  1. There is a really simple way to distinguish people who know how sound works from “audiophiles”. The first group will have probably the most important part of having a good sound - an acoustic room treatment while the latter group will pursue “better sound” via magical cables, magical stones, magical switches etc. and their setup will be in a normal room.
  2. The upper one just reminded me. if you consider yourself an IT pro, but consider that Windows is junk and only Linux is good or vice versa you are just a fanboy and far away from being even close to the professional. Windows has some applications in which it reigns, same goes for Linux. Both are tools and you should choose best tool for the job.
  3. Unpopular opinion: This topic should not have lengthy discussions about someone’s unpopular opinion. Going through pages to find another person’s new “unpopular opinion” is tiresome.
  4. Instagram is useless tool for marketing unless you are targeting specific groups of people who are prone to use it. This also goes for any social network that requires you to have an account in order to check out the contents. Eg. I want to check some local beer store which only has Instagram account as the website, however without account I can’t do jack sh*t. I know that there are sites which allow to check Instagram without account, but that’s not the point.
  5. I would definitely not say that more and more people are listening to podcasts not because they really want to, but mostly because they are pushed into into peoples throats. Spotify started that trend, others are following. In the music streaming service I am using I am getting more and more podcast recommendations, but unfortunately there is no “I don’t give a flying f**k” button. Let’s be honest, even to produce shittiest pop song, some talent is required and there are multiple people in that process. To produce shittiest quality podcast, you don’t need anything except smartphone. Speaking from the ROI point podcasts cost peanuts to produce and can bring huge profit for the streaming services. Just to be clear, quality podcast hosts are talented in their own way, however production is much easier and cheaper for podcasts than for the music.
  6. Very few people care about podcasts and I don’t know why music streaming services are pushing them so hard…
  7. Italian style pizzas are difficult to eat with hands because crust is thin and it can’t support even its own weight. American style on the other hand are easy to eat by hands.
  8. All enterprise grade OS and generally all server/cloud software/services should be in English if you consider yourself an IT professional. Localization of server OS etc. just makes it difficult to troubleshoot and reduces the knowledge base significantly. Also if you want to attract international talent, your organization should use English OS. Just be clear I am not talking about OS which sales/HR/finance etc. teams will have on their PCs, I am talking about server stuff.
  9. Usage of “measurement units” such as eg. school busses, football stadiums and similar BS as main and only “units” should be banned. How TF should I know how long are eg. 3 school busses or 5 city blocks? If you must use those nonsense “units” just use extra 3s and give us the normal measurement value preferably in internationally accepted units such as SI system units which are used in 90+% of the countries in the world.
  10. North American zoning is just a huge BS. Fortunately I am not living in a American suburb. Here, in my suburb there are lots of small businesses, there are convenience stores, small residential buildings, houses, supermarkets, schools and train station is just few minutes away. It is way more convenient and cheaper in the long run to live in suburbs like mine than living in a place where I would have to drive my car almost if I have to go to toilet.
  11. I would say - it depends. That US style huge cup of tasteless dark liquid is not coffee compared to the eg. European cappuccino. However, if we are talking about nice pour over/syphon/Aeropress etc. then we are talking about good stuff. I personally tend to drink dark coffee in the morning and latte or cappuccino after lunch as sort of a dessert.
  12. My previous company had several of tape printing machines and I was able to use them for private purposes as long as the tape cassette was bought by me. So after changing my job I still needed one of those things so I bought one for myself. I used the older model, but this one has Bluetooth connection for using with my phone and USB connection to use it with my PC.
  13. Expensive engagement rings are colossal waste of money. And that "rule” that you should spend at least 2 salaries on the ring is for fools who like to burn their money on practically useless piece of metal and overpriced piece of carbon which won’t hold its valve in 99% of the cases.
  14. Great black metal song with an unexpected twist
  15. Regarding the living cost, I would add that in Japan you basically don’t need financial black hole aka car. Japanese public transportation is among the best in the world and suburbs are not stupidly designed like in northern America so basically everything for daily needs is usually in a walking distance from the home.
  16. EDIT: I forgot about investor visa which is another option, but you must show up with lots of money and present a solid plan (ie making your own company or a Japanese branch of the existing one) in order to get that one.
