  1. Thanks for the fast reply. I tried removing the HDD and all RAM which results in the PC staying on but of course not posting. No combination of my two RAM sticks and the four slots make any difference. The HDD being connected or not doesn't either make a difference. I can't easily remove the GPU because of the water cooling but using the integrated graphics doesn't change anything. Could it really be a RAM issue or is it more probably a motherboard issue since two stick just dying seems a bit strange?
  2. Hi, I'm having an issue with my computer suddenly failing to even post while it worked perfectly fine two weeks ago. The computer (3570k, Asus P8Z77-v Pro,a titan GPU and custom WC) is mostly six years old with only minor changes to storage and cooling having been done, none of which recently. When trying to turn on the computer the fans power on for a second until the CPU led flashed red for a brief second and the PC tries to post again, this goes on indefinitely until you switch of the PSU. Only the power led is on otherwise and no video or any other signal goes through when turning on the PC. To fix the issue I've done the following: - Changed video output to the integrated to rule out the GPU. - Checked all connections and wires. - Changes RAM slots and RAM stick around - Cleared the CMOS - Attached a CPU fan to the MB's connector if the lack of fan would have been the issue. Has anyone had similar issues? I'm having difficulties locating the fault since the single red CPU led is so little to go by but the issue seems to be either CPU,MB or PSU related.
  3. I don't know how you found OptionHouse but it doesn't seem like the optimal broker to use if you just want to buy stock and not sell it for some time. Usually your bank can handle simple transactions like this, at least in the EU. I found this guide on OptionHouse's website if you want to stick with it: https://www.optionshouse.com/new-customers/trading-on-the-optionshouse-platform/how-to-place-an-order/ But this is still more complex with manually setting ask rates for an order in stead of just buying at the currently available traded price. Lastly options isn't something you should even look at unless you know what you're up to.
  4. I'm not familiar with OptionsHouse but what you're looking at in the picture is options on AMD stock and not buying the underlying stock itself.
  5. While chilling out is good advice I find it hard in multiplayer games where winning is pretty much the single major objective in the game. E.g. I couldn't stand playing something like LoL, Dota 2, CS or any repetitive multiplayer game without some degree of competitiveness and seriousness, just sitting back and doing somewhat the same thing over and over again isn't rewarding nor the selling point of these games in my opinion unless it somewhat seriously. Whenever I lose in a game I try to take it as a chance to analyze my own failures and mistakes in the game e.g. during a respawn timer or after a match. This might be hard if you only play casually and don't have a plan or clear intentions of what you're doing in the game and you don't understand the mechanics, but this isn't apparently the case for you. Trying to remember what you were supposed to do or looking back on a replay can be really helpful to spot your own faults. The easy way out tends to be blaming bad luck, your team, or that you were and underdog against something OP or "unfair". I find that knowing some basic statistics can be very helpful to not fall for these fallacies. It's incredibly unlikely that you would have bad stats over a large amount of games because of actually having "bad luck" with teams. You have to remember that you're the only static factor over all of those games played compared to all those players and RNG based outcomes. I kind of have the same issue as you with Starcraft II when I try to get into a new competitive game. I think it's partly to do with the very steep learning curve in addition to taking things seriously. I hate the feeling of loosing without knowing why, which is often the case in new games. This is where it's easiest to fall back on blaming things to be op and blaming teams or RNG, when you're unable to analyze your own failures. I try to not take games as seriously in the beginning because it can't really be expected that anyone is competitive and takes losses constructively from the start. In games with some progression it's easiest to set yourself some target and just try to explore the game and it's mechanics, or perhaps play with like minded people in the same situation to help lift the mood. I hope my reply helped in some way even though this is a pretty hard subject to briefly comment on.
  6. I think the idea of selfishness should be seen as a broader concept than something as egoism or greed. It's a completely selfish act to donate money or save someone from a burning building if the one who receives the donation or is saved represents some value to you. A selfless act would be to donate to a cause you do not deem worthy of the money or save a person you rather wouldn't save, that is that the option of not donating and not saving the person would leave you better of. I don't really believe in the "we are meant to do it" idea, at least not if we have enough time to process the information. E.g. you probably brake if you see a pedestrian step out into the road without knowing who it is, but then again not saving someone often leads to a negative reaction from others around you.
