  1. My bank manager may want a word with you lol
  2. At the moment she has the following: Intel i5 7500 MSI B250M MORTAR 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 ROG Strix 1050ti 4GB Corsair Spec Delta Carbide Case (my throwaway) Not the greatest of setups. It's mainly used for photoshop and university work and could probably use an upgrade. I actually have a spare X570 motherboard so that's how I will justify the 5900x for myself. I'm pretty sure the PSU she has is a throwaway from an old PC so upgrading that would probably be a good idea. Also, I know the case is poor for airflow so a new case will be needed. Look what you've done! I've now got two never ending upgrades
  3. Honestly, Gen 4 because it can, more cores as I do actually plan on getting into video editing when time allows. The only reason I went for the 3600 at the time is because I'm impatient (as you mentioned earlier, impulse control can be an issue for me). If I was just looking at/for things to buy then my Mrs is more than capable of helping me spend.
  4. For me it's either the wallet or my Mrs that says no, only one of those can be negotiated with. My last PC lasted around 6 years but that was a prebuilt Glad to see the pain being felt by others too.
  5. HOW!! I must know the secret to being 100% happy with my machine.
  6. June last year I built my first PC in roughly 15 years and ended up with a capable machine. Fast forward to now... The case has been changed, the CPU cooler upgraded to a 240mm AIO, the GPU changed from a 1660 6GB to an RTX 3080ti 12GB. I've also added a vertical mount for the GPU (needs upgrading to a gen4 type), added an extra 1TB NVMe M.2 drive, looking to upgrade the CPU from a Ryzen 3600 to a 5900x. Will probably need to change the PSU to something a little beefier than a 750W. On top of all that, I also like the look of the Lian-Li AL120 fans of which I'll need 8. Will it ever end? Anyone else on a continual upgrade path with no real end in sight? Has anyone ever finished a build and been happy to stop changing things? The irony is that I don't do much gaming and the PC is mainly used for editing pictures in Lightroom. I had planned to start doing some video editing but that's not really happened yet.
  7. Fair point. Its a retail key. Managed to get it sorted. All is good with the world again. Thanks for the advice everyone, ended up on the phone with some automated woman telling me what to do
  8. I recently built a PC and bought Windows 10. I activated windows on the PC but never linked it to my windows account. Due to some issues I was having I swapped out the motherboard and ram. I did a clean install of windows and youve guessed it... I cant activate windows using my genuine key as its activated against the original hardware. Have I just lost my copy of windows or is there hope? Any help is appreciated.
  9. At a guess, I'd say the green light is just a power indicator to let you know the motherboard is receiving power. Depending how old the power supply is it may just not be able to cope anymore with the demands placed on it when powering up. Try going barebones with it. 1 ram stick, only primary drive and use onboard GPU. Disconnect all fans except the cpu fan and see if it boots (probably won't but worth a try). Also double check all power cables are securely connected. That's as far as I go with suggestions I'm afraid. I'm not overly technical.
  10. *Quick Update* I've not managed to get my Mrs to agree to letting me try the drive on her PC yet but I have rebuilt and have been running the computer without any issues for a little over 24hrs with that drive disconnected. I did try connecting it and the errors started again but other USB drives are fine regardless of USB port used. Hopefully it is just the HDD dying and not a more serious issue. My next step is to get a new drive and wait for the Mrs to go out then use her PC to copy the files over from old to new and say no more about it. I'll most likely get an internal drive as I have loads of space to fill in the case and it'll hide the fact I'm still spending money on it
  11. Almost, I've rebuilt in a new case: But I also have what seems to be a faulty external HDD:
  12. chkdsk showed no errors I ran one earlier and all drives came back ok I fear you may be correct. I will try to convince the Mrs to let me near her PC (she wont be keen). I'm also going to rebuild the system just to be sure there are no loose connections anywhere but I doubt that will change anything. Thanks for the suggestions so far all
  13. I have 237 errors in the event viewer for event ID 154 in the last hour. "The IO operation at logical block address 0x0 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\00000048) failed due to a hardware error" This is pointing to my external USB3 8TB Seagate drive. The PC has recently been built and I have had a couple of BSODs and a couple of system freezes which result in failed restarts. This has happened with the drive plugged into different USB ports on the PC. Is it on its way out or could there another reason for the errors?
  14. I just ran the occt test for cpu for 45mins. Told me I had 146 errors but my temp seemed to stick around 70C. I'll go and read up on the program and try to figure out what I should be doing. Thanks
