  1. I dug into it a little with a VM...
  2. Molex is actually the name of a business. A lot of people refer to a "Molex connector" in computing as the pin and socket connection used on older peripheral 5.25" form factor computer hardware.
  3. Mechanical keyboards unlike membrane domes don't require you to push the key all the way down to register. The different switches have different features. Some are smooth, some click, some have tactile feedback you can feel, some don't. Some models are similar but may have different spring tension causing some switches to feel heavier or lighter to press. The different switches cater to different preferences. You can actually purchase a sample board with different switches to see what you like. Though the sample board can be a bit pricey for a one time use so if I were you, I would seek out local shops that may have one you can try out. Personally I like Cherry MX Brown because I like the tactile feedback and quiet operation. I tend to be a "thump" typer on membrane keyboards. Meaning when I type I press the key hard enough that it bottoms out hard and makes a sort of "thump" sound. I'm not a super fast typer or anything but with 60 WPM, that thump thumping can get annoying...with the small tactile feedback of the Cherry MX Brown switches I find I have less of a tendency to press each key all the way down unnecessarily.
  4. I assume that diplomacy has not worked? You could simply unplug the Ethernet cable randomly until he agrees not to disable WiFi. Do your grandparents know that your cousin is turning their WiFi off? If all else fails, you could reset the grandparents router back so WiFi is enabled and any other settings that were changed are undone then change the router's password. Explain to your grandparents that your cousin is intentionally changing settings in their router that causing things like WiFi to break. Assuming that this router has a default password it is a lot safer not to use the default anyway... Tell your grandparents not to share the password with anyone else. Then simply hand them a post-it note with the new password. Oh and while you're in their router anyway make sure the firmware is up to date... If your grandparents are like many, it'll be at box release firmware version.
  5. Here is a youtube step by step It is a lot easier than explaining it.
  6. I'll tell you what WIndows 10 has done for me. It pushes me more toward the idea of abandoning Windows and running Linux.
  7. You do know that Microsoft supports 7 until January 2020 right?
  8. There are global companies that still run Windows 7 and Office 2013. I guess they don't know what they're doing.
  9. So your way of arguing is whining when people don't agree with you and making assumptions they just lack knowledge? This is why I can't take you seriously. I never said not to keep your software up to date. I said Microsoft is still patching older products and upgrading to newer software packages is not going to guarantee your online safety.
  10. you mean if people took security seriously? You don't get mad when people debate security, you get mad when people don't have the same opinion you do. Effective security is in layers. Software patches are just one layer.
  11. No. You can freely express yourself but you just need to abide by the community guidelines.
  12. This is a very incorrect statement Actually the mods deleted your provoking posts as well as any responses to them.
  13. Making a passively cooled PC is possible but you can't cram in passively cooled components together and expect them to be able to dissipate their heat properly...Even passively cooled components require air exchange. So you would need to design it so the heat rising draws in fresh air through convection. That setup would have to be able to dissipate about 140 watts passively going by NVIDIA's and arc.intel's websites. In the end, you may have to choose between passively cooling and a small form factor case...unless you went with something like laptop components maybe
  14. If you look in the routers config for access point mode it would make it easier. What model routers do you have? Also make sure you're not using the WAN port to connect them together. You have to use LAN ports.
  15. internet speed testing sites are very subjective. They're good for testing your download and upload speeds to a particular server or testing what sort of difference you have connecting to VPN servers... But it won't tell you any sort of average you might see for everything else. So for the OP's issue I don't know their housing situation but if the power line adapters are to blame and they have a very large steam library to download it might be worth temporarily moving the PC next to the router or buying something like a 30 meter CAT-6 cable to run around the house and connect directly to the router. Then when downloads are done, move the PC back or pack up the cable for next time.
  16. Seems like the Ryzen 5 2600X would be a bit faster? At least if you go by PassMark. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-2600X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-1700/3235vs2970
  17. As long as there is a BIOS version available to support it. Like I said I don't think you got a bad deal but not really sure if you can flip it for big money or anything...unless you can find someone that doesn't know the difference between generations of Core i7 CPUs. The motherboard and CPU are consumer parts...old consumer parts at that. There could be difficulty selling a 10 year motherboard and CPU as "server" components for $100-$130 when you can go on eBay and find an entire enterprise grade server with dual Xeon CPUs and ECC memory for around the same price.
  18. As much as I like my socket B servers, I would suggest going with more modern hardware for those workloads.
  19. Lack of sleep can affect the immune system. The cough could be any number of issues which range from minor to severe. If your cough isn't going away or is getting worse I would highly suggest seeing a doctor.
  20. Or maybe he means Arctic Silver 5? I love MX-4 but I don't know if I would consider it a performance thermal compound. Arctic silver 5 has been around for a very long time. It is still an okay thermal compound to use but there seem to be better options out there.
  21. Here are screen grabs for you. The CPU listed is from Q4 2008. For me, I would never pay $150 or even $100 for a 10 year old used Dell desktop. $50 is more than fair
  22. This is what I went by https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-studio-xps-9000-formerly-xps-435/specs/ First generation Core i7 system with proprietary hardware isn't something I would pay a whole lot for personally.
