Possibly in need of an e-ink reader...suggestions?
Radium_Angel posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
I need to read a bunch of .pdfs at work, and on a computer screen it plays merry havok with my eyes so I was hoping an e-ink reader would be a better choice. Have they improved all that much since the original batch like the Sony PRS-505? -
Still waiting for "X299" chinese motherboards :D
Radium_Angel replied to TimedPing's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
As to the VRM situation, active cooling is a snap on them. This helps. I may be the outlier here, but I've had much success with Chinese salvage x99 boards. Built multiple systems with Xeons without issues. Maybe Im just lucky -
I have a GTX 1060 6GB version in my Xeon system. Plays Cyberpunk 2077 on high everything (sans raytracing of course) just fine.

Turn-based, isometric, anything like that? Everything I run across all seem to be FPS which don't interest me

Thoughts on Sleeper Laptops.
Radium_Angel replied to Miltor180's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
A sleeper laptop might be a trick to pull off, considering space constraints....but an old Compaq III Luggable? Now we're talkin! -
When you replace the thermal paste, and then later replace the cooler, does the paste show signs of making contact between the CPU and the cooler?

As always, finding drivers are a trick. Might help if you want this thread to expand, to post where you found the old drivers and/or OS patches (if you patched your OS, that is) I used to run a WInNT 4.0 for DX games prior to DX 6.

The BSoD crashdumps should be written to the C:\windows\minidump (IIRC) folder, upload them here, I'll look through them and see what's going on

So, I need a movie suggestion. I'd like to watch something science fictionish. Difficulty: Would like it to be set on a ship, or an alien planet Bonus difficulty: Alien monsters should be involved Double bonus difficulty: I've seen most alien monster films put out since the year 2000, both Hollywood and B-tier, so things like Alien, Predator, etc I've seen multiple times.

Well, sort of. I'm employed by the gov't, I rarely do any actual "work" Or to quote a line from a famous movie, "We plan ahead, that way we don't have to do anything right now."

Amen on that...houses are sentient, they can tell when your bank account is at its lowest..then start demanding stuff. Cars are the same way.

So lately (aka this 4 day weekend) I've been watching films about how people react under pressure in enclosed spaces/ or spaces they can't escape from. The Belko Experiment Circle (2015) The Cube Trilogy Exam Nothing (2003) Project Wolf Hunting Project Wolf Hunting is Korean and totally bonkers OTT. Falls apart pretty quickly, but it's entertaining. The Belko Experiment is pretty good though it doesn't really end as sort of peters out. Mayhem is bloody great fun, best of the lot. The Cube Trilogy...well, if you haven't seen those yet, 1 and 3 are the best but skip the recent Japanese remake of 1, it bring nothing to the table Circle showed promise but failed to deliver Ditto with Exam

For me, it's not about the money, it's about the benefits. I work for the gov't, so I have the best health care, mental, dental and vision care that money can buy.

Glad you tracked down the issue. FWIW, you don't have to install Linux, it'll run off the USB stick, but dual-booting is also an option. I'm fairly *nix savvy so if you hit upon an issue, PM, I'll see what I can do to help.

I built a Chinese salvage x99 mobo combo kit with a Xeon E5-2690 v4 for 300$ (USA money) so if you are willing to go used, there is plenty of headroom for a legit license for Windows 10

Unless you are willing to entertain used parts. Trust me, MS ain't gonna care, unless this PC is for a business.

My m.2 SSD won't show up in BIOS or windows.
Radium_Angel replied to JakeJoins's topic in Troubleshooting
Possibly. List full hardware specs. Are you certain the m.2 is properly mounted in the correct spot? -
How these tiny hard drives changed the world!
Radium_Angel replied to Emily Young's topic in LTT Releases
I still use several for some older dSLR cameras that can power them. They are great.- 11 replies

Some advice needed on second hand computer setup
Radium_Angel replied to Eatocee's topic in New Builds and Planning
From what I have seen/read/watched on YT, these Alienware system suffer pretty badly from terrible airflow and therefore, thermal throttling. You'll probably wish to investigate in improving cooling/airflow and especially the VRMs (if I remember right, they are basically uncooled). As to the GPU lasting 5 years, that really depends on your gaming tastes, that's going to be a trick to accurately predict. -
It's risky. Flashing anything with a new BIOS carries risk, search the board about people bricking their system trying to flash the BIOS. I've done it myself. Up to you.
