  1. Nah restarts didnt resolve, I gave up and put a vanilla install of windows 10 from a bootable usb (machine in question was a lenovo laptop) - works now on 1909 I still think MS need to fix their update assistant as its pants!
  2. True, however on some machines, they fail to automatically see and or download the update without errors. Im thinking that the update assistant causes this problem Im seeing because never seen the problem on machines as you said which receive the build via windows update
  3. Will give the command prompt tool a try Reason for the update assistant usage is convenience... start and wait ?
  4. Have noticed on a couple of machines in the office which have been upgraded to 1909 using the update assistant https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 Problem is, after the upgrade and several reboots, the start menu search either clicking the search icon or just typing after you click on start does not work! Windows files search works ok, its just the taskbar search tool and windows 10 start menu search which does not work. Google spits out lots of workarounds incudling windows refresh to no avail. The only fix is toll back to the pre 1909 build Anyone seen this? Found a fix?
  5. Hmm, gonna give these a try... the current bluetooth drivers for use with Apple mouse and keyboard do not work in Windows 10 via bootcamp on any Mac!
  6. Of course, it was more of a technical workaround I was looking to solve, as apposed to just installing windows 10
  7. Peeps, I have no problem installing windows 10 within boot camp using an official ISO from Microsoft, however want to use a pre-activated ISO image... problem is, Boot Camp pings up this error... Anyone know of a way to modify the ISO, checksum modification maybe, so the boot camp will allow it?
  8. Found this, which fits the bill for DVI / 4K / 60HZ https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=cable+matters+displayport+usb+c&qid=1572783626&sr=8-5 UK Store https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06ZY1ZJDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  9. Sounds as if it will do the job, but daaam its pricey
  10. Recently purchased a Samsung 4k monitor with DisplayPort input for use with Macbook Pro... then purchased a USB C to DisplayPort Cable (4K@60Hz) which works beautifully. However, if I want to charge the MBP at the same time, have to use another usb-c port which looks messy! The reason for this post, is am struggling to track down a HUB which, as the title, provides... USB C input / output USB C power input USB C Video output to 4k@60hz So in essence, would plug the hub into a single port on the MacBook, then plug in the MBP pro's charger into one of its USB-C inputs to provide charging and then plug in a USB C to DisplayPort cable, connecting the hub to the monitor, again to guarantee 4k at 60hz Make sense? Anyone have this setup? If not, provide any links to such a hub?
  11. As my other post, am currently in the middle of upgrading a large number of PC's from Windows 7 --> 10 and for a fairly large number of them am receiving the below... Microsoft presume that's its a driver issue... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10587/windows-10-get-help-with-upgrade-installation-errors and these boxes are fairly old dell optiplex and Lenovo thinkcentres which pop up with a warning about graphics cards not been compatible with win10 etc etc However a large chunk of these machines have already upgraded using the MS media creation tool without any issues. In all cases where this error has occurred have confirmed that windows updates have been completed, drivers and third party software all up to date and scan disk and defrag run Antivirus removed etc etc The only consistency I can observe with boxes which roll back after this error is that they have a fair chunk of different apps installed on them Whilst the clean route would be a format and re-install, its a ball-ache to do that on 100+ machines Have attempted running the media creation tool directly, and a dvd and a usb drive to perform the update with the same error. Any tips and or suggestions as to what may be causing this.... online research reveals a lot of people seeing this and as many folks having the issue, there are as many possible workarounds!
  12. There isn't a way to roll back, unless as has already been stated you had a time machine backup. I personally dual and sometimes triple boot my Macbooks with High Sierra, Mojave & Catalina because of this
  13. yeah I was panicking for nothing - couldn't see the wood for the trees... all sorted now
  14. In a nutshell am looking for a solution / workaround to a windows 10 update assistant tool issue. After the MS tool updates a windows 7 pc to windows 10, windows defender by default is not set to allow RDP The problem with the above, is that am trying to remotely upgrade 100+ and can RDP into them to kick off the update. However once the machine is then upgraded, windows defender by default does not have RDP allowed and therefore have to physically attend the machine to manually allow RDP through Defender Tried turning off defender however still unable to RDP until the tick boxes are checked in defender to allow RDP connections Surely there has to be a workaround to this? IE a custom setting to have RDP allowed automatically after upgrade?
