  1. It would seem I've hit a rather annoying roadblock, but one I suspected may happen but hoped wouldn't... My Ryzen 5 3600 thought rock is dead. Now to lay down some context as to why this was ever a concern. A while back a friend of a friend had bought an iBuypower pc a couple of years ago that one day stopped working, powered up, but no output and all the fans running full tilt except for the gpu, which seemed to be getting no power, instead of putting in for rma, he gave it to our mutual friend who wasn't very hardware savvy. Now he knew I had a good grip on hardware since I tended to jerry rig oem pc's back to life though I was no expert imo, I still agreed to take a look at it and determined that either the mb or the cpu ate dirt, but couldn't properly test that since neither of us had any extra am4 hardware to put stuff to the test with, he got a new mb, cpu and case and basically had me rebuild the pc from the top and left me the unused old parts as payment, I was fine with this and knew that there was a possibility it was all junk I just wanted to help out a buddy and didn't originally ask anything for my help anyway. "But Wolf.." I hear you say, "The op shows that it posted and worked on the old Asus motherboard." yes, that it did, once, one time, and never again, what's more, that board had a lot of issues, I'm not sure if it was the original owner or the si, but it wasn't in good physical shape, and I gave up on it after the lighting by the chipset and the fan on the chipset quit working. The cpu had been in three different motherboards, none of which ever posted, so I'm washing my hands of this cursed piece of silicon, even if it still does has life in it, it's proven to be more trouble than just buying a better cpu in the first place. Moral of the story? Time to get a 5600, maybe a 5600x.
  2. Sounds like something in windows may be corrupted, has it shown the advanced startup menu before trying to boot, or does basically go straight from post to bsod? Try hitting F8 before the pc tries booting into windows, that should open the advanced startup options before boot and ought to give options for startup repair or safe mode, though it's been years since I've had to do this, so my memory may not be 100%.

  6. I have discovered after doing more research (please forgive me, I'm a bit new to this) my mb is out of the box compatible with 2nd gen Ryzen 2xxx cpu's but needs an update to be 3xxx compatible, as I don't have one on hand and don't want to buy one, even if it's cheap just to do the update, I'm going to get a board with out of the box compatibility with my cpu. The MSI Mag B550 Tomahawk seems to show on the MSI support page that it indeed is able to use the 3600 out the box. I will hold onto my Gigabyte board just incase. This is entirely a case of "I was the idiot"
  7. That had been one of my thoughts initially but can I even do that on this board if it won't post with the other hardware though?
  8. As an updated, the ram does work in my HP, though defaults to 2133mhz (probably an HP thing.) Yep, no bones there.
  9. So I started putting stuff together today for my new pc after my ram finally showed up, I put it together and when I powered it up, the lights in the ram modules came to life as did the cpu and dbug led in an alternating pattern for about a second on constant loop Things I tried. only one module of the Corsair ram. Taking all four dimm's of BTO memory from my HP and installing those. Trying only one dimm of BTO ram. Reset cmos. Re-seat cpu and cooler. hardware in question. Ryzen 5 3600 32gb (4x8) Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz RGB Pro SL ddr4 // 32gb (4x8) BTO PC4 2400 8gb 2Rx8-CA4-44 Gigabyte B450 Aorus M (rev 1.1) unknown brand known working 600 watt psu no ssd no hdd BTO GT1030 2gb
  10. More out of curiosity and to get advice on a sleeper pc that never came to fruition, though I still have that old bland HP case....
  11. Banned for taking two weeks to ban.
  12. Thanks for the info on that, I've always left it open on my task bar so I can keep an eye on the weather, I was worried something was off about the admittedly and probably bootleg ram since this was a day one issue ever since I got this thing.
  13. I figured I'd seek some help with some weirdness that's been plaguing my HP Z240 since I got it last year, it's a very intermittent problem that I can't seem to force to happen. I've had instances where my pc will slow down, crash, and then reboot. Recently, it did this again, but instead of crashing and rebooting, explorer and video drivers crashed and recovered enough for me to get into task manager to discover all 32gb of ram is being consumed by the app "News and interests". Now this is a very rare issue for me and I can't seem to replicate it, but happens often enough I'm always worried when this thing will lose it's mind and eat dirt. The system has worked fine otherwise. OS: Windows 10 Professional 64bit system specs: HP Z240 oem motherboard and oem 400 watt psu - i5 6600 @ 3.30ghz - 32 gb BTO branded ddr4 - BTO branded m.2 ssd - Gigabyte GTX 1050 Gaming 2gb BIOS version: Don't know, I did update it around the time of purchase and there was seemingly no change.
