thought it was normal or maybe a bad windows install since I've changed cpu platform and motherboards a few times with the same windows install. But after doing a full clean install it hasn't fixed the freezing/lagging I'm getting in windows. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my components? I swapped out my ram for a new kit already since I thought it was that but it definitely isn't. Maybe a motherboard issue or cpu issue? So If anyone knows what this could be or if this is actually completely normal, I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

if i build a small computer in a nas case(Please help me find a nas case), put windows on it and use it as a nas with a backblaze pc backup subscription on it to keep all my dta backed up, (I wouldn't need very much bandwidth to it anyway), is it a good idea? What would the specs need to be for such a computer? Would a 2 core celeron be enough along with 8gigs of ram? It would mainly be used for backups. Also, any idea on how i could set up a decent local file sharing program? Windows samba file transfer only works on wondows and is quite crappy tbh, (I would have it backed up to backblaze anyway so i could access all the data from my phone if i need to but, say from my laptop which would be on the same LAN, is there a good way to access it other than making it a network drive?) update: why can’t I find a single NAS case under 400 usd?

I am looking for an OS key for my new gaming PC. I would prefer Windows 11, but I'm looking for an affordable key. Any recommendations?

I bought a physical Windows 10 OS usb/activation key from a physical Microsoft store about 6 years ago. If I replace that motherboard used originally, do I need a new windows key? If it is permanently tied to the original motherboard, what’s the best source for an another genuine, physical Windows 10 key? I don’t want to go to windows 11. There are no physical Microsoft stores in Houston anymore, that I know of. Any advice? If I’m spending the money on a genuine key, then I want the convenience of having a factory iso file boot drive.
