Few things that may work: - Create the zone work.local on your DNS server and set up the zone to forward to your work DNS. Example under forward zone: http://docstore.mik.ua/orelly/networking_2ndEd/dns/ch10_05.htm - If you're on Linux or OSX you could try configuring your resolver to something like this: search <home_domain> <work_domain>nameserver <home_dns>nameserver <work_dns>nameserver <other> VPN software often has a shell script that temporarily rewrites the resolver file so you could probably setup the script to do this automatically. It also may not hurt to just have it always configured this way. I'm sure Windows has something like this too but I don't know how it works.

All the time. I'm just recently getting back into some gaming after about a 6 month break.

E3 Xeons ending with a 5 have integrated graphics: http://ark.intel.com/products/75462/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1245-v3-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz You could also stick with the 1231 and go with one of these server boards: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon3000/#1150 They have a separate on board video chip. ECC RAM is required for most of these boards though.

I leave it on at all times. It is an all in one box that is also my home server so it is inconvenient to have go down. I haven't tried this but I think wake on mouse/keyboard/USB events would be the best for these kinds of boxes if you do want to power cycle frequently.

Yes you can do this on pfsense. Create the VPN client connection and once you have the new interface, you can select it as the outbound NAT interface.

Is running a RAID 5 array in my personal rig viable?
madcow replied to MooseCheese's topic in Storage Devices
I don't think modern CPUs will be affected much, especially with a typical home PC work load. On board is free to try. You could always add a raid card afterwards if you feel you need it. -
You won't be able to keep your data and move to motherboard raid (or any firmware/hardware raid). This goes for all raid levels including raid1 and even raid0 or JBOD of a single disk. Some software raid options may allow you to keep your data. Not sure. 4 disk raid10 sounds like a good option to me but you will need to back up your data elsewhere for migration.

Some processors got a huge boost going from v2 to v3 for not much more: E5-2630 v2, 6 core, 2.6 Ghz, 15MB cache ~$610 E5-2630 v3, 8 core, 2.4 Ghz, 20MB cache ~$690 I do agree that DD4 costs are still high and capacities are not impressive though.

Congratulations on your new build! Any reason you went E5 v2 over v3? Also I hope noise is not a concern for you.. I can't image what noise output that JBOD beast is capable of with seemingly no way to do PWM fan control.

Mine is actually in a bathroom. The power cord doesn't dangle over the toilet though. It routes behind it. I run about 20ft of display and USB cables to the room next door where I have my desk setup. I generally don't need to care about heat or noise of the box.

I've used and recommended rtorrent for many years but I tried transmission some time ago and instantly loved it. It is far easier to setup with very little configuration required. The web UI is included and pretty much works out of the box. No additional web servers/configurations needed. It works very well too staying snappy and responsive even with hundreds of items in the list. No problem adding about 100-200 torrents at a time to start simultaneously. No problem writing to a network share (some clients have issues). My one minor con with transmission is that I believe it doesn't support binding traffic to a particular interface. If you have a VPN connection that you want to restrict all of its traffic to, you would probably need to do that at the firewall.

How fast does your NAS transfer data?
madcow replied to officiallyasimulator's topic in Storage Devices
My understanding is that ZFS performance roughly scales with the number of vdevs so if you have 8 vdevs then I think the numbers make sense. I have a setup with 2 raidz2 vdevs and performance really is not great.. granted I run the slower 5900 RPM disks. I also have no dedicated cache disks for SLOG or L2ARC so I would be curious to know if they improve performance for you. -

Nice performance. How are you getting those speeds? If you don't mind, could you share your configs such as, raid level, vdev, compression, any cache disks you may be using, etc? Also what tests did you run to measure speed? -
Specs are perfect for a home pfsense box.

I hate Windows but don't necessarily hate MS (yet) because I can personally choose to not use their stuff. By choose in this sense, I mean realistically without compromises - I don't need or want applications for either work or personal life that requires Windows. There is gaming but I'm feeling more and more like gaming has died for me. I never have the initiative to actually play. Also if I feel like I need to game to justify the purchase of my graphics card I feel like I'm doing it wrong.

Didn't know the answer to that one. Google gave me some results though http://www.wincert.net/tips/microsoft-windows/windows-7/1830-how-to-change-default-installation-path-on-windows-7.html

You can put the 250GB and 500GB in raid if you want to. Raid0 will give you 500GB of usable space. Raid1 will give you 250GB. In either case you will still have 250GB of space left on the 500GB disk that you can use for something else. If you just want to add the capacities together you can put them in JBOD but you won't get any performance or redundancy benefits of raid. I'm pretty sure most software raid including the one built into Windows supports all of this. Not sure about motherboard raid.

What do you prefer? (build form factors)

I think C2Qs still have some use but spending $200 just to be able to OC a 6-7 year old system? Why not just put the spare graphics card into the free dell machine and call it good?

If you have never used Linux and are just expecting a drop in replacement for Windows then it will probably not work out for you. Why not grab the Windows 10 developer preview? It is free isn't it?

how much have you written to your SSD?
madcow replied to Peter Vaughan Truslow's topic in Storage Devices
I've been curious about this. I was thinking I was abusing mine pretty badly but it seems to not be the case. 4511 GB written 12860 power on hours Running a host OS + 4-6 VMs -
What, exactly, are you waiting for, for your next upgrade?
madcow replied to Jack.EXE's topic in General Discussion
CPU - released MB - released RAM - waiting for higher capacities Case - reuse Storage - reuse Initiative - still waiting for this Justification - still waiting for this -
Looks okay to me.. I wonder though how do your VMs perform off of the Synology? I would have gone with a local SSD or two for VM images.
