Anyone have a timestamped link to the WAN show where he talked about his sibling destroying the finish on his CRT? Or wherever it might be, in case he misspoke. I'm really curious what he was talking about.

I'm trying to remember how the speed negotiation works for PCIe. My motherboard has 3 PCIe 4.0 x1 slots. If I adapted a PCIe 3.0 x4 NVME drive to one of these (say, if I replaced my second NVME drive, and wanted to reuse my old drive somehow), would it simply have the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 x1, or would it negotiate it down to PCIe 3.0 x1?

Ah, the two video cards issue is something I didn't think about. They're dual six pin cards, so I'll have to keep that in mind. My question was more just to make sure if he had a 850W PSU back then, it'd be a safe bet he'd need one today. I would imagine so, but since hardware has changed in various ways the past 10 years, I just wanted to double check.

I'm diagnosing my friend's 10 yo PC at the moment, and I've gotten to a point where I'm thinking the PSU might be the culprit, but I'm still testing. My main question is, currently a Coolermaster 850W Silent Pro 80Plus Bronze is installed running a then contemporary i5 or i7 CPU and dual SLi 560 Tis, so should I realistically order him a new 850W PSU, or would something more conservative be fine? I remember needing like a 800W+ PSU back when I had my Q6600 build, but given that PSU recommendations have gone down in wattage, I wanted to make sure that this is solely because of CPUs and GPUs have become more efficient with less power draw overall (well, Intel and nVidia lately are kind of making me feel silly suggesting this lol), and not that it has anything to do with better PSUs being available. I've been under the presumption that the main thing with modern PSUs is that you're much more likely, on a quality unit, to actually get the Wattage on the tin under a real load, along with new technology, cooling, efficiency, etc. Looking at some at possible CPUs (I'm guessing it's a Sandy Bridge i5 or i7), it's possible it might draw up to around 300W, and the 560 Tis could hit about 260W each, which leads me to believe he may very well need a 850W PSU. This feels like an obvious question, but since I want to make sure this thing works reliably into the future, and he seems to want to run it alongside whatever his new desktop build will be, I want to make sure I get the right wattage. I'm really only familiar with figuring out replacements for much more modern PCs, as well as looking up the quality of the brand and model. Thanks in advance

GOG is CD Projekt's storefront, so if you buy Cyberpunk there, not only is it DRM free, none of the money is going to Epic. They launched GOG in 2008, iirc.

Could be crap, but man, getting to that sweet, sweet 2k milestone in terms of steam games is helped a ton by FREE

It's showing as available for me, but I already spent my coupon. I'm also in the US region, if that helps. If it's any consolation, the price on Epic (sans coupon) is the one on GOG, so if the coupon isn't working on epic, might as well get the game at the source.

Epic is giving away a $10 coupon again, but sadly, this coupon doesn't regenerate like the previous coupons have...(cue a crying @Paul Rudd) That being said, it's still nice. I just used it to get a discount grabbing Crysis 2 and 3 remastered, since I already bought Crysis remastered and kind of want to run through them again.

Other than the lithographical differences and age, an older server processor (E5-2660) and a newer 4400 shouldn't really be using all that much power just doing NAS duty, as far as I understand it, but I could be wrong. I would say most likely my HDDs are drawing more amps than my CPU is at idle. But as to why? ECC memory, server board features (IPMI, auto-startup from power loss, etc.), loads of cores for virtualization and running jails (think Plex, Syncthing, Minecraft, Deluge, Pihole, docker containers, etc.), higher memory amounts, more PCIe lanes for additional storage, better virtualization support; if you plan to use your NAS for anything more than, well, a NAS, they're pretty useful. I plan on dumping in my 2060 when I upgrade for 4k transcoding, and once I run out of HDD slots, adding a separate SAS box (basically an empty case filled with a PSU and HDDs) to expand storage further. I'm currently running a mirrored setup with 2x10Tb and 4x4Tb and plan to chuck in some more 10Tb drives before the end of the year.

As mentioned, this version has cheevos, which I'm a gremlin for even though I really don't worry about them these days, and unmentioned, there are both QOL improvements, as well as some things people don't like. Either way, I own it, so I'd like to play it. Technically the whole purpose of backing it up is so I never play it from the DVD, I'd run the image using Daemon Tools. Afaik, there is no compatibility modes for Windows store apps, nor is the option of running as an admin.

