  1. Boinc user here. We all share similar issues hardware-wise so I don't mind being grouped in with the unwashed miners You found the right place to post.
  2. Yeah, a lot of people like the less esoteric Boinc projects like Folding@Home, but Seti@Home was the first big distributed computing project and is the model from which the others were born. Einstein@Home is another distributed project in the astronomy field and it is also quite interesting.
  3. I knew what I was getting into when I built a relatively powerful PC to run Seti@Home 24/7. And not just the power to run the machine, but also the power to run the air conditioner daily to clear the heat the system generates (winters are almost non existent in Australia). It would be different if it was a mining rig and I was trying to break even, but it isn't. It is just a hobby with all outlay and no return. I don't spend more than I can afford.
  4. For new stuff I have been using umart for over 15 years without any problem. I moved to a regional area recently and there has been no delivery dramas either. MSY came up on this forum recently for their second big fine from the ACCC (consumer affairs) for illegal warranty practices so I would avoid them for the time being. Not sure about second hand tech tho since I don't trust second hand tech.
  5. Impossible to answer without getting political I am afraid, and this is not the place for politics.
  6. His facebook and linked-in accounts were scrubbed quickly, but the chan autists got in first if anyone wants to go down the rabbit hole that far.
  7. Well, it is a bit awkward that the only things they know about the guy was that he was into atheism and human rights issues. It suits the interests of people in similar circles to find out as much alternative information as possible about him.
  8. Just updated Radeon graphics drivers to version 17.11.1 which were released today, and each of the MSI Vega 64 LC's are now spitting out a GPU work unit in around 3 minutes average rather than the previous 5 to 6 minutes. Anyone else notice a compute uptick upon driver update?
  9. From my observations it seems Boincstats updates daily and not all at once. Different data comes in at different times. Some days you get partial updates also which are caught up the next day.
  10. Gsync is Nvidia and monitor makers pay Nvidia for each monitor they produce that features it. Freesync is AMD and monitor makers are not charged to implement it, thus Freesync monitors tend to be cheaper. If you have Nvidia GPU -> go Gsync If you have AMD GPU -> go Freesync When comparing GPU prices, remember a monitor for Nvidia will cost extra if you want to use the Sync technology. (Note - this is simplified)
  11. Pretty much anything that isn't an AAA title. And the brand new AAA titles tend to only support 2 way SLI/Crossfire (mGPU).
  12. If your a gamer second and compute first, then SLI (or crossfire) is nice to have since you already have multiple GPU's anyway. Many games don't support SLI/Crossfire though so only one will be used in those instances. That means if a gamer (not compute enthusiast) gets 2 mid level GPUs rather than a single top end one, they will do themselves a disservice in many titles.
  13. Running 2x Vega 64 liquid cooled and they perform very well at compute (Seti@Home) and can also play games OK... but not great. Go the 1080Tis if gaming is more important than compute. As more games become made specifically for DX12/Vulcan things will improve, but by the time they improve enough to rock anyone socks then the next gen GPUs will likely be out. The 120mm radiator attached to each GPU with push-pull fan configuration (extra fan added after market) does a great job pulling the heat out of the cards and they never get above 65% deg celsius with 24/7 100% load. The room sure gets toasty though.
  14. I dealt with a similar case where I used to work: the dude had changed his grades in the CMS grade centre throughout the semester, without realising the instructor graded in excel. At the end of the semester the instructor uploaded his excel data directly to the student admin system and the CMS grade centre data wasn't used. When the student complained he didn't get his inflated grades the discrepancy was passed onto IT to look into... and everything was found. He wasn't some leet hacker, just a script kiddy with a keylogger like the dude in the article.
  15. Lecturers usually use offline files (like an excel doc) to record their marking, then afterwards upload them to the CMS/Student Admin system used. Hacking staff accounts to alter the mark recorded in the CMS/admin system is very risky because it doesn't change the original data, and it only takes one lecturer/tutor to spot the discrepancy and then your toast.
  16. There is usually zero tolerance in business of any sort of drama generated by interns (whether in the right or wrong), and getting fired from an internship is a very black mark. As in "how did you even manage to screw that up with such low expectations?" Get your head down, tail up and work hard to get through it as quickly as possible.
  17. I have an Antec 1300W Platinum to run 2x Vega 64 LC without issues. Although from using PSU capacity calculators (like the one available on the Coolermaster site) putting in a 3rd Vega 64 LC would be borderline. If I had gone with a 1500w PSU right off the bat that would have been a viable option. Some games use the Crossfire ("SLI") capacity, others just see a single card. Make sure the rendering software you use supports Crossfire (mGPU) before shelling out for more than one card.
  18. Got a delivery of an Enermax Liqtech TR4 360 Liquid Cooler today to replace the Corsair H115i Liquid CPU Cooler in my system. Dropped full load CPU temp by a further 8 degrees celsius.
  19. Each GPU work unit in Seti@H requires 0.229 CPU as well - if it can't get it smoothly it will bottleneck the GPU's. Ie, for me each GPU does a work unit in 5-6 min tops, but if I let the CPU be 100% maxed out then each GPU work unit then takes between 25 to 35 min. Likely to be completely different in Folding@H. I think Seti@H is the grand daddy of Boinc projects so it might be less sophisticated.
  20. You also need some CPU capacity to drive your GPU. So if you let a Boinc project saturate your CPU at 100% then your GPU is going to be starved and drastically under perform. Not sure about about Folding@H, but with Seti@H I set the "Use at most % of CPUs" setting to 75% percent to allow the GPUs some capacity to stretch their legs.
  21. I feel sorry for any poor bastard IT person who has to work at a school. Hope you guys get lots of holidays or something.

I think doing what they have always done before (at the same scale) is just as risky a proposition for them due to being dependent on an increasingly fickle Youtube. Inexplicable demonetizations, arbitrary changes and being at the mercy of an ever changing algorithm... I would want to diversify also if I was in their shoes.
  23. Not paying royalties because you consider someone to have a monopoly over their own IP sounds odd to my untrained ear. I thought the entire idea of patents was to give the developers a window of time to exclusively profit from their innovation. But I guess when you have enough money to fill a building with lawyers, you can just choose not to pay for what you use.
  24. Is the limited edition one liquid cooled?
