  1. Pretty much anything is better than the one I'm using at the moment
  2. That didn't even cross my mind. But done Thx
  3. I know, i know. I was just curious if there's a better way. It's annoying, that's all.
  4. Hi, Well it appears that I've broken windows. I had an install of windows 7 on one SSD and an install of Windows 10 on another, but it annoyed me that the documents / download / pictures / other folders where i save stuff and also the default save place for things were different. So I decided to move both of the "Users" folder to the same place (i now realise this was a bad idea) A few hours later, booting into command prompt and moving the folders and creating symlinks to the new place and I'm unable to login onto either OS... I have an image of my Win7 install and I only just installed Win10 so I don't really care about saving / recovering the information, but I was wondering what the best way to install two OS's, to have the normal, user accessible files available to both. I think moving the files to the exact same location has screwed up all of the installed programs (especially if I installed the same program on both OS's). I know I can move the documents, pictures, downloads folders to where ever, but most programs default their save path to "../Users/[PC_name]/" as a default save directory, which I wanted to be the same place. I have two Samsung EVO 250Gb SSD's. Would you suggest: A. partitioning one and installing both OS's on it and move the docs / downloads to the second SSD? B. Installing one OS on each. But then what would I do with the user folders? (documents for both on one SSD, and pictures on the either etc?) C. RAID 0 them (to create a single partition of 500Gb), then partition it into two, one for each OS? (has the same problem with option B) D. RAID 0 them, create three partitions, 100Gb for each OS and a third of 300Gb for docs/pics/downloads folders? E. other??? Thanks heaps AusTempest
  5. Did you post this in every thread just to up your post count or something?
  6. No other opinions? Is that raid card ok? (why is the other twice the price, what does it do extra?) I have no idea what PSU to get. I just googled high efficiency at low power and that up as a good one for 200w loads. Any other ideas? I don't think any of the cases there are any good, there either too small for expansion of HDDs later, or waste tonnes of space leaving room for a graphics card that I'll never put in this build. That was the cheapest xeon CPU I could find on sale in Australia, any good at all? Overkill for a home NAS? I wanted a supermicro motherboard, but couldn't find one for sale anywhere. Has anyone used any server motherboards from commercial OEM's before? Is the cheapest ECC ram ok to buy? Is 16g the right amount?
  7. Hi everyone, I've been told by she who must not be named that i am to invest in a NAS to prevent another HDD failing and her loosing all her stuff again. I'm weighing up a prebuilt (Asustor 608t, Synology DS1813) vs a custom made PC, so my budget for this build (excluding HDDs is $1000-$1500 AUD). No peripherials, no monitor, prices in Australian Dollars. I'd like the system to easily run a Plex server with transcoding two 1080p stream simultaneously, but i'd be happy with only being able to trasncode one. I really can't find much info on suggested build apart from basics like ECC memory, lots of RAM for FreeNAS, and choosing server hardware for 24/7 ops. I'm also very aware of power consumption, as this will be running 24/7, i don't want $100's upon $100's of additional electricity charges. I've done some googling and come up with the following list of items to choose, as these are pretty much the only ones i could find for sale in Australia. If people have other suggestions of components, or places to buy them, please feel free to suggest. (picture attached, i couldn't figure out how to paste a table in here) Any ideas or suggestions?
  8. thanks for that, I'm putting together a list based on z97 at the moment, when I'm mostly happy, I'll drop by the new builds forums and see what people think. As for the NAS, I still don't know whether I'm going down the pre built or custom route yet.
  9. So I'm guessing that's a no then. Ohh well, thanks anyway everyone
  10. I know i can shove them somewhere or use tape to draw a smiley face on them before sticking them top of the case, but i wanted to actually put effort into my next build and make it all look nice. Everyone who's seen my current case always comments on the birds nest of cables and ad-hoc additions. Just curious if anyone has an Enthoo Luxe / Primo and looked into mounting the SSD brackets somewhere else.
  11. *edit* double post, sorry
  12. Well hello to everyone in the general vicinity i suppose. I ran out of beer an hour ago and copying 4Tb of Data from one HDD to another still has another 20+ hours to go... I've been meaning to drop in here for about 18 months now, but since my better half decided to mix vodka with my PC it looks like i'm on the market for a new PC. I'm going to see the prices and review of the x99 stuff and see what price drops of the z97 are before starting to put together a list. Also 2 HDD failures in 3 months means i have been mandated by she who must not be named that i have to "fix the problem so she doesn't loose another episode of Jeremy Kyle". Personally, i'm quite happy that we lost 6 season of that show, but apparently i'm not meant to think like that So it looks like a NAS is on the horizon for me as well.
  13. This is going to be hilarious, as this is my only working system at the moment (the main one got fried... drunk female, vodka and a PC don't mix) CPU: AMD Phenom 9750 Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA78G-DS3H RAM: 4GB DDR2 PC2-6400 DDR2-SDRAM UDIMM (clocked at an earth shattering 400Mhz) GPU: AMD Phenom 9750 Case: Antec 900 (v1) Storage: System: 200GB HDD ; Storage: 2 x WD Green 1TB PSU: Zalman 750W modular (can't remember specifically) Display(s): ASUS 27" PB278Q IPS 1440p Cooling: a bunch of fans caked in dust that were turned on for the first time in years about three weeks ago Keyboard: Logitech G15 Mouse: Logitech G500s Sound: Speakers: Logitech z5500
  14. ROFL, i was asked this just a few days ago for the first time in another forum. My grandmother yelled at me when i was like 6 or 7 for running around the house and throwing all the clean laundry in the air and she said "Stop throwing the clothes around like a tempest (i had no idea what a tempest was at the time), and it kind of stuck as a nickname between my cousins and I. As for the "Aus" part, Tempest is taken in most forums / accounts / games etc so i stick Aus (short for Australia as i met another person who went by Tempest online once and he suggested Ausempest as a username) in front of it to actually get a unique account name.
  15. Hey, I'm putting together a new build at the moment and i'm pretty sold on the Phanteks Enthoo Luxe case, but i need more SSD mounting options. I do like their SSD mounting brackets, but they only have two mounting options. I was thinking of putting an additional mounting bracket on the side of the 5.25" bay (as i'll be converting it to hold 3x 3.5" HDDs anyway. Who uses optical these days???) or on the reverse of the vertical pillar covering the HDD cages, but i don't know if the phanteks SSD brackets that you can buy separately come with the four required screws/bolts (unlikely)? Has anybody mounted these SSD brackets NOT on the predefined SSD mounting screws? Thx
