  1. Thanks for confirming what I thought about the USB interface being the limiting factor. I checked my computers and the fastest I have are USB 3.1 ports. I hardly think the Nvme drives would be faster in these conditions.
  2. Hi, So, I really, really need to get more storage (no choice, my drives are full) and after thinking again and again I'm going to go for SSD's and external USB enclosures. The cost of purchasing, say, a 2TB 2.5inch SATA SSD + enclosure or a M.2 NVME SSD + enclosure being rather similar around my area, could anyone tip me about the pros and cons of both solutions? I mean, apart from the size factor, is there any real upside or downside going one way or another? Thanks!
  3. Hi! So, my Android tablet is dying and I'm not really interested in replacing it. Still, there are 3~4 games I'd like to keep on playing, and was wondering if I could manage to run these games on Windows? What is your best/favorite way to use Android apps on Windows 11? So far, I thought about the following possibilities : either use some Android emulator (such as Bluestacks), or try to install ChromeOS in VirtualBox. Or should I rather try my luck with Linux and use some FOSS Android emulator? Every solution seems to have pros and cons and I don't know what to do. One last but very important detail : I DO need the Google Play Store, as some games require it. Thanks for the help and advice!
  4. Hi, could anyone recommend me a compact case that would be : small and light enough to be easily carried from one room (my office, upstairs) to another room (living room, downstairs) able to fit a 8C/16T CPU and 1 or 2 SSDs have room for a small/low profile GPU to add some oomph if/when needed I can easily find cases that can be carried (such as the ASROCK X300 or INWIN Chopin) but can't fit a GPU, or cases that can fit a GPU but would be too difficult to carry. Am I chasing windmills? Thanks
  5. 1. Shooting in 4K/6K/8K/12K and 12-bit~16-bit RAW won't magically make your videos more interesting. 2. Shooting people walking in slo-mo over a (stolen) sad music doesn't make a video "Cinematic". 3. Despite all their clever marketing and "we're so cool and holier-than-thou attitude", you shouldn't trust Apple any more than you trust other tech giants.
  6. AMD still doesn't care about you, and we're almost 2 years after that message was written
  7. Hi, could anyone recommend me the best CPU coolers for a Ryzen 4750g in a Asrock DeskMini X300? Asrock website states about 46mm max. What are the best options available if running at base clock (no overclocking planned)? Thanks
  8. Dell Japan just started selling 5700U laptops. Hopefully someone is going to release some small desktop based on the same CPU.
  9. That's quite long to wait if it comes at all. The 4800U version isn't even available here in Japan
  10. Hi, does anyone know of any forthcoming Nuc-sized PC with Ryzen 5000U series? (preferably 5700U or 5800U) I think Asus may release something sooner or later but I don't recall hearing much about anything else. Thanks!
  11. Thanks. That's what I feared It seems the Omen 25L and 30L desktops are among the only HP computers that use standard components. Would you happen to know if the situation is similar with Lenovo and Dell?
  12. Hi, I'm curious about the HP Z1 Entry Tower G6 entry-level workstation ( https://support.hp.com/th-en/document/c06902388 ) Does anyone own the i7-10700 or i9-10900 version and, if so, could you tell me if it's possible to replace the motherboard? After digging in HP docs on line, it seems that the motherboard is custom-made / custom-shaped, which doesn't sound very future-proof in case of motherboard failure. Could a standard motherboard fit in that chassis or is it hopeless? What about other HP professional pre-built systems, such as the entry-level ProDesk 405 G6 SFF? Thanks
  13. Just one model (out for the many, many models) they sell has RAID. Can't remember which one. I think it was HP workstation. It's (or was, if it's been sold) 2TB (4x 500GB) configured in RAID 0. Anyway, the one I'm eyeing is this one https://www.pcwrap.com/item/detail/1222899 I'm curious what they used it for, as it comes with DOS/V. No big deal as I'd put Linux on it. I'm simply wondering what one can do with DOS in 2014...
  14. Indeed! Though, I think they wiped the drives already anyway.
  15. It's still quite annoying when the computer is on the second floor, and you have to carry it downstairs, then to the car etc. These workstations are heavy beasts.
  16. Thanks! I noticed that some of these PCs come with a RAID configuration, which is something I neither want nor need. Is it difficult to reconfigure a workstation to get rid of RAID?
