  1. If a computer is getting a public IP address. Protocol APIPA will be in effect and its a windows feature only. If he did get a public IP address it will be 169.254.x.x 255.255.0.0.
  2. Get a wireless switch. You may never know that you need wireless. Leave the router where it is currently. With the long ethernet cable connected to the router, plug the switch on the other end upstairs where your computers are. And from there you can expand how many computers are connected.
  3. Distance and the type of ethernet can affect the performance of transmission.
  4. The purpose of the OSI model is just that it's more finite with the way how computers communicate with each other on the network and to be used to troubleshoot the network. The internet is another place that is run by politics. Rules to live by to ensure the same level of communication between each devices. Protocols are all the same, is just that OSI model is just a reference to do troubleshooting. If you don't know how to troubleshoot network, you can't understand the OSI model.

    Slow internet

Make sure any ethernet cables doesn't have any sharp bend in the line. That can cause the signal to degrade during transmission.
  6. 25mb/s divide by 8 equal to 3.125 MB/s. You need to know the difference between bits and BYTES when if comes to transmitting data on a network.
  7. Awesome. I'm jealous that you're certified. I still need to complete three more courses so that I can do my CCNA cert exam.
  8. CCENT is an entry level course for an introduction to networking. So don't blame him for trying to ask for help. @JoeyDM yes you can. But completely irrelevant because if you're going to do your CCENT and move on to CCNA which I'm doing. You should learn how to subnet networks with another Cisco switch and see if you can connect two networks together and try and ping the two networks. Your lab network and home network. I'm doing the same thing as you are. Two networks, my home which is 192.168.0.x 255.255.255.0. My other one is 10.0.0.X 255.255.255.0 and that is for my two cisco routers and 2950 switch. And I wouldn't say that you're good at using iOS. You just know how to use it. There is a lot of features on iOS that you don't know about. Me I still have a lot to learn because CCENT is just a start. CCNA is more in depth with the iOS, CCNP is all about securities on iOS. etc etc.
  9. All you have to do is to disable wireless on your ISP gateway or modem/router to your definition so that the other router can broadcast a wireless signal. Another issue is that DHCP service should also be disable on the second router so that your ISP gateway will handle for sending out IP address to any device that will connect to the router that broadcast a signal. Keep firewall ON for the ISP modem and the other router. Leave only one cable connected to the ISP gateway to the wireless router, and use the wireless router ONLY to expand your wired network .
  10. TCP. Transmission Control Protocol UDP User Datagram protocol. UDP is an unreliable way of packets transmitting through a large network and is used for services like video streaming so that it can determine the quality of the video and a it's a way of playing multiplayer. A dropped packet is also why people tend to lag in multiplayer. TCP is best to be used for websites, file transferring, mail services, and torrenting. Netflix uses TCP to transmit http onto your browser. UDP is used when you're watching netflix.
  11. Boot the computer with one stick of ram at a time. It maybe a faulty ram that cause the computer not booting up properly.
  12. If other problems above this post is irrelevant, maybe the installation disc is corrupted?
