  1. Hi, So for a university project I am configuring a kernel and updating the current one on a slackware distro. I was wondering if anyone knows of which modules are safe to leave out and any performance tweaks which may help? I have been playing for a while and changed the CPU to the one installed and enabled high capacity ram support. Cheers for any info
  2. Today there was a live stream from the Auckland town hall, I only caught the ending to it, but it was very interesting to hear what Glenn Greenwald, Snowden, Assange, Kim Dotcom and others had to say. It was chilling in parts to see the levels that the New Zealand government were involved with the NSA spying and the 5 eye's program. I don't have time at the moment to give my full thoughts on it. But if you are interested here is the archive up on youtube. Coverage starts around 21 mins which I think I queued it up for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pbps1EwAW-0#t=1313
  3. This is exactly the same as me asking you to give me all of your e-mail passwords, online banking details, access to your facebook, twitter etc.. There has to be a level of privacy for everyone I think, just because I have nothing to hide does not mean I want someone looking into my personal items, going through my photo albums and inspecting every aspect of my life. As the people looking into your PC are just like you and me, there is no accountability for what they do and who they do it to. There has to be suspicion that I/you have done something wrong for this to happen.
  4. Have you made sure that everything that needs to be plugged in is plugged in? For example the 4 pin for cpu?
  5. No worries at all, it happens to the best of us! Glad it's sorted.
  6. Hi, To start I would re-seat the GPU and make sure that any power cables that need to be connected to it are in fact connected, and I would also re-seat the RAM and make sure it is in securely. Also make sure that all of the PSU cables needed to power the computer are in place 4-pin for CPU etc.. Hope this helps as a starting point..
  7. Exactly, there will be a screen which will display all of the drives in the machine, You may have to go to advanced installation options on windows 8.1, I can't quite remember (only installed it once). From there you will be able to install it on the drive of your choice. I would recommend formatting the drive first to remove the old operating system. I'd also recommend downloading the drivers for your system beforehand and storing them on a separate USB drive, many times I have re-formatted and re-installed only to find out that I didn't have any network drivers.. which is a pain in the a** I didn't even know that existed! I suppose MS had to do something when they stopped giving out optical media...
  8. Yeah that's what I do 100% of the time to install a new OS, there is a handy program called rufus which enables you to create a USB boot drive from the ISO image. http://rufus.akeo.ie/ Let me know if you get stuck.
  9. Not understanding what the voltage selector on my PSU did many years ago and changing from 230 > 115 BAM! Couldn't hear out of my left ear for a week.
  10. I was having the same problem yesterday.. seems like a server thing... bloody origin!
  11. ah my bad I did check.. i guess not well enough.
  12. LOL Cool idea, maybe should have let someone know though.. "Watch Dogs' publisher has apologised after a publicity stunt for the video game backfired, causing an office evacuation and the deployment of an Australian bomb squad." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27607826
  13. In that case I'd probably just wipe the laptop, easy fix Unless there is anything on the laptop you really need you could try this.. not sure that would even work though, installing linux may have completely killed windows. http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/how-to-create-a-windows-rescue-usb-stick-984726
  14. That sounds like linux had installed over the top of your windows partition. I think it probably would have been best to create the partition through windows therefore it would not go over any of the files that windows needs. I'm not sure if it can be fixed without formatting the drive and re-installing both? Don't take my word for that though, someone else may have some more experience with this. Do you have a windows disk to see if you can do a system restore?
  15. Micro USB connectors Laptop keyboards, just what's the point! The one on my gaming notebook is terrible..