  17. Then you can’t live long time there, simply said. Obtaining work permit for Japan is not difficult if the employer is your visa guarantor. As people already said, the only other option is to get married. Someone mentioned getting Japanese citizenship which is quite difficult if you don’t know Japanese and Japan doesn’t recognize dual citizenship so you would have to renounce your other citizenship(s). Also, speaking about super long working hours, it is more of a stereotype than a fact. Yes, some companies are like that (aka “black companies”), but most of them are not. It is also worth to add that Japanese have different standards for foreigners so super long overtime is not expected.
  18. Yes, it’s a descender, but also a fall arrest device which means it can easily go up the rope and brake when going down or taking a fall. That makes it ideal for solo climbing where I can rig the rope from the top and securely climb up and do the climbing practice while climbing partners are unavailable. In climbing world that technique is called top rope solo.
  19. Usually used for rope access, however I am wondering if someone here could guess why did I buy this
  20. I am tired of this pronouns trend. I am completely fine if I see eg. male person’s profile which wants to be addressed as “she” and address it so. But is it really necessary to specify default pronouns for obvious cases?
  21. Even if it’s informal why is so difficult to press that shift key?
  22. YouTube shorts is stupid concept. Yes, I am aware that they want to compete with TikTok, but FFS we don’t need more vertical video cancer on the internet.
  23. I am using it just as a job finding tool. I am not checking social aspect of it. In my region and in my field of work it is actually useful and it landed me several interviews and I changed my work thanks to the LinkedIn connection.
  24. I am not concerned when it comes to myself. I believe that I will die long before climate change becomes life threatening. However, I agree that something needs to be done. This post will be covering several points that are not necessary directly connected. My first point would be personal carbon footprint. It is a bullshit concept invented by British petroleum to make average Joe guilty about the shit that they and similar corporations are doing. There are some truths inside that concept, but generally corporations are the source of the problem and mitigation should be done there first. This is connected to the first point, but it seems that lots of airplane companies are asking for extra fees for the carbon offset. Personally, I don’t think that it is a fee that passengers should bear in majority of it. First, I don’t trust that airplane companies will use those funds honestly and that that money will probably end up in the pockets of the board and shareholders. If they are really committed to the cause they would post details publicly and easily accessible. Then I saw someone complaining about China. I agree, they are currently polluting a lot. However, they are also investing a lot into a nuclear research and into a high speed railway network. And then again no one is mentioning US where everything is done through corruption lobbying and where corporations are left to do as they please. In general I can see that China is doing a much better job in the long run than the US. My next point will be regarding the electrical vehicles. They are NOT the solution. They are just temporary patch for the problem. The solution is fast, safe and reliable mass transit. We have that, it is called high speed railway for long distances and light railway for city transportation. Some countries have excellent HSR network. They are cheap (to travel), they are fast, they are comfortable, boarding is super simple, stations are in the city centers and there are no BS ticket prices. And lastly I will take Elon. First, he is not that bad compared to the other US based oligarchs, but basically his ideas are not the brightest in most of the cases. His idea to buy Tesla and make electric vehicles mainstream was actually a good one. I would say that he is responsible for phasing our ICE vehicles. However, his vision is that people don’t want to ride with other people. It is just stupid way of thinking. I live in the country which has excellent public transportation network and I am able to save a lot of money that would otherwise go to the financial black hole know as car. Yes, in some cases owning car is a necessity. I am not talking about singles living in North American suburbs which are victims of shit city planning where you need a car for every stupid thing. I am talking about having a family with small kids and similar. And, to stay ontopic my personal carbon footprint is much lower since I am using electrically powered trains. Also train company that I use the most has just announced that their electricity is from 100% renewables. Let’s go back to Elon’s ideas. Hyperloop - fail, using Starships for transportation of the people instead of airplanes - financially non feasible and extremely dangerous. Solar city - it seems that it never worked. Las Vegas loop - bait and switch, not even close to the original idea. Personally I don’t find Elon that unlikable, however his fanboys are whole another story, but talking about them would be a waste of time and it would go into a huge off topic.
