You might be running into the same bug I have with GSYNC + Windowed full-screen. FPS drops to 22/23 unless either GSYNC is disabled or the game is run at normal full-screen.

If Windows 10 works, Server 2016 works. At the level (kernel, drivers, PnP, etc.) that it matters, Windows 10 and Server 2016 are exactly the same.

As much fun as it sounds I wouldn't home-lab an actual work place. In other words, don't use Linux for a central server. Yes, it's cheap comparing to Windows but the de facto industry standard is Windows, yes it sucks, live with it. Going with full PC, Terminal Server, VDI or a hybrid environment really depends on the characteristics of your users and their work. Whatever you chose, always go with a central management of credentials and data storage (backup, backup, backup!).

Just a side note: on many motherboards not all SATA ports are available when you populate the M.2 slot.

Hello All, I've lost the plot a bit with Intel so I'm having some trouble picking the right board and CPU for a VMWare/NAS build. Due to compatibility restrictions, AMD is not really a valid choice so Intel it will be. With this going to be strictly for home use and I'm not looking to run more than 3-5 small VMs a 6 core HT i7 should suffice I reckon. What do you guys recommend? Keep in mind that the latest generation Intel CPUs has not made it to compatibility lift for VMWare 6.5 yet.

All soudcards do have some sort of amp but the quality differs a lot and the capability to fill decent headphones differs a lot too.

Whether you edit directly from the NAS or not, with 4k coming up your need for 10Gbs will grow. Personally I'd never edit straight of the NAS, but true, with 10Gbs you'll be hard pressed to get anything faster on local storage aside from a decent SSD.

Start with the basics, can you connect to any outside mail server from your Exchange server? For example 'telnet alt1.aspmx.l.google.com 25' - you should get a 220 welcome message.

Apparently the new Sound BlasterX AE-5 has a headphone amp build in. Dunno if it it's any good though, but it was more marketing wank per square meter than the previous model. Also, RGB.

You can disable the audio device completely in the device manager. On an nVidia GPU it's called 'NVIDIA High Definition Audio' - under Sound, video and game controllers. Of course it'll be back on after a GPU driver update or some larger Windows updates, but at least that doesn't happen daily.

After you set your speakers back as default, you might want to disable your monitor as sound output device under 'Playback devices'. This way Windows will never automatically switch yo your monitor again. I have two monitors and a TV hooked up to my PC, before I disabled them the output device of the moment always was a gamble.

A drive failure wouldn't even be that big of a problem I think. As long as either VMWare or unRAID reports it. Adding a new drive to the RAID volume wouldn't be an automated process though, far from it. Hell, now I think about it, knowing which drive has failed in the first place would be 'fun' to find out too.

Hello fellow geeks, I'm planning to build my own unRAID NAS, but running VMWare in my homelab already got me thinking. "What if the NAS also runs VMWare?" So that set off a whole string of ideas of which my last one has such a thin line between genius and stupid I just have to do it. The idea: Get an SSD and a bunch of large harddrives. Don't get a RAID controller Install VMWare on the SSD Install unRAID in a VM (on the SSD) Attach the harddrives to the unRAID VM (direct mapping, not an image) Create a RAID volume in unRAID like normal and enable CIFS, NFS, etc. shares. Attach the unRAID volume to VMWare via NFS so I can run more VMs with plenty of disk space. Optional bonus stupid idea: create a Windows VM and attach an iSCSI volume to it so I can use native Windows credentials for shares. And presto, a NAS and VMWare box all in one.

Today (September 20 2017) a Dutch court in The Hague has ruled European Patent 771 to be invalid in The Netherlands for 'lack of innovation' and thus Cooler Master not to be infringing. According to Dutch law Asetek is automatically liable for the 130.000 euro process costs. Cooler Master Europe is registered in The Netherlands (probably for tax reasons) hence the Dutch venue. Coincidentally but not related, the European Patent Office is in The Hague as well.

Why would you want to? 1 - you'll lose TRIM support when your put an SSD in RAID 2 - you double the chance of losing your data with RAID0 3 - the performance gain is hardly noticeable
