  1. Turns out, it was AVAST internet security trial software. When I uninstalled the trial and restarted I was able to connect to the internet again. I guess something with the service was causing me denial of access to the DNS.
  2. Dude, your posts are pure gold
  3. It successfully flushed the cache, but it didn't improve the situation. I'm going to try a full virus scan with avast to see if it catches something that it didn't catch on its scheduled scan.
  4. So to try and fix a number of issues with my computer I tried updating my motherboard (MSI g55 sli) bios from the version that came with it to the newest one (1.7). Only problem is that the manual says I need to wait for the computer to restart after it reaches 100%, and it's been at 100% for the last two hours. should I just hit the restart button and hope for the best? before I started, I backed up my bios to a different USB stick.
  5. I tried seeing if updating my bios to the most recent iteration would possibly help. Now my bios is stuck at " updating bios ME..................................100%" It's an MSI motherboard. This is actually the first time I've ever tried bios flashing. The manual says that I need to let the computer restart on its own. Do you guys think I should just go to class and see how it looks when I come back?
  6. My computer has been unable to connect to my router. Most other devices have no problem, but my tower in particular has been getting denied access to the router, despite showing that it is in fact connected, albeit with limited connectivity. I've tried rebooting the router, my computer, and I've checked to make sure my IP and mac address weren't added to a black list. Here is a snip of my router's logs from when I tried to connect. As you can see I've blurred out the mac address for security reasons (and the internal IPs don't matter), but I will say that the mac address shown for my computer is not the same on the router's logs as it is on my computer's system info. I have no idea what any of this means, just that something is causing my computer to be mistaken as a device that is not allowed to connect to the network. I've yet to try updating my wireless card's info, so I'll try that and update the post.
  7. Welp, this is <assumption> America </assumption>, so you can do whatever the fuck you want to yourself and it's no one's business, not even your parents' if you don't want it to be. On that topic though, A true American hero once said that knowledge is power, so you should make sure you know exactly what you're getting into. Nicotine will still fatigue the receptors in your brain, regardless of form, and on top of that you've just added another financial dependency to your life. Also, vaping is not healthy or safe, just not yet proven significantly dangerous. There's a big difference there. On top of this, inhaling high temperature vapor is not a good thing to do, and I know. I'm Persian and Persians have a ridiculous habit of drinking burning hot tea, and while the tea doesn't feel hot in the esophagus, it still causes considerable damage and has caused Persians to have a considerably high rate of esophagus cancer and stomach cancer. I don't have this problem because I oddly enough hate caffeine and therefore tea, but the point is that you can't feel the damage being dealt to your internal organs because the nerves there are built to detect different kinds of stimuli. Inhaling the hot vapor could have the same affect. Keep these things in mind when you consider what to do next. Now, none of this is to say that vaping is a horrifically bad vice. Things like gambling, drinking, stress eating, and violence are much worse, so vaping to keep yourself distracted from certain aspects of life is actually one of the more responsible choices. Just be courteous to others, don't vape in your car while driving, and don't force other people to have to inhale or smell your vapor.
  8. The Computer I built for my girlfriend has been having a weird problem with itunes. For some reason, on the desktop alone, Itunes refuses to allow her iphone 4s to sync her music because her phone does not have enough storage. The odd thing though is that she has plenty of space for storage and that this only happens on the desktop I built for her. admittedly, the PC is not activated and is past the 30 day trial thing. I wanted to see what the pricing for windows 10 would be compared to other windows versions before buying an activation key, just to see if it will be cheaper to buy windows 10 or a previous version and then upgrade for free. I was wondering if anyone could claify whether this is a pc problem, driver problem, itunes problem, iphone problem, or windows problem. A google search only revealed a storage problem associated with downloading the ios 8 update, but that isn't what we're trying to do here. Just sync some music. Thanks for the help.
  9. Not in a usb port, but I do have a pci wireless adapter. I could have I had turned off waking up on network activity but I can check that again.
  10. I've been trying to make this work but VLC always says it doesn't have the aacs library. the directions didn't make much sense, so I'm going to look up a video.
  11. Yup. They are pretty handy if you like to play old videogames that require discs. Also good if you like to keep physical discs instead of flash drives or external hard drives.
  12. I've owned a blu-ray disc drive for a while now, and when I installed it I only wanted it to write 25+ GB to discs, but now that I've upgraded to a 2560X1080 monitor I want to start watching movies. The thing is, I understood after I bought the ASUS blu-ray disk drive that the blu-ray codecs came separately and that I'd have to either buy a disc drive that came with drivers containing the codecs or I'd have to purchase software with the codecs, and all of this because the blu-ray standard was made by Sony. However, some friends told me that I didn't actually have to buy the codecs to watch blu-ra movies on it. Can someone please clarify what I have to do to start watching blu-ray movies on my computer? If I do need to buy something, is there a free alternative?
