I have some 1u coolers laying around. If you send a return postage paid box I can send em to ya.

Need to disable kernel mode setting through the bootloader. Its a bug in the AMD and/or generic drivers setting up the wrong frame buffer format AFAIK. There are plenty of guides on google now that you know what to search for, I dont recall 100% of the steps off the top of my head.

Not only is performance 20% worse, it comes in the form of stuttering and hitching. So the overall experience is worse even if FPS is higher. Build a desktop for high res/detail gaming, use your laptop for taking with you so you can do things away from the house. A 1060 laptop can play pretty much any game with lower settings and is great if you want to blow off some steam on break/lunch at work or between classes at college.

Jagged Shadows,Pop in,Low LOD and jagged aa

Electricity is out of the question already. Someone shipped a PC to the other side of a city and had the same issue at both places. Also, not all audio equipment will have the buzzing sound in your example. It just depends on how much filtering is applied by the audio equipment's power supply.- 4,228 replies

Best MacBook for a College Student?

Unsure, though it could be down to support in the OS you are booting. -

You assume that because you have yet to eliminate ALL variables. It is very difficult to pin down software issues since Windows 8 came out... about 7 years ago. This applies to Windows 7 as well due to MS update policy changes at that time.- 4,228 replies

Did you even read the part about testing a bunch of hardware from different generations? Or did you just skip that?- 4,228 replies

Best MacBook for a College Student?
KarathKasun replied to SpencerC's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Yeah, either will be good for ~11 hours, just pick how much cash you want to burn and if you want a higher performance ceiling. I use an old 1.9ghz i3 (no turbo) with 16gb of ram for office work + light graphic design work daily and have zero performance problems unless I have 20+ web apps going at the same time. (gdocs X6, gmail x 2, ~10 research tabs, youtube/pandora. using FF for personal apps and Chrome for business apps at the same time) Granted, this is running under Debian and not Windows. -

Then you can only hope for 10-12 hours. MBA and MBP will have similar run-times. If you really tax the MBP it will perform better, but get much worse battery life. The higher you spec the MBP the worse its battery life will be as well. -

Its not about 32-bit vs 64-bit. There is a 64-bit XP too if you didnt know.- 4,228 replies

You either get performance or battery life, not both. You can get good battery life in PCs or MACs, but only on models specifically designed for battery life. MBA is only really good for ~10 hours unless you go below 50% screen brightness. Check here for some test results... https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/all-day-strong-longest-lasting-notebooks If battery life is top importance for you, the Lenovo T480 is the only game in town. 17 hours using reasonably real world productivity testing. -
You will be pumping out enough heat to cook your dinner at 1.4v on TR. Expect 1.3v on new threadripper with extreme cooling. If they do a 64 core TR-3 you would be looking at 600w+ for the CPU alone at that voltage.

Using Desktop PC as a remote GPU cluster for Laptop
KarathKasun replied to Badrock's topic in General Discussion
No, you do not need to be present to enable the link. There are options to enable TV as a "server" so that it auto accepts connections from specific users. I use this configuration for clients that have locally managed inboxes (100's of gigs of e-mails) so they can remote in to their primary PC and check mail. -

The best solution, IMHO, is to set up a private VPN and use VNC or Windows Remote Desktop. I dislike the security problems that come with TeamViewer and the like. Though, TeamViewer is a viable solution if you are willing to accept the security risk. -
I have seen a few in the wild, just gotta look around for them when back inventory is sent out to recycling. If you really dig around, and are persistent, you can get all kinds of qualification and evaluation parts too. If you know people in the qualification/eval departments of a company, you can get them for free many times, especially at the end of a dev/support cycle. Ive gotten a number of parts this way.

ES gear is not that hard to get your hands on guys. I have an ES Xeon E3-1280 chugging away in a general use desktop built for a family member, got it on e-bay for like $70. Has ES etched on the IHS and reports as an ES to software.

You already have a backup. Just dont format the HDD and install the OS on the SSD.
-
I would just start fresh TBH. Install Windows from scratch on the SSD, install APPs fresh on whatever drive you want them on, same for games. Thats just me though, Ive got starting fresh to fully set up OS down to a few hours at this point.

At the least, keep alog of what updates and DX version you have problems with. DXDiag can tell you this. I know that not many people have a hardware collection like I do, but testing old MB (say Core 2/Phenom era) + new GPU (RX 400/GTX 1000+) and old GPU (HD 6000/GTX 400) + new MB (Ryzen/7th gen Intel+) combinations could help narrow down the culprit.- 4,228 replies

I would use the SSD for things you use regularly, games you play often and APPs in general. Put the stuff you dont use much on the HDD, like finished video renders and games you only start up every other week.

Well there ARE cheap cables with DP connectors that are not rated to spec. ~$20 range is about what you should spend.
