  1. These are great, but not all of these are available in Canada quite yet.
  2. Not looking for a gaming laptop at all. I need an ultraportable. That is why I'm going AMD so I can get the Vega 10 integrated graphics.
  3. I think I will look at the Thinkpad T495 and T495s when they come out relatively soon. They look like they will have the features I want even if it will cost a bit more. Only gotcha with those seem to be the soldered on RAM which I imagine is 2400mhz.
  4. Good display to me would be a basic 1080p IPS display. As long as it doesn't look like crap and isn't 1366x768 I'm probably going to be happy. (god I wish that resolution would die already) Upgrading RAM and storage may be something I do, except it didn't seem like that much of an extra cost with Lenovo to go from a 1TB HDD to a 512GB SSD. My budget was at the bottom of the post. I'm aiming around $1300 CAD, but I can go higher if the cost is worth it. I'd prefer the 3700U as I may do some gaming and the Vega 10 would be nicer for that. I'd like to get a high end CPU because its not something I can upgrade. With my last two laptops the CPU became the bottleneck before anything else. I'm not completely new to all of this, I just don't really know what is out there for AMD Ryzen based laptops.
  5. Just took a look at HPs website. They only seem to have a 13" Ryzen 5 3500U listed. No 3700U. So that's a bummer. I think I will just wait for Computex.
  6. The only thing stopping me from buying the ThinkPad right now is the lack of a backlit keyboard. For that reason I might wait and see if something is announced at Computex. I'll checkout the HP Envy x360 though
  7. Buying in Canada! The specs that I really want are a good 1080p screen (14" or 15.6"), SD card reader, USB-C charging would be great, backlight keyboard, Ryzen 7 3700U processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB NVMe SSD. So far the only two laptops I have seen that come close are the Lenovo Thinkpad E595 and Dell Inspiron 15 5585. The Dell has features I want for a lower price, but the build quality and Dell's shortcuts kinda scare me. The 5585 has conflicting information as to whether it has an IPS or WVA screen. It also only has a 10/100 ethernet jack for some reason. I also don't know how fast the SD card slot is. If its connected on a USB 2.0 bus then its going to be painfully slow to use with a 64GB or higher card. That just brings me to the build quality. I can't find any independent videos or reviews on it to see what the build quality is like. Is it some kind of full metal body or is it like my current Inspiron 5000 and its got a metal palm rest and lid but has plastic core? The Thinkpad E595 also looks great, but would cost a lot more for me to spec out to 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. I could go with a lower option and add an SSD aftermarket. Only other thing its missing is a backlight keyboard and a finger print reader would be a nice feature but not a dealbreaker. Inspiron 5585: $924 CAD Thinkpad E595: $1200 CAD I don't mind the extra cost of the Thinkpad if the build quality and feature set (minus keyboard) are worth it. Are there any other options out there from HP, Asus, Acer etc? My other thought was to wait for Computex to see if anything was announced there. I need to have something in hand about two weeks before LTX in July. Budget is probably $1300 CAD but I am willing to go higher if something is worth it.
  8. Like everyone has said, it is a shame it all had to come to this. I think their next steps should be to release a video of them both explaining the situation The Tek style. Qain and Pistol included. They need to work it out like adults and move on.
  9. I don't see any problems in the way that Linus runs his business. Sponsored videos are sponsored videos, they have to make money somehow otherwise it isn't feasible. As for the preference for certain brands like Nvidia and Intel, its probably not because Linus has a bias for them, its simply because they make the best products right now. I'm sure if AMD came out with a stellar new processor or GPU, Linus would praise it in a heartbeat. Why would he continue to recommend using 4 year old AMD APUs when that simply doesn't match up with his bottom line - to review and recommend the best hardware for the money - which just happens to be Nvidia and AMD right now. Very few products today are outright crap (usually this has to do with the price of the product). So all the reviewers can comment on are what are things they liked and disliked - pros and cons. If Linus reviews a product and rips it apart a bit, lets say a case for example, that just means that case might be difficult to use or has some other issues with it. It doesn't mean that it stops being a case, it just means that there are better ones on the market for the price. Maybe if I had to make a suggestion towards Linus it would be to include a rough price bracket that the product falls into. A $100 case will have a different feature set than a $150 case, however it seems like they are almost compared against other cased that have been reviewed. One thing that hasn't been mentioned that does kind of worry me about other channels that do reviews is lack of proper comparison. This really pertains to smartphones reviews more than anything. I have a OnePlus One. It really bothers me when reviewers compare it against phones that aren't even in it's price range. A $350-450 phone should not be compared to a $700 iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6. Of course those phones will beat the OnePlus 2 in every test simply because you pay more for it. I may be entirely wrong on these points, and if so, forgive me, but that is my view on this issue as of right now.
  10. Very nice write up. I upgraded to an S3 from an iPhone 4 in 2012, and it was worlds better (then replaced that with a OnePlus One in 2014). The only issue I see here is the time frame. Apple announces phones in September and Samsung announces phones in around March if memory serves me correct. Which means that yes, the S3 would have beaten an iPhone 4s if you had bought one in April when after the S3 came out, but before the iPhone 5. But if you waited until September when the iPhone 5 came out, then yes, it might have beaten the pants off an S3. Same also goes if you look a year earlier. The September the iPhone 4s came out, but still before the S3 announcement. An iPhone 4s would have probably beaten a Galaxy S2. So realistically it still depended on the time you bought these phones in the era of their release. But that's not the point of this post. I agree that in 2015 I would have taken an S3. The iPhone 4s screen would be just too small for me now plus some other factors. I also didn't realize that Cyanogenmod 12.1 was out for the Bell S3, I'll definitely be downloading that tomorrow.
  11. Hey everyone, quick question. Does Microsoft (or reputable 3rd party) release cumulative updates to Windows 8.1? It does get rather annoying to have to spend a day updating Windows after a fresh install, would be nice to download a single file, install, and done.

  13. Make sure you get a Z97 motherboard for overclocking. H97 won't overclock.
  14. Google fiber is making all of the other ISPs sad on purpose? I'm OK with this. Now if only I could get fiber in Canada. I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
  15. It would work as an extremely cheap NES, but the 10/100 Ethernet is a bit of a bottleneck in my opinion. Although for $35 there isn't much to complain about.
