  1. Just going to toss out that Brendon Small released a new album last month that is fun and fairly good IMO...
  2. Based on some of the stories I've read on this, it sounds like there is a group of individuals that are using stolen iCloud Credentials to login and use the Find my iPhone feature to lock devices with a new passcode and then demand a crypto-currency ransom. http://bgr.com/2017/09/21/macbook-icloud-ransom-hack/ https://www.macrumors.com/2017/09/20/hackers-find-my-iphone-remote-mac-lock/
  3. I have to admit that it is kind of impressive for Intel to deliver this level of performance across 18-cores... If I could afford it and electricity costs weren't as high as they are where I'm at, I would seriously consider setting my home temps to about 10 C as I head into winter and just try to heat the house by letting this beast run OC-ed... Sorry, can't come to the door right now, have to find ways to stress my CPU to heat the house.
  4. This makes an interesting story as the situation updates on whether the Coin Hive script is malware or whether it is just the implementation of it has been poorly handled. My personal feeling is that the implementation and roll-out of it has been poorly handled and that has created a bad situation for it to recover from. I am glad that Coin Hive is apparently taking steps to try and prevent the undisclosed implementation in the future...
  5. Have the K70 Lux with Browns at home, but purposefully picked up a Strafe with Cherry Blues at work because I have at least one co-worker who is extremely useless and figured the Blues would at least guilt them into doing some kind of work...
  6. It could be tinfoil hat but the fact that Showtime/CBS hasn't officially responded as far as I can tell is not really good... Some of the tinfoil scenarios that I can think of is that they were seriously breached and are trying to account for any information that was stolen in addition to having the Coin Hive code inserted or they purposefully were trying to mine from people and set it up in a way to potentially play the victim or maybe they had a rogue web developer who was getting shorted on pay and figured they would just earn a bit of extra income on the side. Either way, they really do need to at least issue a statement of some sort...
  7. I'll update the news article in a moment, but found an article on The Register where they were able to contact the Web Analytics business associated with the Showtime sites as well as some information from Coin Hive which makes it sound as if Showtime may have been breached and had this script injected temporarily. Although Showtime still has not provided comment so it's not truly known yet where the code was injected from... https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/25/showtime_hit_with_coinmining_script/
  8. I use the numpad at work, however it's not as needed on the gaming PC... That being said, they appear to have a full size board setup starting at the same price.
  9. So this is definitely a winner for most awesome gaming keyboard name... The 'Glorious PC Gaming Race GMMK TKL RGB' mechanical keyboard is up for Pre-Order with a shipping date of October 23. What makes this keyboard different than the rest is that when they call it modular, they really do mean modular in that not only are the keycaps interchangable (as one would expect), but the key switches are also fully interchangeable. Currently the board supposedly supports Kailh, Cherry, Gateron and Zealio switches. As for pricing, the basic board, without switches or keycaps ships at $60.00 but you can get a full keycap set for $20.00 and a pack of Gateron switches for $30 to $35 or order your own switches of preference. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/glorious-pc-gmmk-tkl-rgb-modular-mechanical-keyboard,35535.html Seems like a really neat concept, especially with being able to use different switch type and brands on the same keyboard. Could see some scenarios where someone may want to use Cherry Speeds for their gaming keys and maybe Browns or something else for the rest of the board, although that may also be a little disconcerting for some typists if on certain keys they are not getting the same feedback as the rest of the board... 10. I agree that it would probably be better/easier, however I would want the sites to at least inform the visitor that their CPU is being used for mining and maybe have a slider to set the % CPU to be dedicated while on the site with a minimum value that is maybe at 5 to 10%.
  11. I guess one of the questions between the 8700k and 7800x will come down to the number of PCIe Lanes to the CPU and whether you want Quad Channel memory...
  12. In news that might be slightly related to the recent Pirate Bay mining script, Showtime was briefly running the Coinhive on two of their websites. It's not known whether this was a malicious hack of the site or if Showtime was looking at replacing Ad Revenue with Crypto Mining however the script has since been removed from the site. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/showtime-websites-used-to-mine-monero-unclear-if-hack-or-an-experiment/ So websites may be trying to move away from Ad Revenue into just using your CPU resources to raise revenue. I think the main thing on this is that it is being done in the background instead of letting the user know that their CPU resources are being allocated for other tasks. If they honestly are moving away from Ad based revenue and request permission for a certain amount of your CPU while you are on the site, that may be more workable than trying to do this in the background. Especially considering that while you are visiting one of these sites you may also be running a CPU intense task in the background. EDIT: So in an article on The Register where they were able to contact the Web Analytics business associated with the Showtime sites as well as some information from Coin Hive which makes it sound as if Showtime may have been breached and had this script injected temporarily. Although Showtime still has not provided comment so it's not truly known yet where the code was injected from... https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/25/showtime_hit_with_coinmining_script/
  13. I find it funny in that the company I work for just performed a massive migration of everything to O365 and got rid of Go-To Meeting for S4B... Maybe I should see how long it takes for them to now migrate the S4B to Teams.
