  1. Everyone who's saying he did the right thing, consider this: UPS and FedEx both make screw ups all the time. They are constantly turning in to worse companies because they cut corners and can do so because they have an effective monopoly (yes, I know it's not actually a monopoly). In this instance they have no financial incentive to learn from their mistake. If the situation was reveresed, they sure as hell wouldn't help you out. They barely deliver their packages correctly. Donating some of them, keeping a couple, and doing a giveaway would have been a better idea. Both UPS and Apple pay for insurance for instances like this, and I wouldn't be suprised if they hadn't just collected on it before hearing from you.
  2. These videos had extremely good production value, but I don't understand why they took 4 months to be released... The build was done by August, and we get videos by December.
  3. Hey, science! Just wanted to give a little feedback and respond to some utterly glaring scientifically wrong responses. You do not need a sterile lab or a biosafety cabinet to work with agar plates. Repeating it 3 times would have been helpful- but see below for my recommendation on a 3rd control - I think that also addresses your concern about the sterility.. This is just plain wrong. Agar plates are not dangerous unless you put something dangerous on them. It's a considerably different circumstance with plates in a medical setting due to the origin of the bacteria, but just growing cultures of a swab of his phone is NOT dangerous. You need not burn them, or be worried about opening them. Try not to lick them. Obviously, ideally you'd want to autoclave them after use before putting them in the garbage. You probably don't have one. You can put them in boiling water if you're really paranoid, but honestly, there's little difference between an agar plate with this kind of swab and rotten food. Not trying to call you out, but spreading incorrect "let's freak out when there's no reason to freak out" information like the above is actually considerably harmful. I can understand if you worked in a medical lab and you simply misunderstood why that applied to you then, but does not apply in general. Isopropyl alcohol IS rubbing alcohol. But he used a higher concentration than is actually useful. Higher is not better! Using 70% Ethanol (not more, as the bacteria are able to survive) or 70-75% Isopropyl alcohol would have been ideal. Using the higher concentration prevents the alcohol from actually penetrating a lot of the cells, and allows them to live. ----------------- I wanted to give some serious feedback regarding the experiment, so here goes: 1. The 99% isopropanol shown in the video probably did not clean as well as you think it did, use industry standard 70-75%. 2. i would have liked to have seen a negative control used. Basically, clean with ~70% isopropanol, let dry, and immediately swab and do a plate of that. 3. The plates shouldnt grow for more than 24 hours. After that point you have a serious risk of get outside bacteria to get in and grow. You only want to see colonies of the bacteria that were present in "large" numbers on the phone, not tiny colonies that just happened to get in other ways and had time to grow like crazy. I think the reason they used the "spray culture" was because it was a antibiotic resistant vector, so they could grow it up in plates with antibiotic, so *only* that bacteria would grow. That allowed them to actually determine whether the phone soak works or not, because random outside bacteria wouldn't be able to grow (for example, if they had just been on the plate already). I love that you guys branched out to do some science!
  4. You said you upgraded. Did you do an upgrade install, or a fresh install? If you did an upgrade, perhaps try a fresh install. Running in an admin cmd prompt "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" MAY fix some issues, but it really depends.
  5. It's not a bad thing. RAM not being used isn't doing anything. Windows 8 has Superfetch, which fills your RAM with potentially useful applications so that its faster. You can disable it, see here. http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/disable-superfetch-windows-8/ Try it and see if it makes a difference. But remember, RAM sitting empty literally is doing you no good. It can clear nearly instantly if you need it, and it's setup so that if you need that RAM, it clears and you can use it.
  6. You might be able to use Stereo Mix, if you can't capture directly through that, you can set it up so that your other sound card "listens to this device" in the stereo mix settings, and then capture from the output of your sound card. How does the card capture the audio? Are there cables coming out of your PC into it, or is it connected to your pc via USB or whatever?
