What doesn't work about the 2012? Did it just turn off or what? Does it fan spin? Does it charge? etc

@DrMacintosh it constantly locked up, so i tried to disable filevault because i thought it might be messign with the ssd, but then it locked up entirely forcing me to turn it off by holding the power button. then, upon booting back up it asked for my password but it didn take it, so i tried the recovery key but it didn't take that either. so i was like damn it i'll reinstall then. but it doesn't boot into revocery either. it keeps locking up on the spinning globe until it freezes entirely.

i have an idea what might have killed it. when a friend and her BF were over at my house about a week ago he put something that could have been metal on top of it, but the back cover was off because o took out the ssd a few days before. it still turned on and chimed so i thought it was fine but yeah. i guess not.

i'm not gonna tell him either i think... because i'm not sure that was it and because i'm also stupid for leaving systems open for days...

The SSD could be dying. Makes sense given the context. You should create a bootable macOS USB and run First Aid to confirm that the drive is alive/dead. There are plenty of replacement drives that you can buy.

@DrMacintosh the SSD is fine. it works fine in another laptop. also for some reason i can boot linux on my 2012 MBP but not boot into macOS at all.

Then you would just reinstall macOS from that same bootable USB. If the SSD is fine it's the OS that is corrupt.

    umm i used internet recovery....

The recovery partition can be damaged. Making a USB takes like 10min.

@DrMacintosh internet recovery doesn't work like that. i can erase the drive and still use it.

Internet recovery boots from the recovery partition and attempts to reinstall macOS. If the recovery partition is damaged macOS could fail to download properly or install properly. You could write off the MacBook or you could spend 10min to try and fix it. Your call.

@DrMacintosh it might have been the SSD... even though it works in another system this Mac might just not like it. i put another ssd in it, booted to internet recovery and it worked first try. i'm installing macOS now...