  13. DAMN. I have to go to fremont ASAP and stock up. 8 SSD RAID, HERE I COME!
  14. My computer has started this weird behaviour of turning itself back on after I power it off. What happens is it turns off normally, but then it power itself back on and boots back up. The only way to get it to stay off is to push the power button before it enters post. I've noticed that USB devices sometimes remain powered after it turns off and before it turns back on. I do have fast boot and wake up on usb device enabled in my bios, but this probablem started much later. Does anyone out there have any idea why this is happening? Is it a bios thing, a virus thing, or a hardware thing? Is my computer just trying to find Sarah Connor? Hardware: Motherboard: msi g55 sli CPU: i5 4690K (stock speed) GPU: gigabyte windforce gtx 780 GHZ edition RAM: 4 X 4GB kingston hyperX 1600mhz memory PSU: corsair 850HX OS drive: 2X 128GB corsair GS SSDs Data drive: Western Digital black 1 TB
  15. Hello there, Internet! Recently, my trustworthy dynex 1080P monitor died on me, and I need to replace it. I want my new monitor to fit in a small space, but I also want enough room to work with multiple windows open and still be able to see each window well (mostly, this has to do with excel and word when doing lab write-ups). I've thought about getting two small monitors, and maybe putting them on top of each other, or rotating 90 degrees and putting them side by side, but that would require thin bessels to not get annoying while gaming. Something I've been looking at are the 21:9 aspect ratio monitors. I like how they use a continuous panel and still give you more room to work. I've mainly been looking at the ones with 1080 vertical pixels, since I would be gaming on it, and I'm only running a single gtx 780, So I'd like to stay within its range of power and good graphics. The thing is though, I don't really know if they're worth it. All I have to go off of are reviews since I can't just rent a monitor. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me their own impressions of using a 2560 x 1080 21:9 monitor. Maybe tell me if they're worth it, or if there's a better solution for the same amount of money. I know LG has some great offers, but I'd like to stay within a budget of $350 and a space budget of 29" (diagonally). Also, I'm cool with buying used or open-box to lower the price. Right now, these are a few that I'm looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009554 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005597 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G2HZ2622
  16. About one-and-a-half years ago I bought a func MS-3 mouse as an upgrade from a friend's old death adder. I really like the func MS-3, but the sliding pads on the bottom of the mouse have been showing some unusual wear. On two of the pads, it appears that some thin plastic film covering it has come loose and essentially "bubbled" creating an uneven surface. On the other pads, the surface just looks like it's been lightly sanded, which is normal from what I've experienced. The bubbled parts of the pads sometimes cause the mouse to be hard to move. I was wondering if it could maybe be possible for me to sand down the two bubbled pads using fine grit sand paper. What do you think would be the best solution?
  17. I've been trying to get an ad hoc network to work with my friends for a car ride, but I'm not quite sure how to get it to work. I've set up the ad hoc network on a windows 7 laptop, and I've tried to get a lan network game of minecraft to work (I thought it would be the easiest) and while I can see the game and try to join it, the connection times out. Does anyone out there have experience with ad hoc network gaming?
  18. For anyone wondering, here's a guide to creating an ad hoc network on windows 8: http://www.iphone-to-ipad.com/blog/create-ad-hoc-wireless-connection-windows-8.html
  19. This sounds awesome, I'll definitely try it! I looked it up, and windows 8 can create ad hoc networks, but they require some command prompt tom-foolery. It does work, though.
  20. Same boat, although I'm 19. For me, videogames were always an inspiration. Seeing how humanity can evolve in Halo, to the puzzle-filled fields of Hyrule, to learing boolean logic from redstone in minecraft, videogames were always a way for me to step back from the limited view I would ever be able to have in reality and see how things could be, and not how they are. This is an incredibly important skill, and I believe it has helped me. My solution is a bit passive aggressive, but start playing a game that requires thought, something with easy mechanics to learn (like portal) and when your mom lectures you, challenge her to prove to you that what you are doing progresses no skill and can be done by anyone right away. Ask her when she last had a sense of accomplishment that lifted her spirits. Ask her when she last read a book and felt like she was being involved in the story, or at the very least how often it made her smile. I feel like these questions really target the arguments that videogames are pointless. And if that doesn't work, turn subtitles on and show her that you can read and play videogames at the same time.
  21. You'd be surprised how much opposites attract. Most cases where someone dates someone else who is essentially the same don't work out. Anyways, your writing is of a much higher level than quite a few people that I know, so don't be too hard on yourself about your academic performance. Frustration is the biggest blockade to success. If you're nice to her, and just talk to her like she's a normal person, you'll find out how she feels about you.
  22. Thanks for the replies. I'll test a few different setups and see which one works best.
  23. It's three, so I considered using a regular old switch, but I'm a network N00b and don't quite see how communication between the three devices would work without some device in between assigning addresses.
  24. It's three, so I considered using a regular old switch, but I'm a network N00b and don't quite see how communication between the two devices would work without some device in between assigning addresses. well, odd double post glitch, before and after an edit. anyways, it should say three devices.
  25. I'm going on a road trip with my girlfriend and her family to Southern California on Friday the Third, which is pretty cool, except that my girlfriend's sister prefers to not go anywhere and instead play League of Legends on her laptop. As such, I thought I'd take it upon myself to set up some kind of LAN network within the car (thinking of calling it highwayLANder. . . huehuehuehue) in order for us to play P2P on minecraft and other games which allow LAN connection games, just so she doesn't get bored. My first instinct was to get a mobile hotspot, except that those cost a pretty penny, may not allow P2P communication (for security), and will be using data to connect to the internet, which is a feature that probably won't be used. Which brings me to my question all you computer wizards: How can I set up a functional local area network within a car for P2P gaming. If i have to, I'll get the hotspot and gift it to my own sister later, but I'd prefer not to. Thanks in advance for the help. Also, here are some things to consider when coming up with your own frankenstein creation: all laptops being used have both wireless and wired network capabilities I have a lot of spare network switches, a netgear wireless hotspot, and linksys wireless G router just lying around to use. it all has to fit under the seats of a toyota camry (the seats will be cramped as is) I'm not very experienced in Linux, but if necessary I can learn and I know a lot of computer programmers who can help. GO FORTH YOU MAD, NETWORKING GENIUSES!