  7. Codeacademy.com for coding. Hands down. Just to set expectations, you have to know that at 15, nobody will hire you to do tech work. At 16, you might get a job selling computers, but most chain stores and even more likely small stores will require you to be 18 to do the actual work. This is industry standard as far as geek squad, staples, office Depot, etc. A+, unfortunately, is generally useless on its own. I definitely recommend learning to program. It's difficult at first but it completely changes the way you think, and if you get good at it, you can build programs for people. Now, Web design, isn't coding, but it's a good way to make money as a younger teen. Also fixing computers for relatives or friends.
  8. I was in your shoes 3 years ago. If there's a Staples in your area, try applying there. They pay less (afaik) than best buy, but they also tend to be willing to hire newbies to train. You probably won't be able to do tech work until you're 18, depending on if the store follows the rules or not, but selling tech products and occasionally getting a little tech action is always good. Make sure you call after a few days to "follow up on your application status". Good rule for anywhere: if you don't call, they'll assume you don't care that much. Some places are very anti-call, but they'll tell you so. Don't expect much though. Settle for McDonald's or a grocery store for a few (6ish) months if you have to. It's hard as hell to get a job with no experience, so take what you can get and go from there. Good luck!
  9. 1. Did you apply thermal paste? If so, try to reapply it. You need to clean both the CPU and the heatsink of the old paste. If you didn't, that's your problem. 2. Try a BIOS update if there's one available? It's also possible that your APU doesn't "like" the memory, or the voltages don't work. If you can, try another brand of memory or just deal with it at 1333, because it doesn't make much difference at all. 3. Yep. 6-8fps is about what you should expect. Keep in mind that the 6870 is the same as about 20 or so of those lower end cards, if not more. 4. Your TV most likely simply does not support 1080p. VGA doesn't support 1080p AFAIK. Its most likely that you're setting it to 1080p, and its just like "okay, I'll just do my max resolution instead", which is probably more along the likes of 1600x900. Just use the HDMI, and set it at whatever looks good. My dad runs his desktop on a 32 inch 720p TV, and had a similar issue to this. Just set it to whatever the native resolution of the TV is or whatever looks best. Try toying with it for a bit.
  10. Try another browser, I know chrome is awesome but try firefox or IE just for the sake of testing. Has this always been the case? When did it start? Are you using anything like adblock that might be trying to block those items on the page? Other things I would suggest trying: Scan for viruses with SuperAntiSpyware. Run SFC /scannow from an admin level cmd prompt. If you need help with that let me know. This will check to see if windows is corrupt in any way. Reset your browser settings. More info would be nice. What is your setup (hardware specs, what version Windows are you running, etc) How long has the problem been going on? When did it start?
  11. The easiest way I've found is to just install Windows 8 onto the SSD, then just move the default folder/program files locations to the HDD if you're keeping the HDD. If its a laptop, you're kinda stuck just using the SSD. Cloning works alright but I recommend a clean install.
  12. I don't mean to be negative, but computer science(programming, coding) is MATH. If you aren't good at math, or don't like doing math... I hate to say it but either look for another career or learn to love math. With cs you need to use math a lot because it IS math. You also need to be able to think logically. That said, if it's something you really want to do, take an intro to cs course your freshman year of college (before declaring your major and getting in too deep), and if you don't think it's hard after that go for it. Personally, I hate math, but I'm good at it, and i plan on dual majoring in CS and biology, and I'm a premed student. It's not impossible but just realize that there's going to be a ton of math and you'll end up learning it.
  13. Unless you can setup NIC Teaming on your desktop, there is not a way to do this. Simply plugging in 2 Gigabit Cat6 cables from PC to switch will not work without NIC teaming.
  14. Not all tablets can output 1080p video either. Tell us your current specs. If its a really old pc with a really crappy video card, then there's the problem. If its at least an A4.i3 or better, then it could be your software or something to do with your storage. I've also seen certain media players not work well with certain video formats.
  15. What OS are you using for your home server?
