SteamOS 3.0 is Arch Based? (Steam Deck)
Go-Kart replied to Go-Kart's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Great input. Thanks guys. -
One of the things that piqued my interest with the announcement of the Steam Deck was the OS it was running. Many will be familiar with SteamOS, at least as a concept. Since inception, SteamOS has been a Debian fork. However, SteamOS 3.0, which the newly announced Steam Deck will feature out of the box, is listed as being "Arch-based". I've only dabbled with Linux, know the broader differences between Debian and Arch, and know that I'll end up a Linux boi one of these days. I don't know enough about Linux to be able to grasp the significance of the shift from Debian to Arch but I know it is significant. What's more, there doesn't seem to be anyone else talking about this thus far. Anyone care to educate me on the choice our man Gabe has just made? Further, would anyone care to make some educated guesses on what it means for the future of gaming on Linux (Arch in particular), considering the healthy pre-orders of the Steam Deck?

When removing your keycaps rips out the stems on your mech :'(
Go-Kart replied to Go-Kart's topic in Peripherals
Yeh, bought direct as they have a customisation service. Up to now it's been amazing to use everyday. I've heard of tight tolerance keycaps ripping out stems with them when removed before but I've never heard anyone say what to do if it happens to you. I've sent them a video now so hopefully they'll understand. I'm willing to have a go at fixing it myself but because it's in warranty and my soldering skills are 15 years rusty... It'd save all the hassle/cost/carbon footprint/time of shipping it there and back again. -

Pictures don't really show anything. Though the arrow key stem is certain wonky. I've heard of this happening to others; removing low tolerance keycaps pulling out stems - no solutions though. If I get Varmilo's blessing to desolder them, it'll be interesting to see if the switches are salvageable or they're just mash potato inside. -

I've contacted them but I fear the language barrier is slowing the process down a little. I have tried to tell them that I'm willing to attempt a fix myself, maybe if they sent me some spare switches but as I said, the language barrier/different time zones, etc.. -
Had my lovely Varmilo since Feb now; love using it every day. Decided I should clean it, started removing the keycaps and the stems of the "W" and "down arrow" keys half came out and broke through the top of the housing of the MX Clears. Pushed 'em back down but the keys are now jammed and don't move/register. What so you mech brethren!? Have I got to desolder and replace those two key switches or is there something I'm missing? It's a VA87M. Adam

Mine was in reference to the fact that people will likely already have a capable phone but not a "real" VR headset. However, having now tried this phone/VR headset thing myself for the first time yesterday - it was ropy! I don't know how much of that was settings and how much was my GPU. I didn't really have a chance to optimise the experience since it took me a while just to get it working but even the hassle that I had to go through to do that ...maybe I should just buy a used Vive

Don't think I've seen this yet but: Budget VR using smart phone? You can buy a used OnePlus 7 Pro with a big 90 Hz, 1440p screen for like £300. Moderate rig + smartphone = best budget VR in 2020?

@WaggishOhio383 - thanks dude.

@WaggishOhio383, I'm looking at getting a second hand wheel myself after discovering the joys of Forza Horizon 4. Do you know if a G25 is compatible?

Debian - you got me. Actually useful; nice. -
I'd probably lean towards less being more. Tech Jesus did a good video on that case too:

2005 G4 iBook - full working order too! I just remastered it for sale. Surely someone would have a use for a fifteen year old Mac Book!?