  14. As I have to wait till probably Friday for the new ram for this to arrive, I've decided to wait on testing parts since I'd rather not have to open my HP I'm actively using to steal parts if I can help it. So I did some prep work and stuff to the case instead! I don't like the big iBuypower branding over the side of the psu housing, so I taped it over with black tape, was going to use my touch-up paint marker, but that would look more messy, with the tape, it'll be likely near invisible with the side glass on. also had a little Aorus badge and decided why not toss it on. Made sure I had set the standoffs from ATX to MATX for the new board, tossed in the io shield and looked over some of the wires to make sure nothing was frayed and that no pins came out of their connectors, rare, but it's happened to me once, so better safe than sorry. The fans aren't staying, one has a bad connector, guess where the pin contacts DON'T want to be, and the top fan doesn't seem to work, I put it there just to see if I could do top intakes, and I can! Before... And after... Not a lot, but it's something.
  15. It could potentially short if water's contacting multiple pins. If there's water under the socket you could either set it somewhere exposed to the sun to warm it, or maybe do what Robchill said and take a hair dryer to it, and evaporate any water that is present more quickly. Though be careful with heat obviously, don't want to melt the socket or dimm slots or anything, not sure how heat resistant the plastics on the board are.
  16. It's letting stuff sit in water that can potentially cause corrosion and/or rust to any metal bits, but since the water was only briefly on the pcb itself, which has a coating over the board and traces, should be just fine.
  17. Right? I think I could get away with putting a pair on the top grill of the chassis at least, would get much more fresh air in. I know some 120's would fit, but I think it would be neater and cleaner with a pair of 140mm fans.
  18. A few weeks ago I posited a thread looking to get some advice on a system to build up based around a Ryzen 5 3600 and an iBuypower case (The Element Reflect from what I found today actually.) As I've just gotten the new motherboard for this project in, I figure it's time to keep a build log, what better place? Now my greatest experience with pc's before now was cobbling old Dells together like some some kind of Frankenstein's cyborg. This will be my first pc built up from mostly new parts The case, cpu, and psu were payment for getting a computer working for a friend, the motherboard ate it unfortunately but that's the good thing about pcs, just get another one! The motherboard posted once, and I was at least able to confirm the cpu was working. (This cpu is dead and no longer a part of this build) The case seems solid, though I can't say the same for airflow, but I can deal with that. Which brings me around to today, I've got the parts I DO have together and plan on doing a test post of the system later today or tomorrow after I borrow two stick of ram from my current pc. Parts list on hand. CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X MB - MSI B550 Mag Tomahawk Boot ssd - Crucial P2 250gb NVMe M.2 ssd Case - iBuypower Element Reflect CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo GPU - (for video output testing only) BTO GT 1030 Mass Storage - 1tb WD Blue sata HDD (Main file starage) / 4tb Seagate Barracuda sata HDD (Game drive) / 4tb Seagate Barracuda 2.5" sata HDD (Backup storage / Migratory files) Newly Acquired parts Ram - Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro SL 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3200 (PC4-25600) C16 The missing parts. Ram - Going to try to find something of the rgb flavor, preferably a 4x8 kit. Boot Drive - Found a few good 250gb m.2 ssd's, I know I could get a 1-2tb one but that costa more and this is my point of sacrifice since I have 5tb of mechanical storage. GPU - This will be the last piece of the puzzle probably a near the end of the year kind of thing. I intend to use my 1050 as a more useful temporary card over the 1030 I have already. Chassis fans - Really just looking for decent brand with rgb. dead parts CPU - Ryzen 5 3600 RIP I intend to post progress whenever it's made, some of it may come slow, but it will come, finally, my own build, time to brew some hot bean juice...
  19. Yeah, that's not going to last if it still works even. I get it if it was busted and you just wanted to get a look inside, but if you're going to use it, the last thing you should do is open it.
  20. It's been a while since Mistral has graced the forums, here's few from the last year.
  21. Blue Shift was one of the expansions for classic Half Life and as the expansions were named based of some kind of fitting scientific term, such as Decay, or Opposing force. A definition of the term blueshift in relation to the sciences, found on google "The term "blueshift" refers to the shift in wavelengths of light toward the blue end of the spectrum as an object moves toward us in space. Astronomers use blueshift to understand motions of galaxies toward each other and toward our region of space." I'm guessing it was a good candidate for the expansion name since you play as a security guard, who's uniforms are blue.
  22. Doom 3 is overhated. Half Life: Blue Shift is underrated. The DualShock4 feels worse than the mighty trident of the N64.
  23. I'll admit I only properly clean my machines including consoles maybe once a year, and while the dust get's thick, I've never had anything fry or damage stuff from dust and dog hair build up. If It seems my machine gets hotter than it should, I'll clean it then. Do it every couple of months if you want to keep things looking pretty and keep in mind stuff mentioned in the earlier posts regarding your own environment and unique dust situations.
  24. Having seen a few 4k displays in action, I have to say, it doesn't make me want to move away from 1080p. Not much better for a much larger price imo.
