  1. So he didn't want the item back and partially refunded me more then enough to replace the capacitor and I accepted as part of me wanted to try it out. So new question, I think I found the right capacitors, they are Panasonic and look to be the same size and ratings, however I've also seen some smaller ones with the same ratings but made by Nichicon. Now I'm not sure about brands with capacitors and not sure if I should match the physical size or not. Is Panasonic good?
  2. So trying to be nice and contact the seller without getting eBay to intiate the return kinda failed as he thinks the capacitor hasn't leaked.. "This is a used item and is around 10 years old. It is normal to see some seepage of capacitors in electronics of this age, that has had prior use, but the capacitor you are referring to has not 'blown' and so does not need to be replaced. The board works and, bearing in mind the age and thus fairly limited specification will do what you need it to - assuming you're buying for yourself for a project you have in mind." Now now, I expected some resistance but to say the capacitor is fine is laughable and I've bought plenty old hardware pre-dating this board that hasn't had any bad capacitors, I don't think even trying for a partial refund to replace the capacitor is going to work with this guy. And I don't want to trust a board with a capacitor like this as I had in mind this board being on 24/7 for filesharing purposes. Looks like I'm going have to through the resolution centre and force a return if this is his attitude.
  3. I do not dare test the board as the capacitor is near the ATX 24pin. This is assuming the capacitor can be dangerous when powering on that is, to the board or my PSU. I may just try and return it, I'm not so good with a soldering iron and didn't really expect to do any repair work on something in working condition according to the seller.

  5. Need a second opinion on this motherboard I bought, it's a Intel Atom D525 board I got for cheap on eBay for a project which requires a low wattage cpu for some simple file sharing. Anyway, I haven't tested the board yet as when I was examining the board I saw this one capacitor with an odd colouring on top, none of the other capacitors although differen't size have this, so I want to see what you people think. Has this capacitor leaked? Also, turns out you can make this out in one of the listing photos so I may be not be able to return it.
  6. Thank you, I didn't really know, so now I see the 1600MHz would only be achieved with with either a 4200 or 4300 series Opteron which are supported by the board. Thanks again.

Hi, So yesterday I did a rebuild of my Unraid server as I got a good deal on a Supermicro H8DCL-i board which also came with two Opteron 4184's, I bought 32GB of Samsung M393B1K70DH0-YK0 Registered Memory rated at 1600MHz, but they are only running at 1333MHz in bios. I have 4 sticks of 8GB each, in two slots for each CPU as its a Dual cpu board, there's not much options in memory, its either Auto or Manual and manual has a range from 200MHz to 933MHz under Memroy clock speed. In Theory 800MHz should result in 1600MHz if I'm correct but even setting that option doesn't change the speed the ram is running at. I've followed the Memory matrix to a T in the motherboard manual, here's the link to my board. https://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron4000/SR56x0/H8DCL-i.cfm I'm new to server boards, so could this be an incompatibility as this particular ram isn't on the tested memory list? Anyone have experience with Supermicro boards? Also, could it be related to the CPU's? This board supports newer processors and the manual doesn't explain if theres a ram limitation on which generation of CPU. Thanks in advance!

Right, so I currently have an unraid server with a 2Tb Seagate Skyhawk as a parity drive, originally based on opinions on reddit and unraid forums that a surveillance drive made for 24/7 writes would work well. I recently bought a 4Tb Toshiba S300 which is their own surveillance drive to swap out with the Skyhawk to allow bigger drives into the array. However, I recently scored a new HPE 4Tb drive (rebranded Seagate Exos based on model number) for the same price as a Barracuda new, lucky indeed. Now my question as I don't know much about these drives, would the Exos be better suited for a parity drive then a surveillance drive? or would it make no real difference? Thanks!
  9. Some higher capacity drives from Toshiba are noisy by design, so hopefully whatever drive you have just so happens to be a noisy one.
  10. Hi all, I recently bought a new Toshiba x300 5TB drive which ended up being defective, will be returning it and such. I just wanted to know more about this specific error as googling didn't get me much info, just vague descriptions about the head positioning, anyway its not one I've seen before so was wondering if anyone knows more about it. I've attached some screenshots of the error in Hard Disk Sentinel. Thanks!

I've not used AOMEI personal before but if it works the same way Macrium Reflect free does it's cloning, it should be all good once you boot up. ie everything should be the same as before but on the new drive. (Macrium can also extend the partition so you take up the full size of the new drive)
  12. The Samsung Pro will be better for productivity (Its what the pro is made for) and games wont see any benefit over the other drive, so I'd use the SN750 for your games.

This one is cheaper, I have an old SX6000 256GB that's still working fine, sure its a little slower then the others you have listed but if lets say you want it for games, you wont notice the difference in the realworld.   14. Some people don't even format, I've got a laptop in the past that had windows with their user account which didn't have a password. Thankfully they didn't leave any photos and it just had what seemed to be a bunch of school work. I obviously didn't keep anything, just formatted the drive, but their seems to be people who don't take it seriously or simply don't care.
  15. I have a collection of old hard drives with either bad sectors or have other problems making them unusable. They are all recognised still so the boards on the drives work, I have seen in the past listings on ebay selling boards taken off hard drives and wonder if this is viable and useful to do, while recycling the rest of the components. Or should I just recycle the whole drives including the boards? Are the working boards even useful for someone with an otherwise working drive but there board is faulty, can they even be interchanged if they are the same model? I vaguely remember an old linus video that visisted a data recovery place that could possibly benefit from these fixing drives, but I might be mis remembering. In short, I'm clearing out clutter and wondering what to do with them that would be the most environmentally friendly approach. Especially as boards aren't the easiest to recycle.