  7. I've done this test a few times over the years and I usually end up at roughly the same spot. But some of the questions are pretty vague and I don't feel like any of the options really reflect my opinion. Surprised by the amount of left-leaning people, especially since most are american and here I end up pretty far right and I'm from the socialist utopia of Norther Europe.
  8. Seems like the best option. I haven't ran any overclocks so that shouldn't be a problem either. I think I'll run the 500gb hard drive over the Easter and if everything still works upgrade to a new SSD and probably change most things anyway. But it still leaves the question of what happened to my old 1TB hard drive.
  9. Thanks for still helping out. I hadn't noticed the unexpected losses of power but perhaps it could explain why I had issues with both the SSD and the hard drive. I installed a completely new 500gb hard drive I bought last year but haven't used before and everything works so far. I also changed from SATA 3 to SATA 2 just to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with the controller. I ran crystaldiskinfo on the new drive but apparently there isn't the "unexpected loss of power" statistic for hard drives. But what could cause this? Should I keep using the new hard drive or am I just slowly going to kill it too and be back tearing my hair out here when my summer vacation comes around? Thanks for replying. It does seem strange that both my SSD and hard drive would fail out of degradation since my use is pretty light even compared to the laptop I'm writing this on that's much older and has been used under more load.Malware or viruses shouldn't be a problem since I've reinstalled windows a dozen times the past few days. This is really turning out to be quite the riddle, perfect for my couple of days of around Easter for which I had work all planned out. If I can't find a solution any time soon selling the damn parts that work is starting to sound a lot more attractive and getting something low maintenance that just works. This water cooled rig is amazing when it works but holy shit is it a nightmare when anything goes wrong.
  10. According to most things I've read the black screen with cursor is a GPU driver issue. Might have to try using the on board graphics. I installed windows on my slightly newer hard drive that's been barely used so it shouldn't be the problem. I really need the Dr. House of PC troubleshooting.
  11. And the thing is stone dead again. The PC went into sleep mode and when I woke it up there was again the unresponsive desktop with missing icons. After trying to reboot we're back at the black screen with cursor before login.
  12. Here's a picture I just took. The read error rates do seem high even though the SSD hasn't been under heavy use, but then again the earlier OCZ driver aren't famous for their reliability. But I'd be happy if it would scrape by another months or so since I'm planning to do an upgrade.
  13. Thanks again, I tried making a new page file of the size (1912mb) recommended by windows instead of the 1920mb which was there before. I also tried some time ago what someone recommended in an earlier thread which was moving the page file to another drive. This didn't seem to solve the issue at the time. But now everything seems to be working fine while only using the SSD which is pretty strange. Do you think it could still be the SSD causing everything even though the SMART info looks pretty fine?
  14. Things go from bad to magically better. After the issued with my hard drive I chose to try to install on the apparently faulty SSD, and everything works perfectly. But on another Swedish forum where I posted the same question everyone seemed set on that the SSD was the issue and saying that the raw read error rate from the crystalmark above was horrible. I hope that the hard drive somehow caused this even though I can't understand how it could cause constant 100% usage of the SSD. And for some reason windows now insists that it should be installed in Finnish.
  15. Thanks for the reply. I believe I tried this some time ago to no avail. I tried to do it now but the computer was completely unresponsive at the desktop. But i finally tried to do a completely clean install of W10 and format all my drives and remove the SSD. After installing W10 on my hard drive I now have the issue of booting into a black screen with the cursor before login. I'm really loosing my patience with this heap of shit.
  16. The monologue continues. I'm going to try installing Windows on my hard drive to see if I can get the heap of crap to function. The joy of downloading at least some things and hoping for windows and word activations to carry over. But then again I've been looking at selling this whole water cooled high maintenance thing for some mini-ITX thing that just works.
  17. So now it's getting even worse and I haven't managed to boot and get into Chrome at all today. The system freezes during booting after login, at the desktop or once I open Chrome. Anyone think it can be anything but the SSD? It seems like the obvious problem but then again it's strange how it works perfectly in some situations, One would think a failing disk would show the issues all the time.