  14. The Selective Availability restrictions of GPS for civilian GPS was lifted on May of 2000. With the number of non-US constellations that civilian GPS has access to now, it probably wouldn't matter what the US government did as you would still get service from a different constellation like Russia's GLONASS or the EU Galileo constellation. http://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/performance/accuracy/
  15. Has anyone tried or considered clear acrylic nail polish to fill in scratches like these?
  16. According to the Spectrum Article, the new chip will supposedly be 50% more power efficient over current chips. Basically they are moving to a 28nm manufacturing process, using a big.Little design for the sensor hub (Cortex M-0 for continuous tasks & M-4 for more power demand tasks) and a new radio architecture that they aren't talking about.
  17. I would have honestly liked for more of a discussion on the total fin density and area on all of the coolers in the video as that is probably the biggest factor (IMO) on how effective these coolers are overall...
  18. In news coming out of the ION GNSS+ conference in Portland, OR today, Broadcom has announced that they will be launching their new BCM 47755 GPS chip and it should be in some smartphones in 2018. What makes this interesting (at least to me) is that this new chip uses both the L1 and L5 signal from GNSS satellites to refine it's accuracy from the current 5-meter accuracy down to 30-cm accuracy. While still not good enough to measure the motion of tectonic plates, this level of accuracy should improve your road navigation abilities quite drastically as your phone will be able to tell more accurately whether you are on a main road or an access road. In addition to all of this, they are also proposing a 50% power savings from these chips over the previous receivers, which should definitely help to improve battery life. https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/design/superaccurate-gps-chips-coming-to-smartphones-in-2018 I'm personally looking forward to this as it should help to develop some better mapping applications that can be phone based as opposed to having a separate high accuracy receiver. 19. Reading this, I'm reminded of a Phoronix Article from a couple of days ago where they tested some dual socket Xeon Gold Servers and Single Socket AMD Epyc Server against some of Amazon's middle tier EC2 cloud instances. Actually showed some really interesting results where all the solutions were trading blows based on different tasks... Of course the highest Amazon Service tested was only the r4. 16xlarge which consists of 64 vCPUs & 488 GB of RAM for 4.256/hour so it would be interesting to see how this all stacks up to the x1e services. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd-epyc-ec2&num=1
  20. Just went through a quick LAS Dataset ArcGIS Exercise (small file size) in ArcMap 10.5 with HWMonitor cleared out to see where the most activity occurred. GPU utilization stayed at or below 20% however the CPU utilization ranged from 75 to 87% on the Cores.
  21. This is probably going to depend on which versioning of Arc you end up running this in as well as whether you end up on ArcGIS Pro or not, but in my experience, ArcMap 10.5 tends to stress the CPU a bit more than GPU. (Running a i7 3770 with AMD HD7500 at the office). When running ArcMap with a 9 GB GeoTiff Raster as the background, HWMonitor tends to report several cores getting above 70% usage (although not all) and GPU usage below 50% I think this will probably change with ArcGIS Pro as that has built in support for DirectX and OpenGL acceleration. Same GeoTiff on ArcGIS Pro will push the GPU usage above 50% an dI usually hit a GPU memory buffer limit...
  22. I would say that this sounds like a future Tech quickie for @LinusTech in the making but there probably is a lot of software and device variance.
  23. I've currently got two desktops at home, one for a 24/7 UnRaid/Plex NAS and one as my main gaming/GIS productivity rig. Would really like to get two more at home with one being a redundant storage box and the other being a small light HTPC. Also wouldn't mind having a decent and inexpensive laptop for gaming and productivity while traveling...
  24. Would say that I was surprised, but not really... Honestly, whenever I look at any of the crowd-sourcing sites, about half to two-thirds look kinda shady. Too many /s remarks that I want to make on this... Any idea on how much they actually raised before the campaign was suspended? If they were just going to be buying sets off of Alibaba, they were either expecting to hit 150% of their goal being raised or need to take some remedial math... Based on the Alibaba site linked, the min order quantity of sets is 3000 which would cost $375,000 at the $125 per set price. Or I could just have that ordering thing on the Alibaba off...
  25. Not sure if it removes the Wi-Fi/BT logos from the status bar, but according to Apples site, while the antennas are still active the auto-join will be turned off on Wi-Fi until: You turn Wi-Fi back on in the Control Center You connect to a Wi-Fi network in the settings menu You walk/drive to a new location (does not mention distance of that new location) It is 5 AM local time (????) You restart your device With Bluetooth the antenna will still be active however you won't connect to a device until: You turn on BT in the control Center You manually connect to a BT accessory in the Settings Menu it's 5 AM local time (Again?????) You restart your device https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208086 Of course, Apple says that for the best experience you should try to keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on...