  17. Hi, I was wondering, do you guys think it's a good idea to buy a used workstation? I know a company here in Japan, with a shop in Osaka, that sells tons of used computers. Among them, quite a few Dell or HP workstations. Deals are often interesting, start rather low for 4C/4T or 4C/8T Xeon + 16GB Ram a Quadro and new SSD (about ¥40,000~¥50,000), up to quite a lot more for a Dual 10C/20T Xeon + 128GB Ram a Quadro and new SSD. They also offer a 3 years warranty, which is totally unheard of around here for second-hand computers. My worry is, well, for what I know all these computers might have been ON 24/7 for years and could just stop working anytime. Can't make up my mind. It's tempting, but is it really such a good idea to go the second-hand path...?
  18. Hi, I'm going to build a PC for mostly audio/video/photo work, and a little bit of retro gaming. At first, the computer will be fitted with a I7-10700 (I already own one) and 2 M.2 SSDs. I plan on adding a RTX 3700 or a Quadro later on, when I can find one. There will be no additional SSD/HDD inside the case, and probably no additional PCI card unless I end up needing a video/audio capture card (but it's unlikely). I want a rather SFF PC and chose the Cooler Master NR200 for that purpose (the white version without the glass panel). I don't wish to use liquid cooling The case can house up to 7 fans. How many would you recommend me to use and where should I put them? What about positive/negative air pressure? Furthermore, could anyone recommend me a good CPU cooler for the I7-10700 that would fit the case (up to 155mm in height according to the case manual). Thanks!
  19. Isn't TB support quite wonky with AMD processors? when the first Asrock with TB was released, I think I recall discussions on Egpu.io stating that eGPU didn't work at all. Granted, that was quite a while ago and things may have changed. Anyway, thanks for your answer!
  20. Hi, so... I know the desktop + eGPU solution has a fair share of critics and quite a few downsides but : - I already own an eGPU TB3 enclosure - I already own a good graphic card - I quite like having the ability to share my equipment between computers I currently share this set-up between 2 laptops, but I'd like to also build a small footprint desktop with a beefier CPU. This computer will be used for work and leisure and I want it small and light in order to move it between a work room upstairs and the living room downstairs. Besides, I still want to be able to use the cards with the above-mentioned laptops. So, knowing that I'm totally OK with the eGPU downsides and the small performance hit, back to the main question : is there any LGA 1200 motherboard with thunderbolt 3 (or 4) that I could use with my eGPU enclosure under Windows 10 Pro? Thanks
  21. Thanks. The point is, I will edit videos I shot with my Fuji X-T4. It's 4K 10 bits 4:2:0 and, while I'm definitely not a pro (I would buy a much more expensive monitor if I were), I'd much prefer staying in the camera's native resolution while editing.
  22. Hi, I hope so of you guys can help me choose a monitor. First important thing : apart from a little bit of retro gaming here or there, I am not a gamer. Therefore, all the bells and whistles specifically aimed at gamers are not something I'm overly concerned with. What my monitor will be used for : - video and photo editing - video viewing (web, YouTube, Amazon Prime and Netflix) - TV viewing (coming from the HDMI output of a TV hard-drive/BD-R recorder that would double as a TV tuner) Features the monitor should have : - 4K HDR - 24 inches minimum, and 32 inches maximum -- though I would really prefer 24 inches if possible - Real 10 bits (no 8 bits + FRC) - A good video color gamut (such as DCI-P3... let's not dream about REC 2020) and, if possible, a high sRGB or Adobe RGB percentage - HDMI port must support HDCP - If possible, a USB-C input that supports both video and audio in - And, before I forget, at least one Display Port So far, the BEN-Q EW3280U seems to be almost perfect, but it's a tad too expensive -- and I would really prefer a slightly smaller screen. Hope all the details can help. Thanks in advance!
  23. Hi, I got a question for Mame experts. I noticed that roms for some Sega boards (Model 2, Model 3, Naomi etc.) don't seem to work under Mame, even the latest version. Quite surprising to say the least, as - these systems work with other dedicated emulators (Model 2 Emulator, Supermodel...) - Naomi and Dreamcast are very similar, and Dreamcast emulation is quite good nowadays - same generation systems by Capcom, Namco... seem fairly well supported under Mame Mame developers are very good and do a fantastic job so I was wondering, on a purely technical level, what makes some Sega boards so difficult to emulate? Any idea? Thanks
  24. How much worse? I have quite a lot of footage shot with a Black Magic camera (quite high quality, with high bit-rate) that I know I won't use in any project, but want to keep for personal memory / archive. I can trade off some quality for a significant gain of space on my hard drives. I'll probably choose h265, maybe the quality loss is less than with h264? Or should I just postpone my new computer purchase and wait to see if the next generation GPUs will include the forthcoming h266 encoder/decoder ?
  25. Hi, If anyone tried h264/h265 compression with their GPU (using Handbrake), could you please tell me : does it decrease CPU usage? Thanks