  15. Whilst the technicalities of the notch make for interesting reading / discussion and certainly fuel this thread, its not just that one sided. Granted its an "in-between techonolgy" but then there are dozens of devices which employ in-between technology... 5g been a good example of this Samsung are another good example of in-between technology and rushed out the beneath screen fingerprint sensor on some phone, however from all of the reviews I have read, its slower and less accurate than traditional sensors. I'd like to bring the focus back on the "hatred question" - ok so its not and ideal solution, but then I personally have found it a refreshing change from the sea of uniformly shaped rectangualr slabs.
  16. Its all about perspective. Like anything from choosing a car, to a life long wife / husband / partner to as this discussion... a phone with a notch. You weigh up the pros and cons of features v aesthetic and decide what you can live / put up with and what you can't. I came from a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus with curved screen and no notch which in the last week was replaced with an Iphone 11 Pro Max and initially found the notch quiet distracting However I quickly got used to it / realised that the benefits of lightening fast face-id for example, fit very well into my usage scenarios. I dropped my s8 because I was reaching round to the rear fingerprint reader to login to online banking and boom, dropped it! Sure I had to make some adjustments with the iPhone, like make more use of dark mode and darker wallpapers which for the most lessen the impact of the notch.
  17. There are always gonna be problems which as you state are only resolved or potentially resolved by an OS re-install. Whilst I agree that its satisfying to track down the "smoking gun" in these kind of scenarios, one has to weigh up whether knowing what the issue is / was, outweighs the frustration you initially described! Also, I don't see any mention of troubleshooting attempts?! By that I mean looking into Network preferences / profiles Have you removed and re-added your macOS wifi profile? Perhaps set your Mac to use a fixed IP address, or add an external DNS such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8
  18. This isn't your usual Apple V Microsoft fan Boyz ... its hopefully a discussion about the merits of troubleshooting each... for and against. Recently changed career from a Group Security admin role to an admin / troubleshooting / support role. I digress, in the last couple of weeks, have observed "users" experiencing VPN problems... basically they were unable to connect to the corporate VPN To cut a long story short, and the main reason for this thread, was some very glaring observations. Let me set the stage... Users were unable to connect to the corp vpn, same problem in each case, the connection would simply time-out All but a handful of the users were rocking windows 10 machines (different make and model laptops though) During troubleshooting for each of the users, the "fix" was different for each of the windows users Some were just resolved with an active directory password reset Others needed the windows vpn settings removed and re-added Still others were resolved by following this (their win10 build was later than the others) x1 or 2 were resolved by adding ip address instead of DNS name For consistency all were tested on the same WIFI connection in the office For the macOS users, the fix for each was the same, remove and re-add the VPN entry So back to the reason for the discussion, its my personal option that macOS is by far the best operating system when it comes to consistency in troubleshooting! As per my windows examples, in the windows environment, like Android, is too fragmented across different versions of win10, different hardware etc. Don't get me wrong, although I use MacBooks as my daily drivers, have been a long time windows user and admire the oS. To summarise, my frustration with windows, is that what works as a fix for a generic problem such as connectivity for one, doesn't necessarily work for another. MacOS on the other hand... ?
  19. Preferably from within the host... vm's are running server 2012
  20. As the title, am looking for an application (not PowerShell) to export Hyper_V statistics.. For example am currently in an environment with x20 Hyper-v machines and need to quickly extract info such as memory available, number of processes, storage etc Is there any tools out there to do such a task without too much config?
  21. Good points so far! It also raises another question... why do MS even bother having a software firewall built into the OS anymore? Fair enough, back in the day when people used to connect with modems and what not, you would need some kind of protection against online punks... but nowadays, ALL mainstream routers have in-built firewalls, heck even public WIFI will have firewall protection.
  22. Windows Defender firewall doesn't follow logic!!!!! Configured a nice shiny new Dell lappy for a customer earlier today, ran all of the updates, joined it to the domain etc etc Network connectivity - CHECK Showing and enabled in active directory - CHECK Can browse network shares - CHECK IPCONFIG query - CHECK PING DNS name from another pc - FAIL PING IP address from another pc - FAIL RDP DNS / IP from another pc - FAIL Rebooted laptop several times - FAIL Disabled the windows defender firewall - FAIL What eventually worked was... Windows firewall > "Allow app or feature through windows firewall" > check the box "File and Printer" to enable The reason for the rant was to state why the frig was Ping / RDP / File Sharing blocked even with the flipping defender firewall was turned off!