I recently reinstalled windows because of some issues and, for whatever reason, I'm having issues with DOOM 3, specifically the Microsoft store version (it's the one you'd find with Gamepass, though I own it since it's a Play Anywhere title (support them, they're the future of gaming!)). I've played a number of titles without any issues; in fact, this new build of Windows 11 is running better than all the previous builds I've had. But DOOM 3 isn't happy, and I'm trying to figure out why. Past a DDU, anyone have any clue what's going on? I'm on Windows 11 Pro Insider Preview Build 22471. Attached is what I'm seeing. I've reinstalled the game, changed monitors, edited config files, etc. I'll try DDU right now, and I'm open to it just being an issue with drivers or Windows 11 that will be fixed, so ohps, oh well. Funny enough DOOM 3 is a game I still have on DVD, and backed up recently, but I don't get those cheevos in that version, now do I?

I built a Xeon based FreeNAS build, upgraded to TrueNAS Core 12, and I love it too. It's been a fantastic and pain-free solution to get a ZFS NAS up and running.

If FH3 is anything to go on, FH4 will get pulled next September or so. Usually the Horizon games overlap a little. Funny enough, I was remembering how long the original Horizon game was still available, since I think it got delisted last year along with FH3. Yeah, I've been trying to back up "preserved copies" of FM7, FH3, and FH4 just in case. Funny enough, I never knew about FM6 Apex until after it delisted, so I've been on a mad search to find a way to run it. I found a beta somewhere online that got to run, and I'm pretty close to running the actual game files again. UWP is weird, especially with the un-encrypted APPX packages. You just have to install them using powershell, copy the files to a new directory, enable a developer mode, and re-install using those loose files. Yeah, it's a sim more or less. It's more arcadey than other sims, but it's still a sim by nature. There's definitely some nice tracks in the past few FMs, with tunnels, nice cliff-side vistas, etc. The rain and night effects are fun too, changing up the play mechanics.

Presumably the Xbox store and Microsoft store. For whatever reason, Microsoft continually delists all main Forza titles and their DLC, with Forza Horizon titles and their DLC generally staying up (I think only the Fast and the Furious titles got delisted?). The general understanding I have gleaned is that it is a rights issue, either for music and or for cars. However, it does seem odd that Forza Horizon seems to be unaffected by these decisions. It's incredibly painful whenever one of the titles gets delisted, because they truly are great racing titles. Edit: Seems like only Horizon 4 is available

You could technically use privacy to create a free anonymous credit card and limit it to like a dollar or something. I used it once when ordered some ear tips over the phone from etymotics and it was a pretty nice service.

I have no idea how reputable this channel is, and they're testing using a 2080 ti (and 1080 ti for some reason?), not a 1080, but there's some definite gains in fps in some of these games. They also have a video of the 5800x fighting back a bevy of i7 processors. Take it with a grain of salt, but it sounds like they're in line with your results! Thanks for posting. I've been wondering about this stuff myself lately (though I'm on a 3600 and a 2060, so I'm more GPU limited for the most part...), especially since my friend upgraded his board to a 10th gen i7 and got some decent gains in games, despite keeping his GTX 970.

Worked for me. Maybe it's a region issue? Check your guys's DLC for the game. It should add it automatically the two additional chapters. It's free for the month because they wanted to celebrate pride month.

Probably the wrong subforum for this, but frankly, unless you need 2TB+, most gamers would be fine with a 1TB SN550 (thanks to the WD secret sauce), let alone something fancier. Now, if you have a specific workload, these fancy nvmes are awesome, and what not. Hell, the 1TB SN550 beat the, presumably 1TB, SN750 in certain benchmarks and has higher TBW iirc. So it's not even an issue of name brand, but also people assuming they need as much SSD as they can afford. Hell, do we even know the difference for gaming with a low end nvme SSD and a higher end one for titles that support resizable bar?

No steam links, no reviews, just all the extras that come with The Witcher games, helpful if you only own them on Steam or console! (the games are on sale on GOG as well...again, lol)