  18. Thanks for the fast reply. The issue is that the disk doesn't actually do anything, read and write speeds won't go above 1mb/s. So there is no way to see what causes the 100% disk usage. But the only time when this happens is when I open Chrome or while Chrome is open, except for when booting. As seen in my earlier post from last year I had the same issue with Word and Steam instead of Chrome. Here's a picture of the SSD's crystaldisk info:
  19. Hi, It's a couple months since my thread with the same problem (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/473524-100-disk-usage-when-starting-steam-and-word/#comment-6417089) and I'm still seeing the problem but with different programs. So the main issue is still the slow boot times of around 3-5 minutes but now Chrome has also been suffering with the same issue of 100% disk usage which makes the computer completely unresponsive. The 100% disk usage goes on for about 5 minutes in Chrome until the disk usage drops to 1-5% but there has been cases where I've had to reboot the whole heap of junk. While at 100% disk usage the answer time usually goes to thousands of ms but the disk doesn't actually do anything since the read and writes speed stay at under 1mb/s. It's quite frustrating how my fairly high end machine has had so many issues compared to my old Acer laptop. I've tried looking for a fix but nothing has worked so far so I'd be very happy if anyone could shed some light on this issue from own experiences or if you would have happened to hear about someone else with similar problems.
  20. Hi, I'm looking into buying CK2 since I really like the single player experience in slow paced strategy games like the CIV series or EU4 but I'm getting bored of CIV 5 and I really don't have time to actively play multiplayer because of the extremely long game times. But I have no idea what DLC:s you should get as a new player. Most of the DLC:s seem to add content like new areas but don't affect the gameplay that much. So I would really like if a CK2 player could bring some light on which DLC:s are worth getting. There's currently a deal on GMG for a "collection" edition for 29€ but that doesn't include the newest DLC:s. It looks like having a million DLC:s that are either completely necessary or completely useless tends to be the norm with this type of games.
  21. There's several good brands like Crockett & Jones, Allen Edmonds, Church's, Alfred Sargent or Loake that might be in your price range given that they are available in Australia with roughly the same pricing as here in the EU but you might have to look for a sale at least for some brands. Depending on what you wear with the shoe I'd go for a classic oxford in black (e.g. http://www.crockettandjones.com/product/audley-black) or something a bit less formal in brown or tan. If you really hate laces then go for something like a loafer even though laces are pretty much the norm. Anything in this price range should come with a goodyear welted leather sole. I would also recommend to stay away from typical fashion brands since the quality usually doesn't match that of those brands listed above.
  22. So I just reinstalled Steam but the problem still persist. I have no idea what could be causing all this. The SSD would be the obvious culprit but the problem is so situational which isn't very common for disk issues.
  23. I could try reinstalling Word but that doesn't really explain the slow start up and windows trying to repair the disk. And when it comes to steam it crashes once I try to do something and doesn't download anything without my permission. I don't see how it could be anything other than the disk, getting software issues over and over again just doesn't sound very plausible but then again I can't see anything wrong with the disk in any diagnostic tool. I might just go out and get a new 500gb SSD to replace both of my drives but I would like the single out the SSD as the culprit before throwing more money at this never-ending crusade.
  24. Thanks for the answer. I tried the defragmentation tool but there was no change, according to the SMART data and OCZ's own diagnostic tool everything is fine with the drive, Crystaldisk also says it's fine.
  25. Update I've changed SATA port for both the SSD and the HDD from avermedias to intels 6GB/s to rule out buggy drivers but there isn't really any improvement. The computer is also quite slow to start up after the login screen and is unresponsive for a short time ~10s while on the desktop.Windows has also done a disk repair and scan the last two startups without any sign of improvement. I don't know what else than the SSD could be the culprit but then again it's completely fine while doing other more demanding stuff like playing games. It could also be a software issue but I can't see how a completely fresh install of Windows 10 could go sour so quickly (about 1 month old). The last time I had troubles getting into windows my install was only a couple moths old. It doesn't seem like anyone has come across anything like this judging by the posts but any ideas or theories would be helpful.
